I am totally with you on this theory and have come to the same conclusion. Albeit in a different way.
I didn't analyze the video but simply relied on my gut feeling, which I had the first time I watched it and in the livestream on the 7th everything screamed Renegade Antagonist to me.
Let's see if we were right in the end.

Another kick ass video! I strongly agree about the music. This might as well be John Williams' Imperial March. If not the "big bad" this agent is almost certainly a Vader to their Palpatine, or a Saren to their Harbinger.

It would fit if the mission was to track down a rogue N7, just like ME1 had us track down a rogue Spectre. It would be a return to Mass Effect's roots.

my theory is this N7 is working as an agent for the shadowbroker and liara asked them to infiltrate an alliance facility to get something and this N7 is leaving after gaining the object they were assigned to get. I still in the camp it is the main character but we are working for liara remember last year mike gamble refer to us as agents.
The agents reference is definitely interesting. I need to look more into that (wasn't there for N7 day last year).
Yes, because the three musics together sound "bad guy" but they weren't bad guys musics in context. Eden Prime? Where we found Javik and the prothean artifact, but also the seat of the first human settlement. Heroic. Aralakh Company? Grunt. Heroic. Also... the rachni, an example of choices. Peebee's music? C'mon. Companion in MEA. Not a bad guy. But... also, the remnant researcher in MEA. The bad guy vs good guy music theory is way too simplistic and ignores the original tone/themes of the music used. The music isn't revealing antagonist/protagonist; it's revealing story beats. The attention has been entirely on the wrong thing. The N7 is a _distraction._
The N7 may be fake, but that doesn't mean she is the antagonist, not because of the examples presented.
Liara herself wears an upturned collar--or high collar--in all 3 of the trilogy games.
I wouldn't say a bad guy, but maybe a rogue agent. Or someone seeking the truth about shepherd.

Same! I thought this was the bad guy, but then I talked myself out of it. But, I thought the music did not sound like a good guy either. And I also thought this teaser is like the polar opposite of the trailer featuring Liara. I'm so hopeful now! I had given up my hope for Shepard's return.
Keep on believing! The trailer was a few years ago now, but the meaning they wanted to show us is still there. :)

This theory makes a lot of sense, I too think this person isn't the protagonist, but on the other hand I'm not 100% sure this is the antagonist either... It just seems a bit odd to me that they would reveal such important characters so early. Also, I'm not so sure Shepard will return and honestly I think it's time to move on. I'd be happy to play a brand new character, hell, I'd be amazed if we got to play as aliens too! I just want to know what Shepard's destiny was, I want closure. It'd be cool if BioWare decided to give us a different explanation about Shepard depending on what ending we chose for ME3.
Whether it be clone, descendant, or the OG.

I am officially referring to the next MC as 'The Shepherd' regardless of the identity of the character depicted in the N7 day art.
Though I still have the notion that they may Not be the MC.
Love your theories, they really make a lot of sense! You totally convinced me with your claim that this N7 is "fake", but actually I would love to play as that character. Imagine every mission an infiltration with a different appearance. In ME1 the council I believe says "We have more than Spectres" or something like that, referring to infiltration units (the Salarians on Virmire). So it wouldn't be far fetched to go for infiltrator now that the Spectre story is done. I don't think that implies locking us to a class. Classes could just be different (sneaky melee infiltrator, sniper infiltrator, biotic infiltrator,...) or if the Andromeda system makes a return, it wouldn't matter that much at all. If you can be an infiltrator as a Spectre, why shouldn't you be various things as an infiltrator? The music is a good argument for renegade or not on Liara's side. But that could only be where the character starts and you could choose your way from there maybe? Remember how that poster of this character looked like it had a paragon symbol in it, but in renegade colors? I think there's more to this than this just being the bad guy.
There's a ton of arguments for either side honestly, and I'm here for all of em! I'd love to play as a more renegade-style character, just not sure it'll appeal to the current ME base.
The coat being a Paragon symbol, at least to me, is simply another sign that the Paragon/Renegade system is coming back, and not related to the N7 themselves, but it could be anything.

