Jim was a cool enough guy to sit down and talk with you guys for an HOUR about a nearly 25 year old project he worked on
Jim is super cool, and a very nice guy. Lol and he's got a good memory too, a lotta folks I've talked to about stuff from the 90's can't remember hardly anything.
Easily the best place I ever worked.
Yeah I think they know bud, they were there
In my experience, people are usually happy to talk about old projects, if they remember it at least. Older people enjoy passing down their stories.
@@DJIVision q1p
That thing about the Virtual Boy testing is wild.
If it wasn't coming from such a reliable source, I'd laugh it off.
@@stephenfiler3204 I remember Nintendo being really paranoid the VB was going to caused problems with kids vision or their necks or who knows what else. The manual for that system was absolutely LOADED with health warnings.
@@Canadas_Very_Own It was also the reason why VB didn't have a head strap of any kind. Nintendo was afraid that kids would put the helmet on and start running into walls and whatnot.
Makes me curious about what the testing process for the 3DS's stereoscopic 3D was like now.
A Clockwork Red
The thing about the virtual boy testing is absolutely terrifying
The eye doctor does the same stuff.
@@lalehiandeity1649 But that’s tested and much safer
@@deez2037 i'd like to imagine nintendo actually hired doctors but idk
"STOP IT STOP IT PLEASE I BEG YOU!! IT'S A SIN!"
Hey! Editor-in-chief of the F-Zero Wiki you showed in your video! First of all, thanks for showing it :)
Your info on Zero Racers will be really helpful and our article on it will be adjusted when I can. Thank you for finding out more information!
Cheers mate :)
I'd say that it must be painful as an F-Zero fan to see a game almost make it out just to get snubbed at the last second... but then again it was an F (or should that be G?)-Zero game for the Virtual Boy, so like... how much was really lost, one wonders...
Of all things I expected from this video, learning about the existence of Virtual Boy torture dungeons was not one of them.
Yo I'd love a whole series on this channel basically Mythbusting a bunch of false video game "facts"
Unfortunately, this would quickly become a series that in most cases says "This was just a fake leak of someone who posted it on Twitter and made everything up".
Kinda like Gametrailers' old "Pop Fiction" series
@@RealRomplayer That’s how a lot rumors and myths start don’t it? Someone exaggerates and or makes something up, and nowadays you’ll likely see it on places like Twitter.
Well, I _would_ like that "the Giygas Battle is an abortion" theory to be killed off, finally, given how thoroughly it's been debunked as pareidolia and misinterpretation.
@@Santoryu90 Well, yes and no.
You can see from the third example in the video how rumors can come into existence because of something that was actually happening. Sometimes it's actually completely true, sometimes there might have been a misunderstanding, but at least there was some truth to the story to begin with. You could even call this a "leak" (because somebody who is working for example for Nintendo told another person outside of the company about stuff happening).
But nowadays the term "leak" is used too loosely. Most of the "leaks" and rumors are based on somebody who just makes something up without any actual source. They just claim something, for example directly before or after a Nintendo Direct, to get some internet fame. And this then spreads and gets bigger and bigger.
This is why I hate the term "leak" nowadays, because in 95% of the time it's not actually a leak, but just some made-up BS.
If you're reading this Nintendo, please give us a new F-Zero 🙏
@vellicia 18 get out.
you guys need to get comment moderators look at all the bots
@Don't read profile photo ok I won’t. Nobody should
How does a remake of F-Zero GX sound?
Sure would be nice. Guess it’s not as popular as their other franchises because they haven’t released a F-Zero game since 2004.
Absolutely loving these more journalistic-investigative videos! It’s really cool how many contacts that DYKG has accumulated, it’s incredible to see the pieces come together to document gaming history.
Great direction to take this channel, I’m always excited to watch new videos ASAP.
