I used to worked for the agency that represented them back in the 70's and they played the Roxy in LA and we all went to the shows. They were amazing in person. Those were fun days. Great talent back then.
I don't know how she does that... but she sounds like a sax...that can sing, and she's still doing it, every bit as well as she always has, the harmony and blend of voices is just great.
brilliant! perfect voice..and so obnoxous (in a great way).....love this song and she does it just as good live....they are REAL performers...no autotune there..
Very interesting that this was on OGWT. I associate it more in this era with Prog Rock and New Wave but in their own way TMT are quite innovative in their "curatorial" approach to repertoire, and the ease with which they moved between genres. They will be rediscovered in a big way one day, because the sheer quality of the musicianship and performance.
the first time I heard this song it blew me away. I felt like something had been missing in my life! MT is fantastic. Wish I could find this, Baby come back, clap your hands and boy frm New your city on the same CD. Any one know which one?
Some people seem to think this is Laurel Masse singing lead. It's Janis Siegel. Laurel's on BVs. Great performance anyway! How about a DVD release of this entire Old Grey Whistle Test concert?
Oh wow, my friend sang this song at my school, and honestly, she was much much better. Her voice was like one octave higher, so maybe that's why. And omg, the high notes that she hit were so crystal, it was amazing.
This is just the best jazz+funk song in the world!!! If someone got some good music tips for e please contact me!!!! I listen to allmost everything, just NOT rock, metal, tecno etc...!
Even though this is considered a "spiritual" song, there is no way this song could be sung at a Catholic mass. Only songs that have been approved to be included in the Missal can be sung. That being said, the fact that this particular performer has the same name as me is worth 1000 points alone!!! BTW-For those of you who are old enough, this is a GREAT song to do "the bump" to. I would recommend you do it to the single.
Slightly campy, but then they sing...... are there four voices anywhere in their class?? I doubt it. Besides the shorter girl was just so darn cute......
Powerhouse voice! I've loved MT since I was a kid. Gosh, they're wonderful.
Always loved Manhattan Transfer - great to see them performing on BBC 4 last night - especially love Janis vocals on this!
Great performance
What a vocalist ,what a performance and what a song ... this ROCKS !!!

I love Cheryl Betyne! (I'm from Washington State.) However, I appreciate Laurel's silky, sultry tones. It's a different flavor.
This sounds just a fresh as it did when I first heard it years ago. So glad they decided to record this. Thanks for posting!
Absolutely their best song!

I don't know how she does that... but she sounds like a sax...that can sing, and she's still doing it, every bit as well as she always has, the harmony and blend of voices is just great.
I led this song in show choir in high school!!!!!!!!!!!

That little lady is better than Janis Joplin.
ohh did i dance to this ,
They don't make them like this anymore
Oh come on, they are world stars, can go on tour whenever they want and get sold out halls. In the end quality makes it!
This is just the best jazz+funk song in the world!!!

@Mangafoxlover101
Well, if you're going to do a solo, make sure you know the words. For this song, I'd say that's ESPECIALLY true.
Is this version recorded on a DVD?
jesus. she was MT
Slightly campy, but then they sing...... are there four voices anywhere in their class?? I doubt it. Besides the shorter girl was just so darn cute......
as a person who doesn't6 attend a church or such, i do not think that someone who sings with joy in their voice "jesus" would not mnd.
Well ... Jesus did pay the bill ... and the price was HUGE!
Janis looks much better in a slit skirt than Angelina Jolie.
I've had a crush on her for over 40 years.
