    I started using the Ordinary 7% glycolic acid toner over a week ago. In just this short time I have noticed a nice change in my overall skin. I leave the product on then follow with a retinol moisturizer. Once a week I use an exfoliating scrub then tone with the glycolic toner but on a wet cotton round.

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Год назад +2

      Are you using a wet cotton round with the toner? This can dilute the glycolic toner and raise the pH, making it less effective (or even ineffective since glycolic acid needs a specific pH range to work effectively). Can you tell me why you're doing that?

    This by far is the best demonstration regarding the use of different acids. I recently started using the Ordinary Glycolic 7% acid at night only.. and I've also purchased the Ordinary Buffet. You made a video about not applying the acids with Peptides, Vitamin C etc. Last night.. was my first time with the Glycolic 7% waited about ten minutes, which I think was a waste of Inkey Hyaluronic acid since it works better on damp skin.. I guess I did it as a protectant, then I applied the Buffet.. Skin felt soft, added some Okay regenerist and I was fine.. Can I use my acid wait 20 minutes, mist my face with water, apply my Hyaluronic acid and then apply my Buffet? I use my Buffet in the morning and would like to use it at night, without interfering with my acid.. My reason for the 20, is to allow the Glycolic acid to fully penetrate. The water mist is for the Hyaluronic acid to help the Buffet penetrate as well. HELP!
    My Cleaners are:
    CeraVe Hydrating facial Cleanser
    CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser
    I have dull, a bit uneven, a bit of sagging, marionette lines. I was using Dr. Brenner Vitamin C E Ferulic, Adapalene for almost 2 years. My skin is better, but I wanted to step it up with the Glycolic acid and Buffet. My skin isn't oily nor sensitive, its normal.
    Any Suggestions Melissa Van Dijk would be appreciated, thank you.

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  2 года назад +1

      Hello Elizabeth,
      It will not make a difference, Hyaluronic Acid is stabilised, and therefore it cannot draw the water from the skin or environment. So you will not have any benefits for the skin while doing this, it only feels different, but the efficacy stays the same. The formulations are all water-based, and the serums have what they need for optimal skin penetration ;).
      Technically, the skin needs much longer to get back to its normal pH (I think 30 minutes to 1 hour), so you theoretically need to wait that long in between. Or you just can rebalance it with a toner or the hyaluronic acid, which you use right after the Glycolic Acid and add Buffet after that. So maybe just give it a minute or so, but that should already be enough.
      Also, Glycolic Acid can be very harsh on the skin. Whenever I use it too often, it makes my skin worse (I also use Adapalene and other retinoids and retinol because I test so many products to show applications/demonstrations). So that may also be the issue. Still, I recommend not to overdo it. Or if it is too harsh on your skin, and if it does not get any better, use a PHA toner or Mandelic Acid Toner or serum. That works best for me.
      I hope that this helps ;)

    I doubt a faster skin renewal will prevent blackheads 😏
    Blackheads are not "pores that are clogged", it's the result of squeezed sebaceous canals due mostly to water retention in the deeper layers of skin.
    Same for "sebaceous filaments" if you're asking, because, they're basically the same exact thing

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  6 месяцев назад

      It seems there's a bit of a mix in the understanding here. Let's clarify the concepts around blackheads, sebaceous filaments, and skin renewal.
      Blackheads are a type of clogged pore. They form when a hair follicle becomes plugged with sebum (the oil produced by the skin) and dead skin cells. The top of the plug may darken when it's exposed to the air due to oxidation, which gives blackheads their characteristic black appearance. This is not directly related to water retention in deeper skin layers.
      Sebaceous filaments are often confused with blackheads but are actually quite different. They are tiny, hair-like formations found in the lining of the pores that help to channel the flow of sebum along the lining of the pore. While they can appear similar to blackheads due to their visibility at the skin's surface, sebaceous filaments are a normal part of the skin's anatomy and are not considered a form of acne or a clogged pore in the traditional sense.
      The concept of water retention in deeper layers of the skin contributing to blackheads or sebaceous filaments isn't supported by common dermatological understanding. Water retention can affect the skin's appearance and texture, but blackheads and sebaceous filaments are more directly related to sebum production, dead skin cell accumulation, and pore blockage.
      Skin renewal, or the process of skin cell turnover, can indeed influence the appearance of both blackheads and sebaceous filaments. Faster skin renewal can help in preventing the accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin's surface, potentially reducing the likelihood of pores becoming clogged. However, it's not a guaranteed prevention method for blackheads since other factors like excessive sebum production and hormonal influences also play significant roles.

