  • Watch how the MMDA are removing water hyacinths from the Pasig River to ensure the Ferry Service can operate without disruption.
Aside from using cranes and backhoes to remove the water lilies, they have two new skimmer boats.
The two new boats were custom made to the specifications of 'Save the Sea Inc', as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts.
The boats were made in China, dismantled, shipped to the Philippines and then reassembled and loaned to the DENR. The DENR then passed them onto the MMDA, to enhance their existing water-hyacinth operations.
The MMDA operate a similar boat from another manufacturer, but it's in the Malacanang area. For security reasons, It's prohibited to take photos or videos in that area - strictly enforced by the Philippine Coast Guard

One thing worth mentioning is that the water lillies are doing some good too. They're grabbing onto phosphate and nitrate pollution and stopping it going out to sea, so the lillies can be used as compost fertiliser to recycle those essential nutrients (especially the phosphates, which are in short supply).

I have certainly seen huge quantities of the water lillies on this river which will remain a continuous problem. Hopefully they can separate the lillies from the other garbage in order to recycle it as future fertiliser. It would be great to have an efficient and reliable river ferry system for the Pasig River in the future. Thanks for posting.

Water hyacinths provide food and filtration and also provides nutrients to soil etc. But in large quantities it can hinder transportation and water flow. Since there's abundance, we can actually have a processing plant to create biodegradable paper based materials using the said plant, convert to fertilizer and food for agricultural, horticultural and industrial animal farming processes. Sana matugunan sa ganung paraan.

Water Hyacinth was cultivated in the Pasig River as a form of natural water filter to clean up the toxins dumped into the river from manufacturing plants located next to the river. The problem is that the plants are invasive. The plants grow and multiply at a fast rate.

Different types of dried hyacinths products are being exported here in Canada from China. Mostly basket type of different uses, like hampers, flower pot covers, table top runners placemats etc. Some one from Design Center Philippines (is this organization still alive?) should give an idea to the city and work with them. This would be a good source of income for Isko's constituents. All they need is manpower. Don't need to buy the hyacinths. PLEASE, SOMEONE CLOSE TO YORME, TELL HIM ABOUT THIS IDEA.

I live in the United state and very very happy that this river cleaning is going on. I was dreaming of raising fund to buy and donate a machine like what they have now. I never knew that they have this kind machine already. I have a restaurant business in Los Angeles and i know a lot of wealthy businessmen here. I think I can raise an amount of money to buy such kind of machine. Unfortunately I don’t where to buy and how much it’s cost.
