I hope they showed her a video of the children receiving those books and toys she gave away. I think it would have helped her to see that parting with those things have helped other people.
I think this would be a grand idea!... I own more then the "average" person does an I know this would help me to let some of my things go🖤... especially if it children.
I am a hoarder myself (less extreme than these people) and I found a way to throw away items Im emotionally attached to. I just take photos of the items, so I can remember them. I dont throw all the stuff out, but most (lets say 90%) I do.

This has been a help for me also. For instance I'm going thru my mother's things last few weeks . I took pic of a newspaper clippings she had and threw it away. It's not always the way to go but at least it's helped let some things go!!! It's a process. I believe best way to declutter is Stop bringing things in STOP completely That's first step. Then start letting things go !!! I started declutter 7 yrs ago . It's where all my energy is focused. I won't stop til I'm clutter free!!! It's getting easier. Check out Facebook groups for declutter groups. They can't be motivational talking with people and getting encouragement everyday. I'm doing a month Challenge right now .. Where u get rid of as many items as the day of the month. So day 1 One item day 2 Two items etc. For one Month. Today I'll find 18 items to get rid of !! No More Buys !! No More Buys !!!

Not a hoarder myself, so I assumed it might not be sufficient, but I thought what if instead of saving every drawing and toy from your kids (for example), to take pics, make digital scrapbook pages, and you can save a zillion on a few thumb drives (or online.). Interesting that you have done that.
Jo, you have no idea how much the kids who cant afford books and toys will love the items you donate. I've seen them receive donations like yours and their faces just light up. Most kids in extreme areas in the world and where I am in South Africa have never owned a book and even a magazine to them is an absolute joy!
I used to take my children every year, to the wishing tree. My children were incredibly lucky, and I wanted them to understand that other children are not as lucky, and don’t have parents who can buy them what they want at Christmas time. We would choose three wishes from disadvantaged children from the tree, and we’d buy them the toys they wanted. It taught my children, now grown men, to be empathetic, compassionate, and generous. I used to get immense joy from the wishing tree. I will do the same when I have grandchildren.

It's not odd, just seems so because this series combines hoarding and squalor as if they are the same thing or go hand in hand. The reality is hoarding does not mean you live in squalor, although most of the time it does.
I wouldnt be surprised if Allison has aspbergers. I have it myself and it seems like her special interest in ladybugs/ladybirds mixed with her feeling "too sensitive" could be a sign of her being on the specteum. Just something i noticed ^^
I 100% agree, I think too her excitement when talking about the ladybirds might be seen as manic but it doesn't look manic but very typical of spectrum excitement focussing. Sam has severe attachment and emotional maturity issues he needs help with too
No one wants to admit they are a hoarder or ever were... I lived in a home I bought with close to 4000 square feet. My home was spotless and had very few items per room in the first three years of living there. When my husband separated from me I started to collect things. After 23 years of collecting to the upper bedrooms and basement and doing this ‘shuffling’ they refer to, I decided one afternoon I was going to sell my house. Having Stelio’s around would have been an immense help!! My friends and family realized I had to do this all on my own. I got two HUMONGOUS garbage bins ( thirty feet long) and started to fill them for a week. The house was sold in a week. I took only ONE tiny moving van of items with me. I notice some of the people who have these hoarding issues have experienced a traumatic loss or are subconsciously reacting to something in their past. My husband put me through a 19 year separation. While we were together he HAD to control EVERY aspect of my life. I brought two expensive homes including cars and brought a good income into the marriage, but he would restrict me to have a few outfits and I could only spend fifteen dollars at any time on grocery shopping. There were repercussions if I did not do exactly what he demanded. Maybe my starting to collect things was a way I could feel free to do what I wanted for the first time because he had left. Once someone broke into my house during my collecting period. I think they had a shock of their lifetime. 😀 They had no possible way to uncover the few valuables because they were all hidden under things far off into far bedrooms. Being free of THINGS is freedom!!!! Your whole life changes. As this therapist says ‘ none of us are born hoarders. :)
I think your story reminds me of one woman on this show, who started hoarding food because she was in poverty when she was younger. Surrounding yourself with things so you know you have them.
I completely agree. Trauma we experienced or deprivation or even goodness… doting parents and relatives…all of these experiences are behind the compulsions. I did not have much growing up and now, though I do not need… I want. My house is not hoarded up, but little by little I see it has filled with things I have lavished on myself. If I am not for myself… who will be? Life is to fill the senses. To a point. And I think that is the message of the therapy. Leave space to free your mind.
This is so much better then the American shows like this.... I think it’s a lovely idea letting them talk and relax and think about what’s happened from a different place and with someone you can relate about it with. Well done
the helpers, the experts, the hoarders themselves are so much more positive in this show than the American one. The american show the hoarders lash out and abuse the people helping them so much more.