    • @mariec7092
      @mariec7092 6 месяцев назад +1

      Nah. Putting an acid may soften the "plug", reducing its diameter, allowing more sebum to flow freely out of the canal, reducing the swollenness of the face. But hairs, OR sebum, don't cause any problems if the skin has the right structure and water balance in all layers. I can tell they don't explain these things in derm school, like there are many things they don't explain to dr.s, but that is what it is. Diet and emotions, as well as gut health, is what makes your skin congested and makes the sebum struggle and collect stuff on its painful way out. The word "pore" shouldn't even exist in a derm's explanation of anything.
      The pore is just the surface the sebum has to make it through to. Everything that goes wrong happens waaaay below that 😏

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  6 месяцев назад

      @@mariec7092 Yes, I agree, and it's true that traditional dermatology may not always delve into holistic aspects as much as some would like. However, it does provide a foundation based on extensive research and clinical evidence. For instance, the role of sebum and dead skin cells in forming blackheads is well-documented. But, I agree, this is just one part of a much larger picture.
      But overall I also think that we should look beyond the surface to the underlying health of the skin and the body as a whole. This aligns with what I have experienced over the years. There is definitely a huge connection between skin health, diet, and the gut microbiome.

      I recommend not using The Ordinary Glycolic Acid with the AHA + BHA serum since Glycolic Acid = AHA. So you should avoid using them in the same routine. If you want to use both, it's best to alternate daily or weekly, depending on your preference.
      You can use Glycolic Acid or AHA + BHA Serum first and layer Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide on top. And you have to find the right frequency for you. The products can be used daily.

      Maybe like this:
      AM routine
      Neutrogena hydro boost cleanser
      The ordinary Caffeine solution
      the ordinary 15% ethylated ascorbic acid
      Cerave AM moisturiser with SPF

    Hej melissa! ❤️ Im currently using lactic acid 10 percent in my evening routine. My fine lines diminished when i started using lactic acid and you can see the glow in my face. My pores were minimized too. But i read some of the bloggs that glycolic acid has smaller molecules that can go deeper into your skin. In your experience, what do you prefer? Lactic or glycolic?
    Thank you! ❤️

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 года назад +2

      Hello again :)
      Yes, Glycolic Acid has the smallest molecules, and therefore it often leads to stinging or burning on the skin. But it also depends on the formulation; if it is very watery, it tends to be much stronger. I prefer Lactic Acid. And when I use Glycolic Acid, I often use Paula's Choice 8% AHA since that one has a sticky texture, and I tolerate it better. I do not often use the Glycolic Acid from The Ordinary anymore. Generally, you need to test it and see what you like most :)

      @@MelissaVanDijkOfficial okay! Noted. As i also read, lactic acid is more beneficial than glycolic. Its just, it has bigger molecules that it doesnt go deeper into the skin thats why it takes time to see the effect.. just in case i switch into glycolic acid, will it be the same routine as i do with lactic? Cleanser, glycolic, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and moisturizing cream?

      Some people use Glycolic Acid for their underarms, but I am concerned about the long-term effects because these areas are very sensitive. Maybe if you only use it a few times a week and do not overdo it. For the neck, there shouldn't be an issue.

    Hi, Melissa... I want to know something... Will the orrdinary glycolic acid toner be better than ordinary alpha arbutin to fade acne scars?? Coz I have super oily skin with whiteheads (though I use peeling solutions once a week and I'll start niacinamide next week) can it be better for my skin to fade acne scars than alpha arbutin?
    And can this acid be harmful for long terms like 6-7 months?
    One last question... Can I use aloe gel after ordinary glycolic acid toner as a moisturizer?? It would be be very helpful if you reply me like always.... Lots of love...❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 года назад +2

      Hello. I think Retinol would be the better option for you since you have very oily skin. But yes, you can use Glycolic Acid. Generally, Alpha Arbutin can be used for several months, but I constantly question it since it is a derivative of hydroquinone. That may lead to several issues when used for a more extended period (according to studies). Therefore, I recommend using Retinol, it can help regulate the sebum, and it works well in combination with Niacinamide.
      And you cannot use Aloe Vera as a traditional moisturizer; it is more like Hyaluronic Acid. But since you have oily skin, it may work very well!! :)

      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 года назад

      Well, I am not aware of any long term effects; for this, you need to ask a professional. But I haven't come across any research that claims this. But most studies only used the products for several months. So not 100% sure about this. Regarding the frequency, you have to find the right balance for your needs, meaning if you do feel that it is too much. There isn't much that can happen except for a bit of burning and stinging. If that's the case, also use it less often or give it a break.
      Yes, you can use Aloe gel after Glycolic Acid or lactic acid.
      Regarding the retinol, if you do it cautiously, there won't be any issues. Just start with the lowest strength. 0,2 or 0,3%.