Ahhh Dr. Lava was on the case! Between him and Liam Robertson, you have a couple of the best investigative games journalists out there. I hope this video gets a lot of engagement so that you make more like this! I'd love to hear a dive into the Mother 3 localization rumors since you noted Tom Phillips was one of the proponents of that story years ago.
Thanks Shadow :) Got a few more videos like this coming up soon, including one about Pokemon rumors scheduled for next weekend.
Stars reminds me of when the thought for a Pokemon Z began after X and Y. There's some parts to think a Z version was left over: Zygarde's Formes, the XYZ anime..
Internal data confirmed that there were 2 more gen 6 kalos games planned, but they were never released.
Most likely XZ and YZ.
@@TheZett From a single source which I find a tad shady.
@@TheZett That would have been interesting to see
@@c0mpu73rguy The source is a real leak.
@@citrusnx8283 How can you tell?
Very well investigated. Honestly. Not just clickbaiting trash, but really digging.
I remember when DYKG was just repackaged facts, but this was genuinely all new information for me and quite enthralling as they sourced everything.
Agreed, the quality of their videos improved over time, which is not something that really happens with many of these types of channels.
Have you watched Veritasium's video on clickbait?
Love this concept. Definitely keep tapping into the "lost media" pipeline. Guaranteed views, especially from me.
The part about how they tested the Virtual Boy... Is disturbing.
They do the same kinda stuff at the eye doctor.
@@lalehiandeity1649 I dunno what kinda eye doctor you're going to, but the only part of that my eye doctor does is dilate my pupils and do a quick burst of air to test for glaucoma. I don't get strapped to a vice, have my eyes forced open, have plastic rods nearly touching my eyes, and especially don't have any of that done to me repeatedly for an excessive period of time.
@@TrueCrouton I have had them do that once, something about checking pressure; but it took three doctors PLUS the main doctor to fix it to where I could actually keep my eye open and it was slightly embarrassing haha
I would say you were right on the money about Stars. And it's known that Game Freak does develop multiple games at the same time in order to release Pokemon games every year. Nintendo knew from experience that X&Y were what really got the 3DS to sell, in spite of the handheld's rocky start. It may even have saved the Wii U, had they not decided a home entry was unnecessary. But using it to prop up the Switch in a rather desperate time would have been an obvious choice... Until the Switch proved itself. Then Stars was unnecessary. But Game Freak didn't want to throw away the new ideas and the 3DS was still alive. So we got Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon to close out Pokemon on portable only consoles(not counting the Switch Lite.)
That's certainly what you said reworded by me in a practically pointless comment only put together to help this video with trending.
Another telling thing that may hint at stars is SM and especially USUM’s pretty poor performance on 3DS. It seems like they were pushing the 3DS to allow for more switch features and to use more of its power.
The problem is that the timeline when Game Freak was working on a Switch version of Pokemon Sun & Moon but deciding to cancel it if favor of keeping it a 3DS sequel and instead working on Pokemon Let's Go doesn't really line up. Game Freak knew they were going to put future generations on the Switch so testing with Sun and Moon's assets makes sense but, as an actual title feels like it collides with too many Game Freak titles. It could have been where they started but, Pokemon Go became huge and they pivoted to Let's Go for the first HD title but, that isn't really an actual Pokemon Stars and doesn't like up with Tom's proposed story (the timeline from pivots to Let's Go would be late Summer 2016 while Tom's story would be at earliest late October 2016 and that would be a lot of faith off just a trailer since preorders didn't open until after the January 2017 presentation)
@@PIKMINROCK1 Nintendo dropped the 3DS in 2017, I do standby the "If the Switch wasn't doing well it would of made it to market" crowd. I mean, hell people want enhanced ports of a bunch of 3DS titles. If I were Nintendo, I would release those games on the Switch if it was possible. At least the enhanced ports of the original games (Emerald, Pokemon Z, Samus Returns, Project X Zone) its basically money being left alone.
@@PIKMINROCK1 That isn't necessarily true. Third versions are often easier to make because you're modifying already existing code. Game Freak made their Pokemon models so they would be usable on systems beyond the 3DS. So porting to the Switch isn't... Farfetch'd.