So we've got 'existing' villain N7 character and Liara searching for the 'missing' Shepard - our good N7 😊
Probably a Cerberus operative working undercover for the Alliance. Would give Cerberus an edge in human military actions.
Clone Shepard is still alive, and we have to fight them again.
That was quite a fall from the Normandy only to be squished against a big hard building in one of the wards, but hell, Shepard was rebuilt from a crumbly mess, so you could be onto something!
i'm with you and kinda had that feeling from the start. dunno about main antagonist but why not? personally i was getting cerberus agent vibes.

This is blowing my mind and the music is a really good call out! I hope this is true. It would honestly be sick if it's more of a spy thriller uncovering some kind of conspiracy. Maybe even "Jacket Spy" is a rogue SYsAl operative and they join up with us. Like it would be way cooler if it was some kind of sneakier more insidious threat. Like the Leviathan is influencing the noew regime after the Reaper War. Spitballing. But my mind is racing after this video!

The first time I saw the trailer I felt uneasy and almost afraid, and I asked myself why and the only reason is that this character is the villain. Your analysis clarified my ideas, especially on the high collar of the coat (cool research I had never noticed that!!!) and on the comparison of the music of both trailers. Well what can I say, in my head now there’s only one thought: this new character is the bad guy, I feel it in my bones.
I mean, if we think about it, wouldn't be cool?
And last but not least, I'm also convinced that Shepard will return as the protagonist, I hope so with all my heart.

What if it's Ashley? We thought she died in the explosion, but if you remember we ran into that scientist that we let go and told the bomb was gonna go off, then we saw her again in part 3 and Shepard was surprised she lived. Maybe Ashley did too.

Hard to tell by the footage but the helmet definitely looks like it could be Asari, and who's the most awesome-est Asari we know, who also happens to be deep into intelligence gathering and secrecy? Liara the Shadowbroker. Could easily be a follow up to her earlier teaser, her breaking into the one place that might know what happened at the final standoff against the Reapers and what ultimately happened to Shepard(depending on the ending chosen to be canon).
The design of the coat and helmet reminds me of Destiny 2 warlock coats.
Now that you have planted the idea in my mind, I will be sad when this isn't actually Mrs.Verner.

Cerberus remnant, operation paperclipped into the Alliance but secretly retaining their allegiance. Most likely actual N7 on the antagonist's side.

Fully agree that this isn’t the player character…though I’m not totally sold on them being the main antagonist. I could def see them being set up as that but then they join the crew or something? Granted, that’s not really based on anything. I’m just spitballing.

I immediately felt like the coat was a nod to Adam Jensen with Mary DeMarle has narrative director. Appreciate this theory tho. I'm torn on whether or not it's the protagonist or the antagonist
It's a tough call, and I honestly wouldn't mind playing a bit more renegade-y main character, but one of the last nails in the coffin for me was the choice of music. Bad guy vibes off the charts.

@@paragonseven If you want to really make something out of nothing, like I did, there's a frame or 2, right when the character's midsection passes by the camera, where you can see a glint of something metallic, the pattern of the glint almost matches up with the striations on Edi's midsection (default skin). I felt like I cracked the case, immediately followed by "I'm losing my mind." Happens when you say "IRL" at 3:03.

Whenever I use it in videos though (my N7 cup with the straw) it's usually to represent something akin to an emergency happening, or just for the lols.

Doesn't seem plausible for the Mc to be Shepherd given the time frame for the new game and it's possible for the antagonist to be the N7 and still be N7 if the alliance is the main bad.

Could it be possible that we are the villain's in the new Mass Effect? Everything we have been seeing so far is showing that we are viewing things from outside the Alliance and the rest of the factions of the galaxy. I would love to have a Mass Effect story where we play the bad guys, but if the Paragon/Renegade systems comes back, it will still give us the opportunity to be the good guy.
I mean we played as Cerberus for a bit, so anything's possible! I assume we're seeing things from an outside perspective (besides for the 2020 teaser trailer) because seeing the good guys' perspective would reveal too much.

Is it possible that there may be an opportunity to play the good guy....or...…the bad guy? Two separate characters?? With linear mapping the same as we had with ME2 & 3, this is not such a crazy idea. Bioware said that they heard the fans and that they wanted to get back to the concept of 2 & 3 with linear mapping and mission progression.

