Tried to watch it on the weekend, just couldn't get in to it now, miss the days of Commodores vs RX7 va Godzilla vs BMW vs Sierra vs Falcon vs,... Well, there's a long list of manufacturers who got told no when 'Supercars' became a thing.
Mark Larkham was an owner driver back in the 90's / 2000's, then when he retired from full time driving he was a team owner for a few years before selling his team and becoming an Expert commentator for the sport with Channel 7, Channel Ten ( when this video was made ) to now with Fox Sports, Larko is the perfect person for this role because of his Engineering/Driver/Team Owner past and with all of these things in his back pocket he can explain the details of a track and how to drive it or the car and all of it's parts and how they work in a way that Anyone can understand And that's why We All Love Larko + if you have watched the sport for a while he has really good humor as well
It's a public road that you can drive, at the speed limit of cause. The elevation from the bottom to the top of the circut is huge, at the top of the mountain on the way down you can't see the track through the corners, it's aim and point then in the dipper the front wheel is off the ground. It's an amazing track.
Yeah he had no business on pole the year he snagged it. Not in the car he had with the team budget he had As qualified as anyone as an owner driver who snagged pole at the big one.
Mr Mark Larkham (aka Larko) is VERY well respected within the Australian motorsport community, both those in racing, and the fans of racing, to the point that when the host broadcast announced they had dropped his segments from race coverage while they were making budget cuts, the outcry from the Fans and legends of the sport had him reinstated very very quickly. The broadcast faced backlash not only from the fans, but from the companies that support the racing, was enormous.
The car at roughly 6:40 was so damaged it couldn't be repaired and is currently on display at the National Motor Racing Museum near the final corner. The driver also sustained injuries and couldn't partake in the race, as it happened during qualifying.
Nothing beats actually driving around that place, if anyone is into motorsports I highly recommend going and seeing it. It’s actually a public road 90% of the year, my first reaction was “and they race around here😳” it’s so bloody steep…..
What Mark Larkham has just explained, is how to get around a lap of the Mount Panorama circuit; to complete this 1000 km race, you have to do 161 laps of the circuit. That means, you have repeat everything you do -- -- 161 times; that's why they use two drivers for each car, most other races in the Repco Supercars Championship Series are only 500 km.
Where only half way through the race now... Mark Larkham "Larko" (the narrator and racer of many of Bathurst). He KNOWS what he's talking about. All the races aren't like this.. but this is what CAN happen. The mental awareness of the drivers IS AMAZING! *hubby and I intend to be there 2025!
161 laps x 6.2 km (1000 km) race. THE GREAT RACE I've watched it from when I was about five or six years old 57 to 58 years. Australian institution. Here's a history. In 1966 19 of the first 20 cars over the line were Morris Mini Cooper S.
Great reaction. Lovely response to one of, if not THE, greatest races in existence. I'm from Belgium, been going to Francorchamps several times a year every year and I think that, besides the Nordschleife at the Nûrburgring, Francorchamps is the best track in the world. And, to contradict myself, there's nothing like Bathurst. Nothing. Forget Le Mans, forget the Indy 500 and forget Spa. Bathurst is where the real stuff is going down. Nothing like it and I'm glued to my computer screen every year to watch the race. Except, this year I bloody forgot all about it thanks to SpaceX having their fifth StarShip launch with a booster catch involved. Damn. But hey, thanks to RUclips I will be able to relive the moment. Thanks for the vid, lass. Warm greetings from Belgium.
I live about an hour's drive away from this track. Whenever I head over to Bathurst, I always do a lap of the circuit. When it's not a race day, it's a two-way public road. However, it is strictly speed-limited, as such. The most unnerving thing you can do is. drive around it in the opposite direction to the normal race event, It is a very steep climb to the top.
Come on down. It's a public road when they're not racing. I made a detour through Bathurst years ago and took the opportunity. Do not try for 300ks though! It's a 60km limit and several bits are scary enough at that speed. No way I would ever want to do it at racing speed. You really don't see how steep it is until you're there, either. That was quite a shock, even after hearing the commentators say it over and over when I'd watched the race. Even though I'm not the biggest fan of motor racing it was a hell of a thrill.
2 things: 1. The elevation changes 2. The blind corners going up and down the mountain Inline NASCAR there's no spotters in your ear. Just the chief engineer (or similar) - similar to F1. 2 drivers (2nd driver must do 1/3rd of the laps minimum). 6 pit stops minimum including 1 brake rotor change, some teams might do 2. BTW all the crashes in this video yet only 1 in today's race. Just a single safety car.
Thats Mark Larkham. Wasnt the most successful driver but a Rare owner Driver who managed to snag pole position at Bathurst. So the man is about as qualified as anyone to explain what it takes for a car to get around this track quickly.