It seems like this show focuses on techniques to overcome the reason for hoarding, rather than relying on the participants to seek out aftercare to deal with their thought processes. With hoarding (and any compulsive behavior), it accumulates over time and needs time to undo.
As a former educator I can totally relate with the desire to collect and keep children’s books and educational resources. When I retired I donated my massive classroom library to the grammar school I was leaving and they were able to give every child in the school two books as a Christmas gift from me. This released me from the fear that those books would not be valued and I felt so much joy knowing that many children in the school would own their very own book, some of whom had never had one. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this lovely woman could visit empoverished children in her community and see how much joy she could bring them through donations of her wonderful resources.
My understanding is hoarding stems from anxiety, which is a result of depression. If Allison felt her father cared more about the insects in the lawn than he cared about her, it would be a root cause for her depression. She is trying to achieve her father's love and acceptance by "saving" all the lady bugs. Removing her hoard before she has addressed the root cause of her anxiety and depression won't stop her from hoarding.

We often see it but it's so overwhelming we just detach like you said. I'm currently going through my hoard I'm only 25 and seeing everyone on these shows I'm like "this is my future if I don't stop now" luckily it's mainly contained to my bedroom but it's so bad. I'm trying to keep up motivation by watching these
Being an ex partner to a hoarder who I was married to for over 40 years, I can understand how frustrating Sam is feeling over her hoarding; these people are so self centred and a nightmare to live them. In the end, I had to leave the relationship; Maybe he will have to do the same.
I can't imagine living in that type of environment, what it must do to your psyche. It must be real psychological torture, I wouldn't be surprised if people have ended up with C-PTSD from living with hoarders.
Oh I can't take it. My husband could be but I put my foot down. I am a minimalist and he is a hoarder. We had to come to an agreement, he can do whatever to his office and keep the door shut. NOTHING else.
@@ebrooks24711 agree. Relationships are a two way street. I am a hoarder while husband is a minimalist - probably the only thing we fight over. We meet in the middle - I regularly declutter and ensure the living areas are kept clear while he understands my attachment to certain items. Having a family now I’ve pretty much stopped bringing anything new in so gradually my belongs have decreased to boxes in the garage.
I know what it’s like to live with a hoarder . It’s so stressful, they don’t think about your concerns, not interested what the place looks like . Don’t care about your embarrassment. You can’t have your friends around , it was so bad when I was a kid I used to get out of the car not outside my house if I was given a lift home .
It's not that they don't care. 1. They don't "see" it. It all blends together for them. 2. They think other people are over reacting because to them, it's not a problem. 3. Is IS a mental illness but it's also an actual addiction. People can't just stop without real help. Not that I am excusing it at all! I just want to offer you hugs and 💕. With more shows about it, it will help more people. I hope things settle in your life. Just remember: YOU are not the reason and YOU ARE LOVED
@@amylee3531 I’ll take those hugs a kisses all day , thank you . It was actually my dad who had this problem . It wasn’t nice for my mother and that is putting it mildly. When she died it got a whole lot worse . I begged him to let me help him but it was impossible. Then 2and a half years ago he become ill and had to go to hospital . My sister phoned me and said dads in hospital , the house has got worse it’s not livable , shall I call in the professionals and get it cleared . She did .. tons of rubbish was thrown away , it had to be fumigated, even bit of furniture went in the skip as it was rotten. I flew back from Vietnam, left my family for 3 months to make the house livable again .there was rats living there , broken floorboards no heating no lighting upstairs. I slept on an air bed on the floor and could hear rats running around in garage underneath me. I got a couple of really good builders in to help me . We put a new roof on , new electrics , new plumbing, new kitchen, new bathrooms new floor , drop ceiling, it looked fantastic. It saved his life , you have never seen anything like the way he used to live ( unbelievable) his 96 years old going strong . Unfortunately I can’t get over to see him because of this virus but we speak regular on the phone . He was not pleased with my sister , but that’s another story . Take care much love 💕

