Rogue 3+ wood at 13.5° and a Rogue 4 wood at 17°. This video should help me be able to hit both clubs from the ground rather than just the 4 wood. Thanks Rick !
This is about the 5th rick shiels video about "smashing 3 wood" I've seen and yet I'm still topping it 100 yards along the ground. Stupid game, why do I love it
Wow watched this video. Went to the range the next day and had instant success. 3 wood carries 215 straight 5 wood reaches 215 Hybrid 5 goes 190-200 All reasonably straight! Incredible I would leave these clubs at home and just hit 4 irons it got so bad! Furthermore... I need two mini steps back with my right foot. So 1 step I get a nice fade... 3 steps nice little draw. 6 mins and Rick cured my life long woods woes :-)
Love the videos Rick. Keep them coming. I've really got into golf over the last 6 months and your channel has become my favourite. I've dropped over 20 shots over 18 holes and on the weekend I cracked under 100 shooting a 95 on a par 68 course. Keep up the good work.
I went from 120’s to 90’s thanks to Rick. His tips on how to grip club, hand placement, stance, ball placement, everything… makes it so simple. Some of these guys are too complicated he makes it easy to understand
Am 62 playing off 21.9 HI in Winter League.Just completed my 4th Round with the Wilson Launchpad 3 wood in the bag.I was OK with my old 3 wood but with the Launchpad I was putting the ball too far forward in my stance as you say in the video. After watching the video and moving it back,I hit it much better on Saturday. The Wilson Launchpad Driver and 3 wood have really helped me.I am looking forward to using them next year in summer conditions which I haven't done yet. Richard
I’m a new golfer who started a year ago (for my birthday I got a starter set of clubs-Wilson Ultra)Just recently I got a new ,custom made, set of TaylorMade Sim Max irons. I am still looking to get some different woods and a driver. Currently I still have my starter 3 Wood.
Rick I appreciate your videos and love your channel. I am a subscriber and am addicted to your channel as well. I’ve just started playing again after about 15 years and it’s only because my oldest son took the game up last year. Just these past few months he has gotten me back onto the course and I was so rusty and out of golf shape it was ridiculous. He introduced me to your channel and I’ve watched your tips on breaking 100 and it changed my mindset and I did set that as a goal. 20 years ago I could shoot in the 80’s but I was so far off that I was playing horrible and it was a little frustrating but after few weeks I broke 100 and now am on the verge of breaking 90 and it was just from watching your tips and videos. I struggle and have always struggled with my fairway woods but I’m going to try your tips. I’ve never had golf lessons and was always self taught but the power of RUclips is tremendous. Thanks and keep the vids coming. I’ve fell in love with the game again and have been upgrading my clubs after over 20 years thanks to you!
Beginner golfer here. Just started playing 2 months ago . Currently have a taylormade 3 Rescue. One of my favorite clubs at the moment. Definitely appreciate your channel I’ve already improved in just a short time !
His videos are just getting better and better. It's the manner in which you are explaining and the detail is absolutely great. I hope you will keep it up and of course you have a wonderful swing. Looking forward to digging through more of your videos.
Thanks for your videos Rick. Got back to golf this year and your videos are really helping my game. I use an RBZ 3 wood with a stiff shaft and really nailing it now thanks to your tips!
Just recently pick up golfing, and been watching all of his videos. I break 90 with using Driver and Irons only and now trying to get into single hcp when I realize I have to be able to hit fairway wood. This actually helps me to hit better since I can't really hit hybrid where I have no problem hitting long iron. I hope I can break 80 soon
I have always struggled to use my 3wood from the fairway. I watched this video and headed to the driving range not expecting much gains. How wrong I was...... so wrong. We have toptrace at our local range, I went from not hitting well to consistently hitting 240 yards. From the low cut on the mat. Granted not the fairway on a course. But my 3wood has become my new favourite club at the range. I am losing the ball to the right 20/25yards. What can b done to correct this? A top golf channel which I will be subbing and noting. Look forward to watching pass content and future videos. Cheers.
Great instructional videos that are short sharp and to the point. Great in helping me improving my game in all areas. Tried other video options but most turn me off as they tend to lose my concentration as they are so long winded. Your method of simple tips allow me to go away and practice and implement them in mu game and straight onto the next tutorial. Thanks for your help.
Just picked up some clubs today and tried the driving range for the first time in my life. These comments have put me at ease. I straight up looked stupid out there, glad that it is definitely not as easy as it looks lol.
