Manhattan Transfer - Johnny Carson - Heart's-Unchained- 1982

- I've actually found 3 Johnny Carson show segments where the group appeared. This is the second one which features Heart's Desire and Unchained Melody. Like the first tape, this is a 20+ year old VHS-EP speed done over the air on a mono-recorder. I believe it was 1982, possibly 1983. Tweaked the sound a bit different than the first segment I posted and I believe I brought the voices out a bit better. It won't win any rewards for audio restoration, but trust me, it's better than it was :)

Saw them in Lake Tahoe in 1970s..
Outstanding.
R.I.P. Tim
RIP, Tim Hauser aka, Eldorado Caddy !
This fine fine group are remarkable, sound wise and visually, 10 **********'s
I've always loved the Manhattan Transfer, and "Heart's Desire" is such a stunning example of their energy, enthusiasm, and ability to join all sorts of crazy dimensions of their talents together. I love Janis and Alan -- Alan just jumps with energy. I sure do miss Laurel Massie. Love Scotch and Soda so much and miss her singing it. Thanks for picking Hearts Desire!
Love you, Cheryl ! --------------------RIP, Tim Hauser---------------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o
Cheryl was a fantastic find--& what a voice! One of my all-time favorites by this fantastic group!! RIP, Tim ! Wolfsky9
Love it when Cheryl Bentyne handled the incident just in time before that great ending. What a pro!
Thanks for sharing.
The mic save was live performance at its best
The incident with the mic cable actually happened to Janis Siegel. Cheryl is in the blue dress. But, you are right. Janis handled it like the pro she was and still is.
Cheryl is the blonde standing between Alan Paul and Tim Hauser; Cheryl joined the Manhattan Transfer in late 1978 when they needed a replacement for Laurel Masse following Laurel's automobile accident.
Go look at their bios & photos. Bentyne is in the yellow dress. Siegel is the short one on the left between Hauser & Paul
Cheryl is a redhead.
Cheryl, no one --I mean, NO ONE---has ever done this like you and the group! Simply awesome!! I saw them do this in "82, " Bop Doo Wop " tour. Wolfsky9
The Manhattan transfer is the best that I ever
I was there that night! It was 1983! How great to see this again! Thank you for posting!!
When the mic disconnects at 2:59 and the other three notice and hold their note just a *little* longer till she gets the thing reconnected...
What a save!! at 3:10 the mic cord falls out--and she grabs it and..puts back in nicely...oh man
Tim Hauser...what a great man!!
great to see old video of them, been a fan since the 70's
wow .wow wow...i love this band!
one great group !!!
Their music reminds me of the doo wop music when I went to teen club back in the 50's and did the slow dance called the bounce. Where have the years gone. They are off-the-charts fantastic.
Iris - Feisty Mom
my all time favorite MT song : heart's desire.
A tribute to this awesome group. A NIGHTINGALE SANG IN BERKELEY SQUARE
I’ll never forget them walking out on the small stage at the bottom line, dressed to the nines and performing tuxedo junction. Their style and their music had the room charged up. Followed them until they went jazz. I believe they were helped along with their success by none other than bill Hennessy, the man responsible for the divine miss m, ellen Greene, Gotham.
Cheryl's ability to hit that really high note reminds me of the woman who sang with Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners I think her name was Janet.
Sir ----------------Yes, Janet Vogel. -----------------------WolfSky9
Hard to believe how long ago this happened smh
What a genious, the microphone have been diconected before the final and she conected and continuous(as if nothing had happened) Cheryl great singer!!!
thie best is when the re-create the original vocal arrangement from the orginal recording. their was the MAGIC
I agree with everyone that Cheryl freakin awesome but Janis is the one that I have always wanted!! Grrrrr Baby!
Ohhhhh Cheryl !! -------------------------WolfSky9
Vito & The Salutations did " Unchained Melody " --------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o
It's been 35 years since Laurel Masse left Manhattan Transfer. When are some of you going to get over it? Cheryl Bentyne is wonderful. End of story.
No, but after 35 years you'd think people might pull the plug on the Laurel Masse issue.
the mic cord was pretty funny..time for her big final note and the cord comes out! way for her to think on her feet....
wonder if the stagehands union filed a grievance when she plugged in her own mike
I always confused them with the Manheim Steamroller..Manhattan Transfer Steamroller is what I used to call them
I am laughing at that!