Yeah I was thinking they may do a Last of Us 2 and have us play as both, I don't mind that providing its done well, TLOS2 was not done well cos you had to replay the last 3 days again, would have been better , just going from one character to another throughout the game.

Woohoo! I'm so glad someone else has this POV!! IF - big if - it's a 'friendly' or anti-hero, it'll be liara or Kasumi or Miranda (or sister?) or someone similar. Maybe Aria? Someone sneaky, probably fem, and a little bit sassy due to the choice of clothing.
I also think Shep will probably be the MC in the next game too. That is not the walk of a character - of any gender - that can't dance and is famously clumsy like Shep. That's the walk of a stalker/thief/assassin/spy.

As someone who has literally never played renegade, I wasn't sure if I was just oblivious but even in my initial analysis, I thought this felt like a bad guy/gay/non-binerary. Personally, the thing that got me was the way in which the character pulls the weapon out of their jacket, it just didn't feel right. You give someone a look and then draw a weapon like that? Not ready to defend but ready to kill.

Maybe the Systems Alliance, or much of it, has gone rogue by the next game and the Player character is an N7 belonging to a faction of the Alliance that didn't turn trying to bring down the renegade elements. Liara does mention human defiance after all.
I considered it, and there's 100% a case for it, but then why the bad guy musical vibe coupled with breaking into the Alliance?
They could have easily made it more a sneaky tune, but it came across as "oh crap something bad is happening here."

@@roguerifter9724 Oh snap, definitely a possibility. I ran with the assumption that we were with the Systems Alliance though since the decryption told us to check "official channels" at some point, and (in my convoluted theory), BioWare on Twitter was acting as the Systems Alliance.
Hopefully I can explain a bit more when I stream with Kala on Friday, but it *seemed* like we were supposed to be the good guys.
@@paragonseven Its also possible neither side is totally evil and neither side is totally good with both sides having some valid points in their conflict. I think a Mass Effect story where our character has to eventually choose a side without one being the blatantly good choice and the other being clearly the bad guys might be a lot of fun

This N7 could be a Cat 9 or they are rouge. Interesting. I was so wrapped up in other things I forgot this was a thing. I hope this isn't going to be Andromeda 2.0 and I hope the story is also going to be good. Given writing in most games I might wait and see reviews myself.
Yeah, when I first saw that N7 character, my immediate feeling was a disappointed _No._ They're very stylish and cool, a great character.... but that's not me. That's not feeling like Shepard... So I LOVE this theory and will be keeping it as headcanon until release. :)

I’m gonna say what a lot of other people are saying. Your theories are absolutely amazing! And most of them are sound theories. I can see this character being a bit also like what other people have said, an agent of Liara as the Shadow Broker who either goes rouge because from the DLC in Mass Effect two we know Shadow Broker agents can go rouge, Feron. Or can just be an infiltrator to try and stop Liara’s plan for bringing Shepard back. However, I don’t know why that person wouldn’t want to bring Shepard back unless… they’re mister Illusive man or someone who was indoctrinated by him. However, this character looks to be more feminine in appearance.
As a complete villain, if that’s who this character is, i’d love to see Shepard back to face off. Honestly I’m holding onto a hope that Shepard will be back. I think Shepard will make a return I don’t know in what capacity though. I’d like Shepard to be the main character and playable again, but I’m more leaning towards another playable character that ends up getting Shepard back.
All that being said, your videos are amazing and I love how much time and effort you put into making these videos for us Mass Effect fans! Keep up the amazing work!

I mean... What even IS a renegade? like I shot Wrex, Mordin, and Kaiden. but I save the colonists, the crew, and the council. I leave Tali to die in ME2, but I save the Quarian Fleet. I sabotage the Genophage but save the council again in mass effect 3.
There is a chance that this could be a fake n7, but i still that this is the player character. ❤