After all, think about all of the games ported from Wii U to Switch. The two have entirety different processor architectures. But it was possible because they could recompile the games for that architecture. Granted, they would still need to make sure textures are better and that more content was on the table, but that's to be expected. Let's Go would have been under huge time constraints, which actually explains quite a bit in regards to it being strictly Kanto. Kanto has less NPC variety and less important characters to model. Plus it also meant less features to worry about, including many evolution methods. It was honestly a game that was optimized for a quick turnaround.
And Stars would make sense as a third version, if only because of Necrozma's symbol being a star. And you have to admit the timing of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's announcement was odd, being in June and not Pokemon Day, like Sun & Moon. And the Switch was seriously a make or break moment for the company.
@@silversonic1 To be clear, the problem is the exact narrative the journalist proposes in that Pokemon Stars was supposed to be a 2017 game that got scrapped in upon the success of the Switch. If Pokemon Stars was merely Game Freak testing out their engine for HD games before they settled on Let's Go and Sword and Shield, there isn't really an issue but, as an actual product planned to be in people's hands that suddenly gets cancelled after they started on Let's Go, it doesn't seem right.
Like Let's Go's scope is limited but considering, they were working on Pokemon Sword and Shield at the same time and Game Freak isn't that big and that Let's Go only has under 2 years of development time, it makes sense. If we add in development of a 3rd HD title, it seems like Game Freak is juggling way more than they can handle. That would be 4 major titles plus Pokemon Quest and Giga Wrecker all at the same time
With the question at the end, I'd love to see you guys investigating on the cancelled Kirby GCN, as recent findings on concept art would reveal the game's main menu was structured similar to Kirby Super Star, with one being straight up a Great Cave Offensive sequel
This led to people figuring out a lot of the CG assets and character models were likely built for Kirby GCN and repurposed to the DS after its cancellation on 2006
Amazing video guys! The Pokemon Stars discourse still is fascinating to see today, I somehow missed on the fact Gen 7 removed most touch screen functions to indicate its potential existence
I'm pretty sure many of the concepts and ideas for the GCN Kirby got utilized in Star Allies. I don't have anything concrete to confirm this.
Also, the Golem (as in the enemy from Amazing Mirror) trophy in Super Smash Bros Brawl apparently reused a model from the cancelled Kirby game.
I somehow got wind of e+ when it was about to come out all the way over here in America and I started saving my allowance in a peanut butter jar for "Animal Crossing 2" and even had the japanese release date written down, completely confusing it as a game coming out here. Cue stupid little kid a few months later at gamestop asking where's animal crossing 2 to confused staff
That's adorable
man you must have been pretty disappointed
This was an awesome video! Just like the Metroid Dread History & Rumors, this ranks up there as one of my favorite videos DYKG has produced. Love the direction taken!
you guys are adapting this channel so damn well and you are putting in the WORK to get these made!
Shame about the Stars situation, Tom has always seemed like a good journalist, one mistake doesn’t change that!
I hate how gamers will be so quick to dismiss a public source who prides themselves on only publishing solid leads, just because they "got it wrong" - which as this video notes, is not always the fault of the journalist. The Mother 3 stuff alluded to in this video is still brought up to denigrate Emily Rogers, who had been a great source for inside info until the internet turned on her.
He still says it’s correct so I believe him. Plans change.
Why Is The Hog Rider Soo Cool?
I remember a rumor that mother 1,2 and 3 were coming to the DS at one point but nothing came if it, and I’m still not sure if it was panned but cancelled or just a rumor. As well as a yoshi safari 2 for GBA and only one screenshot exists and again it’s unknown if that’s real or not
Mother 1 and 2 did make it onto the GBA in a single cartridge, so maybe that could be part of the reasons for the rumors.
Are you talking about the Purple Yoshi Tech Demo Game thing?