Yeah that seems like something they should have explored with her. The idea of exclusivity seemed so important to her, enough for her to overspend to achieve that status.
Yeah I think there's a *wee bit* more going on in her head then OCD. I save insects too. I move them so they are safe and I don't collect them. I CERTAINLY don't buy every item of anything so others can't buy it. Very...odd. Allison doesn't want to be with her partner. I think she's built the ladyBUG wall up to barricade them from eachother.
She needs to learn to hate them. Japanese Lady beetles look a lot like them but are more orange, and will actually eat lady bugs. Maybe she could bring in some Japanese lady beetles and have them eat all the lady bugs. I think that is what happened here. I never see any native lady bugs, only the Japanese beetles. The native lady bugs ate only aphids. The Japanese beetles eat aphids, but they also ate all the lady bugs and will even bite people.
Children and teachers in low income and poverty areas and orphanages all over the world could benefit so much from your children toys and teaching items. It makes me sad for them and for Jo because of the absolute joy it would bring them and to her in the giving😢
My dad is a retired teacher. He has books from 40 years ago. All pooped on, peed on, chewed up...he still wants to keep them all. Teachers seem to have this problem more than others.
exactly like my father - he is a university lecturer, he kept outdated and irrelevant books and believed it might be useful 'someday'. He doesn't have the strength to take care all of it and just leave them piling... luckily during covid we managed to talk senses into him and got rid 60% of the books by donating and recycling the outdated ones. If you are reading this and share the same experience, my tip is that: be patient and go slowly. It's a process and not all casescan be solved overnight.

I have little sympathy for Sam. She's your girlfriend, not your mother, and it is HER. FREAKING. HOUSE. If you're that unhappy, get a flat of your own, don't storm around yelling and moping and accusing and crying and generally behaving like an overtired toddler. Believe me, I would not be able to deal with her house if I were him, either, but I wouldn't be using it as an excuse to not change my clothes for several weeks or even comb my hair. His hygiene is his responsibility alone.
Thousands of actual ladybugs in her house would quickly change her feelings towards them. Once they gain entry it is a nightmare. When they die they smell like rancid peanut butter. Not cute. 🚫🐞
If I was Alison’s boyfriend I would have just gotten my own place a long time ago. Hoarders and people with mental disorders in general, tend to be self-absorbed. It’s obvious that he’s frustrated and hurting so I wondered why he didn’t just get counseling for himself? I have many friends who are hoarders of all 5 stages. Trauma seems to be very common especially since we tell ourselves to chin up, carry on, which isn’t conducive to processing trauma throughout our nervous system.
This is the best hording series as they show that horders are victims as are those around them who need mental health help and understanding. But most of all the horders are ready to come on this show and get help, my family member would never even allow us to talk about it let alone seeing a therapist
They don't try to embarras them or shame them, they, know it's usually based in trauma and have a psych helping them first very gently. I love seeing how free and happy they are at the end
Yes there is lots of shame and therefore hiding. It would be so nice if people understand it's easy to get in a hoarder rut. And it would be great if we all take the shame out of it and not judge others but rather support them. I mean we really live busy lives a 30 or 40 hr plus work week barely leaves time for family much less friends and cleaning as it is. Even if your not a hoarder it's a struggle to keep everything together and keep up with the many of life's demands. And especially if you have kids forget about it. Then the time suck of modern life is even worse

