I like this podcast, I would not have subscribed otherwise. However, I do get slightly irritated about the misconceptions surrounding Abu Dhabi 2021 and Michael Masi. Masi did know the rules, and that is why he did what he did, but not after having consulted with the team managers before the race, and during the race he had it confirmed again, sometime around the first pit stop. Basically all team leaders/principals had agreed that the race would not end under a safety car, but that it would end as a race, which as mentioned, was confirmed again during the race. And Masi did what he was allowed to do according to the rules and regulations, including the race director's discretion - which is also in the rules. Only after Abu Dhabi the rules were changed for the 'loophole' he used to make sure the race would not end under a safety car. Mercedes were the guys who made strategic mistakes, twice, by not changing the tyres on Hamilton's car when they had the opportunity, it is that simple. Masi was fired because Wolff lobbied like crazy, also to make himself look better and draw the attention away from the stupid strategic mistakes they made. Anyway, glad to have this out of my system.
I totally agree. There was a high likelihood that the race would have ended with a Safety Car procession if Massi had done any differently than he did.
tbf on Merc they were screwed either way, or do you really think Lewis would've been able to overtake Max even with new tires? Max is a better defender and overtaker plus he could take more risks as crash = he wins.
And to make things worse, it’s not the only time Wolfe lobbied for no other reason than to get things in his own favour. It’s absolutely disgraceful he’s allowed to get things his own way. When I read a part of the F1 rules at a time there was some controversy, I was astonished at how badly written they are! They bear the signs of year after year of amendments, they really should be re-written from scratch. And when doing that, attention should be paid to having a default paragraph in every rules section that covers all unforeseen cases and describes what to do, either some fair action or the possibility of a decision by the race director. E.g. in case of the penalty for replacing components, there should always have been a rule that says that under unforeseen circumstances the race director can decide not to apply a penalty. That could have been used in the case of Sainz who had to replace car components as a result of colliding with a drain cover, a mistake by the track builders not by him or his team. But the rules were not written to allow it.
What about this idea. The stewards get a video feed off the incident and the cars they are looking at are fully digital or digitally altered so they only see a black car and a white car. They don’t see teams, don’t see helmets or anything else. Just 2 cars or maybe more that had an incident and now you can decide. Give a penalty if you feel necessary and if it is not by the book. But you cannot see which car it is so you are never clouded with prejudice.
David, you need an upgrade so your video is as clear as Eddie’s video. I do you have a soft blur filter to hid the wrinkles? BTW I really enjoy your frank conversations that comes from actual racing & F1 experience.
I watched F1 from 1997 till 2017. Ever since, I at times only watch the highlights, as Alonso and Hamilton are still on the grid, who are 2 of of my favourite drivers of all time across all disciplines. I stopped watching simply because the cars turned into tractors, DRS, departure from the loud engines of the past in the name of 'efficiency', Monaco still being on the grid despite it being on of the worst tracks for decades, and FIA being one of the most bureaucratic and corrupt sport governing bodies I have ever come across. I have watched the episode thus far only for 3 minutes, and I'm quite sure I know what Eddie is going to say in detail, simply because he has been saying the same thing for over a decade now publicly and not much has changed. Instead, things seemingly have only regressed. Such a shame.

RB wants a team player, they don’t need someone not willing to give up position to Max. Liam comply possibly, and Bottas has been there before and doesn’t need it again.
I finally disagree with both EJ & DC. Dubai is a terrible end to the season. That track is extremely boring everytime, the only interesting finish was 2021 but not because the track is any good Interlagos is a proper circuit to finish on. Dramatic, room for overtakes and more down to the drivers than cars
The car should only meet a few requirements, all requirements for safety. Furthermore a budget cap and in terms of racing rules a maximum of 1 A4. Regardless of the weather just always drive. Then they should adjust the speed and the car. The public pays to see a race. And every race 4 pit stops so that drivers drive less calculated.
Carlos Sainz’ penalty was a stewards decision, not a race director action. I disagree with the decision and can point out the clause in the rules that should have been applied.
7:10 Eddie makes a good point about the race directors not seeming to know the rule book while Whiting did. I am wondering how much input the race directors these days had when it comes to WRITING the rule book. I am gonna take a guess that the reason why Whiting knew the rule book so well is because he wrote a great deal of it. I am gonna take a guess that everyone post-Whiting may have not had great input in writing the rule book.