@@Quartzer. yes
With this level of quality and care put into it, I'd watch a whole series like this about lost gaming media
I personally think Stars was a thing - but probably cancelled early on and got reworked into USUM. Considering the theme of Stars was connected with Necrozma (the legendary literally got a star on its back), and USUM featuring Necrozma as their main legendary, I think its easy to conclude this.
Man oh man.
You guys started out as a more interesting version of WatchMojo's top 10 (insert game), and now you guys are doing deeps dives into games, sleuthing, dredging up gaming secrets.
You guys are awesome and in my opinion the number one reporting team on games.
Keep it coming guys.
Gotta say, this is the first time I've been genuinely interested in a sponsor's service. Thank you!
F-Zero GX is one of my favorite all-time games and it sucks that a new one has never been made. The people at Nintendo always say they need something new for them to make a new game, but all you really need is online functionality so that you’d have 30 player online courses. On top of that, there are so many unlockable/secret characters that they’ve had in various games that it would be the largest roster they’ve ever had. And besides, Mario Kart hasn’t been offering anything new and look at how many times that’s been released
i was always hyped for stars and wondered why it didnt come out
then the romhack got released which was a great and comedic alternative to something that may have never existed
Well done, your videos about lost/ rumoured games are always a treat. I'd personally like to see the history of Kirby romurs get investigated next.
Huh, so Jim is the guy who keeps telling me I'm pretty when I finish in first place.
Another possible hint for Pokémon Stars is that we never got a Nintendo game released in November 2017 for the Nintendo Switch, and it might be because Nintendo saved that time slot for Pokémon Stars. If the game existed, it would be cancelled during second half of 2016, which makes it difficult to reschedule that time slot.
I really like this format, hope you'll do more lost game debunking
I would love to see a deep dive into Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball for the Gamecube.
Please make more of these videos! I would love to see how many games that were rumored are actually real or entirely fake!
I have no idea why because it’s entirely a moot point now but there’s a part of me that still wants Pokemon Stars to be released. It was just something that I was so excited hearing about in 2017 that it would make me feel satisfied in a weird way. Plus I still lament the loss of the “third version” format idk.
I get how you feel. There's a part of me that still wishes for Pokemon Z even though I know it's absurd lmao
It warms my heart to see a sponsor segment with a sponsor I actually used. Twice. The first time was to get Happy Happy Clover OST, one of the rarest CDs to get after all copies sold out.
Really like those more journalistic videogame videos, especially when you can contact someone who worked at the time, it brings a lot of cool info about it.
Thanks for putting in the extra effort for these vids even if the algorithm isn't always kind to them, I'll always be tuning in. Great job again guys
Nice work DYKG.
This was really good!
Lost Sony games next?
I wish they would release a special mini Nintendo 64 containing just an absolute version of Dobustu no Mori. Having a dedicated original Animal Crossing collectible mini-console would be fantastic.
Kind of wish Animal Crossing 2 did exist. I absolutely adore the Gamecube version 🥰 Great video, as always. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for that. Great stuff. I could have sworn we had Virtual at the '96 E3, but I could be mistaken. I know we had it at two shows, and '95 was one of them.
DYKG does what IGN-don't: verify sources (and actually play games).
Nice investigations! I'd love to see the same for the heavily rumored Pokemon Gray and Pokemon Z (especially the later).
I want that Virtual Boy game now.
I could hear you talk about lost Nintendo games all day.
I remember animal crossing 2. Absolutely makes sense that it was basically an translation error
Joe merrick, the Serebii webmaster describing something as "BS"? HOW IRONIC.
