been diagnosed with IBS for about 5 years, completely ruined my life, career choice, life choices and decisions to follow. It disgusts me seeing people say oh ya its quite common and 20% people may have this. The suicide rate would be through the roof i feel like if 20% of the condition was dealing with what I go through. From the digestion issues, pain, diarrhea, constipation, and epic amount of anxiety of being away from a bathroom, and the depression that follows. there's got to be a better answer then diet and meditation, this does nothing.
Oh my god yessss!!!! I have lost multiple jobs because of it. It is so debilitating! It is sickening when people just come out and say oh just eat something or take something. I do not have anxiety the only time i do is when my IBS is flared up really bad and then it becomes a battle with my brain and my gut. I have tried alot of different stuff its wild. i found that gut hypnosis has helped me alot along with CBD oil and weed.

I added so much fiber and it didn't make a bit of difference. It wasn't until I used the FODMAP elimination diet that I found my food triggers and improved my situation dramatically. It's not a cure; stress is still a trigger. But I got my life back.

This may not be a "fix" video, but it has been very settling for me and has prompted me to look deeper into what things I can do to try to remedy this very frustrating condition which I have suffered with for over a year. I like Dr Gray's style of delivery of information. He is not uptight about the subject in describing function, anatomy, etc and that is really appreciated. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO!
OMG! Why i just saw this vid (though i subscribed here)? Been seeing docs for the past years but only recently (who was a gen. Med. Doc) told me about IBS. He didnt explain to me further but he said “i think what you have is IBS-constipation”. I didnt see any doc after that. I wanted to see him again for the check up but couldnt get a sched with him (in this country hard to get an appointment with doc in public hospital. Needed to wait like 3-4 months before u get an appointment and not sure if u will have the same doc). And gotcha! I saw this vid and voila! I learned a lot! Everything about IBS! Thank you so much, Dr. James! God bless you and your fam!❤❤❤
This is the best lecture I have listened to on IBS. I would not have gotten through my recent out of the blue flare of 12 weeks (after eating 12 dried apricots😩) without this information. Wish my Gastroenterologist had been this informative. Education on one’s condition is so needed!
Two years later. After'you made tihis comment about IBS and appricots: appricots can have alaxative effect even for people with healthy digestion. The quantity matters a lot 😊. You can eat 1-2 appricots and you'll be fine. (23 years with IBS-D here. Still counting... with psychiatric treatment against depression and anxiety. Suicidal thinking still ocurs. I grew old waiting for a medical breakthrough for IBS, but Immodium is still the only med I can count on.
I felt this meeting on IBS was so informative and interesting. I learned so much. It is comforting to hear all the facts and suggestions that were offered. Thank you again for your expertise.
Thank you Dr James Gray. That was a wonderful lecture which made a lot of the issues quite clear. It will definitely help people who are suffering from IBS to reduce if not completely overcome their problems. I personally have successfully managed to get rid of most of the problems by going on a diet using a trial and error method.
It's inevitable that we will find the mechanism and cure as IBS becomes more prevalent. Especially when it affects determined scientists who have high standards for life and won't settle for coping mechanisms. I still remember when I felt normal and could eat anything with perfect stools. I won't stop asking questions until I find a solution with actual results
One tip that may help some people is intermittent fasting/one meal a day diet. I have found for me that the longer my bowels have to process the food I eat, and rest afterwards, the less symptomatic I feel. Everyone is different so don’t take my word for it that this will work for you. I’m just sharing my personal experience.
Intermittent fasting helps me too. I always eat less than what I am hungry for and distract myself not to think much about food. Not easy to do on daily basis but have to...an IBS sufferer's life is not easy. Your social life gets affected a lot.
I was diagnosed 30 years ago ibs nothing worked except, food allergy testing, answer dairy sensitive, oat sensitive , elimination of most these foods was my solution, goat milk , easy digestion. No nuts , no grains. Symptoms relieve , not cure but comfort . I hope this helps, as my symptoms were endless suffering. Bless you should u try, bless u should it work.
