  • Thank you for watching
This video is a demonstration of one of the many capabilities of an fiber laser marking/engraving machine. The material being engraved is a sandstone rock. For those interested below i will include more details of the process.
The machine OMG-X 60W MOPA Fiber Laser (www.omglaser.com/)
Software used for the engraving is called Lightburn
I look forward to posting more projects, tutorials and information to assist others in the wonderful hobby which could also be a business of laser engraving.
I hope this helps those trying to do these cards and will get better at editing and find a better voice for the voiceovers i promise :)

I'm curious how long this job took to run. I'm relatively new at this but I setup something similar and the estimate was over 5 hours.

I'm new to fiber, so I didn't have much of a feel for how long things take but it sounds like the Lightburn estimate is way off. I think there is a way to calibrate the Lightburn estimates, so I'll look into that.
      Thanks for the info!

I think we have the same machine or very similar ... thanks for the video.
Are you sure you're configured correctly? I'd expect to see an available entry for q-pulse width, your MOPA should have it available ...
Check the Device settings -> Ports and laser settings and enable q-pulse width setting.
Nice work... love the concept... I'm in an area with lots of various types of rock... I can melt volcanic rock to produce glass that is black.
There isn't any great detail available in any of the rocks I've used, so I use a long lens. An F254mm (175x175mm coverage) has a depth of focus (dof) of about 4.8mm. If you focus to the center of that area, it will remain in focus for almost 5mm. The F420mm has a dof of about 13mm. Of course the tradeoff is detail and a bit of power, but a much greater range.
Not sure if I'm sold on the >256 pass option, but the jury is still out, at least with me..
I think if you're doing 3dslice you should use the 256 value for passes.
This is a post by Oz on the Lightburn forum on it's operation.
With 3D Slice, each pass is thresholded to the current threshold value, and the result is run as a 1-bit image. If you use 256 passes you get exactly one pass per gray-level in the image. Every pixel at or below brightness 255 for the first pass, every pixel at or below 254, then 253, and so on.
If you choose 128 passes, you get every pixel at or below 254 for the first pass, then 252, then …
It “clusters” the layers together into batches if you use fewer than 256 passes, and will duplicate some layers (with even spacing) if you use more than 256. 384 passes would duplicate every 2nd layer. 512 passes would duplicate every layer.

@@jackwilborn2353 this light burn is one not attached to my laser as was using it just to record in OBS, yes if LB is set up correctly you'll have pulse width too but as it used the default I just left it. It is very much trial and error and in the groups I've seen brass done with nearly 4000 layers. I would say it's a project for someone like Nicky Norton who will demonstrate the differences the amount of layers make. It's still very similar to how we used to do line intervals that coincide with the nema17 motor steps but even with a fiber laser we are still using the same DPI values. There are so many variables with the fiber galvo lasers that I tend to just go with what works for me. If someone posts improvements I will certainly try them out. My posts I'm uploading to give basics for others to try and experiment with as a lot of using these machines seems to be cloaked in secrecy and not sharing the settings used. I learnt all I know from the groups so these are to show my results and how I got em. I will give 256 a go though to see if there is any difference, also would make sense to try multiples of the 256 in order to get more defined edges. It's definitely something to ponder :)