his knowldge and passion comes across. he also has a great way of explaining in a way that ppl understand and get fired up. also watch josh jewells greatest race ever in moter sport. bathurst 2014.
Mark Larkham is an absolute legend and a true gentleman. For out and out history knowledge, however, I think Aaron Noonan may just outdo him. Larko definitely is the tech master, but god damn, Noons knows a load.
i DO hope you managed to catch the race yesterday, but if you didn't (or did! 😎), you should check out "The Greatest Motor race Ever", about the '14 race - you'll see it REALLY deserved that title - around a half hour long, it's full of drama and humour! [edit] i see you did, will check it out now before continuing 👍😎 BTW, if I recall correctly, that first crash and spin was the VERY FIRST corner of the race! Like the expression goes - "You can't win the race in the first corner, but you can certainly lose it" 😞
The Race is on now as I type this. 1000km (approx 621.5 miles) race, so yes about 6 hours, with all the drama of pit stops for fuel, driver change, brake pads - all planned plus of course those unplanned stops for repairs
Try walking up the esses. It's hard. It's so steep, it's a hill climb track going the other way some weekends. 60kph limit and even then you'll slow..slllowwwww right down for those dips in your road car. To think it started out as a dirt road.... It's the second best road circuit. The Green Hell is the best in the world.
I commented this on another reaction to this and I can’t think of a better comment: “if you get all that right, your reward is to do it 160 more times”
Mark Larkham is a former supercar driver & team owner. He knows what he's talking about. I had the privilege of driving the track back in the early 90s. It is very unforgiving. Go off line & your done.
It was run today. My family comes from Bathurst, i've driven the track but normally its a public road (with drains) speed limit 60km/hr and speed cameras for wannabees. In real life the hills are much steeper than in Latham's video. You seem to like your motor sport and you talk a bit like a sim racer. GT7 is a fair representation of the track without the G-forces with about the same lap times in a GT3. You should get yourself a good wheel and cockpit, and very good pedals and give the track a crack if you feel that way, there are other women in Britain doing the same and live streaming it. Live large and enjoy.
Mark Larkham expertly explains one lap of one of the most demanding race tracks in the world. Now just imagine how much physical and mental fitness you need to do that for 161 laps (6 hours).
You can drive this track, it's a public road. You wouldn't believe how steep and narrow it is, mostly a 60km/hr zone, i can't imagine how they go so fast with how little downforce these big, heavy cars have
Not sure what gaming system you use but if you want to play a racing simulation of Mount Panorama It's on PlayStation on Toca touring cars. Or Grand Turismo 6 and GRAN turismo Sport or GR 7
I first became aware of Bathurst through TOCA. Incredible track and the game had the 2005 season. Ambrose, Skaife, Kelly brothers, Ingall, Lowndes, a young Whinchup pre 888, a strong squad overall.
Bathurst is an amazing track, and an incredible event... But lets not overlook all the other tracks the Supercars race at. Im a big fan of the ( sadly disused now ) Phillip Island, and ( gladly used again ) Eastern Creek
2023 and 2024 were the most boring races I’ve seen in a long time. The problem now is that the cars are so good, 1000km isn’t an enduro anymore, it’s basically 6 x 28 lap sprints now, their only limit is the fuel burn. I think it needs to become a 12hr race to be honest.
Then an extra 160 laps just for fun 😂❤ The F1 drivers are scared shitless of this race track and refuse to race there. Not a real race car driver until they have done the Bathurst 1000. RIP Commodore and Falcon
I am 63 I have watched that race for 50 odd years and Mark Lathams description is the best of the race ever done.
I've watched this video many times and everytime I watch it, it is still intense. The producers deserve a lot of credit for the making of it.
me too john, I'm 65 but, Bathurst is the only race in Australia I give a toss about, I lost interest in every motor race since Brocky died
Larkham
Ive probably watched it for about 30 odd years... And I knew his name was Mark Larkham after 1 year.

Larko has certainly earned the right to explain that video, he’s put in enough laps around the mountain
Yeah he had no business on pole the year he snagged it. Not in the car he had with the team budget he had
As qualified as anyone as an owner driver who snagged pole at the big one.
Race starts in like 6 hours from now
And what a race it was! So fast this year.

This really is a all-time top tier racing video. Nobody ever dislikes it. Ever.

@magiclapras
"couldn't partake", it's Not a Tea Party...
Yes, Chaz Mostert was injured, and carried some injuries into the race a yr later.
You not only beat the mountain and the other drivers, you also have to watch out for the Australian wildlife as well.

Simply the best promotional video for any sport, ever.
You can get on the track. It’s actually a street circuit, only 60kph speed limit.

We went around it in a school bus in 1988. Ours was too slow to make it up mountain straight so we had to do the circuit backwards haha.
