I feel like it should be free, I used to play in CS 1.6 ZP servers and the community always had a Mapping Competition. Winner usually got a copy of the game if they didn't own it and admin privileges. It encourages creativity and you pick up some useful skills too.
I work for a developer of a free2play and we also lock our map editor behind a paywall. If you've made a purchase before, you can use the editor and play your maps in single player. If you bought our standard "skip the grind" bundle, you get to publish your maps for everyone to use in multiplayer. Making an editor is a lot of work, and even more if you want it to be easy to use. I don't blame Valve for keeping the price tag on the editor.
I mean I remember making Quake maps and Doom maps using free tools, and wolfenstein enemy territory maps using Radiant. Back when CSGO was buy to play, I guess it made sense to bundle them together, since you needed to own the game to really make use of the tools, but it does seem a little weird they would restrict it now, especially if the wall doesn't even stop bots from ruining things for everybody. If enough people pushed for it, Valve might end up relenting. Probably a non issue these days when you can access powerful game engines for free and do infinitely more without suffering through late 90s UI.
So rather than creating a barrier for spambots, they create a barrier that kept games alive literally decades after their official deaths? Great work Valve. That tool was a huge gateway to people getting into 3D and game design.
I got my Premium account as a present from a random guy in Steam. I just asked the community if i needed it for mapping and when they said "yes",so one of the guys that awsered me friended me and bought me a premium subscription, bruh.

