I've been an American fan of these guys for forty years. Back in '86, the Gurus were touring the States with another up-and-coming group, The Bangles, and I swear on my life, it was like the two bands were separated at birth. Gurus' drummer, Mark Kingsmill, was the same height as Bangles drummer Debbi Peterson; Bangles' guitarist Vicki Peterson looked like a female version of Gurus' guitarist Brad Sheppard. If Dave Faulkner looked more like Michael Hutchence; he and Suzanne Hoffs would have been on the front cover of Rolling Stone. The Bangles and Hoodoo Gurus were perfect bed buddies, but things changed when ''Manic Monday'' became a hit for The Bangles, and Gurus were relegated to being the opening act. The Gurus took it all in their stride and had a laugh about it. The music video for Gurus' single ''Good Times'' has footage of that Bangles/Gurus tour and features The Bangles on backing vocals.

Just updating about the Gurus today.. they are currently touring (Brazil last night) and a US tour in September ..details on their website and FB. Marshall their FOH sound man hails from my hometown, Launceston Tasmania Australia.
It wasn't just the music and the songs that attracted me to all those Aussie bands in the 80's. It was also the lifestyle that came with it and the wild and unpredictable nights when seeing a band like Hoodoo Gurus, Divinyls, Lime Spiders, Beasts Of Bourbon, The Johnnys, Cold Chisel, The Hard-Ons, Died Pretty, Celibate Rifles, INXS, Midnight Oil, The Saints, The Radiators... and the list goes on.... I saw a lot of UK and US bands in Australia and overseas and they just seemed too calculated, like they did a lot of thinking before doing their first gig... Aussie bands were just raw and real about it, in spite of Chrissy wearing a school uniform, or Hoodoo Gurus wearing their 60's gear or Michael Hutchence being a sex symbol. the carpet was sticky, the beer smell was in the air, the women were sexy and horny, the bands were loud and talented and if the venue was near a beach, you could probably go for a night swim in the summer... When I talk about rock of the 70's and 80's to people overseas, they're usually talking about their bar bands, their stadium bands, their little indie bands, their punk bands.. everything they say feels like something they studied in a book, like you had to be a certain type of fashion or tribe to see a band.. you couldn't just rock up in a t-shirt and jean shorts, get drunk, have a laugh and rock out... That's why the thought of my young life without Aussie rock bands like Hoodoo Gurus in the 80's is depressing..
Surprised you haven't done '1000 Miles Away' yet but is a great great build in that one. And there is 'Death Defying' as well'. Great to hear you checking out the Gurus.
Quite big on the US college circuit & college radio in the 80's. All through the 90's they were the most fun gigs that I went to. High energy, crowd surfing and always good vibes amongst the crowd.
Love the Hoodoos and love this song !! .. Just about my favourite track from them, but they had many, many more gems .. Saw them live in Melbourne in the mid 80s, and they were fantastic !

I couldn't keep up with rent because I was seeing bands every night, and friends got sick of me freeloading. My dad used to ask why I couldn't save my money to see real bands like INXS or Australian Crawl, and I told him that I had already seen those bands when they were unknown, and now I'm seeing new unknowns like Le Hoodoo Gurus, Sunnyboys, etc. Anyway, this song took them out of the ''new'' basket and by then I was seeking out The Johnnys, Died Pretty and Beasts Of Bourbon. I finally get to hear this band after reading about them in Sounds back in the 80s. Those were the pre internet days when you simply could not get to hear every band you read about. It's a good song and well produced but I was expecting something a bit scuzzier. Back in the UK in the mid to late 80s we have the Grebo scene (of a similar guitar based nature) and I would suggest any of the following songs: What Gives You The Idea - by Crazyhead Speed King - by Zodiac Mindwarp TV Cabbage - by Gaye Bykers on Acid Oh Grebo I Think I Love You - Pop Will Eat Itself Red Berry Joy Town -by the Wonderstuff However, as i appear to be the Grebo contingent of 1 - i doubt that i will get much traction with these requests!

