I would like to see several tons of it collected and composted and then analyzed. If the heavy metal content is too high it can still be used for municipal landscape fertilizer. There are hundreds of tons of biomass there that could be converted to methane if nothing else.
I was just going to ask the same thing. What happens to it does it just re-grow which I’m sure it does. It would be cool if they had something that would also pick up the cuttings and maybe it could be used for animal feed cows horses goats etc.
From the comments below I think most are coming from Sea Doo Boys. They can't see the engineering that has gone into this. Very Strong and fast. That would be a big job and can be done with the right equipment.. I am thinking this is tailorable. Good job and thanks for sharing.
I agree with the comment below, the shredder will spread the lilly seeds faster and clog up the river more densely, did you guys think of that when this machine was engineered ?
After all the cutting is done, you really need to remove them from the water cause it's gonna worsen condition of the water. The water plant can be made a good natural fertilizer. They also can be used in waste water treatment, just putting them in several confined areas on the the water.
Seems they would benefit more with using a harvester, does the same work but with much less power and the cuttings can be dried and processed to remove the toxins they clean out of the water.
Shredding the water hyacinth is not the answer to clear because it is true that the more it spread thicker than what it is now, waste of energy and more air pollution going on by that machine.
It needs another large boat behind it scooping all the plants it cut out of the water and then transferring them onto dry land to be turned into good compost?
What happened to it after it’s all chopped up does it just sink to the bottom. It would be really cool if you had like a conveyor that would pick it up and get it out of the water
The two "ear-muff" ear protectors shown early on aren't being worn, a nice idea, but wouldn't the decomposing vegetation tend to use up all the oxygen in the water?
Most aquatic plants when cut just propagate new roots from the cut pieces . That will just spread it around easier . It would be alright to clear a path but not for getting rid of such plants .
Useless project, unless you use the shredded plant for Bio fuel, Animal and Poultry feed, or make paper. You could dry and use the stems for basket weaving and mat making.
So where is this at? I remember (1960s) when the St. Johns River south of Jacksonville, Fl, was covered from ban to bank with water hyacinth. Herbicide spraying by the state totally eradicated it.

This is the proven method for dealing with these plants. Someone said good fertilizer, yes you know something about these. Most of you have no idea. Read about water hyacinth. They brake these up so they can flow. Picking them out and grinding them they can be a wonderful fertilizer. Right now in many parts of Africa. boat-loads of passengers are trapped mid-lagoon by huge expanses of floating weeds. A self-propelled weed shredding machine like this could be used to cut a free path for such trapped river traffic to reach nearest landfall, potentially saving many lives per year.
When you shred these plants you are just making worst because they grow twice as thick , you should be taking them from the water and make fertilizer with it...
It builds up and gets stuck around bridges. That forms a damn that overflows the countryside or even push the bridge over. This breaks it up so it will flow under the bridges.
The most stupid way of processing water weed. But the best way to spread it everywhere and suffocate ponds and slow rivers. Or is it a new way to generate work for the years to come (shredding every year more and more wate weed)? What works on earth (grass or brush shredding) just doesn't work in water.
What is the point? Any gardener will tell you each little piece will become a new plant! Why is t this harvested and removed? It could be composted to become useful fertiliser, possibly used to make biogas or bio diesel, maybe even simply burned. Using all that fuel to just chop it up a bit seems pointless.