IBS-C is my diagnosis; partly from age, partly from being status-post bariatric surgery- no matter what precipitated it- HERE I BE ! So I'm going to listen to this presentation abd see what I can learn. PCP has ME on Linzess, Warned me about loose stools. Ha Ha- I never got any farther than pudding Consistency- but ....
@@madeleiner559 the shutdown last year has healed my stomach . I am free from medication. I have to be mindful about stress and have to push my body to restful/digestion phase (parasympathetic nervous system) after work. The body can’t go on a “fight or flight “ all day long (even after work) .. and of course for me stay away from triggered food .
Great presentation! However, it is important to remind patients that IBS is not a single disease. It is a collection of symptoms that may have various root causes and that will guide how it should be treated. I.e., post-infectious IBS vs. overuse of antibiotics vs. secondary to an autoimmune disease or fibromyalgia vs. motility disorders vs. microbiome driven imbalances that produce symptoms (SIBO/IMO or just dysbiosis), etc. Furthermore, it is known that approximately 80% of IBS patients have SIBO due to a faulty ileocecal valve (backwash of colon microbes into the small intestine).
I've had ibsd since kindergarten, and I'm turning 65 next week. I was constantly being sent home from school. My mom was chronically constipated and always told me to be glad that I could go, but she didn't understand that the going never stopped. I have found that keeping a food/emotion diary is helpful to spot trends. This is how I learned that chocolate triggered migraines. Still, I haven't found anything helpful for the ibsd. I tend to get dehydrated since I avoid fluids when traveling or knowing I'll be far from a toilet. And, I tend to just not eat. Food hurts, so I avoid it. Then the dr says I'm anorexic, but I'm not and he doesn't get it either. No dr does, so far.
I get how you feel, I have IBSD as well. Life has never been the same. I avoid social functions and food. I dont drink much water or take sugary food. I dont take gluten or dairy as well. I would happily take IBSC (Constipation) over IBSD (Diarrhea).
My experience: I've had IBS for at least 20 yrs. Bouts that last from several days to several months. Having a bad time right now-everything giving me D. Eating soft, low residue foods helping a bit. I noticed the intensity and symptoms have changed since I aged...painful gas and nausea. The restroom emergencies are affecting my life. I believe one mistake I made was when I first noticed mild symptoms I should have addressed it. No oily food, skins, seeds, chocolate, nuts, onions, peppers, soda, pasta, dairy, heavy food or overeating. So no fun for me. I believe sugar is a big culprit. I struggle to cut it out of my diet. Last bout I ate poached fish and apple sauce until I healed. Anyway, thank you Doctor and good health to all!
I’ve lived with this for well over 20 years. I’m exhausted from trying remedies that don’t work. Mine is so embarrassing. If I don’t take Imodium every day I have time managing symptoms. I live in the US so like millions of us, I can’t afford healthcare. There are literally times where I have to go to the bathroom so urgently I can’t make it to a toilet (I can’t believe I am saying that publicly it’s so embarrassing). I don’t know what else to do at this point.
I have flareups where I have urgent need to go to the bathroom. I take a low-dose of diphenoxylate-atrop prescribed by my doctor which helps with my worse symptom diarrhea.
My IBS-D began with my first period . It’s a dibilitating condition . Diet has been the only relief I’ve had. I think you might be on to something with fibromyalgia theory . I also have esophageal spasms and rectal spasms . Thank you for making me know I’m not a mental case- no one in my family has IBS ?
You are normal, I have IBSD and life is never the same as when i was a teenager. My life choices and career choices has been ruined due to IBSD. And i am the only one in my family with IBSD.
I feel good when I visit few specific towns... I've noticed I can eat n feel good which I usually cannot in the same born n brought up town. I think atmosphere helps some sort, I'm not saying 100% cure but it makes sense.
This was a great talk. Educated me on my problem, that I 've been struggling with on and off for a couple of years. I used peppermint oil, and I was much better, the stopped using it, and ibs got worse. Hoping I can get it under control again with the peppermint oil.
Thanks alot. This cleared so many doubts of mine. The presentation style was fantastic, each and every slide is founded on actualy research. I will stay reassured and try to develop positive attitude towards this condition of mine.
@@tanyasmith3346 I get massive pain in my left butt cheek and you tell doctors and they just act like its nothing or you get pain so bad in lower left of stomach and it don't even go away with a movement makes it worse really for a hr after.