I love hoodoo gurus! 💖🔥 Not sure what you've watched of theirs, but will suggest my girl (not that 60's song), miss free love, what's my scene (I think that's the one you've watched) castles in the air, like wow wipe out, a thousand miles away and come anytime. I have a deep voice too and yes, it's definitely hard not to sound monotone, so I use a lot of expression and emphasis, to make it sound more interesting. But I love hearing the lower register and baritone voices, like my Dad's voice, I find them soothing.
A really good place to start with Hoodoo Gurus is their 1992 compilation CD ''Electric Soup''. It has all their prime 80's singles and is a good crash course into the band's catalogue. ''Come Anytime'' and ''Another World'' are prime cuts.
They remind me of a friend who used to have their gig posters all over the walls in the house she rented. It'd be great if you checked out their contemporaries like The Johnnys and Lime Spiders and a slightly latter band called The Hummingbirds.
I liked bands like Hoodoo Gurus, Dynamic Hepnotics, Mental As Anything and Mondo Rock. They were a good escapism from the very serious Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel. Nothing against those groups, but they weren't why I enjoyed music.

The Hoodoos have been a pub rock staple here for years, and although they’ve disbanded they’ve reformed a couple of times to show the newer bands how it’s done live. I’m sure I’ve already put a number of suggestions in here for them so I won’t go over the full list, but I recently rediscovered a song of theirs that I’d forgotten about so I’ll throw that one in here just in case I missed it previously. It’s called The Right Time, a great rock song with lots of energy off their wickedly named Magnum Cum Louder album. Also worth noting that the bass player Rick Grossman (not to be confused with Les Grossman) was also the bass player for The Divinyls for many of their high success years and was also in Matt Finish (who I’ve recommended before for at least one, maybe two tracks).
Matt Finish, what a class act. I really only know the one album. From the first chords of look at Me , till riding the highhat on It Gets So, a great album. Short Note is a must, as is Layman's Day.

I was lucky enough to see them three or four times and their shows were always powerhouses. If you have heard their follow-up album Word Of Mouth you should check it out. And to see them live in studio check out their live video of Always Another. If you search for Matt Finish Live Always Another you’ll see a few choices. The one with 60k views is decent. None have perfect sound or video quality, but you can imagine what it would’ve been like. Matt’s voice was superb. Such a tragedy that he didn’t even reach 50yo.
excellent band! before the internet, there was only tv, radio, records, gigs and friends. if you didn't have any of those, life could be pretty bleak. i remember sitting with my boyfriend in his apartment. listening to gurus' ''stoneage romeos'' and ''mars needs guitars'' over and over again. it was the summer of 85/86...
So many great Aussie bands at that time. Midnight Oil were solid and kicked butt, Cold Chisel were intense, Hoodoo Gurus were groovy with a punch, INXS were pub rock with sex appeal, Painters & Dockers were hilarious, Hunters And Collectors were pub with funk and brass... the list just goes on... I'm German and only came to Aussieland at 15 and knew no word of English, but the Countdown kids and later the pubs kicked the living Deutschland out of me... I don't even have a trace of a German accent nowadays... My old friends in Germany don't even see me as one of them; but I rather the sweat and beer of the Aussie pubs than be something that my old friends are familiar with. The world DOES NOT know what Australia and Australians were about in the 80's
Very cool tune. There were a lot of tender-heartfelt songs coming from the Australian pubs in the 80's (''Throw Your Arms Around Me'', ''One Perfect Day'', this one).
First time I saw them on TV was when they did a set on The Don Lane Show. They were backing a singing dog, which did nothing but howl to the sound of music. It was a weird way for Australia to be introduced to Le Hoodoo Gurus, but that's the way it was in 1980/81. It took a few classics like ''Bittersweet'' to eclipse that bizarre ''singing dog'' introduction. I've always enjoyed this song, but I associate it too much with radio. ''Let's All Turn On''. Arthur'', ''Death Ship'' are other great numbers. Batty mentioned The Johnnys. Should try their classic ''Injun Joe''.
Loved them since Batty and I saw them at the Governors Pleasure out at The Rocks in Sydney. It would be groovy to see the original ''Leilani'' by Le Hoodoo Gurus. Batty and I are in the clip when we were much much younger.
I got to see them numerous times in Australia in the early to mid 80's, and was lucky to see them play a couple of shows in the States. Yep, the yanks did dig them. Cheers!!
Check out the Strokes… anything from the New Abnornal album. “The Adults are Talking” or “Bad Decisions” are recommended but all the songs are brilliant and somewhat more modern but with a throwback ‘80s feel (2020).

