Thanks again guys, of course it has to be the Ferry version for me, released in '93 and featured Robin Trower on guitar.(I always thought the Hollies version was the original)
The Hollies' version was the first one I remember hearing and I really liked it .. I later heard Doris Troy's great original, and I now like that one a little bit better .. In my memory, I didn't think the Hollies version was quite so fast, but following after Doris here it almost sounds just a tad rushed .. Brian's version didn't really work for me, but Linda Ronstadt does a very good one.
Great stuff from the great Doris Troy, well known artist to Northern Soul scene due to "I'll Do Anything (He Wants Me to Do)", obviously I know this by her too, and quite a few other tracks. For me it's a win for the original by Doris, I knew 'The Hollies' version too, even though I'm normally quite a big Bryan Ferry fan there was a period in the '90 when he was doing some more Avant Garde stuff which for me was very hit or miss, I didn't like his version of this, but I commend him trying to do something different with it. As for covers of this song by male singers, I know of two, Iain Matthews and Eddie Lovette Cynthia.
The Hollies for me, then Doris, and way way back is Bryan Ferry. Cynthia said it sounded like 80's and Chris said 90's for Bryan Ferry, but it sounded like a phooking eternity for me.
Doris Troy was the clear winner for me. I like what Brian Ferry did with the song. I didn't much care for The Hollies version. It wasn't bad, but it sounded a little rushed and thin.
My request for the week is *Hoodoo Gurus - Bittersweet nzoz1985* Please be sure you use the nzoz1985 version because all other uploads are inferior. Also, Richard Clapton's ''Girls On The Avenue'' didn't do too badly on your channel. A reminder that the following exists and should do just as well: *Richard Clapton - Deep Water (Audio + Video merge 2024)* It isn't my request for this week, but it is a reminder...
Doris Trey's version - didn't enjoy instrumental ( not keen on piano) Hollies version vocals were too high ( sounded whiney) Brian Ferry's version was too slow. Best of a bad bunch- voted for Brian Ferry as instrumentally more modern and vocally more mellow.
Bryan ferry’s version was absolutely awful. The hollies version was number one for me as there version was top quality and they were packed with power.Well done to the hollies.
Imho.. it doesn’t matter how many artists covered this song , it’s basic 3 chord keek and no matter how talented and creative you are if the base material you are working with is pish then your on to Plums right from the get go … No winners here .. though I should note that Brian Ferry should be thrashed within an inch of his life for his pretentious attempt at an Avant Garde version of this dull as ditchwater track …. Awful 🤦♂️ 👍🏴
Hi Jay. Yep, the raw material on this song isn't great - not my cuppa char. I do feel sorry for all those Roxy Music fans from the early 70s when they had to deal with Ferry's lounge lizard muzak in his solo stuff. Hotel lift tunes!

The Hollies for me. Have you heard their other great 60s songs? Such as, I'm Alive, Stay, Here I Go Again., Carrie Anne, I Can't Let Go.
Give all 3 a medal but The Hollies get The Gold medal 🏅

Well, all 3 are good, but my vote goes to Linda Ronstadt!!
They're all great. Erm... except for Bryan Ferry's.
The Hollies for me, by a nose from Doris Troy.
micro differences in my liking but; Hollies , Troy, Ferry 123.

This is such a great track but I'll stick wi the Original, ta. Klaus Nomi also did a great Version.
The Ferry version bears only a passing resemblance. Awful.