Honestly, this guide is soo good. My 3 wood has always been my "magic club" its my dad's old steel shaft 3 wood. I think its a Jack Nicklaus AirMax. I dont even carry my driver anymore as its a cheap one and all I do is slice it. Ive hit that 3 wood 250-260 on a good day.
If your looking for a driver to make your slice disappear look at a Wilson Staff D7 offset club face. Changed my game off the block, fitted out at a Pro shop.
I can't believe how much my consistency changed after just watching one of your videos...I was nailing my drives yesterday changed my entire swing. Now I am watching this to improve in the fairways. Thank you
THIS WORKED!!!! Thank you so much. Used this to help me improve my 3 wood as a driver. Striped it 260/270 all day and broke 90 first time this year. THANK. YOU.
Thanks for these tips. I struggle off tight lies with my M3 3 wood so usually use my M4 number 3 rescue instead so I'll give this a try, though the course I play has very few flat lies and normally the ball is either above or below my feet, often on an uphill or downhill too, the worst seeming to be ball below my feet with also a downhill lie so if you could do a follow on for those situations that would be great
I am using a Cobra F8 three and five metal, and I am crushing both of them. But, this wasn't always the case. I have been working on getting them straightened out since summer ended. Finally I watched a video by, none other than ,Mr. Rick Shiels, and it turned my fairway game around. Couldn't have done it without you. Thanks Rick!
Ping G425 3 and 5 woods. Nothing more satisfying than a well struck fairway wood. Unfortunately lately that gas been a struggle. I almost feel as if I'm lifting my head at contact and can't stop doing it. Thus is only club/shot where this happens to me. Anyway as always great content. Thank you for all the great information you share!
Nikewiz lmao same here buddy. I usually slap hook it into the beverage cart. Grab another bucket of beers while I’m over there. Hit on the cart girl too.
Currently I have the Taylormade M4 3W... Love your coaching... Your lessons have lowered my score by 5 strokes... Thank you. Doug Kindred from Washington State...
Great tips, I can’t wait to try this. I’m hitting Taylor Made QI10 3 and 5 woods with regular stand shafts. I love them, but need to make better contact.
Best golf content on RUclips! I watched your Iron striking video several times was hitting everything barely off ground dead right today struck irons so much better thanks sir!!
Watched this video last night after duffing, topping and slicing my 3 wood all over the driving range. Went to the course today and crushed a 240 yd from the fairway to birdie a par 5, net 2! Cheers Rick!
Bro..just watched like 10 videos in a row on your channel. By far the best channel I’ve come across. Going out first thing tomorrow and gonna work some kinks out…appreciate you bro!
I have been watching your videos like an animal needing to feed. i started golfing this year with a friend. We have both broke the 110 barrier just recently , and am presently on the way to breaking 100. awesome! Thank you Rick...
Hey Rick I have a Cobra F8 (Old Bluie's younger sibling) I adjusted it to 13 degrees to match my set lofts. After quite a few rounds and like many of the commenters, I was able to throw the club further than I could hit the ball with it. After watching this video I realized I was topping the ball too much so I changed shaft alignment (move hands forward a bit) as to produce the divot you were talking about. I would say I hit 32 out of 40 balls on the range using this with very good results. Thanks for the tip!
What most of these 3-wood videos fail to mention is that, regardless of your set-up, unless you produce a lot of clubhead speed, most amateurs should forget about hitting a 3-wood off the deck ... they'll get better results with a 5 or 7-wood.
Love the tips here. I had been using some Tour Edge Reaction II fairway woods I’ve had since 2006 when I was in my third year of high school! I used to hit them decently but not anymore. Recently found basically brand new Nike VR-II Pro driver, 3 wood and 5 wood at a yard sale, bought them and put ‘em in my bag. Much more forgiving and easier to hit for me. Frequently able to hit Most par 5’s in two or able to just lay it up short now for a little bump n run shot. This video helped and I’ve gained more confidence with the fairway woods instead of trying to go 2 or 3 iron off the deck.

I love my Mizuno JPX 900 3 wood off the tee and the fairway. It's an absolute rocket. Hardly ever take my 1 wood out, just cant seem to stop slicing it, and the 3 wood goes just as far. Thanks for this video, I learn something new every day. Cheers
Since I got my 'new' used set of golf clubs that has a 3 and 5 wood, I've been trying to get used to them as I know they can take strokes off my game. I've been getting air with my 5 wood but not my 3 wood. I will try to make adjustments and see what tomorrow's round brings! Thanks, Rick! Enjoy watching you and am learning a lot!