Thank you so much. I was told I have IBS and not told anything else. This is so helpful. I now have things I can do to help control it. I do intend to see a Doctor. First I will apply the things I learned to see if it is controlled. I will keep doing what I have learned and if necessary still see a Doctor that specializes in this disease.

stress...it’s stress stress stress. I can’t stress this enough, but I believe that stress is the main cause of IBS. somebody needs to do neurological tests and dig deep into this, it’s not diet, it’s not exercise. IT’S STRESS
Just because "it doesn't turn in to anything" doesn't mean it isn't just as destructive. Treatments may have become extensive, but they have not become effective. Too many doctors are simply prescribing anti spasmodics and telling people to eat or take fiber supplements and this does not get people back onto a healthy path. I fail to understand how people who lose 30-40 pounds and walk around weighing 85 pounds or less are not immediately admitted to a hospital for supplemental nutrition, but they are not, they are sent home to suffer on their own or along with the families trying to take care of them. Can you imagine feeling that you have no hope, no healthy food options and being so low of energy that you couldn't help yourself if you wanted to? Can you imagine the fear of whether or not you would come out of this situation? This is what happens when doctors don't take this "syndrome" seriously. I'm on year 16 trying to help a loved one figure this thing out. Every city needs an IBS clinic and nutritionists, as well as gastro's who are well versed in the business of IBS that can be on call 24/7 for people.
Good Lecture. I am suffering from IBS since 10 years and I visited many doctors but the symptoms never reduced. Please suggest me medications. I am 28 years old now and i am frustrated with this.
We do not give individual medical advice, I will add our IBS page and you can look at the treatment options available and discuss them with your doctor or local pharmacist. It's important to note that the management of IBS is more than medication and can take time to find the right balance for each person. badgut.org/information-centre/a-z-digestive-topics/ibs/
Thank you! Amazing presentation! All my questions have been answered. As a woman, living with brain Cancer, I believe that IBS began then, but I know have the logic and medical suggestions as to how to fix the silly bumpy road. It will be my 25th Cancer-Versary in July and IBS is the least of my worries! Mind you, thanks to the Surgeon I saw yesterday who told me I have IBS...I am grateful for his and your compassion, knowledge, guidance and most of all laughter! Have a "Magical" day!
My IBS started one year after I finished my Breaat cancer treatment.I was told the lining in my gut may have been eroded by Chemo drugs. Endoscopy ,Left colonoscopy and PETMRI are all clear. Doctor You have broken down the IBS story so well. For Me there are certain foods that trigger it .I have quiet seasons until I forget and begin to be careless on my diet then boom INS starts.