As a long time Hammer user myself, & someone who isnt super into counterstrike, I knew about this from the day it went free to play. Fortunately, you can get someone to send you the files for the editor & it will work just fine. I did this within the week of it being F2P, as i assumed Valve had made a simple mistake & would unlock it for everyone later. Strange that they never did.
Yeah, I once thought of making maps for CSGO after seeing your tutorials, but then after I saw that the hammer editor wasn't there, my will to make maps for it just disappeared, like some pair of gauntlets on a mountain. Oh and also the prime status here is 50 BRL so no way I'm gonna spend it all for an editor.
I mean idk, there are quite a few games that cost 40-60$ on steam I wouldn't exactly call it "a cheap game on sale", but it is _relatively_ cheap compared to those other games.
I remember being in this exact circumstance because I joined Steam when Portal 2 was announced, and Valve was giving Portal 1 away for free to promote it. I *thought* I'd be granted the SDK for free as well, but the fact that the game was free barred me from this. I ended up spending hours on Portal 1 just ent_create ing the HL2 NPCs and Impulse 101-ing my way to weapons. Portal 1 was my Garry's Mod for years, it's funny to think back on. But back on topic, I think it is *incredibly* reasonable that for a private company like Valve with so many secrets that they ask for just $15 US in order to use their tried and tested tools. You can blow $250 USD on some lesser-known proprietary 3D game-making software on Steam or spend an hour's pay (except food service workers who deserve non-tip-dependent wages) on a handy level editor.
Also, I believe in open source software. I think proprietary stuff is dumb and just divides efforts. Open source software like Godot Engine and GB Studio are really their own league of programs. To me, Valve doesn't sound interested in changing their methodology at all if they're still asking gamedevs to pay up for a licence to sell an original game on the Source engine. Part of me wonders if all things Source 1 will become free-r as it becomes a tool of history rather than for active development. It feels like this state of "paying for the level editor" is a concequence of Half Life: Alyx and the associated official Source 2 release taking so damn long.
I'm not sure why they don't just lock off the workshop uploader instead. That seems like it'd make a lot more sense, considering you aren't gonna be publishing a whole lot with no editor anyway, and people would probably be more willing to pay up to publish their creations if they already had creations to publish.
2:54 I found myself hoarding a bunch of Vega GPUs that I never even used once, for several months now. And I bought that pile of hardware with my own pocket change!
Solution: make the software free, but limit uploads to the workshop to free accounts. That way you don’t restrict somebody’s potential creativity, but you also counter the bot problem
Yeah, nothing is stopping F2P bots from spamming the workshop with pre-made map files. I don't see why the mapping tools couldn't be made free, but the publishing stay limited to Prime.
I never bought CS:GO but got prime through leveling up. I've thought of mapping for a while and made some maps for source but now I think I'll finally buy the map editor for CS:GO. Great video!
You guys argue whether a 15$ dollar tool should be free, while in the previous video comment section everyone was willing to pay 650-1000$ for VR just to play half life alyx.
Breaking News: Gamers aren't one monolithic entity, but actually a group made up of a lot of individuals, some of whom are willing to pay up to a thousand dollars for VR while others don't.
@@TheHeavyshadow That's not the point. It's just a flaw he pointed out. $15 is definitely not that much for a game you'll get thousands of hours out of like I have. Save a dollar for 15 days and buy it, what's so hard about that?
@@PS2Damon That's very much the point Nick was making. I agree with the "15$ isn't much"-part, but "you guys" and "everyone" is precisely the "Everyone inside [subgroup] acts the same"-argument that is very common especially in gaming circles. The thing in my opinion on not making the software for free is that there's people who just want to try it. I own many source games, so I don't have this issue. Although, I did want to try to use Hammer, but I don't find that kind of thing fun. There's probably people out there that want to try it, but scared of wasting $15 on something they wont use. Also, support Free Software www.fsf.org
I know this comment is not about SDK at all, but I think Valve should make people bind their phone numbers to the accounts in order to get prime after reaching lvl 21, like it used to be first days after cs gone free-to-play.
I just got into gmod mapping yesterday because I want to use it to do UX tests at a distance with the quarantine and stuff. I actually used one of your 2012 hammer tutorials on loading in custom models for this.
I already have Prime by reaching level 21 a while ago, and the day I posted this comment, my dumbass decided to take the risk to buy the Prime Status upgrade just to see if I can actually get the Kit. And I do! Sucks that it isn't free, but Valve should really have a description about that in the game.
If the SDK is gonna be free, why even buy csgo? You can even get prime for free, which i think was a stupid idea. Anyways great video as always Phillip :)
You can get prime "for free" with a LOT of time invested. You have to invest way more time to get prime "for free" than you would to have to for earning 15 dollars. Go blood donating or make some stupid online survey. Takes a lot less time to get prime.
i thought 3kliks d talk about the broken low shaders after 27/3 update and the recent market bug where models where expensive as hell (the 2nd thing at least was just fixed)
Gonna have to disagree with you on this one Phillip. Sure, it's Valve's right to charge for modding tools. They can charge for whatever they want. That doesn't make it a good business decision, or good for the players. The added value, both it terms of dollars and fun that mods add to a game vastly outweighs the pocket change they're getting out of this. I've never paid for modding tools and I never will. You can call that entitlement if you want, but it doesn't change the result, less fun mods.
I leveled up to prime in csgo, all i need to do is buy the game with “prime status” and it will come, with source sdk? How can i get the sdk with a leveled up account
Loading up my first completed map and seeing the bot's play on it was one of the most magical moments I ever had in gameing. If you own the game, just try making a map. it doesn't need to be good. It doesn't even need to be balanced. Map making has teached me a lot things, and playing on a map I made, with friends has been some of the most fun I ever had with cs:go. If you have any interest in mapping go for it, it's so much fun. It might be hard in the beginning but once you figure stuff out it's great. (Philip has made great tutorials for this on his channel. I highly recommend you check them out.) And Philip if you see this, thank you so much for what you have introduced me to. (And sorry for any typos in this. I wrote this at 4 a.m. in the morning because I woke up too early.)
Well that stinks. I was trying to rank up to rank 21 (currently 14) so that I would be able to get the version of hammer editor so that I can back port, but welp......
I wanna thank 3kliksphilip for having so many amazing tutorials I used to teach myself map creation using the source engine. If you are interested in map/world creation, I highly suggest his videos as well as starting with a game you know, like csgo. Thanks 3kliks!!!
But Valve didn't exactly make Hammer. Hammer is just a *very* improved version of ID Software's WorldCraft editor for Quake. Yes, it *is* more Valve than ID now, but it still feels wrong that they would sell copies of Hammer regardless. I mean, did ID Software ever expect this when they sold Valve a Quake engine license? I don't think so. They expected that Valve would extend the engine and editor, make and sell games with them, and license out the extended engine to other developers. They probably didn't expect that Valve would then sell access to the editor. It's not even like this is the only way to access Hammer. (Almost) Every other Source game comes with Hammer. It's just the one with a few CS:GO-related files that costs money.
Maybe it is to protect mapping communitys from too many new players, who can often be impatient and resistent to feedback... But then again, we have all been at that stage
You should ask one of your friends that has bought CS:GO for "steam family sharing" and you can play every game/app that he has including SDK. And if you have level 0 on Steam you can send your files (after you finished the map) to your friend. So he can publish it.
Same with me :( And I nealy had no reason to buy it because I already reached rank 21 and got the prime and also, because of the inflation in my country, when CSGO went free, its price had risen up. (Went from 25 to 77 in our currency) And it doesn't change with Steam Sales too, unfortunately.
There are a lot of people that just want to try it. They don't want to buy something that they might never use. Tf2 SDK went free when th game did so why not csgo
Keep in mind that the Source SDK (for CS:GO) is still proprietary software and it likely has other reasons not to include as part of free installations of CS:GO. It's important to note that different versions of the Source SDK, while they do share some, have different license agreements and ToS depending on the distribution. The game and SDK are separate products, and Valve has chosen to give you tools for authoring custom content for the game if you decide to pay for the main product. I think that is perfectly fine. That is just my opinion, would love to hear yours!
I think that the SDK itself should come with the game free but the workshop_publish command should be restricted to prime users. That way the workshop will not be flooded with bad submissions from bots and “casuals”. Anyone who is serious enough about the game to make proper maps fot everyone to play should buy prime.
Honestly I would have payed 20 dollars extra for the CSGO or HL2 SDK. Playing something you created and having the amazing feeling when it is fun is not something I could put a price on.
It surprises me that the game would be made free to open it up to a larger crowd but the platform to allow people to create for the game is not, I figured they would leave all avenues open to make players more susceptible to being enthralled and less likely to depart from the game.
Honestly i think they should just make it free since bots can exploit the borrow feature, making the price more useless than before. They could at the very least give you it when you reach rank 21 and unlock prime!
This is a very interesting topic. On one hand, free players are declined access, on the other hand Valve isn't making money from CS:GO purchases anymore. I'd imagine it's just a way for Valve to make money. I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like.
This video was roller coaster of emotions. At first, I thought I was locked out map making because I'm F2P. And then horror when I realized I had to spend more money to just use this feature after buying prime months ago! Then I realized prime is "buying the game".
In my opinion I think the reason is to keep a value in the premium version. Because some people won't buy it, just because they realize they'll get the bonus of having it for free anyways, so including the source sdk in the free version would make buying prime worthless.
Csgo is 15$ when you factor in RPG maker is really expensive and less powerful that isn't a lot. If you can't save up for it, you clearly don't have the patience for source sdk. Which is one of the hardest game engines for mapping, and the hardest to get recognition for.
What's odd is that I could swear that a version of the Source SDK (albeit an earlier one) comes with Team Fortress 2. I don't see what makes CS:GO different
CS:GO has a newer version of Source, which has higher limits than TF2's, and the map compilers are newer too. So using an older Source game's mapping tools kinda restricts what you can do.
I personally think Valve can just release the SDK tools as some sort of DLC for maybe 5 dollars instead of not saying that by buying prime you can also obtain the tool. Its also weird how they think TF2 is okay with free SDK, but not CSGO.
Philip, there’s now a new update in CS:GO, and it released a new case (Prisma 2) my attention got particularly driven to a particular skin from that case... The skin that caught my attention is the AWP Capillary, it’s from the same collection from the MP9 and Five-Seven capillary (being the capillary collection) and the thing that caught my attention of this skin from the capillary collection, is they added a new feature onto it. The new feature added is that now the butt and barrel of the weapon have a human cell look, and have randomized patterns, what do you think about it?