I have Adams graphite shafts and Driver. I love your tips and you’ve just given me another good one. I’ve been leaning back too far to hit off fairway. Thank you AGAIN
hi rick im changing to a 3 wood to replace the driver because Im real accurate with it and i may loose distance but course management is to me more important and i feel it will improve my game all around.
I just recently started playing golf at the age of 55. I bought a few Taylor Made RBZ Black clubs. Driver, 3 wood, 4&5 hybrids. I like the RBZs a lot. Seems to have helped me some over the Stratas I was using. After watching Rick’s videos I am hitting a lot better on the range. My Son and I are playing this weekend so I will try Rick’s advice again and see how I do.
Mr Shiels, your videos are not only informative but have inspired my golf experience. Next year will be 20yrs for me. I shoot over 100. With your help I should break 90 by this time next year. Thx a bunch. I tell everyone about the best instructor ever!!!
Moving with the golf shot as u move toward the left side is key. I generally transition as the clubhead moves downward and time the release/extension point. For me, the Details I picked up in this video are: 1. The right elbow stays connected and only separates naturally, once it reaches the top of the backswing then traces the path back to the slot.. 2. The right arm is still slightly flexed at impact and extends just past the ball to the divot point as the back of the left hand squares and lead hip opens. and 3. The top half hangs back to "catapult" the ball through impact, keeping the ball position ahead about under the left side of the bill of my cap. I also noticed your chest does not have to be pointing down as much as it does for hybrid shots. Interesting.. thanks for posting.. the slow motion parts and line graphics really communicate the techniques more effectively.. I cannot wait to try this swing.. Q: Does the finish imply the ball will release upon landing? Or will it check more because of the faster tempo of your swing. 🏌🏼♂️
3:45 I appreciate the slow-mo on this one. It shows how stead your head position is on the backswing and the start of your downswing... this is where I think I get into trouble and turn it into top-city.
Rick, I really liked how you showed the club head sat behind the ball.very different from how I have Behind the ball. I think I have the club closed at set-up, where yours is more neutral and the face is laying back. I can’t wait to head out and hit some balls. Thanks Bill F
I found that moving the ball further back in my stance did the trick for me. I was playing it too close to my front foot. Helps me hit a tad downward on it too. I tried it in both my matches today and I had some serious fun. I was booming my 3 and 5 Ping Wood G 400s. Spider Dubiel
I have a Callaway Big Bertha Left handed 3 wood. Love the Video's Rick playing today and will try this. I just need more distance for my fairway shots. I am a High handicapper.
I just bought the Steelhead XR 3 wood. Last fall I got the Steelhead iron set with the 5&4 hybrids. They hit like a dream for me. Any higher handicappers out there that are looking to buy a set of clubs, consider distance and forgiveness and you have the Steelhead XR.
I've got an old Nike Square 3 wood, it's heavy and ugly but the sound is cracking and I'm getting the same distance as with my driver. I love it! Thanks for the videos!
Needed these tips thanks Rick. I have a Benross HTX 3 Wood I got in thr HTX package set so far very very impressed for £450 down from £700 from American golf
Superb video as always. I wish I could watch a 5 minute video of you just swinging in slow motion over and over from different views, different clubs. I learn a lot from slow mo, and the repeated views give me a chance to see more. Keep up the good work!
Just purchased the Cobra F9 Driver and fairway wood. Got a great price as they are on sale, ($250 and $190 respectively) I am starting to fall in love with both.
Used Ping G400 which was an easy swinging club, but this year I put in a Cobra King RadSpeed BigTour 3 wood and a Tour 5 wood! Had to go back and watch this video even though Fairway woods are a strength your video gave me less tops last year! 🙏🏼
I started golfing 1yr ago and I've NEVER been able to hit my fairway woods other than off the tee.. i watched this video ONCE and NEVER EVEN PRACTICED and instantly started hitting my fairway woods 175+ yards... LIFE SAVER
Q.) What fairway woods do you play? If you found this video helpful *SHARE* with a friend👍
Wilson staff C300 bought it after the season ended so still waiting to actually play it
Callaway Great Big Bertha 5 wood set at 17 degree.
ping g15 3 wood its hammer time when it comes out the bag

Michael Libert try extending your arms through impact
Amen Ben. Exactly what helped me. Got to be careful though and extend at the right time.