Yepprd Thats just dumb.
Robin Lytton Not is dumb, was dumb when I was a tot.
my hearts desire would be to see this...MT doing a version of Unchained Melody, just like ShaNaNa ! b nora
What happened to your Carson clip with Tuxedo Junction and You Can Depend on Me? Did RUclips copyright claim it?
I haven't really checked on these much for some time. Most likely, but I haven't gotten any recent notices from them. Many years ago I did get notice on a couple of the clips.
Sorry, I had the song wrong. It was the Carson clip with "Trickle, Trickle."
@@FKLinguista not sure what the issue is, I just started it up ok.
Oh, really? Hmm... Maybe RUclips blocked it in the country I'm in now (Burma). Last time I watched it was maybe in 2007, back when I was still in the U.S. Thanks for checking!
@@FKLinguista no problem. That's a good possibility regarding access.
Thank you but I like the album version better, can you please post that, I’ve been looking for it everywhere can’t find it.
There are at least 2 album versions. One with Laurel Masse (not Cheryl) from their debut album in 1975 and the other with Cheryl on Bop Doo-Wopp. This is the only video I have (had) of it, I haven't actively posted new stuff in quite a while. If you're looking for the song itself, you can checkout if either of these albums contain the rendition you're looking for.
spockster59 I only owned the album with the black and white cover with their silhouettes. That is the version I am looking for. Thank you for getting back to me. I thought I could buy the album On iTunes. But I couldn’t find it.
That is the debut album with Laurel, simply titled The Manhattan Transfer. I can't speak for iTunes but I know it is available on Google Play Music and Amazon ( www.amazon.com/Manhattan-Transfer/dp/B073K23698/ )
spockster59 I never bought music on Amazon, I can download music from Amazon onto my iPad? I’m going to definitely check it out right now. Thank you
I hope it works out for you! Should be able to load it up on an iPad but I don't own any Apple products so can't really guide you there.
make it louder.
That would be Laurel Masse
Wow... You folks are really the Thumbers.
57fuzzypink:
The really funny thing here is the sycophant nonsense.
Personally I like both Cheryl and Laurel... but it seems some folks in here need to think their favorite singer is the "Best..." rather than just someone they like better.
I remember people doing this in Grammar School.
All I'm doing is defending myself against a certain lying sycophant.
unclealand:
Oh stop the nonlinear irrelevant blarney.
I enjoy the fact that you and yours are so externally validated in your opinions. It's so fun to watch.
And speaking of "help..." you might wanna check with your therapist about your specific delusion, hon.
You've "moved on?" Not likely... especially with you and your sock puppets Thumbing away like crazy.
I figured I'd check back here after the weekend... and I am completely amazed at you little thumbers... disappointed too.
If someone isn't particularly enamored of the same singers as you appreciate... then you act like Grammar School Children.
If someone is thumbed Down enough, their comments don't appear here.
I wonder if you guys would like it if people marked you guys as spam?
I guess The whole Free Speech thing doesn't apply to the Manhattan Transfer?
unclealand:
What "issue?" That she sings nice?
Wowza... I am amazed that a comment as innocent as mine was Thumbed into Hell.
Insecure? Sycophants? Loonies?
Kinda crazy.
I am convinced that is the cast of Gilligans island
Right idea, wrong show. :) They actually did a parody of I Love Lucy with Janis as Ethel, Tim as Fred, Alan as Ricky and, of course, Cheryl as Lucy when they did a video for Blee Blop Blues.
LaurelStevens:
I'm curious why you make inane nonlinear comments, reacting without actually paying attention to what you are commenting about? Did you join a month ago just to say silly things?
Please tell me which of my "things" you think were negative?
xo
Poor sound quality
unclealand:
I don't think anyone here said Cheryl wasn't wonderful.
I love Cheryl's version, but IMO, Laurel Masse's is much better.
Hey Blue:
I just noticed that anyone who likes Laurel's version (like you and me) was Thumbed Down on this thread... sheeesh... Talk about taking it personally. Sigh.
KataVideo:
I almost pissed myself. Hehe...
Excuse me while I clean up.
Isn't this 50's style music? They are good but it feels like a group that would play opposite Elvis in Vegas.
They're terrific; the recording sux.
Yea, I do discuss that in my note ...