I have noticed that Stelios always seems shocked when he first sees the hoarders’ homes. You would think he would not be surprised any longer since he works with hoarders.
It is a shock to any non-hoarding person. To the person who’s been hoarding for years it’s not a shock, it’s their normal everyday life. I think the hoarder needs to see how much of a shock it is when their therapist sees it, because it is so abnormal. Also, we don’t have smell-o-vision, so we are missing half of the shock when we watch it. I can’t even imagine what these places smell like, with rotting food, cat and dog urine and feces, rat and mouse droppings and urine, years of dust, dirty clothing, rotting floors and never an open window. Ugh.
These programs always make me cry at the end, as a realisation, how everyone just want to have a normal balanced life, and with the help of The amazing hero Stelios, anything is possible, hes such a kind hearted man, saying hello to the lady bird lady and the lovely taurus, and of course stelios, warmest regards, from Greece, Paros Island. ( And not forgetting those amazing women both of them who are such a joy to watch their love creating such beautiful spaces, The two blonde lovely ladies )
@@Koselill Don't know about that - i got the sense that Stelios gives these 6 weeks therapy as a one-off and you had to apply and be selected ( scholarship/ financial aid ?) Think after that it's hit or miss w/ national health care in UK
There are people who for one reason or another are turning to very small living spaces. Tiny homes or vans. They willingly sell or toss most of their belongings. They keep a few small items, some very easily stored clothes and the most minimal and useful kitchen tools. They have utterly gotten over "stuff". They don't want things. They live for experiences, relationships, the moment. Hoarding would puzzle them. Sam needs to man up and get his own place. Allison is killing him.
I live in a small hitch trailer but it’s not about stuff or having to much it’s the fact rent is way to expensive it’s constantly going up while pay around where I live sucks and renting your not getting any better your just putting money in someone else’s pocket my trailer I pay $330 in lot rent then $50 for bills I was paying triple that in rent and bills now I can actually save I don’t have a lot of room for stuff so helps me not need to spend a lot on extra but it’s really freeing that’s probably why a lot of ppl r choosing to buy campers or tiny homes or converting busses into homes it’s cheaper and with the way rent is going up everywhere and pay is still the same it’s not realistic to save for the future
I live with a mini hoarder of a brother who likes to hold all his trash upstairs in his room, as well as every plate and utensils he uses. He gets so angry whoever I tell him to throw his trash out or to wash his dishes. That and he’s got a nasty habit of digging in the trash to pull things out cause he finds them “still good to use.”
@@DancingDevil89 we’ve given him help, but he simply doesn’t want any of it and we’re kind of tired being his house maid making sure the place doesn’t turn into a trash heap like it was before I moved in with him.
Does he feel worthless? Keeping trash is sometimes a sign of not feeling worthy to be in a clean, safe space. Depression can also cause lax feelings about being clean. If he doesn’t want to be here, he may not see the point of throwing away trash. My brother has a brain injury, it makes him less caring of cleaning. I haven’t figured out how to help him, but understanding that his brain isn’t working typically, helps me to deal with his habits.
i think this guy Sam, has got childhood trauma. Bcuz of it he has grown into a man-child and a reason why he dating a lady who is so much older than him(older women tend to be able to takecare of you like a mother). All got to do with prolly him not getting a mother's love

It may seem like she is so much older, due to his lack of maturity. Definitely a man-child. I don't think she is that much older. She is 41. I doubt he is much younger than that.
Dang, I am sad that so many people are commenting about poor Sam. He obviously had his own illness. He couldn't help her through her illness and she couldn't help him through his. Separating was likely the best thing for both of them. BOTH of them, not just him. She was able to get her space more in order. We don't have the luxury of knowing how his healing journey continued. I know from experience that, sometimes, a person cannot heal if they're carrying someone else's emotional burden along with theirs. Here's to hoping both got more help and moved forward to a life worth living. Not just, "poor Sam."
I'm not really a hoarder nor a compulsive shopper, more of an impulsive shopper. I don't have patience to look for things, but when I see something, I go straight to the shop and just grab that one thing. When I'm busy, I almost have no desire to shop. During the pandemic I almost only shop online and I found a way to control my impulsive shopping. When I see something online, I let that item sit in the cart for a while, since it'll take time to be shipped to me anyways, there is no rush for me to have it in my hands, after a while when the urge to have the item subsided, then I'll just let it go.

37:00! That was a pretty epic moment! Girls look very similar and obviously work very similarly together. Them both leaning and grabbing the cups at the same time to dry and put away shows how synced they really are😊... almost like a ballet. Most people would have to practice that and they just did it...
I divorced one. When the one man said he didn’t even count in the hoarders world it took me back to one of the last fights I had with my ex. I told him I didn’t even make his top ten list. That all his stuff was first. Our house though, didn’t look hoarded because I simply bought plastic pins and put his stuff in in and took to the basement. He has been remarried and divorced twice more. Neither of the new wives ever lived with him. Hoarders rarely recover.
My friends wife moved out of their home because of hix hoarding, she couldn't take it anymore, she even attempted suicide a couple of times, she was so bad that she ended up in an institution then a halfway house, they found her one Saturday hanging in the basement, his hoarding got worse after her death, I've tried to help him but he can't part with his stuff, he hasn't even delt with her belongings since 2007 her clothes and everything remain untouched, hoarding affects everyone around you, they can see what you the hoarder can't.
I'm glad her friend , helpers , therapy , commiseration with someone going through similar situation and finally a timeline and ultimatum finally broke through Jo's stubbornness ! Sometimes you never know what will click and it takes a community effort !
0:40 omg that's me in reaction to my dad's hoarding :( even worse not a lot of people comprehend. Most even normalize this. It's so anxiety inducing even though you help them they get extremely aggressive towards their belonging and it hurts to feel how stuff might be more important to your parent than you. Learning to let go has helped but still had me with serious depression. Sending my heart out to whoever is passing through this as a family member. :(
I did also wonder about that. I wondered if maybe Jo was caring for her husband at home for a while (those 4 years) before he passed away and noone was able to visit. Otherwise, I'm also unsure what that all means.
This show is so much better than the American show Hoarders, the people actually seem to try to help the root cause of their hoarding instead of stressing that they have 3 days to clear the house out or else. And they're not as judgemental!
Alison, if you are reading this, you did EXACTLY the right thing by moving your boyfriend out during this process; it WAS all about you at this time. 🥰

They didn't care about each other but he had the "upper hand" to blame her for everything since she was hoarding, while his mental health is his problem, not her fault. Like in narcissistic relationships. People only see abused part screaming and crying, deeming them insane, but they don't see the silent abuse and triggers that narcissists uses to make the other part crazy in public to strip someone of credibility so continuing abuse will be easier.