Saw them once play live in St.Kilda as back up to Midnight Oil. They were damn good that night. Really good guitar sound live. Funny you mention they from the 80's era but they always looked like they from the 60's the way they dressed, Never had any of their albums but not been many songs I heard from them that did not enjoy. Was at their 'Spit the Dummy Tour' concert at Selina's (Coogee Bay Hotel), from memory only a day or so after Michael Hutchence was found dead at the Intercontinental at Double Bay. Incredible live act.
That maybe their only song I never really loved which might not be their fault. Was watching cricket on channel 9 and for some reason they associated this music with Greg Matthews the cricketer and played it to highlight of him scoring a century in the mid 80's. But there was just something about Greg Matthews I did not warm to and this that song always reminds me of him. Funny thing a few years back I was in the city and went to the casino for a few hours to play Poker and unfortunately the table I was playing at had Greg Matthews playing. He was just annoying in person as he was on the tv. Sorry Hoodoo Gurus, but he killed that song for you with me, so I never really wanted to hear it after the first few times of hearing it.

I thought Brad Shepherd (crazy guitarist) was so hot when I was a teenager. I used to eye him while watching them play. The Gurus didn't have nice words about Countdown or the Countdown kids, which was silly because we did like them and we bought their records.
This isn't too bad. I've liked these guys since their first single ''Leilani''. I'm curious to know why you've never gotten back to Died Pretty with the late Ron S. Peno. Last year you did a tribute with one of Died Pretty's more palatable numbers, bu you haven't found your way to ''Stoneage Cinderella''.
It's an okay background song but the real shit is ''The Right Time'', ''What's My Scene'', ''Like Wow Wipe Out'', ''In The Wild'', ''In The Middle Of The Land'', ''I Want You Back''.. Yip, classic pub rock 🍺
Enjoyed the reaction guys, but I have to disagree on one point, Chris .. Lead singer, Dave Faulkner definitely did not have a "limited" vocal range .. He in fact had quite a good one, and lots of Hoodoo Gurus songs ( such as this ) have melodies that start quite low in pitch and finish way higher, usually involving key changes .. To me, he sounds great and quite comfortable up there.
If you're wanna go to the eighties...stroll the off beaten tracks: react to The Gun Club, the Del-Lords (RIP Scott Kempner), the Del-Fuegos...and the best rock'n'roll band from France: the Dogs !

We were having a big party in Australia in the 80's with bands like Hoodoo Gurus and the rest of the world was too busy watching Crocodile Dundee.

I loved Hummingbirds!!! I caught a few of their gigs in the late 80's.

Mental as anything is a seriously underrated Ozzie band. Berserk Warriors, Nips are getting bigger and Too many times are some of my faves.

The Hoodoos have been a pub rock staple here for years, and although they’ve disbanded they’ve reformed a couple of times to show the newer bands how it’s done live.
I’m sure I’ve already put a number of suggestions in here for them so I won’t go over the full list, but I recently rediscovered a song of theirs that I’d forgotten about so I’ll throw that one in here just in case I missed it previously.
It’s called The Right Time, a great rock song with lots of energy off their wickedly named Magnum Cum Louder album.
Also worth noting that the bass player Rick Grossman (not to be confused with Les Grossman) was also the bass player for The Divinyls for many of their high success years and was also in Matt Finish (who I’ve recommended before for at least one, maybe two tracks).
Matt Finish, what a class act. I really only know the one album. From the first chords of look at Me , till riding the highhat on It Gets So, a great album. Short Note is a must, as is Layman's Day.

If you haven’t heard their follow up album Word Of Mouth you should check it out. It captures a lot of their power in many of the tracks, and it’s just a step forward in songwriting and production.

Matt and the band were awesome live. I was lucky enough to see them three or four times and their shows were always powerhouses.
If you have heard their follow-up album Word Of Mouth you should check it out.
And to see them live in studio check out their live video of Always Another. If you search for Matt Finish Live Always Another you’ll see a few choices. The one with 60k views is decent. None have perfect sound or video quality, but you can imagine what it would’ve been like. Matt’s voice was superb.
Such a tragedy that he didn’t even reach 50yo.

excellent band! before the internet, there was only tv, radio, records, gigs and friends. if you didn't have any of those, life could be pretty bleak. i remember sitting with my boyfriend in his apartment. listening to gurus' ''stoneage romeos'' and ''mars needs guitars'' over and over again. it was the summer of 85/86...
So many great Aussie bands at that time. Midnight Oil were solid and kicked butt, Cold Chisel were intense, Hoodoo Gurus were groovy with a punch, INXS were pub rock with sex appeal, Painters & Dockers were hilarious, Hunters And Collectors were pub with funk and brass... the list just goes on...
I'm German and only came to Aussieland at 15 and knew no word of English, but the Countdown kids and later the pubs kicked the living Deutschland out of me... I don't even have a trace of a German accent nowadays... My old friends in Germany don't even see me as one of them; but I rather the sweat and beer of the Aussie pubs than be something that my old friends are familiar with. The world DOES NOT know what Australia and Australians were about in the 80's
Very cool tune. There were a lot of tender-heartfelt songs coming from the Australian pubs in the 80's (''Throw Your Arms Around Me'', ''One Perfect Day'', this one).
I can hear a little bit of the Stranglers in this song. A great sound.

