    What I like about Narwhal is that they're using shapes that are either unique or have been out of fashion for a good while. Take the pill shape of the Nautilus and this wavy cap band, for example. The variety of materials is also quite interesting.
    What I absolutely despise is that they use the beyond-garbage-tier Moonman housings. Putting that rear O-ring in a position where it has to grind through the internal grip section threads should be criminal, it gets chewed up in no time at all. The way Opus 88 does it, with the O-ring squeezed between the back of the housing and a little ledge in the grip section, is the proper way to do it.
    I've also had a pen from Narwhal where it looks like they ran the lathe so fast that the temperature got high enough to soften the plastic and deform the grip section to the point where the nib housing cracked after a few months.

    I like KWZ sheen machine 2, but I also like Organics Studio Nitrogen (and the Baltimore Pen Show exclusive Atomic Nitrogen, which is even more saturated). For many years I had a pen constantly inked in Baystate Blue. BTW: KWZ sheen machine 2 is very similar to Organics Studio Walden Pond, one of my favorites. Different folks have different levels of comfort with "difficult" inks, and this is fine, and how the world should be. Complete uniformity would be boring. And I have a pen or two inked with an Iron Gall ink (Platinum).

    Thank you so much for the review. I was eye-ing this finish, and in your video it looks even more beautiful then the pictures I have seen. I was kind of meh about the overall design, but that material is something special. The wave band is also quite alluring. I have a couple Narwhals in my collection, and they are solid pens. Not what I normally reach for, but I am never dissappointed when I do. The nibs all write better then some of my gold nibs. Maybe Narwhal tunes them in-house? Anyway, I will definitely need to wait awhile before I can make my next fountain pen purchase. However, when that day comes, this Narwhal will be high on the list of contenders.

    Great review, nice model, but unfortunately it doesn't cost a fortune like it seems it should. I guess I'll have to get one. It will be the second pen I will have with threads on the front of the grip section. For some reason I like that approach, even though the threads are difficult to clean after filling. 🙄

    • @philnaunton7181
      @philnaunton7181 Год назад +1

      Y'know, this company really appears to be going places. This is quite a competent design, particularly for the cost of joining.
      Preferring the more conservative color approach, I chose the Aurora version, which is quite the looker.
      To avoid the issue with getting ink in the front section screw threads, I filled it with a syringe, which I often do with piston fillers, taking out the nib and feed. Much less messy when it is possible to do so. Easy in the case of this pen. It also allows the pen to be filled up all the way in one shot.
      Thank you Doodlebud for the enticement review. I now have four Navhalur models and, yes, no regrets, even though I broke my Schuylkill by turning the piston fill assembly the wrong way in disassembly. 😂

  • @PalashBackup
    @PalashBackup Год назад +2

    While cleaning, I just put the drops back into the bottle. Then use the water to flush out the ink in the feed and nib. People have warned me of possible contamination issues, but I haven't got them personally except for the old Private Reserve Chocolat (which turned green and mouldy on its own).

    Was a time that a flashy design or material meant a lower quality pen. More conservative design and patterns on the higher end ones. But tastes have changed. 😉 (Could you picture that material on a Parker 51 of the 1950s?)
    Though it's generally hard to not copy another pen, and the shape is very popular from the 1930s Sheaffer's Balance on, there's several somewhat subtle tweaks. Until recently, really wasn't much available in the Americas in a piston filler. Almost exclusively European. The cap band is that subtle little bit that shows an attention to detail. Really nice! Fit and finish is well done.
    Thanks for letting me see this pen!

      Practice is the thing that helps with hand writing. The right pen and nib are a contributing factor, but practicing your writing is the big thing. Just like wearing the proper footwear while working out in the gym helps for sure, but its not the thing that gets you in shape 😉

  • @tayterlik
    @tayterlik 8 месяцев назад

    I have a different model, the Nautilus Stylophora Berry with BB nib; it does write nicely and wet, but only for 5 pages or so, then it dries out. A shake or two is enough to make it write again, so the problem is not a serious production flaw, but it is still annoying. Flushed the pen with a bit of dishwasher detergent, no progress. Tested with a wet inks like "Writer's blood" from Diamine, no progress. It feels as if during writing - in the part immediately behind the feed grows a bubble of air which stops the ink from flowing. I have not disassembled the pen yet, somehow I hope it will get better after few refill/clean stages.

      @@rogerboucher1913 it's in my nature to be like that. I made precision laser measurement equipment, so the tiny details is what mattered. A small burr left on a part could be a source of measurement error only noticeable during temperature change of a system. If that happens, you now have a $100K perfectly engineered paper weight. I had to ensure that didn't happen. So yup, I notice things 🧐

    What's your opinion on that wavy cap edge? I assume it serves no purpose beyond "Look at me!"

    • @Doodlebud
      @Doodlebud  Год назад +3

      Well using that same rationale, anything other than a plain cap band with zero detail says "look at me." It doesn't sever a purpose beyond adding reinforcement to the resin body. However, I think it was a nice finishing touch to make it stand out and tie into the theme of the pen. A pen is a pretty simple object so it can be difficult to make it different from others. Its an extra area of detail that is usually overlooked. It might not appeal to everyone, but I appreciate the thought and time that went into something that it typically passed over.

    Perfect and thorough review. Yes, this pen is a looker, a stunning design and beautiful colors. But... far too overpriced for a pen made or assembled in China. That's why it won't be added to my "must have" list. Regarding KWZ Sheen Machine 2: since I detected the fountain pen world this became my favorite ink. The onl ink I'm not happy with are Noodler"s inks. I got a 50 ml bottle of their red Saguaro ink, a really nice and rich color, but it requires thorough cleaning, even disassembling the feed and nib to remove stubborn leftovers almost immediately after the pen got empty. BTW, the rotary tool already came in handy, of course a very careful use is required, due to its speed. It's is a lot of fun and that's the main thing, I guess.

The rest of the body looks very different though. Where are these pens made? I can't find any info on their own website. Their FAQ has nothing about it and their "about us" section is just a bunch of marketing nonsense and magical handwaving about the spirit of the narwhal and the magical power of writing and virtue signaling about standing with LGBTQ. Going so far out of their way to not state the products' origin is absurd and tells me it's probably China. The fact that they even offer urushi pens at nearly $1000 and STILL don't state their place of origin is absurd and I can't imagine anyone spending that kind of cash on a pen made in a mystery factory in the hinterlands. The price point of most of their pens is on par with American-made brands like Edison and Franklin-Christoph, so how do they justify those prices for a Chinese-made pen? Does a nice looking resin blend make it worth it for a pen that should probably cost less than half of what it does? Maybe the price is justified after all, that's ultimately for the customer to decide, but this lack of transparency is a total deal breaker for me with any fountain pen brand.