Sam is awful and unsupportive, she needs help figuring out what to keep and what to get rid of, not be yelled at for something she’s obviously struggling with
On the other hand, they could have tried to get things tidied up hundreds of times but she started to faff about with the stuff instead of really sorting it and not getting anywhere?

She needs someone who can be patient with her, ask her how she’s feeling, why she’s feeling attachment to certain items, ask her what memories she has tied to them, help her take pictures of things so that she can have some record of them so she isn’t too scared of throwing them away, etc. these are actually helpful to someone who is struggling with this, yelling at them and blaming them is not, and will only make the problem worse

I used to be a hoarder when I was little, but not as extreme as the ones in the video. I'm still sort of a hoarder but try to be logical when it comes to keeping and throwing away stuff. I always ask myself "will I ever need/wear/use this?" if not then I throw it away. or another way is putting stuff in a box and if I don't use or need them for three-four months Im sure I won't ever need it so I can throw it away.
The best advice I have been given is that just because you love it doesn’t mean you have to buy it. I tell myself this everyday lol
I walk away if I’m not 💯 a day or two later I still want it then I know for sure I won’t regret it

Yes. Same with craft stores coupons. Friend told me just because you have a coupon doesn't mean you need to use it as an excuse to buy something.

Jo, you have no idea how much the kids who cant afford books and toys will love the items you donate. I've seen them receive donations like yours and their faces just light up. Most kids in extreme areas in the world and where I am in South Africa have never owned a book and even a magazine to them is an absolute joy!
This was a wonderful story and made so much sense as she truly cares for children’s education
I used to take my children every year, to the wishing tree. My children were incredibly lucky, and I wanted them to understand that other children are not as lucky, and don’t have parents who can buy them what they want at Christmas time. We would choose three wishes from disadvantaged children from the tree, and we’d buy them the toys they wanted. It taught my children, now grown men, to be empathetic, compassionate, and generous. I used to get immense joy from the wishing tree. I will do the same when I have grandchildren.

JO is a rare bird in that she hoards but also tries to keep things clean by vacuuming and dusting. Very interesting.

It's not odd, just seems so because this series combines hoarding and squalor as if they are the same thing or go hand in hand. The reality is hoarding does not mean you live in squalor, although most of the time it does.

I 100% agree, I think too her excitement when talking about the ladybirds might be seen as manic but it doesn't look manic but very typical of spectrum excitement focussing. Sam has severe attachment and emotional maturity issues he needs help with too

I lived in a home I bought with close to 4000 square feet. My home was spotless and had very few items per room in the first three years of living there.
When my husband separated from me I started to collect things. After 23 years of collecting to the upper bedrooms and basement and doing this ‘shuffling’ they refer to, I decided one afternoon I was going to sell my house.
Having Stelio’s around would have been an immense help!!
My friends and family realized I had to do this all on my own.
I got two HUMONGOUS garbage bins ( thirty feet long) and started to fill them for a week.
The house was sold in a week.
I took only ONE tiny moving van of items with me.
I notice some of the people who have these hoarding issues have experienced a traumatic loss or are subconsciously reacting to something in their past.
My husband put me through a 19 year separation. While we were together he HAD to control EVERY aspect of my life. I brought two expensive homes including cars and brought a good income into the marriage, but he would restrict me to have a few outfits and I could only spend fifteen dollars at any time on grocery shopping. There were repercussions if I did not do exactly what he demanded.
Maybe my starting to collect things was a way I could feel free to do what I wanted for the first time because he had left.
Once someone broke into my house during my collecting period. I think they had a shock of their lifetime. 😀
They had no possible way to uncover the few valuables because they were all hidden under things far off into far bedrooms.
Being free of THINGS is freedom!!!!

I think your story reminds me of one woman on this show, who started hoarding food because she was in poverty when she was younger. Surrounding yourself with things so you know you have them.
I completely agree. Trauma we experienced or deprivation or even goodness… doting parents and relatives…all of these experiences are behind the compulsions. I did not have much growing up and now, though I do not need… I want. My house is not hoarded up, but little by little I see it has filled with things I have lavished on myself. If I am not for myself… who will be? Life is to fill the senses. To a point. And I think that is the message of the therapy. Leave space to free your mind.

