Well, there's no mistaking this one. It's an out and out tip o' the hat to the mighty overdrive pedal whose name shall not be uttered ever again. Or at least for a little bit. The only difference between the Tumnus and the unutterable is price (severe difference) and size (maybe even more severe). Apart from that, Brian will be the first to admit it wasn't his idea - although, thanks very much - and that's it, really. Great circuit, yours for a steal, takes up no room, NOT true bypass, and essential to any real stomp collection. And, most importantly, it's sonically indistinguishable from the old goldie. On your horse, then.

6:12 - Brett thinks he's playing a Les Paul. Great demo - I'm sold!
You do the best reviews of pedals out there. Spot on, focusing on things that matter and offer a good variety of tones. Most would simply slam the drive and solo for 10 minutes. Congrats.
Years later, this is still a relevant review. Great job, Brett!!
Got mine for my birthday! Excellent demo, showed a lot of different ways to use it. Thanks!
Going to grab one of these. Glad wampler has responded to what guitarists want. Smaller pedals!!!!!! More please wampler
Great pedal, yet again, from Wampler. And, nicely demonstrated as always by your good self (Mr Kingman). Will have to add this pedal to my board. Thanks again.
"It's death defyingly loud in here, [so] I'm going to turn this gain control up all the way." LOL!
Pedal is awesome but the amp sounds great even without it.
Same
Love your demos, thanks man.
Brett ROCKS! & Wampler is one of my favs. Great review! The pedal is for a very specific gain structure. Jangly into slight overdrive/compression. Not a huge effect on an already driven signal.
Some attention should be given, IMHO, to putting pedals like this in the effects loop. As a post gain/overall clean boost.
Gorgeous sounding pedal, it literally re-invigorated my playing when I got one. Funny nobody seems to have noticed you reaching for the Les Paul toggle switch on that SG! Had to grin at that, I've done the same myself many times.
Great demo, Burgs! Definitely going on my short list
Everyone loves Klons and klones for their clean boost, but IMO they sound equally awesome overdriven. So organic.
That buffer will be sweet alone, can't wait to get this and boost my RAH.
Great demo!
Wow.. Great sound. Have to get one of these😍😍😍
Bloody gorgeous!
How would you compare and contrast this to the Keeley Oxblood?
Brett will you be able to make a comparison between the Tumnus and Archer Ikon?
Wow sounds great!
How does this sound next to a Rockett archer? Any chance of getting an A/B video?
Oh nice SG!
I have one. Blends well with any high gain amp.
Man that sounds sweet.
This pedal is very loud! I'm really liking the 'extra poke' so far lol!
Hi Bret. Having watched many of your great videos. Can you advise on a good overdrive pedal for a 52 reissue fender telecaster played through a Fender Hot rod deluxe please.
You have me thinking of selling off all my pedals and just buying that Laney!
Sounds killer.
Nice demo as always except one thing. What kind of noise does this produce? Especially when the gain is dimed out.
JUST A THOUGHT COULD YOU STACK A PLEXI DRIVE WITH THE WHITE ONE) WITH A TUMNUS THE SMALLER ONE!!!
Lot of tone in such a little package.
And haha, you named dropped the pedal at the end there.
SOLD!
This thing sounds disgustingly good.
Nice !!
Wow, this thing kicks in exactly the same way I would expect it to! I really like JHS' Meat Mod version of the Soul Food, but the box is horribly gross (thanks EH), I could settle on the esthetics of this for the cost. This box kicks!
Holy shit, I came for the pedal (which I love) but I think I'm now looking for the Laney VH-100R 😍😍
Brother Bret.. Hello... I couldn't really make out what pickups you have on their? Are they noiseless? Are they Brierleys? That sound great... please lets us know ...
Kinman Fat 50's pickups
+lookmanostrings Thanks Bret.... you are the guy who originally turned me onto the Brierleys... thank you so much..
Where would you recommend putting this in your pedal chain?
Early on, but after fuzz pedals, if you use them.
Sounds amazing as your vids always do. Do you change your amp settings when you switch to the SG?
+sk8erps Nope. Too lazy. Same settings.
Sweet! Archer vs Tumnus comparison?
+Craig Martin I was told an Archer was on its way when they were first released almost two years ago. In fact I was asked if I would demo it by their main man. And then again. Nothing has surfaced. My faith in Rockett has been tarnished somewhat. Not so with Wampler. So I can't help, I'm sorry.