Love you both, may I request an episode where you tell us about yourselves? Your past, present, future aspirations? Or a link to the episode if it's already happened?
Teams should be allowed as many chassis and engines per seasons as they wish without penalty. No DRS rubbish and one tyre choice only per race. Racing would be lot better, and show would improve no end. Current rules strangle the teams, performance and the people working in the sport.
Are you autistic by any chance? 😂 Absolutely agree! I've got an autistic friend who's an excellent MtG player, and in awe of his tactical skills. He'd be perfect for the job 😂
What they need is no overtaking rules, no fake DRS, no pit to car radio, gravel and grass on the exits of the corners etc...then we wouldn't need all these BS rules !!
It is ABSURD that Ferrari had to pay for the damage, PLUS recieve a penalty to boot! Thank God the racing is great, otherwise I wouldn't be bothered watching it! The management is farcical!!🤪
I've had my love of racing rekindled this year. I didnt watch F1, I watched the 2024 LeMans 24 hours and subsequently joined the bandwagon watching the WEC (World Endurance Championship). It was refreshing watching proper racing with so many manufactures and teams in the mix. Teams all run a mix of experinced drivers and rookies who all have required time to drive. Stewards keep a hand off approach and only act when its a clear offense or saftey is of concern. Heck in the 6 hours of Spa this year race got red flagged and the stewards extended the race by the duration of the red flag. F1 does not need to dream up a sphisticated plan with regluations and politics. the WEC offers a great template F1 can use.
Oh yeah you can even watch the races for free on RUclips two weeks after the race. Theres even a team of Women in LMGT3, the Iron Dames (yes they can race and theyre pretty good). Valentino Rossi races there too and hes bloody entertaining to watch. Yeah, I've really enjoyed the WEC this year.
Yes rules are important but if we have good adjudicators, we dont have to have then becoming lawyers ffs!! Drivers have a right of appeal, and as long as there is no corruption or partisan behaviours, 2adjudicators should be able to use their discretion.
Why don't race directors practice the job on high level I racing? And mature and refine their craft that way? Including having an open relationship with the drivers, for example, saying we will try the race with "X" new rule, or we will remove, or put less emphasis on "Y" rule. Then you can try out the rules on other categories even?
Abu Dhabi might be a great closer if you are on the A list. For the punters it’s absolute garbage. Brazil is the place it should be for the man on the street.
Why do I feel like Wittich was fired because Mercedes and Mclaren were unhappy with recent findings about there cars being illegal while Red Bull's was legal.

I call DC or EJordan to be Race Director! You would make a really good for the sake of F1
Love this. What a pair!
👏👏👏 love this podcast!!!!!!
12:57 that laugh hahaha
We need a Magic: The Gathering player on the race direction team. We know rules and regulations like no-one else 😂
You pulled your punches about the FiA Eddie, after calling out others for doing the same
It is ABSURD that Ferrari had to pay for the damage, PLUS recieve a penalty to boot!
Gotta love a grumpy old man who knows he's right!!!
Love the growling part though 😂🙈👌
Why don't race directors practice the job on high level I racing?
And mature and refine their craft that way? Including having an open relationship with the drivers, for example, saying we will try the race with "X" new rule, or we will remove, or put less emphasis on "Y" rule.
Then you can try out the rules on other categories even?
Love EJ
Abu Dhabi might be a great closer if you are on the A list. For the punters it’s absolute garbage. Brazil is the place it should be for the man on the street.
EJ has to become Race Director with Sebastian Vettel, Just immagine
Why do I feel like Wittich was fired because Mercedes and Mclaren were unhappy with recent findings about there cars being illegal while Red Bull's was legal.
Get the Massi in for an interview, crowd fund the inevitable FIA lawsuit
I hope soon Perez just announce his retirement and he wins the last race. But then Max needs to slow down.
"well anchors" I see what you did there David
I do like EJ I just wish he wouldn’t sit on the fence as much as he does.
Rarely agreeing with EJ, but Mercedes should have signed Sainz to replace Hamilton.
You both and Mark Webber should run the FIA,and yes as mentioned a nice guy call Seb Vettel would be good
Billy actual quote was “the desire to be a politician, should bar you for life from ever becoming one” 😊
F1 has become a Hollywood production. MotoGP as well.
