Aren't we all just learning to communicate through space and time? Reminds me of that Aldous Huxley quote from "The Doors of Perception":
"We live together, we act on, and react to, one another; but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselves. The martyrs go hand in hand into the arena; they are crucified alone. Embraced, the lovers desperately try to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single self-transcendence; in vain. By its very nature every embodied spirit is doomed to suffer and enjoy in solitude. Sensations, feelings, insights, fancies-all these are private and, except through symbols and at second hand, incommunicable. We can pool information about experiences, but never the experiences themselves. From family to nation, every human group is a society of island universes."

If met with a statement like "you should have used more blue" a useful approach is to challenge that: "Oh? why do you think that?"
That moves it from their ideas vs your ideas into the realm of discussion.
Once a discussion is established you are in a better place to test their statements and you are also more open to hearing feedback as it can be backed with their reasons and weighed against your own.
    :)

Hey Peter, in regards to your critiques issue, the simple answer is yes, just stand there and take it. Many schools actually don't allow the student whose work is being critiqued to say anything (which is wack honestly). But overall, critiques are there to give you perspective outside your own. They aren't meant to punch down or belittle the art or the artist, they're there so that you can gain insight from peers and potential consumers. If you feel a critique is unnecessary or that what that person is saying is just wrong, then don't listen to them. I've had plenty of professors make a suggestion to a student that, when implemented, made the piece worse. So don't take what other people say as gospel, it's just their opinion that you can choose to incorporate or not. I don't think defending yourself is wrong, per se, but it devalues the experience of hearing out your peers, and giving their thoughts a fair chance. Just because you believe a piece to have just the right amount of blue (as you said) it may look better if you used it elsewhere strategically. It also may look unbalanced. (This is also the wonderful power of digital art, where we can see just what something would look like slightly differently)
Oh boy I know that was long, but hopefully it helps. TL;DR, critique isn't an attack, it's an open discussion about different views and opinions. Its best when you absorb what others say, and make your own (now better informed) choices from there.

Everyone see's art through their own personal growth, personal experiences, and personal taste/tactile. I have always defended my work but learned to not let it show too much in the moment, but rather take everything into consideration as an act in front of everyone. Every now and again someone will suggest something that will be beneficial but until then, i would just nod, and defend your art in a small manor, not to show a complete blocking of constructive criticism. There is always room for improvement but how handle the criticism will determine weather or not you are growing as an artist and individual. That is just experience and suggestion to you but you do you. Thanks for sharing, you are very talented.

Remember "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" ... one mans "Too much Blue" is another mans "Perfect amount of Blue" , as long as your not getting upset and defensive over the critiques than just take others opinions as a way to understand more of the world :) you don't have to agree but understanding is powerful :)

  • @DannySabraArt
    @DannySabraArt 3 года назад +25

in my experience after two degrees, if it's a prof giving the critique it's good to push back in the form of a question so that you can learn more from them "why is it not enough blue? There's blue here and here..."
If on the other hand it's another student and they aren't obviously someone with enviable knowledge and skill then they're probably just making stuff up to get through the class or they're trying hard but they don't know much and you take it all with a grain of salt. Especially since you have a lot of artistic experience and are older and wiser than your average college kid, it's not your first rodeo and your intuition as an artist is finally honed... to me school is about learning as much as i can so even when I disagreed with a prof's assessment I always tried to get to the bottom of why they thought that way.. if it was a peer? i didn't care too much. Maybe thats arrogance but I think it's fine. I don't know why they have peers review each others work when their critiques are most likely not based on anything substantial.

  • @dianachase7867
    @dianachase7867 3 года назад +49

I wonder if your peers struggle to produce a critique? If it’s expected and required..maybe that pressure causes a little panic and they pull things out of the air..which isn’t making sense to you. ? I think I would feel like a deer in the headlights if I HAD to critique your creations. Without thinking too much about it I suggest you listen and thank them and leave it be. Ultimately doesn’t the critique say more about the giver than the receiver?
Maybe is it less of a need to defend as it is to have the last word? I’m just asking. You do seem to have a heightened need to feel understood. So you launch into your rationale..but then quickly realize there is no need to express your preferences. (I do this too!) I could be all full of bologna. I love your creations and videos. You are teaching all of us. Thank you!

#1 thing I learned in school (not art, but engineering) was that my classmates' "constructive criticism" was usually not useful. It typically came from a teacher with not enough time to correct every student's work, so they asked students to peer-review. It's incredibly useful for people in a profession that actually care to help each other, but when you're freshmen or sophomore college students, the peer-reviews usually just look for flaws so they can get their own grade and get out. Good peer-review and criticism comes with a discussion and sound reasoning from both sides of the discussion.