Pretty sure Kate Pierson from the B52s did some backup singing on Bittersweet
First time I saw them on TV was when they did a set on The Don Lane Show. They were backing a singing dog, which did nothing but howl to the sound of music. It was a weird way for Australia to be introduced to Le Hoodoo Gurus, but that's the way it was in 1980/81. It took a few classics like ''Bittersweet'' to eclipse that bizarre ''singing dog'' introduction. I've always enjoyed this song, but I associate it too much with radio. ''Let's All Turn On''. Arthur'', ''Death Ship'' are other great numbers. Batty mentioned The Johnnys. Should try their classic ''Injun Joe''.
Ha, ha.. I remember that. They didn't look happy about it. They were also Simon Townshend's backing band.
Loved them since Batty and I saw them at the Governors Pleasure out at The Rocks in Sydney. It would be groovy to see the original ''Leilani'' by Le Hoodoo Gurus. Batty and I are in the clip when we were much much younger.
There's a few of us Yanks who really dug these guys too. Still sounds as fresh as they did some four decades ago. Great upload.

Check out the Strokes… anything from the New Abnornal album. “The Adults are Talking” or “Bad Decisions” are recommended but all the songs are brilliant and somewhat more modern but with a throwback ‘80s feel (2020).

He does alright on his own, but I only just realised, you could mash up Hoodoo Gurus and The B52s together. Backup from the 52s and lead vocals from Gurus. Lead is practically interchangeable. Surf's up!

Saw them once play live in St.Kilda as back up to Midnight Oil. They were damn good that night. Really good guitar sound live. Funny you mention they from the 80's era but they always looked like they from the 60's the way they dressed, Never had any of their albums but not been many songs I heard from them that did not enjoy.

Not musically where I was at at the time, but this is a catchy song with great production.
Was at their 'Spit the Dummy Tour' concert at Selina's (Coogee Bay Hotel), from memory only a day or so after Michael Hutchence was found dead at the Intercontinental at Double Bay.

I loved seeing these guys back in the 80's. You might like ''Like Wow, Wipe Out'' and ''What's My Scene''.
That maybe their only song I never really loved which might not be their fault. Was watching cricket on channel 9 and for some reason they associated this music with Greg Matthews the cricketer and played it to highlight of him scoring a century in the mid 80's. But there was just something about Greg Matthews I did not warm to and this that song always reminds me of him. Funny thing a few years back I was in the city and went to the casino for a few hours to play Poker and unfortunately the table I was playing at had Greg Matthews playing. He was just annoying in person as he was on the tv.
Sorry Hoodoo Gurus, but he killed that song for you with me, so I never really wanted to hear it after the first few times of hearing it.

I thought Brad Shepherd (crazy guitarist) was so hot when I was a teenager. I used to eye him while watching them play. The Gurus didn't have nice words about Countdown or the Countdown kids, which was silly because we did like them and we bought their records.

Last year you did a tribute with one of Died Pretty's more palatable numbers, bu you haven't found your way to ''Stoneage Cinderella''.

Enjoyed the reaction guys, but I have to disagree on one point, Chris .. Lead singer, Dave Faulkner definitely did not have a "limited" vocal range .. He in fact had quite a good one, and lots of Hoodoo Gurus songs ( such as this ) have melodies that start quite low in pitch and finish way higher, usually involving key changes .. To me, he sounds great and quite comfortable up there.
If you're wanna go to the eighties...stroll the off beaten tracks: react to The Gun Club, the Del-Lords (RIP Scott Kempner), the Del-Fuegos...and the best rock'n'roll band from France: the Dogs !
lol.. it was a little shocking when they released this.. especially after a couple of years of developing a reputation as a no holds barred rock 'n' roll band .. if bryan adams recorded this, it would be his best song.. lol