      Yes, I also did not know it initially, and it caused significant irritation 😉 It's very confusing if you do not understand what Glycolic Acid means.
      Anyway, you can use it but don't overdo it, and you need to be careful with certain combinations.
      Paula's Choice has a wide range of Hydrating and Soothing toners, so I recommend looking there if you want to use a toner to balance your skin's pH while adding hydrating and essential oils. (They are also fragrance free)
      www.paulaschoice.com/skin-care-products/toners
      But you can use any brand; just make sure that it is not an exfoliate.

      BHA = Salicylic Acid

      Thank you for the comment. Well, I do have most of it from books and articles that I like to read online. But some I figured out while using those products daily for years now... Also, I had had skincare when I was doing my professional makeup artist degree, and a little when I was doing my caretaker degree.
      And now I am trying to make sense of all of this and put it into practice. But I have learned a lot from the books, especially the following once:
      Cosmeceuticals and Cosmetic Ingredients
      The Skin Type Solution.
      And to be honest, The Ordinary has helped me go much deeper into it, and Paula's Choice. The articles and expert advice is fantastic, you should check it out. It always includes references:

    Hello. This video was very helpful. I have been using a few of The Ordinary's products for a while, but I still haven't gotten the hang of it. I did some research and bought the Glycolic acid toning solution this morning. I never had acne before but I am now suffering from "maskne", dullness, a lot of hyperpigmentation and acne scars.
    I use Azelaic acid and Niacinamide and SPF in the morning. I do the peeling solution on Sundays. I would like to incorporate a retinoid, glycolic acid and mandelic acid at nights. I know that I cannot use all three of these products together. Can you please suggest how I may go about doing this? Can I use one on night 1, one on night 2, one on night 3 and repeat? Or should I perhaps remove the mandelic acid altogether and judy alternate betweenthe other two? Or can I alternate the acids by the month?
    I don't want to use too many products on my face as I am not used to that, and would love to keep my regimen as simple as possible. Also, is it okay to use Panoxyl benzoyl peroxide face wash at nights before those acids I mentioned above? Or is it safe to use benzoyl peroxide spot treatment on a breakout before these acids?
    I apologise for this long message. Looking forward to your help. I love your videos. 😊

      Hey! :)
      Have you already bought a Granactive Retinoid/Retinol, Glycolic Acid, Mandelic Acid and a Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser?
      If not, I recommend just adding a 4%-5% Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser (CeraVe, Differin or Panoxyl). I use Benzoyl Peroxide products myself and they seemed to work best for me!
      As for your acne scars/marks, you are already using Niacinamide and Azelaic Acid. I wouldn't add anything else, unless something isn't working while using a Benzoyl Peroxide cleanser.
      Have a look at my recent video, the application won't change for a lower % of BP cleanser. In your case, I recommend using a 4%-5%, that's enough.

      For sensitive skin, daily exfoliation may be a bit too much, and I am not sure if it is really needed, but it depends on many factors such as age, skin type, etc. So you need to adjust it accordingly to your skin's response.
      You can replace Glycolic Acid with Lactic Acid or Mandelic Acid. Mandelic Acid is the gentlest since it has the largest molecules.

    Hi there, my sister has the Peeling solution, I have used it twice now, the first time I used it I followed your advice on applying only one or two drops on each skin part for about 10 minutes max. What happened was I experienced a slight tingle and small irritation but my skin is supposedly able to tolerate some irritation (my skin is combination to oily, acne-prone skin). Then, my skin started to show more red bumps after using the Peeling solution. I initially thought that the culprit was the Peeling solution, but it could be because of other products at that time, my moisturizer was not the right type for my skin type. I tried it again a few months later, this time using a latex glove, and a slightly thicker application for only 5 minutes this time. There was more intense pain, but it went away for some time (it burned at the areas that I picked on oops my fault), and I straight away used a moisturizer to reduce dryness. My question is, is it possible to have more acne after using Peeling solution, even though my skin is supposedly able to withstand harsh acids? (emphasis on supposedly) I have used acids before in cleansers, and in serums but at lower concentrations and have other buffering ingredients in the formulation (assuming that it would be gentler on the skin) and it helps my acne a bit. Sorry for making it very long. ;) Thank uuu