It seems like this show focuses on techniques to overcome the reason for hoarding, rather than relying on the participants to seek out aftercare to deal with their thought processes. With hoarding (and any compulsive behavior), it accumulates over time and needs time to undo.

As a former educator I can totally relate with the desire to collect and keep children’s books and educational resources. When I retired I donated my massive classroom library to the grammar school I was leaving and they were able to give every child in the school two books as a Christmas gift from me. This released me from the fear that those books would not be valued and I felt so much joy knowing that many children in the school would own their very own book, some of whom had never had one. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this lovely woman could visit empoverished children in her community and see how much joy she could bring them through donations of her wonderful resources.
Both these ladies looked so much less stressed and happier once their houses were cleaned. I hope they are able to keep it up.

My understanding is hoarding stems from anxiety, which is a result of depression. If Allison felt her father cared more about the insects in the lawn than he cared about her, it would be a root cause for her depression. She is trying to achieve her father's love and acceptance by "saving" all the lady bugs. Removing her hoard before she has addressed the root cause of her anxiety and depression won't stop her from hoarding.

We often see it but it's so overwhelming we just detach like you said. I'm currently going through my hoard I'm only 25 and seeing everyone on these shows I'm like "this is my future if I don't stop now" luckily it's mainly contained to my bedroom but it's so bad. Being an ex partner to a hoarder who I was married to for over 40 years, I can understand how frustrating Sam is feeling over her hoarding; these people are so self centred and a nightmare to live them. In the end, I had to leave the relationship; Maybe he will have to do the same.
I can't imagine living in that type of environment, what it must do to your psyche. It must be real psychological torture, I wouldn't be surprised if people have ended up with C-PTSD from living with hoarders.

Oh I can't take it. My husband could be but I put my foot down. I am a minimalist and he is a hoarder. We had to come to an agreement, he can do whatever to his office and keep the door shut. NOTHING else.
@@ebrooks24711 agree. Relationships are a two way street. I am a hoarder while husband is a minimalist - probably the only thing we fight over. We meet in the middle - I regularly declutter and ensure the living areas are kept clear while he understands my attachment to certain items. Having a family now I’ve pretty much stopped bringing anything new in so gradually my belongs have decreased to boxes in the garage.
I know what it’s like to live with a hoarder . It’s so stressful, they don’t think about your concerns, not interested what the place looks like . Don’t care about your embarrassment. You can’t have your friends around , it was so bad when I was a kid I used to get out of the car not outside my house if I was given a lift home .

It's not that they don't care. 1. They don't "see" it. It all blends together for them. 2. They think other people are over reacting because to them, it's not a problem. 3. Is IS a mental illness but it's also an actual addiction. People can't just stop without real help.
Not that I am excusing it at all! I just want to offer you hugs and 💕.
With more shows about it, it will help more people. I hope things settle in your life. Just remember: YOU are not the reason and YOU ARE LOVED

I’ll take those hugs a kisses all day , thank you . It was actually my dad who had this problem . It wasn’t nice for my mother and that is putting it mildly. When she died it got a whole lot worse . I begged him to let me help him but it was impossible. Then 2and a half years ago he become ill and had to go to hospital . My sister phoned me and said dads in hospital , the house has got worse it’s not livable , shall I call in the professionals and get it cleared . She did .. tons of rubbish was thrown away , it had to be fumigated, even bit of furniture went in the skip as it was rotten. I flew back from Vietnam, left my family for 3 months to make the house livable again .there was rats living there , broken floorboards no heating no lighting upstairs. I slept on an air bed on the floor and could hear rats running around in garage underneath me. I got a couple of really good builders in to help me . We put a new roof on , new electrics , new plumbing, new kitchen, new bathrooms new floor , drop ceiling, it looked fantastic. It saved his life , you have never seen anything like the way he used to live ( unbelievable) his 96 years old going strong . Unfortunately I can’t get over to see him because of this virus but we speak regular on the phone . He was not pleased with my sister , but that’s another story . Take care much love 💕

It kind of irritated me when Alison said she needed to buy all the ladybird bras so that no one else could have them.
Yeah that seems like something they should have explored with her. The idea of exclusivity seemed so important to her, enough for her to overspend to achieve that status.

I save insects too. I move them so they are safe and I don't collect them. I CERTAINLY don't buy every item of anything so others can't buy it. Very...odd.