My bowls started acting up after I had treatment for leukaemia, and as I get older they are getting worse and worse and I struggle to live with it. More and more foods are becoming triggers.
I get extremely nauseous for days when I have a diarrhea morning. Sometimes I have constipation and no nauseous. I'm also hypothyroid as well. Extremely frustrating!!
I have celiac disease, ibs, severe food allergies and one neurodegenerative disease which affects my intestine. I was missdiagnosed with all of the three that I mentioned up above. What a shame
My theory is that more women have IBS than men is that our bowels, like children are more delicate and sensitive to foods which contain toxins from pesticides, sugar which is in 'everything, glyphosate. There was no bowel problems in my childhood days but many children have problems with their bowels, such as my grandchild. I've had IBS for over 30 years and I've always ate healthily. Nothing I received from doctors have helped me. Codeine helped with pain but constipation.
I have a mix of IBSD and IBSC. Thought it was cancer, but had that ruled out. Depending on my diet at the time, I shit 5 to 8 times a day and some days it's like 2 times a day. It legit depends on what I eat. I've noticed when I fast it almost resets. I did a water fast for 3 days and that was the best thing I've ever done for it. Alcohol kills my stomach along with coffee. If I watch what I eat I'm fine for the most part. Still when I get an attack... Lord it hurts and I have damn near no control over my bowels.
This was useful. I did got to the doctor earlier and all she said that I should just avoid dairy. I didn't understand why she just wanted me to diagnose myself. She didn't bother to send off for any blood tests. I don't understand why she just assumed that I should self diagnose myself. I have relations who are Jewish and I have an aunt who had bowel cancer. However, I think it is Lactose intolerant mainly but I am getting so much pain if I accidently eat something 'wrong' and I have had extremely painful cramps and sweating/fever. One time it was so bad I was told to go to hospital but I had no car to get there at night. I had it today, but with the sweating and fever it makes me feel afraid I will die of pain, even though IBS isn't supposed to be life threatening. I am going to the doctor in 2 weeks time and I hope that I can get some kind of test or medications if I have sudden cramps.
Im off to see the doctor tomorrow as ive had alot of symptoms of ibs, my late gran had ibs and my dad has ibs, i really cant wait any longer to see what is going on but i am convinced its ibs
There is test for motility disorders sips mark studies, and there's another test to see if it effects your stomach aswell but you have to go to a gastrologist. I know my whole life I dealt with not going for weeks at all to the point of nearly having obstructions and having to have part of my bowel removed because of infection. There is help but you have to keep going.there is a hugh part of the population that have motility disorders. Life is not normal when you go for weeks on end with no bathroom trips and so much pain.no amount of fiber, exercise or stress modifications work.Trust me I've been living with this for 45years. Fiber makes mine so much worse.
With first-hand experience, I can tell you the theory of hypersensitivity is wrong. But the link between IBS and fibromyalgia is interesting, because the same things that may cause fibromyalgia can cause IBS. One example is oxalate-rich food. If you’re sensitive to oxalates and eat much of food rich in them you may experience both IBS and fibromyalgia. Examples: spinach, potatos, rice, kiwis. Ditto for lectin-rich food, like grains and legumes. The problem is not hypersensitivity, but low capability to get rid of the toxins of these foods.
Affected by IBS for past 10 years. Solution - cook 1 cup of rice leave it for 8 hours. Add 2 cups of water and mix with cooked rice. Leave it over night. Drink the water every morning. Its been 6 months and i am out of my misery.
I’ve been really stressed and anxious because I’ve been having a lot of stomach problems lately. I keep thinking colon cancer but I’m only 20, thus stresses me out and makes my stomach issues worse. I hope that it’s nothing serious but this presentation helps me look at my symptoms differently.
I was diagnosed with peptic ulcer, IBS, and leaky gut. I suffer from severe nausea also. Thought it was my colon. Thoughts of cancer growing on me. I am a very stressful person. Would like to now what to eat. Going natural
@@juliagerwel2917 sorry to hear that, hope you’re doing good. I don’t really know much but google is your friend. What I can say is don’t think about cancer. PocksTech Rv i don’t really know, I have to get further tests done but this virus has made it difficult. It could be IBS, I’ve thought of that but I just need to go see a doc.
Its Part Mental health and Gut health get these two things checked,I had PTSD,Anxiety and depression,I did not know until it got to a point where I was suicidal, then was the time I got really sick and met a physicatrist and life started to get better , before a GP would prescribe ant biotics thinking it's a infected stomach. That killed my good bacteria then I was given my mental health meds and pro biotics which made me a new person, Today I own a business now have a family and own my own house and car.
at 54:50, I don't understand what is meant by situation diarrhea. I get it before going on a train or taxi and a few other places. I thought IBS was food triggered and not situationally triggered. I treat my thing as a phobia of being away from a toilet rather than IBS. I've totally gone the psych route! so confusing.
Absolutely, I think many of us suffer in this way. Anxiety is an integral part for sure and what you describe is an anxiety based on 'please just don't happen now. I have no plan or escape route to a bathroom', something I've said to myself 1000's of times and often feel like it can trigger it. I carry toilet roll and spare underwear in my car as a sort of insrance plan. I've never needed to use it, but it sort of ties in with your point. The physcological effects of this condition are an integral part of it for many of us I think. You are certainly not alone :)
My stools are the size of pencils. Then big ones then I can’t go. I’m constipated and strain mostly and I get chills when I wake up. My main problem is cramping lower ribs, painful bloating and distended and abdominal pain. Everyday this happens and several doctors can’t even help!!! It’s awful. And then about a year ago I started get totally exhausted and feel like I’m dying. And they sent me to a shrink and he gave me Paxell and then I really felt like I was dying. I’m living in hell with this cramping, bloating, and terrible pain and constipation is really bad and feeling run down and this very heavy malaise feeling.
I have similar symptoms, my doctor says I have low gut motility, I take antispasmodic for the cramping this also reduces my stress because I am not afraid to trigger the pain and otc dimethicone helps with the gas buildup. I am rehabilitating my gut with constipation exercises and if I really can’t go I take magnesium oxide, also sunshine and outdoor walking, at night a hot water bottle.
I always eat less than what I am hungry for. Very difficult to do on daily basis but have to. I am an Indian and following ayurveda tips of keeping gap of minimum 3 hours between 2 diets and not eating and raw food along with cooked food helped me a lot
I've had IBS and sibo for the last 5 years with all the symptoms but with no solutions from doctors. Now I have developed hyper salivation in my mouth. I went to see an oral surgeon and he basically told me I was exaggerating and it was all in my head. So now I guess I'm stuck with another problem.
It is a functional somatic disorder. Not to say its 100% psychological, but the evidence is pretty clear now that its around stress and pain centralization.
I have it and the gas is very, very bad to an embarrassing extent. The medication I take, Amitriptyline, seems to reduce to the pain yet the side effects have me like a 70 year old man in terms of my libido. Excellent video though!