Honestly, surprised you guys talked about Pokemon Stars but not Pokemon Z considering there's tons of evidence to confirm it's existence but I guess Stars is more of an anomaly than Z could ever be, considering bits of Z appeared in stuff like Sun and Moon, and the Pokemon Anime had XYZ whereas Stars seemingly is more of a mystery on whether it truly existed or not lol
well Z do not have a reputable site writing an article about how it is coming soon and later writing another article to continue holding his stand and even having an amazon preorder listing. all info about Z coming soon are via fake leaks and rumors. (i do strongly agree it is planned at some point though)
@@antant9523 Yeah that makes sense
This was really interesting and fun to watch! I'd love to watch another video like this on more lost nintendo games or a video on lost Xbox games
"mutually beneficial" is one of the shadiest things you could have said in my mind haha. Idk to me It just sounds like a phrase only mobsters say XD
It was a lot of fun following along to each mystery being unrolled. I'd definitely like more videos like this!
I hope this becomes more of a series. It's awesome to see how far you can reach out to get the truth!
Maybe not a compliment, but the VA's on DYKG have such relaxing voices, it's something I use to get to sleep.
"A $60 up-rezed 3DS port would make the Switch look bad in its first year.... but in it's _third_ year, that's perfectly okay!"
There is one game I have wondered about whether it existed or not. One time, a Rare employee, I cannot remember who, posted a book on Twitter (like a game proposition project) named Donkey Kong Vs Super Wario. I would love to know more about that project, if it ever got pitched, shut down, or just anything about it.
Apparently that was the original pitch for Donkey Kong Country, and iirc it was reworked because Miyamoto suggested Rare to come up with original bad guys to give the game more of an identity
I would love for you guys to talk about Super Mario 64 2, Zelda 3, and Mario 128. Mostly the latter to see the history of the game actually becoming Pikmin, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.
Nintendo should always release the remastered versions of old Pokemon games along with their new generation releases. Atleast this way the old games won't die
Let’s get another video just like this! I love learning about lost media!
Guys pokemon stars isn't cancelled it's just coming in 2030
Awesome video! I really enjoy the deep dives into rumors and lost media. It's a shame that a lot of the time cataloging gaming history and companies wanting to preserve IP/Copyright are at odds with each other. I wonder if that leak that brought us the Spaceworld Pokemon demo will mean it's even harder in the future to research Nintendo games that didn't make it to development.
Definitely one of the best videos I've seen on this channel, great job.
"and up-res 3DS port selling for $60 could have made the Switch look bad"... meanwhile... Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee
The amount of work in this video must have been insane! Fantastic video and well worth the effort!
Animal Crossing 2 - I never heard of this, but upon you laying out the premise "a sequel to Animal Crossing GCN was announced in a Japanese magazine", my mind went to "I'm assuming the internet got confused, and thought Animal Crossing e+ was Animal Crossing 2".
I think you can point at the fact that Pokémon sword and shield didn’t include every Pokémon as a reason why Pokémon stars never came out. I really feel like they knew it was going to be controversial so they wanted todo everything they could to try and say “its not possible” so now they have the excuse that it was never this way on switch/
Sad that Gamefreak was making Gen 9 and Legends Arceus at the same time, probablly, while ICLA was making BDSP so it sounds like there were 3 games being developed at the same time with Matsuda having to basically be the boss for 3 games at the same time although gen 9's development started later than BDSP and Arceus, probably. A shame Gamefreak has to pump out games/DLC for the holiday rush too commonly.
Masuda didn't direct PLA or even produce it. Masuda directed BDSP, Iwao directed PLA, and most likely Ohmori will be directing SV.
@@Boltothemage well that explains things about BDSP......
this is a great video, you can tell a lot of work and research went into it
I'm glad you guys covered a Virtual Boy game that's so cool!! So many unreleased great games
God I’ve been following this channel since the first videos. I really appreciate all the work that goes into this. Def one of my favorite channels
I personally never believed the Stars rumor. Game Freak's not the type to make a game for an unproven console. Remember, they released Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 for the DS, over a year after the 3DS was already out
I could very much see ultra sun and moon being originally meant as cross platform games. All of this also gives some perspective on why gamefreak has struggled to fully jump into the switch era.
This was a pretty neat video, I would love to see more like it. Nintendo using literal torture to test the VB is wild.