      Hey!
      If you have acne prone skin, I recommend looking for an acne treatment such as a Benzoyl Peroxide cream/gel or something with Retinol like the Differin gel. The Ordinary does not have any acne treatments.
      Using the peeling solution and getting more bumps can mean two things...either you've irritated your skin or because it is an exfoliating mask and you have acne prone skin - acne will show up quicker than usual because it removes the dead skin cells on your skin surface :)
      What else are you currently using? And have you seen improvements?

      Now, as i have changed my bad habits the acne flare ups is still there but at a lower amount (only two or 3 acnes per week or so), my cystic acne reduced a TON although it took some pain, and mostly because of COSRX ingredients. The first good cleanser that i used contains just a gentle willowbark extract and mostly calming and non irritating ingredients. It was the best, then my PIH are not disappearing.
      My favourite product is the iUnik Rose Galactomyces Synergy Serum and it really helped my dark spots. For acne though, im still fighting for it, i wanted to focus on using exfoliators more such as introducing the aha or bha serums from other brands or even the toning solution from the ordinary, but since youve said that benzoyl peroxide works better then i should splurge more on topical acne medication, right? I want to use retinol, but im just too scared to use im afraid that maybe it could affect my hormones, or my growth, or maybe not even layerable with other products. But yeah im working on finding a gentler cleanser (The Inkey List is too pricey for me here where i live and neutrogena oil free acne cleanser is too harsh).

      @@MelissaVanDijkOfficial right now this is what im targeting. I want to reduce hyperpigmentations and acne. This is my skincare plan:
      Cleanser and toner for targeting acne.
      Other serums/essences and moisturisers for hyperpigmentation.
      Cant forget sunscreen.
      Is this a good plan for targeting both acne and hyperpigmentation?

Im now in my late 40's, I dont have any skin problems but starting having melasma on my face. Im thinking if I can use the 7% glycolic acid toner + retinol serum + azelaic cream at night? Hope you will notice my message. Thanks & Godbless

      Hey! :)
      You may have success with topical over-the-counter products like the ones you've mentioned. However, Hydroquinone is often prescribed for hyperpigmentation concerns like melasma. Over time, I've learned that, similar to acne, diet can play a significant role-such as consuming too much added sugar, processed food, fast food, or any food intolerances-which can influence hormones and lead to 'wrong' responses in the body.
      Glycolic Acid (you can use any serums, except for the ones that conflict): ruclips.net/video/NE3j3LPcaGE/видео.htmlfeature=shared
      Azelaic Acid: ruclips.net/video/oRYp_RzqOXk/видео.htmlfeature=shared

      Hey! :)
      What's your skin type?
      What kind of hyperpigmentation do you have and do you have sensitive skin?
      Usually, it is recommended to go with an AHA (Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid or Mandelic Acid). However, if you have sensitive skin, Glycolic and Lactic Acid can sting on the skin. In that case, you want to look into Mandelic Acid or PHA :)

      It is not the best product for oily skin, and your cleanser has a higher pH. The best would be to use a Salicylic Acid cleanser with a lower pH and not use the AHA (Glycolic Acid)
      AHAs are generally used for dry sun-damaged skin, which is not sensitive.
      BHA (Salicylic Acid) is usually used for oily acne-prone skin that is sensitive.
      The best Salicylic Acid cleanser I have tried so far is The Inkey List Salicylic Acid cleanser (with 2% Salicylic Acid). And for BHA leave on exfoliants, there are several formulations; Paula's Choice has the most popular, their 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. So you could use one of them. (I prefer the cleanser)
      I suggest doing it like this:
      Morning:
      The Inkey List SA Cleanser
      SPF
      Evening:
      The Inkey List SA Cleanser
      (Hydrating Toner, Serum or Essence)
      Niacinamide
      The Ordinary Moisturizer

    Also, after using glycolic acid toner can we use cerave SA cream?

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial

      It sounds like a lot, and the SA alone should ideally do the job. However, if you choose to use both, I would suggest alternating them and observing the results. Be mindful of the frequency, as using them too often might quickly become too much for the skin, potentially leading to breakouts or sensitivities.