:-(
hmm? 2 thumbs up from Bergs!.. the Oxblood from Keeley is very attractive.. but this Tumnus from Wampler kinda does the same and much smaller and less expensive.
I have the Arc Klove V2
How would you compare the Tumnus to the ARC ?
Quiet switch?
I'm thinking we'll most likely wind up with a Shnobeltone A/B comparison between this and the Archer. I think this pedal sounds absolutely amazing. It doesn't just clog up your tone with brittle fuzziness like the Soul Food (which is actually not a bad pedal). It seems to have all the right sparkle and color. Mine is on the way.
Fabulous demo! You made me decide to get one! This with my Tube Screamer Mini will make a bullet-proof combo. Thanks!
vid starts at 4:00 for me,, that is the should these types of pedal should do. :)
whoah! didn't see this curve ball coming, it actually sounds fantastic, Brian's done it again hey?
+Brian Cullen Well this time it's not "not based on" a KLON. :)
+Laurent Toussaint I just didn't think Brian would jump on the Noon wagon, but now I've heard this I'm glad I did. Maybe its even better than the original?
+Brian Cullen bloody spell check "Noon" was supposed to be Klon obviously.
Does it have the same heterodyning (noise) problems as the Archer, with the Big strymon pedals???
+Erick Chicas heterodyning?
Carmelo Santini here: www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/rockett-archer-not-usable-with-strymon-mobius-and-timeline.1535801/
Thanks, those are all pedals I am looking at for building a tour board so I was curious
Carmelo Santini If you are very picky and use specific settings it might bother you, i am very picky so i couldn't handle it.
Hmmm yeah I'm very detail oriented, if there is noise it will bother me. I too would be really curious to find this out.... WHY NOT JUST USE AN 18V Plug? If I understood that right it's the part that changes 9v to 18v? Or is it the buffer
Huge props to Wampler for mentioning the fact that it's NOT true bypass. Every other klone builder take great care not to mention it, as if it was a disease...
you could always put in a little tb looped (its small enough)
+Laurent Toussaint not really scary to mention considering it is the most famous buffer that every one seems to clone
+Miguel Pessanha I find that my 4 true bypass fx change my amps response anyway (there must be a better way). Question: if you put say 5+ effects with true bypass in a loop that is a single true bypass do you get the sound reduction of a single t b loop or do you get t b loop + the 5+ effects reduction?
+Brian Cullen that will depend if the pedals will be activated or not.
If the 5 pedals are on it will be the same as if you had no looper, if they are all off it will be the same as guitar looper amp.
People buy buffers from companies like jhs for crazy amounts of prices but then mod their boss pedals or tube screamers to be true bypass, when the buffers are actually similiar, jfet buffers, do you see the irony?
My only concern is having for example 10 boss pedals in series, when each one usually has a o/p and an I/p buffer, that is 20 buffers.
My advice: have a buffer in the beginning and perhaps in the end.
Note this doesn't have to be a klon or a fancy buffer, could just be a boss tuner and a dd3 in the end. Experiment and see what sounds better
+Miguel Pessanha cheers, I cant stand the cold rigid soynd of the boss buffer, my radial pz pre has no bypass buffer and it sounds good but most the time I dont want anything but the amp. If I had Bretts Laney I would probably feel the same way.
Nice but the Keeley Oxblood does the same, actually nicer and more versatile.
Alex strats JHS Soul Food Meat & 3 is also very versatile... Killer mod on the original EHX Soul Food.. Tons of options..
Someone needs to do a Klon v Tumnus...I don't believe it's sounds the same...Yes, doubting Thomas...
Curtis Kent has a shootout
It's a thoroughbred alright...
Nice little edge-of-brutality....well, for a blues pedal, at least! ...Right?!
It can’t possibly do the same thing or sound just like the original pedal it’s cloned of cos it doesn’t have the magical diodes that were gooped, so how could anyone possibly know.
Haha what a load of bollocks so many believe the above and still keep writing on guitar forums, it’s just an overdrive but a very good one, nice sounding, but there ain’t no magical diodes.
The Tumnus is a fantastic pedal like all Wampler pedals that sounds pretty much exactly the same as a Klon, so get one of these for a cracking price instead spending 3-5K on a real Klon cos you think they’re magical.
Tumnus or the soul food?
I like the tumnus, but the klon is better. Sounds more like an overdriven amp and not a good pedal.
Even has a centaur huh - wow thats chibson like.
too much sound here! lol