Wow! This sounds just like me! I've lost about 8 pounds... 5'8 133 pounds. Which is fine but if I keep losing that's a problem. I am always hungry as well. Can't remember last time I was full.... I have eliminated so much food from my diet. I can eat oranges, konjac noodles, gf bread, corn flakes, cucumbers, spinach and eggs. I used to be able to have almond milk but no more. I've eliminated dairy, gluten, and soy for the last 5 years. It is getting worse w time and I'm scared of what will happen when I can't eat the foods I'm currently trying eating. 😫 it always happens just a matter of time.
Same here with hormone changes it seems. Also have an auto immune skin issue (Granuloma Annulare) that has become greatly inflamed with my IBS flare up this past month. Crazy.

Thank you sir , for actual information. Educating sufferers make them aware of management.
I felt this meeting on IBS was so informative and interesting. I learned so much. It is comforting to hear all the facts and suggestions that were offered. Thank you again for your expertise.
Awesome lecture - very comprehensive and thoroughly researched covers almost all IBS problems. Love it.
Thank you for watching!
Please we need to find exact cause and solution for this ..
When I eat less in general and less frequently, it helps my symptoms, too.
This is so comprehensive. I finally got diagnosed with ibs triggered by stress and also secondary by some food triggered. Thank you so much
Glad the video helped, thank you for watching!

I think that's what I have too. its very linked to stress for me, not food.
That's helpful, thanks!
😮
I get how you feel, I have IBSD as well. Life has never been the same. I avoid social functions and food. I dont drink much water or take sugary food. I dont take gluten or dairy as well. I would happily take IBSC (Constipation) over IBSD (Diarrhea).

My experience: I've had IBS for at least 20 yrs. Bouts that last from several days to several months.
Having a bad time right now-everything giving me D. Eating soft, low residue foods helping a bit.
I noticed the intensity and symptoms have changed
since I aged...painful gas and nausea.
Thank you soooo much
Tripped over this on UTube...if only I had heard this information before. I feel soo much relief.

Indeed! 🥺
It is not,U get symptoms when stressed because your nerves r irritated in ibs and miscommunicate with brain
Amen

Good video. I blame all the alchole and energy drinks I consumed last year. I can't stop going!!!
Vulgar language! Totally unnecessary.

I have IBS 8 years. You said it goes away. I hope it happens soon. Still suffering now and then.
Kindly reply which all symptoms of IBS could be managed by drinking the overnight kept rice water in the morning.

Absolutely, I think many of us suffer in this way. Anxiety is an integral part for sure and what you describe is an anxiety based on 'please just don't happen now. I have no plan or escape route to a bathroom', something I've said to myself 1000's of times and often feel like it can trigger it. I have similar symptoms, my doctor says I have low gut motility, I take antispasmodic for the cramping this also reduces my stress because I am not afraid to trigger the pain and otc dimethicone helps with the gas buildup.