It seems to me that Pokemon Stars was probably legit but turned into USUM. Iirc, there were issues porting the models to the Switch for SwSh.
Maybe they first experienced this issue with Stars and just decided to keep the game on 3DS, and from there the project evolved into USUM.
Stars also might've never been intended as the game's final title, just a project name for the game's development.
i dont think pokemon stars ever got made but they probably maybe planned to have it on switch, but it defo wasn't a finished product or a test demo because that would have been way too much work
Love lost media stuff! Great video and information.
I really enjoy these more investigative type pieces, it's a great evolution of the channel's content. Always excited to see you guys upload something new!
Joe just shits on anything that could possibly put Pokemon in a negative light. Pretty sure Tom is right.
Those "torture tests" are just normal eye check procedures hahaha
These indepth dives were super interesting! Maybe there are some rumored Sonic games which warrant the same level of investigation?
I love this style of video, and as far as recommendations to dig into are concerned, what was the deal with 'Starcraft: Ghost?'
I had magazines that talked about it, then it just disappeared. Then it wasn't "officially cancelled" for years with nothing going on with it.
Wasn't it where the concept for the character Nova in Starcraft 2 came from? So many questions I wanna know!
Thank you for the video! So cool, never knew about this. So fun to know ^^
You guys are doing an amazing work, and I feel lucky to be able to watch such quality content. Bravo and cheers from France!
First time actually using a youtubers promo. Just ordered some cool stuff
This kind of content is so cool and intersting. May not get as many clicks as the rumors themselves but even better imho. Thanks DYKG!
Thanks, it was really fun helping out!
I really admire you and your Videos. So interesting and well made. Please never stop with this
This video is awsome, I would like to see more like it. The history of gaming is really full of miscomunication and rumors that are worth revisiting and make them clear. Keep em coming, DYKG!
I'd love to have a video giving the lowdown on the Star Fox Grand Prix rumours
That was originally supposed to be included in this video. Still have some digging to do though, so it'll be covered in a later video.
This was a particularly fun and interesting video. Thanks.
10:53 I'd rather Jack Bros makes it to Switch Online, I heard it's the best Virtual Boy game and I'm going to get into MegaTen's main series and non-Persona spinoffs after I'm done with Persona 5 Strikers. (Also I find it odd that Jack Ripper never made it into the Persona sub-franchise when Jack Frost, Pyro Jack and Pixie all have (what was Pixie even doing being playable in that game? ))
Dude, G-Zero must be found.
Please investigate the 2016/2017 Mother 3 localization rumors. During this time it seemed like Nintendo was pushing a lot if Mother 3 related things, so I'm curious if the rumor held any truth.
Game freak is smart with assets and they are wizards at compression for their games. Like most studios I wouldn't be surprised if "stars" was the internal code name for ultra sun and ultra moon. I believe that the post mortem provided is the most logical explanation for what happened if it is real. But unless we get concrete information on it's existence, I have to agree with Joe/Serebii unless we get concrete evidence saying otherwise. Lack of data isn't always a data point.
the switch is actually the best opportunity to revive the vb games, run them in single screen and/or vr headset modes, unlike the ds family the switch is well suited for this kind of dual screen
This is REAL gaming journalism. Take notes people!!
I remember hearing rumors about Pokémon Stars! I was one of those hyped Pokémon fans waiting for it, but unfortunately we just got Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee. I can complain, but I’m just glad we got something for the Switch while the new region/game was being developed.
I remember there was some Hi Res commercials of the games back when they were coming out.
Why did you include the bit about the Serebii mod not believing the rumor? That didn't add any information and feels like it was only added to put the dude on blast. 🤔🤔
Nintendo coming up with ideas for a Black Mirror episode before the show even existed with that Virtual Boy story.
Man, Pokemon Sun/Moon on 720P looks pretty good honestly. I missed a lot of 3DS games, and now that I (finally) have a Switch... I guess I'd like to play them in HD?