What if it's the Benefactor and they're trying to find a faster way into the Andromeda Galaxy because they decided to stay behind? Take the gun for instance, looks an awful lot like the pistol you get in the Citadel dlc which if you remember? Was clearly from groups that were Cat6 washouts, sooooo what if this was that mysterious benefactor from Andromeda which is why were seeing Garrus and Liara with the Angarans? And hacking the systems alliance was their way of finding a faster traversal to and from Andromeda so he or she can control things in both Galaxies? 🤔🤔
I personally believe that the N7 could definitely be the Benefactor (and covered it in the video directly after this one). I'm not sure about why they needed to hack the Systems Alliance, but after reading the Mass Effect books which cover a bit of the Benefactor and the Systems Alliance, I think something fishy is going on with both.
@@paragonseven ya I didn't realize that til I got to the end of the vidya lol I said that while you were talking about it and it popped in my head the ONLY character we've yet to not meet IS the benefactor, who somehow knew before shepard did that the reapers were coming yet wasn't Indoctrinated like Saren, now the character is a Rogue AI vidya I watched? I see where you're coming from on that, but I don't see it as a possibility, as the shape of the helmet looks like an Asari shaped head, like specifically designed for Asari only given the same exact indentions on their sides of the skull for their tentacles, but on that same comment, N7'S are humans only as it's an Alliance operation, soooo what if it's Liara's new Shadow Broker Armor? 🤔 she's neither good nor evil at this point, she's an alien of fortune so to speak, but as for Shepard coming back, if he wasn't? Then why wait so long to tell us if he isn't when Mr. Gamble himself said and I quote "we're making this one for the fans" and from what i've seen alot of people want to continue their story like Cody Rhodes lol WWE reference lol, but they wanna know how their choices effected the world after ME3, sooo why wait if Shep isn't the protagonist? Bc if you tease with the scene that Shep lived, then tease Liara and what looks like Garrus, those timelines of the packets given don't add up, because Garrus would be dead, Tali would be dead, unless they all went into cryosleep OR whenever Joker outran then effect of the mass effect relay? He hit flash speed and went so fast that he literally jumped through time and space to get away from it, which in turn if Edi was infact dead how the hell did we watch the Normandy take off? Because in ME2-3 EDI herself said she is the Normandy now, meaning it's life support, it's cyberware, all of it IS Edi, sooo if the blast hit the normandy and killed edi, how the hell did the ship take off if it can't run now at full power WITHOUT edi? And last but surely not least, how the hell did Shepard survive and where did he or she end up? There are way too many dang questions and not enough answers lol this is exactly why I think the next game since Gamble said it's for the fans? That Shepard will end his Story in this game, the final story we were all meant to have instead of Andromeda, truthfully Andromeda should be the 1 coming out soon, not this 1, and well if they plan on doing it for the fans? Shepard finishing their story IS the fans, because without us Shepard never woulda got the Legendary Status they have now, I myself? Would love a game with multiple characters who have their own storylines, like if you wanna continue Shep? You can, if you don't? You make your own out of whatever race currently exists, whether it's Asari, Quarian, Turian, Krogan, Angaran, Salarian, Drell, whatever, you can make and start your own storylines in the new choice and paragon or renegade driven world, so we can truly have a story of our own, that right there would fix this company's issue with How to deliver a game to tailor to everyone who wants a new mass effect game but also wants old and new characters and storylines, which from Witcher 3 telling storylines from multiple people's perspectives clearly isn't impossible, and is doable with our current state of technology, sooo let's just hope the people at Bioware truly are listening, because this game will either make you or break you, it's your choice how you do it, but do it wrong and they lose everything they built, sooo Bioware? I'm glad you guys are taking your time, because an unfinished game is just as much a flop as a game half of your fan base don't want, sooo do best of all the sides and make a game literally for EVERYONE, you do that? You'll literally cement yourselves as the best video game company out there, that is all, realize its alot but i've had a while to go over all the info we have currently and that's my opinion on it lol
Oh as for WHY they broke into the systems alliance? Alec Ryder was the Leading Pathfinder on the Andromeda Initiative under The Benefactor themselves working side by side with Ms Garson, and since Alec clearly didn't trust the benefactor it's a no brainer that Alec woulda hid specific information from the Benefactor, like the correct trajectories of the arks that were sent out so he or she can reenact the paths they took to find the Andromeda galaxy, or to and yes ima add it stargates so they can have faster movement between the 2 galaxies, or to maybe black holes/wormholes which we all know are paths to other parts of the solar system and or other galaxies, soooo it's not a far reach that the benefactor would be trying to find a way to use both galaxies, especially if they stayed and the perfect destroy ending was chosen 🤔 that's why I think they broke in
