- What Are You Really Made of? | A Monk's Perspective
One of the issues many people are struggling with now is the gap between their public persona versus how they actually feel on the inside. People will disguise or cover up with external things such as clothing, success, an identity, status, but if you were to assess yourself clearly, one's outside world may not be congruent with one's inside world. In this video, I give you an exercise to help you see yourself clearly and a 3 pillar system that can help you begin the process of change. I hope this helps. Enjoy! #monks #buddhism #mentalhealth

Fear. New responsible job. Scared of messing up.

Thank ypu Venerable. I'm a very westernized Buddhist. Listening to you reminds me the values of what i was raised with
You’re welcome ☺️
We love you Ven. Nick.. Believe in the process. 1. Reflect- Meditate -;Journal 2. Nurture yourself.

We like to watch your videos , that make people calm, and peaceful, thank you...
Thank you so much 😊
It's a life of self discovery for me, some people find it early some struggle, this life is learning. Shed the programming.
Yes definitely. It takes a lifetime 😊
7:23, You can't fake the funk, that's old school for sure brother Nick! 🙏🙏
😆 😆 haha! Definitely
Yeah express your true authentic self then people dont seem to appreciate it. I guess thats part of the spiritual path being yourself and not letting others pull you down
Even more important, we need to appreciate ourselves first 😊
What you say about we can end up tricking ourselves with the cover ups resonated so deeply with my younger self. We really have to return to our inner essence everyday to find our truth and our own source of unconditional joy. Thank you for sharing your old practice and your perspective
Wonderful Matt! Thank you as always. Hope you’re doing well 😊
Yes Matt, we certainly can fool ourselves- but, each day a new chapter
Beautifully said ❤️🙏😇
Thank you so much 😊
I’ve been dealing with anxiety my whole life. I recently became anxious and opened RUclips to distract myself. This video was recommended and I’m happy I watched. Im calm now and have some reflecting and homework to do. Thank you.
Welcome to the channel my friend 😊
Nick, I’m so grateful that you came up on my ‘suggested’ you make me feel so much better about myself just listening to your words. Bless you & thank you
Oh wonderful! Welcome to the channel 😊
It's true, you can't fake the funk! This is why self-care, self-love & self-acceptance are so important. 🪷 Thank you, Venerable Nick 🙏🏼🧡 Your words of wisdom have helped me tremendously to regain my strength, confidence, and happiness for life.
This is so powerful and authentic! I love the videos and it’s such an inspiration! I recently discovered buddhism because of this channel and I decided to take this path.
Thank you for everything you do! It truly makes a difference.
Aww thank you so much Michael and welcome to the channel 😊
Anumodana, thank you Bhante. May all living beings be happy and live happily. Sadhu, Sadhu, Sadhu.
This is a benefit of the internet. If somebody cares to learn and understand, they can find great teachers. It wasn't so easy pre 90s. Good story Nick. Strive ardently 😊
Thank you so much my friend :-)
Thank you Ven Nick. Will internalise and reflect. God bless you for sharing. 🌈❤️
Wonderful! Thank you so much tan 😊
Thank you nick, you’re really an inspiration! I can honestly say that your videos have changed my life. I couldn’t control my tears when you talked about temporary change vs real change, because it’s what I’ve been thinking about myself but never ever had the courage to admit to myself out loud. Thank you for changing my life. I now have the evidence & some form of courage to embark on the difficult but rewarding journey of “real change”.
Juice me at this present form , you get anger. The fact is having the wisdom and trying to guide my children and their response triggers anger. Otherwise I'm fine so I let them be for I know in time they will realize what I've been saying will be realized. Experience had been my teacher and it will be theirs. God bless you brother 😊
You have given me so much to work on with your videos...
Better than therapy!
I’m glad it’s helpful 😊
Bless you. I made efforts to change this week again. I am rereading Shambhala and other texts, I discovered Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche and his wisdom and insight has shown me a new way. Anger is wanting to make things better, it is basic goodness, etc. I believe I understand meditation now and have done so for an hour today and yesterday.
After my meditation yesterday I felt so deeply, I was sad for the pain of everyone. In Shambhala that day I read how that is a result of training and exposing ones heart. Much love and good health from just over a year long fan. You have helped me greatly.
Thank you so much my friend and please keep up your meditation practice 😊😊
Thank you Ven Nick.
You’re welcome ☺️
This is far, the best video that inspire me the most! Merci
Glad you enjoyed it Wesley 😊😊
Thank you so much. I just recently came across your channel. I am meditating now for four days and on a daily basis I try my best to add more water to my cup of salt. I watch one of your videos daily and I feel such a calmness and joy listening to you. Good that I came across this channel so late, that way I still have many more daily videos to watch! May you keep inspiring more and more people from over the world. ❤ Krista from The Netherlands.
It happened again. Nick, your videos often pop up at the exact time I need that particular message. I really needed this one on recognizing our essence today. Many thanks!
Oh beautiful Kathryn 😊😊 I’m glad it’s helpful!
Hey Nik I’m Shay just finding you n so glad I did n I just want to say I am in amazement at your honesty n integrity! You are so welcome Oliver 😊😊
As per the usual, leaving a like and putting it on my playlist right away. I'll get around to watching it eventually and I know it'll be worth it. Thank you!
Nick, I thank you for this video because I have been on an emotional rollercoaster trying to find my moral compass, and knowing that you as a learned Monk are also struggling with similar vices has given me renewed hope that I can also succeed in my fight to become a better person. I also thank you again for giving me the three pillars as a foundation to focus on.
How do I access and assess myself? I love this question. I access through mindfulness and meditation and self awareness. To assess through self observation and conscientious on thought, words, deeds and actions. Iv come to realise my valability, tendencies to relapse toward ego and selfishness while trying to maintain a degree of disapline and selflessness. Striking a balance of integrity and striving toward goodness and kindness is my aim. Failing daily but striving non the less. I gave given lengthy thought to your question Nick. Thank you for your wisdom and guidance. I'll persist in hope.🤲
Wonderful my friend 😊 keep up the great work!
Im so happy for you.. I've been also lost in the past but now Im on the path of improvement.