@@Do_Not_Lie A 2 year old comment and you reply with the worst reply ever, damn you heathen, DAMN YOU
I definitely didnt have my friend give me his and just edited all the config files to match my directories
hello lovely dear friend, would you care sharing the editor with me( ͡°з ͡°)
send.firefox.com works great ;)
I feel like it should be free, I used to play in CS 1.6 ZP servers and the community always had a Mapping Competition.
The venn diagram of (people into mapping) and (people who cannot afford $15) is very very tiny anyways.
"Feel entitled to free software" Richard Stallman would like to have a word with you
Stallman stands for software freedom, not necessarily free-to-use software
Been thinking about making maps and then trying to work it out today with your old video.... to then see you just uploaded this! thank you so much!!
now trying it its not working... it says launching then stops. i got the game 5yrs ago so its prime

In Vietnam, $15 for Prime is about 345000 VND, that's a price equal to a mid-tier gaming mouse
holy crap
Tf2's hammer and such is free to use though.
2:00 $15 is the price of a cheap game on a steam sale? Well. I wouldn't call $15 cheap for a game, especially one that is on sale.
I mean idk, there are quite a few games that cost 40-60$ on steam
I wouldn't exactly call it "a cheap game on sale", but it is _relatively_ cheap compared to those other games.
@@DaniPaunov sure, relatively. But I'd never buy a game that costs more than $20 to start with.
@@MightyElemental then that's just you being a cheapo
I made a post about this a while ago in the 3kliksphilip subreddit glad to see that he is touching on it now
I remember being in this exact circumstance because I joined Steam when Portal 2 was announced, and Valve was giving Portal 1 away for free to promote it.
I just can’t wait until csgo gets ported to source2 and I can get my hands on that sweet new hammer editor.
Oh wel..
For a video from lovely Philip it is worth sacrificing 3 minutes and 41 seconds of sleep.
2:54 I found myself hoarding a bunch of Vega GPUs that I never even used once, for several months now. And I bought that pile of hardware with my own pocket change!
Maybe try getting a refund. That money could go towards something useful. (Like bills)
$15 is the first price you pay. The second is your soul using that damn thing.

