Possibly my all time favorite artist. Steve Harley always came across as such a lovely man. I met him once in Bradford at a live gig. He was just in the audience and only i noticed him, with his cool hat . I sidled over and said hi, and we ended up over the road having a pint together.
Rest in peace, you beautiful soul. ❤

Saw Steve in England around 5 years ago and he was brilliant...just him on guitar, a guy on an electric violin and a drummer.....amazing night,.....quite folky and Dylanesque.! This song started out as a slow bluesy number. Steve's producer, Alan Parsons (yes, that Alan Parsons) suggested it be sped up, with the ooh, la, la's being added etc. Despite the happy title, it's not a fun song. It's about three of his band members who demanded to be able to write songs for the band - despite them being hired on the basis that Steve was the sole songwriter. When Steve didn't cave in, they left. Only the drummer - Stu Elliott - remained. If you listen to the lyrics, you can see he is having a shot at his former bandmates. One of the three members who left - Paul Jeffreys - was killed in the Lockerbie disaster in 1988. He and his wife were flying out for their honeymoon.

It's great that you did this and got around to this band and artist, it's just sad it being under these circumstances, R.I.P. Steve. 😢 Steve and the band had a number of hits in the '70s, such as:
    "Judy Teen",
    "Mr Soft",
"Here Comes The Sun" (cover of The Beatles song),
    "Sebastian",
    "Psychomodo",
    "Mr Raffles",
    "(I Believe) Love's a Prima Donna".
There are many more but these are good ones to continue with.
Perhaps you might do, "The Beatles - Here Comes The Sun" and covers by 'Steve Harley and The Cockney Rebel' and 'Nina Simone' for Wednesday this week?

Thank you, Chris and Cynthia for honouring the music of the late Steve Harley, he was born Stephen Malcolm Ronald Nice on 27 February 1951. Harley's first job was as a journalist, he intentially got fired by not wearing a tie to work and growing his hair long. He formed Cockney Rebel in 1972, their debut single "Sebastian" was a hit in Europe, but it failed to chart in the UK. "Sebastian" was a brilliant and lavish rock opera which starts off quietly and builds up in volume towards the end with full orchestration, sadly it went straight over the heads of the UK record buying public. "Sebastian" is well worth a listen.
Cockney Rebel's "Mr Soft" was used in the UK tv advertisement for Trebor Soft Mints. The non album track "Judy Teen" became Cockney Rebel's first charting single in 1974 after the failure of "Sebastian" to chart.

Fir folk my age this is a classic and a must sing along n tap toes to banger !
Yes it was rereleased a few times n hit the charts all 3 times in the 70’s in the uk at least . He had a “unique “ voice and phrasing , but it fitted this song brilliantly .
As Sandy 303 mentioned yesterday , most folk just take this song at face value as a cheery song , it’s not 😅.. it’s a bitter swipe at his band mates who let him down .
Super glad you took this nudge from the subscribers and played this all time classic , it’s very much appreciated and enjoyed ✊ loved both tracks tonight , I’m going to bed s happy chap - cheers 🍻

I just left you a question on a DD reaction about Wed covers & it's actually for this song.
He was so unique, cool & fun.
And I absolutely adore this song.
This is a live version fr/ Brit Music TV show (Top of the Pops) where he messed up the lyrics & like a champ didn't show any embarrassment & kept singing… I thought it actually made the performance even more fun watching him having to re-sing the line while you can see band members looking & smiling at each instance, but while continuing to play w/o missing a beat…
    ruclips.net/video/OQ2K4qRABCM/видео.html
(In case you wanna watch to Make You Smile)
After learning from an Interview on YT about his life & early med struggles w/ polio, it made me look into him more & I just kept admiring him further, esp his outlook on life & challenges; particularly given my own struggles being partially disabled, tho more fully of late, primarily fr/ my uncommon genetic disorder: #EDS (#hEDS type), & all its comorbidities affecting most systems, & then the needless war on intractable pain patients & the med treatment we had for decades w/o any mjr incidents, taken away to decrease prescriptions (which happened via threatening Drs, yet it still nvr decreased substance use/ODs/addiction/death over past decade -except w/i the Chronic pain community)
Ugh, sry… Anyway, seeing him not slow down, work hard, & not be ashamed of his limitations is very inspirational.
Here's 1 of several articles I read about him talking thru the struggles & going way beyond overcoming them, if interested:

The first line up of Cockney Rebel (not the one we see on this video) was my favorite band in 1973-74 and their two albums ("The Human Menagerie" and "The Psychomodo") are total masterpieces. Unfortunately, the band splitted and this song is about the reasons of this split (mainly money). If some later albums from Steve Harley were fine, he never reached the genius of his debuts. Sad he died anyway. Of course "Make Me Smile" was his major hit even if it's far from being his best song. PS. He was actually a Dylan fan.

But I love this song so much and can actually fool people into thinking it's Steve Harley singing it, because I have a deep range and at my best, can be very elastic. Probably because for most of my life, I've been doing take offs. Hasn't always been a good thing, as it took a while for me to find my own voice and tone.

Sad to hear of his passing, If you only listen to one more of their songs I would recommend Sabastian which is epic, their biggest hit was Judy Teen as far as I know.

With this song, Steve was pissing on his former band mates who wanted to ditch the band's music style and start playing heavy metal. The first iteration of Cockney Rebel broke up over it.

German music producer Frank Farian had released an album in the late 80's together with a bunch of his studio musicians under the name 'Far Corporation' with cover versions of well-known Classic Rock songs, including Steve Harley's song 'Sebastian', which was released as a Single.
Farian too had died only recently, and he's best known as the producer for Milli Vanilli and Boney M, in whose music he also sang those signature deep male vocals - with dancer Bobby Farell miming to them during TV performances 😅
Far Corporation also covered Zed Leppelin's 'Stairway To Heaven', and it's a crack up to suddenly hear that Boney M voice pop up at one point 😄
Maybe also do a Frank Farian (pronounced "Frunk Fahreeyahn") tribute video!? I'd recommend Boney M's song 'Steppenwolf'
    😀👍

I was 11 when this exploded in Australia circa '75. I thought he was really hot, but my stupid friends couldn't see it because they were too caught up in Rollermania. RIP

    He wasn’t a Cockney.
But he was a great musician.
    Deptford I think?
    Or somewhere down that way?
This is one of the all time London old school pub jukebox tunes.
We used to regularly take over our end the bar and hammer this out about 15 handed on a Saturday night, three sheets to the wind, much to the amazement of the tourists and self proclaimed hipsters.
Swiftly followed up by The Kinks.