She needs to learn to hate them. Japanese Lady beetles look a lot like them but are more orange, and will actually eat lady bugs. Maybe she could bring in some Japanese lady beetles and have them eat all the lady bugs. I think that is what happened here. I never see any native lady bugs, only the Japanese beetles. The native lady bugs ate only aphids. The Japanese beetles eat aphids, but they also ate all the lady bugs and will even bite people.
Children and teachers in low income and poverty areas and orphanages all over the world could benefit so much from your children toys and teaching items. It makes me sad for them and for Jo because of the absolute joy it would bring them and to her in the giving😢

My dad is a retired teacher. He has books from 40 years ago. All pooped on, peed on, chewed up...he still wants to keep them all. Teachers seem to have this problem more than others.

exactly like my father - he is a university lecturer, he kept outdated and irrelevant books and believed it might be useful 'someday'. He doesn't have the strength to take care all of it and just leave them piling... luckily during covid we managed to talk senses into him and got rid 60% of the books by donating and recycling the outdated ones. If you are reading this and share the same experience, my tip is that: be patient and go slowly. It's a process and not all casescan be solved overnight.

I have little sympathy for Sam. She's your girlfriend, not your mother, and it is HER. FREAKING. HOUSE. If you're that unhappy, get a flat of your own, don't storm around yelling and moping and accusing and crying and generally behaving like an overtired toddler. Believe me, I would not be able to deal with her house if I were him, either, but I wouldn't be using it as an excuse to not change my clothes for several weeks or even comb my hair. His hygiene is his responsibility alone.

If I was Alison’s boyfriend I would have just gotten my own place a long time ago. Hoarders and people with mental disorders in general, tend to be self-absorbed. It’s obvious that he’s frustrated and hurting so I wondered why he didn’t just get counseling for himself? I have many friends who are hoarders of all 5 stages. Trauma seems to be very common especially since we tell ourselves to chin up, carry on, which isn’t conducive to processing trauma throughout our nervous system.
This is the best hording series as they show that horders are victims as are those around them who need mental health help and understanding.
But most of all the horders are ready to come on this show and get help, my family member would never even allow us to talk about it let alone seeing a therapist
They don't try to embarras them or shame them, they, know it's usually based in trauma and have a psych helping them first very gently. I love seeing how free and happy they are at the end
Yes there is lots of shame and therefore hiding. It would be so nice if people understand it's easy to get in a hoarder rut. And it would be great if we all take the shame out of it and not judge others but rather support them. I mean we really live busy lives a 30 or 40 hr plus work week barely leaves time for family much less friends and cleaning as it is. Even if your not a hoarder it's a struggle to keep everything together and keep up with the many of life's demands. And especially if you have kids forget about it. Then the time suck of modern life is even worse

It is a shock to any non-hoarding person. To the person who’s been hoarding for years it’s not a shock, it’s their normal everyday life. I think the hoarder needs to see how much of a shock it is when their therapist sees it, because it is so abnormal. Also, we don’t have smell-o-vision, so we are missing half of the shock when we watch it. I can’t even imagine what these places smell like, with rotting food, cat and dog urine and feces, rat and mouse droppings and urine, years of dust, dirty clothing, rotting floors and never an open window. Ugh.
These programs always make me cry at the end, as a realisation, how everyone just want to have a normal balanced life, and with the help of The amazing hero Stelios, anything is possible, hes such a kind hearted man, saying hello to the lady bird lady and the lovely taurus, and of course stelios, warmest regards, from Greece, Paros Island. ( And not forgetting those amazing women both of them who are such a joy to watch their love creating such beautiful spaces, The two blonde lovely ladies )

Both women had such deep issues. I think six weeks of therapy is not enough. A year at least.
6 weeks is only to do the cleanup! The therapy never fully stops.

There are people who for one reason or another are turning to very small living spaces. Tiny homes or vans. They willingly sell or toss most of their belongings. They keep a few small items, some very easily stored clothes and the most minimal and useful kitchen tools. They have utterly gotten over "stuff". They don't want things. They live for experiences, relationships, the moment.
Hoarding would puzzle them.
Sam needs to man up and get his own place. Allison is killing him.