I disagree making it f2p was a great idea. Keeping ssdk p2u is a crime!
I know this comment is not about SDK at all, but I think Valve should make people bind their phone numbers to the accounts in order to get prime after reaching lvl 21, like it used to be first days after cs gone free-to-play.

@@ferdinandhansel3248 I understand you view, but I still think that prime should be paid only.

You can call that entitlement if you want, but it doesn't change the result, less fun mods.
i think that there should be a free verison, but for those that use the free version, valve has to manually allow them to post their maps
Sounds like Valve could do with some one like you to help them to overcome these challenges!

And Philip if you see this, thank you so much for what you have introduced me to.
This actually really bothers me, I tried to start mapping but I couldn't because I had to buy prime
same :,(
You should ask one of your friends that has bought CS:GO for "steam family sharing" and you can play every game/app that he has including SDK.
My problem is that I got prime by playing the game, so I cant even buy the SDK now
@@Nol41 You can buy prime status upgrade even though you're prime.
Considering the state of everything I really don't have 15€ to spare, but making maps always seemed fun, gonna fuck around with it as I can

I love you dude
Imagine being so entitled you think Valve owes it to you to give you something for free.
There are a lot of people that just want to try it. They don't want to buy something that they might never use. Tf2 SDK went free when th game did so why not csgo
Stairway to heaven? Really ? The Best reference you have ever did

1:35 guys, call me nuts but this might be a sign that 2kliksphilip is actually 3kliksphilip
I emailed valve about this a few weeks ago, was verysad to hear it wasnt included in the free liscence.
Same, I'm not paying 12 euros just for a map editor and was super pissed cause I grinded to rank 21 to make maps for csgo but sadly couldn't
I think that the SDK itself should come with the game free but the workshop_publish command should be restricted to prime users. That way the workshop will not be flooded with bad submissions from bots and “casuals”. Anyone who is serious enough about the game to make proper maps fot everyone to play should buy prime.
It’s bizarre, especially considering that Team Fortress 2 is free to play, and still comes with the hammer editor, just with the tf2 tools.
the throwbacks in this video were a great touch
Honestly I would have payed 20 dollars extra for the CSGO or HL2 SDK. Playing something you created and having the amazing feeling when it is fun is not something I could put a price on.
It surprises me that the game would be made free to open it up to a larger crowd but the platform to allow people to create for the game is not, I figured they would leave all avenues open to make players more susceptible to being enthralled and less likely to depart from the game.
Did not expect to see Elite Dangerous footage in this video. More a still frame but even so.
I wouldn't even be upset if they discounted the prime membership during things like the summer sale
Honestly i think they should just make it free since bots can exploit the borrow feature, making the price more useless than before. They could at the very least give you it when you reach rank 21 and unlock prime!
I'm actually so happy I bought the game beforehand now.
This is a very interesting topic. On one hand, free players are declined access, on the other hand Valve isn't making money from CS:GO purchases anymore.
I'd imagine it's just a way for Valve to make money. I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like.
You can also get the sdk from css, I accidentally got the sdk when buying source for gmod textures
I thought this video would be about some worker's right issue. My disappointment will be irrebelerailable next time Mr. Click.
So that's what happened after that cut in 'How will he die' episode
It makes sense. Prime is like £11 which kinda is a lot for a 9 YEAR OLD game. But with and SDK with it, it starts to make the £11 worth it.
This video was roller coaster of emotions. At first, I thought I was locked out map making because I'm F2P. And then horror when I realized I had to spend more money to just use this feature after buying prime months ago! Then I realized prime is "buying the game".
1:56 SWAT4 sound effect

In my opinion I think the reason is to keep a value in the premium version. Because some people won't buy it, just because they realize they'll get the bonus of having it for free anyways, so including the source sdk in the free version would make buying prime worthless.
Csgo is 15$ when you factor in RPG maker is really expensive and less powerful that isn't a lot. If you can't save up for it, you clearly don't have the patience for source sdk. Which is one of the hardest game engines for mapping, and the hardest to get recognition for.
It's worth buying, although I think Valve could offer it as a separate piece at a reduced price - maybe £5.99 or something like that.
Great video bro!!
Your map making tutorials are great! I might have another go, now that I have plenty of time in isolation
"There´s a great map in all of us" such a lovely guy
If you can't afford a $15 dollar map editor as an adult, you should probably be using that time to get some money instead of making CSGO maps.
EVERYONE:
Has bought SDK for this entire time and paid the $15
Everyone after CS:GO goes free:
"Why do I have to pay $15 for $15 worth of content?"