I want to start out by saying great video as always, I'm looking forward to seeing the full sketchbook!

For what you were saying about criticism, I think I'm the same way in crits, I am usually pretty confident that there are errors and mistakes in my work, but I find that a lot of the criticisms I get are preference based or just plain wrong, so I find myself defending my work more than I would like too, only because I don't think half the criticisms I get are even remotely close to why I don't like the way things I made turn out.
The problem is then I get really into my head about whether or not my dismissal of certain criticisms is just some subconscious defense mechanism and if my work is even worse than I thought, and from then on it's just an downwards spiral of mistrusting my own eyes and all positive feedback I have ever received.
The moral of the story being I don't think you're alone in that concern.

Peter, peer criticism only works to a point. And I would say to minor point. It’s why I find many review sites to be at fault. After all, so much of art, music, writing, cooking, etc., is subjective and reflects both the skill and opinions of the person(s) creating it. I was at a Mexican restaurant and thought the food was great. Later, I went to give them a review on Yelp and a bunch of people gave them bad reviews saying the food wasn’t spicy enough. So, different strokes (pen strokes) for different folks. Personally, I’d like to see more of the other type of artwork you do, beyond your sketches. I’m very curious to see what you’ve been having to defend.

On the subject of taking criticism, I think theres a balance:
On one hand, its great to hear others opinions and to take them in consideration, especially when it’s enlightening or when it genuinely criticizes something you need work on.
On the other, however, theres still a level of artistic integrity that we need to have, and all criticism, whether good or bad, at the end of the day are opinions, and if you believe that what you did was the very best you can do, or came out the way you wanted, then you can defend your decision for doing that.
Criticism is a two way street, pieces can be criticized, but so can the critic, not everyone is going to have the same opinion about YOUR artwork, and that’s okay! Thats the beauty of showing your work to the world! Everyones a critic, but its how you interpret that criticism that defines your progression!

Art is such and opinionated thing that is meant to make people feel something so you are bound that have people that feel differently about it, some people will like it, some people won’t. At the end of the day, what is really important is if you like it and if you feel you did that piece justice. If you say it has enough blue then it has enough blue

I was just thinking about writing in the comments a commendation (with a sliiiiightly negative reminiscence) when you started talking about how you might not take seemingly negative constructive criticism well. I, as an artist, completely understand your position. Now, I'm at an impasse. Alas, here goes...
The pieces in this video were both accomplished and impeccable. (I do love the blue one mainly because that's my favorite color.) When you use clearer lines and shapes (minus your paintings because of the nature of the beast, of course), your work finds its "PeterDrawness" with greater expression. Your bulbous characters from the (rather recent) past always felt as if you were stuck in a dark sludge that had been kept trapped by uncontrollable vines where once clear lines used would jettison. These past few months your work has felt reinvigorated. The fun you're having is pushing through the pixels of your audiences' various devices.
You seem like a healthier and happier you, now. Therein laid my original conundrum.

With my university the lecturers would say their criticisms about the project and if you are able to defend and justify what you've done they are more willing to understand your mindset and will be less likely to act on the criticism. Almost like defending yourself in court. They told us that we need to believe in our process more than anything else because that's what makes a good designer, not someone who follows someone elses rules but rather someone re-inventing the rules or living by their own.

The point of critiques are to learn what others are seeing in your work, have an open discussion and learn how to talk about your work. As a professor I want to see my students actively listening, taking notes, and responding with thoughtful statements, rebuttals, and questions. Each professor conducts critiques in our own way, if you are growing as an artist then you are doing what you need to do in class.

There is no reason not to defend your choices as long as you are willing to accept that you could be wrong. If someone can't back up their criticism then it is not valid so a healthy debate on disagreements is always a good thing.

Really enjoyed this video, especially the blue ink drawing. Blue has a cooler appearance than the color black, and is easier to look at.
Please consider drawing with other colors.