I live in a small hitch trailer but it’s not about stuff or having to much it’s the fact rent is way to expensive it’s constantly going up while pay around where I live sucks and renting your not getting any better your just putting money in someone else’s pocket my trailer I pay $330 in lot rent then $50 for bills I was paying triple that in rent and bills now I can actually save I don’t have a lot of room for stuff so helps me not need to spend a lot on extra but it’s really freeing that’s probably why a lot of ppl r choosing to buy campers or tiny homes or converting busses into homes it’s cheaper and with the way rent is going up everywhere and pay is still the same it’s not realistic to save for the future

I live with a mini hoarder of a brother who likes to hold all his trash upstairs in his room, as well as every plate and utensils he uses.
He gets so angry whoever I tell him to throw his trash out or to wash his dishes.
That and he’s got a nasty habit of digging in the trash to pull things out cause he finds them “still good to use.”
Poor guy, he needs help!

Does he feel worthless? Keeping trash is sometimes a sign of not feeling worthy to be in a clean, safe space. Depression can also cause lax feelings about being clean. If he doesn’t want to be here, he may not see the point of throwing away trash. My brother has a brain injury, it makes him less caring of cleaning. I haven’t figured out how to help him, but understanding that his brain isn’t working typically, helps me to deal with his habits.

Dang, I am sad that so many people are commenting about poor Sam. He obviously had his own illness. He couldn't help her through her illness and she couldn't help him through his. Separating was likely the best thing for both of them. BOTH of them, not just him. She was able to get her space more in order. We don't have the luxury of knowing how his healing journey continued.
I know from experience that, sometimes, a person cannot heal if they're carrying someone else's emotional burden along with theirs.
Here's to hoping both got more help and moved forward to a life worth living. Not just, "poor Sam."

I'm not really a hoarder nor a compulsive shopper, more of an impulsive shopper. I don't have patience to look for things, but when I see something, I go straight to the shop and just grab that one thing. When I'm busy, I almost have no desire to shop. During the pandemic I almost only shop online and I found a way to control my impulsive shopping. When I see something online, I let that item sit in the cart for a while, since it'll take time to be shipped to me anyways, there is no rush for me to have it in my hands, after a while when the urge to have the item subsided, then I'll just let it go.

Them both leaning and grabbing the cups at the same time to dry and put away shows how synced they really are😊... almost like a ballet. Most people would have to practice that and they just did it...
My husband is a hoarder, I ended up moving to my own house.
I divorced one. When the one man said he didn’t even count in the hoarders world it took me back to one of the last fights I had with my ex. I told him I didn’t even make his top ten list. That all his stuff was first. Our house though, didn’t look hoarded because I simply bought plastic pins and put his stuff in in and took to the basement. He has been remarried and divorced twice more. Neither of the new wives ever lived with him. Hoarders rarely recover.

My friends wife moved out of their home because of hix hoarding, she couldn't take it anymore, she even attempted suicide a couple of times, she was so bad that she ended up in an institution then a halfway house, they found her one Saturday hanging in the basement, his hoarding got worse after her death, I've tried to help him but he can't part with his stuff, he hasn't even delt with her belongings since 2007 her clothes and everything remain untouched, hoarding affects everyone around you, they can see what you the hoarder can't.

I'm glad her friend , helpers , therapy , commiseration with someone going through similar situation and finally a timeline and ultimatum finally broke through Jo's stubbornness ! Sometimes you never know what will click and it takes a community effort !

0:40 omg that's me in reaction to my dad's hoarding :( even worse not a lot of people comprehend. Most even normalize this. It's so anxiety inducing even though you help them they get extremely aggressive towards their belonging and it hurts to feel how stuff might be more important to your parent than you. Learning to let go has helped but still had me with serious depression. Sending my heart out to whoever is passing through this as a family member. :(

This show is so much better than the American show Hoarders, the people actually seem to try to help the root cause of their hoarding instead of stressing that they have 3 days to clear the house out or else. And they're not as judgemental!

They didn't care about each other but he had the "upper hand" to blame her for everything since she was hoarding, while his mental health is his problem, not her fault. Like in narcissistic relationships. People only see abused part screaming and crying, deeming them insane, but they don't see the silent abuse and triggers that narcissists uses to make the other part crazy in public to strip someone of credibility so continuing abuse will be easier.

She needs someone who can be patient with her, ask her how she’s feeling, why she’s feeling attachment to certain items, ask her what memories she has tied to them, help her take pictures of things so that she can have some record of them so she isn’t too scared of throwing them away, etc. these are actually helpful to someone who is struggling with this, yelling at them and blaming them is not, and will only make the problem worse

I used to be a hoarder when I was little, but not as extreme as the ones in the video. I'm still sort of a hoarder but try to be logical when it comes to keeping and throwing away stuff. I always ask myself "will I ever need/wear/use this?" if not then I throw it away. or another way is putting stuff in a box and if I don't use or need them for three-four months Im sure I won't ever need it so I can throw it away.