Cheers for your words of wisdom, Venerable Nick.

Hi, I am watching your videos from Costa Rica. I’ve started watching your videos around 2 months ago and I realized that this has been a life changing experience not only because I listen to you but also because I started applying your advice in my personal life. Greetings from Costa Rica and Colorado.
Thank you so much! 🙏🙏🧡🧡
You are so welcome 😊
Thank you rev. Nick for the reminders it gives me a boost every time I hear something from you even if it is a repetition .
You’re welcome Regina 😊
Your portion of covering up reminds me of the illustration that used when I was a caseworker at a youth development center: Failing to monitor ourselves is like failing to monitor the bathtub that we are filling to bathe in. Sooner or later, it's going to overflow because we are distracted by other things.
Thank you Nick for such a deep information.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much 😊
Ven Nick, thank you for this beautiful and inspiring talk. You have given me a lot to reflect upon 🙏🏻blessings

Referring to your feeling back in the pre-monk days, you are so totally different now, when i look at you i see peace, happiness, conficence and wisdom !
proof that the simple path brings the biggest joys in life
It is safe to go inward. Thank you for this wisdom Nick 🎁🌴
My pleasure! Thank you so much Sihle 😊
Thanks for addressing our basic needs and giving simple explanations. I struggle with my life-long conditioning, and I hold back from pursuing my ideals. I hope someday I will find myself in a place where I am happier with my outlook and move past my conditioning and on towards fulfillment of what I can be, someone who can be kind and peaceful and generous with acceptance
Just stopping by to remind you that you're doing amazing dharma work. Thank you so much for all you do.
Great video! And nice scenery :)
I enjoy these videos. Meditation is new to me but its so impactful. Thank you for providing a guiding hand.
My pleasure Jackie! Thank you so much and keep up your meditation practice 😊
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and journey with us. One of your past videos about overcoming low self worth was exceptionally helpful for me in being able to begin changing for the better. This is a very good video as well. Thank you c:

Wow Venerable Nick.. may I become just like you..☺️🙏🏻❤️🌿
😊😊
Thank you Nick. Once again, for passing on your LIGHT 👏
My pleasure! Thank you so much 😊
Such a beautiful story and love the play-doh idea to express feelings. I am a work in progress and I can see increments of change and will start to work with these Three Pillars as well as do the Homework ❤
Thankyou for sharing these wisdom Ven. Nick... I've been struggling to find the balance to discover what I truly want while handling an office job that seemingly makes me feel like I'm always Back to the Square One.
I realise that this is not the first time I heard these guidance from you, but at the same time, I keep forgetting how simple it is to steer myself little by little to the change that I really want, just like what you said time and time again.
Sincerely, I'm really grateful for what you're doing for the community, may we all discover our inner light, deepening wisdom, and live happily, Sadhu 🙏
Aww thank you so much my friend! I’m glad it’s helpful 😊
Dear Ven. Nick, thank you for posting these videos. They are thoughtful, useful, and often entertaining. I imagine that you were a very good therapist when you were working in Malibu. Your joy and peaceful nature come across even on RUclips. Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu!
Aww thank you so much Valerie! That’s very kind of you 😊
Truly scattering love, peace, joy, happiness to everyone. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much 😊
Thank you🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Your videos are very helpful and I am a work in progress to be a better version of myself. Thank you for sharing your practices and wisdom
You are so welcome! I’m glad it’s helpful 😊
You are not your thoughts, if you understand what is you and what is not you, mind will become still. Work on becoming the neutral watcher, where you can just neutrally see your thoughts and emotions without identifying yourself with them. After a while the mind becomes still and clear. When you feel this peace and joy, maybe for the first time or after many years of a blurred mind, you won't cling onto anything anymore. You will realise this is the best state of being. No money, no travels, no relationships, no cars, no houses, no food, nothing can match this state of being. Peace be with you 🌸
Thank you for your wisdom. I hope you can also cover more on the topic of forgiveness, specially if the people who abused you continue to abuse you up to the present. Your sharing of your knowledge about psychology, and the dharma is a great gift to us. Thank you, and may you continually be blessed.
Such a good one for me
Thank you for helping me become a better person. Love your laugh 😃
😆😆 thank you so much
I have been following you since last 3 months and I'm so thankful to God that I found you. Each day I'm becoming better version of my self.
Wonderful my friend! I’m glad it’s helpful. Keep up the great work 😊
Hola Nick! I am here in the park for a walk and just watch your video. I feel very moved by your words especially when you share your story.. I consider you one of my teachers and at the same time a brother and a friend that I am very grateful to have and to follow! If you juice me now, it will come peacefulness and happiness. Most of what you say I do practice and especially journaling has helped me a lot to clear my mind and my thoughts and I want to thank you for this!! I have understood that being in a spiritual path is a lonely path with many challenges but for me the rewards is being useful and help others as Dalai Lama says. Blessings to you, Master and all the sanga community 🙏❤️💜😊
Aww thank you so much my friend. Keep up the great work 😊😊
Thank you Ven Nick for such a profound video. Hope to meet you when I go to PaPae next. My stay there in January was very beneficial to me and I'd like to thank the monks and staff for making it such a retreat for all to enjoy and transform. Saddhu 🙏
Amazing and freedom
Thank you so much again for your inspiring video; personally I will integrate what is more missing to me that is meditation!
You're so welcome! 😊 thank you Luca
Excellent teaching. I know the primary thing that I need to work harder on and I will use the words of my therapist: Not allow others to transfer their unhappiness to me.
While, thankfully, it doesn't prompt me to say or do harmful things, I know that the negative energy is there after negative encounters. I must do better at curtailing the effect sooner.
Otherwise, the pillars for me are actually a lifestyle. And to think that I actually earn a living being a lifeline for some. What a tremendous blessing.🙏
Thank you.
You're welcome! 😊
Awesome content! I love meditation! Thanks for nice sharing! Have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you so much 😊
Thank You, Sadhu....
Wow so much wisdom, thank you so much for sharing this was really helpful and inspirational😊
You are so welcome! Glad it resonates with you 😊
I am so happy for you that you are of peace! And I am thankful for your inspiration… and your homework, I look forward to this enlightening process to be who I will become to my core. (Also.. I loved hearing the frog 🐸 this is becoming a sign as they are showing up in my life- now.. what does this sign mean?) thank you!
Excellent thanks a lot bless u too
Thank you so much 😊
Gratefulness, resilience, and love is me. 😌🙏🏻❤️
Nick, I'm struggling with depression and I'm also grieving. I feel alone. I have been studying, researching, and learning about Buddhism. I don't know anyone who is Buddhist and I do not have a single person as a friend who is studying and learning Buddhism or a single friend who is Buddhist. I really feel alone Nick.
Bodhichitta... in notions of love....a sea of merit...
Great topic, 🙏
Smoothie 🙄
I've been noticing great benefits from following these three pillars. However I must say I'm not always generous like giving money. Maybe its in smaller things towards family and friends. I just try to be genuinely helpful when someone calls for help. Also non-intoxicans is tough. Right now I havent had a beer since new years eve. Im feeling more energenic and have a better mood overall. I am worried about social activities in the near future where friends consume beers and such. It will feel I am the partypooper, but on the other hand I know where it can lead to eventually. Also I think I will miss the taste and feeling. Thanks for sharing this video, its another confirmation that I am on the right track.
Keep going. The no intoxicants is the most difficult one for me out of the three pillars mentioned. So I’m going to start there. I’ve done it before so I know I can do it again. You mentioning that you have more energy and a better mood gave me some motivation. Thank you for the reminder of why it’s important for me to put the beer down.
Thank you