    Hello Peter
i enjoy your work very much ,I see the situation that you speek about
at the end of the video like this
everybody thinks their opinnions make them who they are ,
in trying to put some of themselfs onto yourself,by putting their opinnions onto your shoulders, they try to make their image of you ,more agreeable with their image of themselves
there is no right or wrong way of doing anything in life ,
its just that bunch of people are trying to protect their own identity in countless different ways without realizing it,
Let them have their opinion ,and if you so choose, allow yourself to keep yours ,
    LOVE YOU
    have a nice day ❤

Okay, Peter. This is how they go. The model with the red aluminum trim ring around it is the Moonman M2. The one with the flat spot on the side to keep it from rolling but is otherwise just a clear rod of acrylic is the Moonman C1. The one with the little "goblet" shape so it stands upright on end is the Moonman S5. And the fat one you call the Mini is the Moonman Q1.
I don't have an S5 but I have the other three. :) I have the same problem with the Q1 of the cap not staying posted if I somehow apply ANY side pressure to the cap while it is posted, where it just "pops" off.
The Moonman Wancai Mini is a tiny bit shorter than the Q1 you have in this video, and about as big around as the C1. The cap screws on to post so that it becomes comfortably long to write with. I like (LOVE!) Moonman's EF nibs and have the extra-fine nibs in almost all the Moonman pens I have. You should get the Wancai mini and try it out.

As an artist and teacher, I would have to say that not many people, especially at the undergraduate level, understand the purpose of critiques. Many take a critique of the work as a critique of their person. Some tips I give on how to take a crit are, 1) don't take anything personally. Your art is not you and you are not your art. One can like your art and not like you or one can like you and not your art. 2) don't point out the flaws or problems in your work. If the viewer doesn't see it as a flaw then it may or may not be one. 3) the crit is there to give you a chance to view the work through another person's eyes. It is not to make you do it their way. (this goes back to the "you should have used more blue")
We think of a crit as a negative when it is simply a way to discuss pros and cons of the work. Yes, you should be able to defend your choices but you should also be open to the possibility that your choices are not automatically the best choice. After all, is the student in school to learn, or do they have it all figured out already?
    BTW, love your channel!

As for jobs, I work in film and tv as a makeup artist, carpenter, and grip, plus filling in on other departments as needed. I need to take a break from carpentery work though, as I seem to have developed a skin allergy to sawdust. Most likely the formaldehyde used in plywood. Good thing I didn't become a mortician!

since you asked, my jobs kinda cool.. I always need a marker and felt tip pen clipped onto me and I use all metal and refillable ones, as well as a slim, all metal utility knife. Compact, sturdy, functional tools that become an extension of yourself is indeed a shared joy of mine. If you want to put some attention towards clothing I think small pen pockets would be very satisfying for you... I could see you rocking a nice apron with drawing tools too. There might even be some kind of squiggly ruler or functional drawing tool that you like enough to want on your waist or chest at all times! I say squiggly ruler cause you could include a curve from it in all your drawings and then sell it for thousands and try a new ruler and repeat haha. Infinite possibilities for an artist like yourself, little items can be given power

Strangest pen I've ever seen - it's really fun to be able to see the magnified image of the Iridium tip. Most fun review of a pen I've seen. It's sometimes funny how these reviews turn out. I saw a Lamy Safari get a belting awhile ago. I'm a Pelikan 805 fan but I went out and bought a Lamy immediately. Thank you, Peter.

Very similar to the Tombow Japanese pen, made for people with arthritis. VERY similar, except the Moonman doesn't have the same cartoonish nib the Tombow had.
"Why don't I have one, yet?" The anthem of everyone who's deep down the rabbit hole of collecting fountain pens. I know, because I'm one. 😁
Nice to see your impressions of this pen! Thanks for sharing!
Looks like you have the same opinion of "copies" as I have. Copying has always been a thing with fountain pens. All the old ones look basically the same, except for the Conklin Crescent Filler. Then, in 1911 Sheaffer came up with the lever filler, because Conklin was really litigious about their filling system. After that, it seems like the gloves were off about copying. Almost everything from the 1920s and 30s were flattops, like what gets called a "Duofold" design today. Again, Sheaffer was the innovator, and came out with the Balance, which gave the basic cigar shape even today. (Is the Montblanc Meisterstück 149 just a "copy," then? 😁) Parker 51 inspired the metal cap and almost everyone after that, went with a hooded or semi-hooded nib worldwide for a while.) Moonman has a reputation for being a manufacturer of copies, but, like you said, they still have their own spin on it. They have several that really look like out of production Montblanc pens, but they're clearly not a Montblanc. It's those who try to pass off a cheap copy ("Lamy, made in China," almost all "Parker Sonnet" pens from China...) I have an issue with.
Oh, as to the Jinhao nib: I have not found a Jinhao in the last year or so that wasn't a decent, workhorse pen (I have a few. A few more than I really need... 😁) I have at least one in use at all times.

But hell yeah you can defend your work in class, you are the creator of it, there are always things we can improve on but if you like it than that's how it's suppose to be. How can someone else know what image you have in your head and wish to portray