Put the ball more in the middle of your stance. It help me for topping it
It’s your grip, stop holding your club like it’s a sword. Nice easy grip in the address and take away. Then smack it.
Michael Libert because it’s the best game ever
You lost me at the part where you said I found the middle of the fairway. xD
Cobra 8
😂
🤣
😂🤣👍🏻 same
i'm often in the center of the fairway... usually the one going the other direction after a big slice, almost hitting the players there..
I've found that I can throw my 3 wood alot further than what I can hit a ball with it. 😠😠
lol ... I could say the same thing!
ROFL YES!!!
I kick with my foot, straighter, further higher, keep hitting b4 the ball.....
😂 😂 I felt that mate I know how you feel
You and me both man
Wow watched this video. Went to the range the next day and had instant success.
3 wood carries 215 straight
5 wood reaches 215
Hybrid 5 goes 190-200
All reasonably straight! Incredible I would leave these clubs at home and just hit 4 irons it got so bad!

Seriously: Ricks tips are highly valuable!
Just got a Titleist 909 F3 and I love it, 13⁰ so a little strong but love the low shots I get from it
My 3 wood is my rescue club...when I need to rescue myself from the wrong fairway.

Pahaha ohhh right when your on the other fairway on a diff hole
It's my go to club - on the green, after I've thrown my putter in the water.

Best instruction to hit a 3wood off the fairway. Game changer for me. I'm confident in my fairway now as I am with my 7i
I have Adams graphite shafts and Driver. I love your tips and you’ve just given me another good one. I’ve been leaning back too far to hit off fairway. Thank you AGAIN
hi rick im changing to a 3 wood to replace the driver because Im real accurate with it and i may loose distance but
course management is to me more important and i feel it will improve my game all around.
Current Ping G410 just ordered the G425 LST 3 wood, cant wait to try it and see the difference
Hands forward slightly leading club and a slightly descending blow is a must for hitting a fairway wood successfully off the the fairway
Thanks for the great tip! My current 3 woods are the Xr16 and xr16 pro.
3:45 I appreciate the slow-mo on this one. It shows how stead your head position is on the backswing and the start of your downswing... this is where I think I get into trouble and turn it into top-city.
Switching up from taylormade jetspeed 3W to a PXG 0341X 2W. Thanks for all your tips.
Rick, I really liked how you showed the club head sat behind the ball.very different from how I have Behind the ball. I think I have the club closed at set-up, where yours is more neutral and the face is laying back. I can’t wait to head out and hit some balls. Thanks Bill F
My new Cobra F9 3-Wood arrived today and i love it. Got it in white and black. So easy to hit and flight is unreal
Thanks for the video just upgraded to tour edge E723 in 3 wood, 7 wood and a 3 hybrid
Just bought a cobra superlite 3 wood today so excited to try it out
I found that moving the ball further back in my stance did the trick for me. I was playing it too close to my front foot. Helps me hit a tad downward on it too. I tried it in both my matches today and I had some serious fun. I was booming my 3 and 5 Ping Wood G 400s. Spider Dubiel
Today I finally hit my 3 wood clean and crisp. So satisfying when you hit it right. Thank for this video Rick!
Thanks Rick. Just got a new Bombtech driver and 3 wood. Needed to know how to hit the 3 wood, never had one before.
Good tips. I don't have a driver and i have a bit of trouble adjusting from a 3wd teed up and a 3 wd on the fairway.
Waiting for my new Cobra 3 wood to come in so I can set up as you’ve shown us here!!! Really want to get my score down and this is the answer! Cheers!
I have a Callaway Big Bertha Left handed 3 wood. Love the Video's Rick playing today and will try this. I just need more distance for my fairway shots. I am a High handicapper.
Can't get enough of this channel!!
Btw, I carry a 2013 Callaway X Hot Pro 15 degree.
Very helpful. I play with the m5 6.5 x stiff smoke shaft
I've got an old Nike Square 3 wood, it's heavy and ugly but the sound is cracking and I'm getting the same distance as with my driver. I love it! Thanks for the videos!
Titleist 980F. Great Video! Makes good sense, the swing has to be close to that of a long iron.
LIFE SAVER
Par Saver***
Currently a ping g30 13 degree with oban devotion shaft. I love it.
