The building on the corner was Hayden Drug. It was a cool store that had a variety of items, full service pharmacy as well as a fountain where we used to go for ice cream or sodas. The Police Department used to be Valley Bank. Across the street from it was Polly's Department Store that sold clothing, shoes, work clothes and material. Hayden at one time in the late 1950's was a thriving little town. Across from the drug store was Hayden Grocery that had a real butcher shop/meat counter. There was a theater- The Rex, where everyone went to the movies- all double feature. It was one of the buildings that burned.
Hi Sandra, Thank you for sharing all that great information. It sounds like an Arizona version of Mayberry🙂 It had that feel while was walking down main street. Thank again have a wonderful week!
Aaahhh....got my Arizona fix. Love that country! As a young bride I wanted to move to Hayden. I thought it was so cool. My husband thought I was crazy. Thank you Randy.
I was born in Ray, Az. in Sept. 1942 and lived in Hayden, so I lived in Hayden from Sept 1942 to 1961 when I went into the Navy. Came back in 1969 and stayed in Hayden until Dec. 1978 and Moved out into Dudleyville Az. across the river in Pinal County south of Winkelman. My Grandfather owned the Pool Hall that was in the same building as the Drug store. He came to Hayden in 1909.
Hi Denkiiy, Thank you for sharing that info. I always appreciate hearing from someone that has ties with places I travel. Thanks again and have a wonderful day!
I grew up in Hayden from '62 to 75. Graduated from. Hayden High. Went to church in the cool Pink Church. Was a lifeguard at the town pool. Lotz of great memories.
Randy, thank you for another awesome video. Also just watched C.C. Cragin Reservoir from 9 months ago, awesome too! Which brought to my attention there are a handful of your videos I've not yet seen. Looking forward to watching these. See ya later.
Hi Cardscarl, That was one of my first ones 😂It's not so crowded in the fall when water is too cold for the paddle boarders. I still have much to learn but enjoy it. Have a great week and we'll see ya later.
Another fun trip into small town Arizona and seriously I've seen more greenery in your videos than I ever saw running around on my own 😂😂😂😂😂 As always thanks for taking us along and see you next time.....
Some of the area you film that you thought was Hayden was actually the town of San Pedro. Which was the other side of tracks from Hayden so to speak. The money, the management of kennicott copper and some extent ASARCO lived in Hayden back in the day, and people who worked for Kennicott who had brown skin lived in San Pedro. Once Kearny was built the money moved to Kearny. There is also a demarcation if you work for kennicott versus asarco. Kennicott ruled the roost, but kennicott is now long gone.... ASARCO is nothing what it once was .. ASARCO, back when it was actually the American smelting and refining company... Was considered top class, a cut above... But that's long ago as well. It is now owned for many years by grupo Mexico and they're slowly bleeding it dry.
There is a very cool, very old bridge in Winkelman that also crosses the Gila River that has been closed to motor vehicle traffic for many years but well worth checking out.
Hi Francine, Hayden is an interesting place to visit. I am alway amazed to hear from viewers that have lived in these historic places. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!
I only recently discovered your channel and this is the second video I'm enjoying you do a very good job. I looked up Hayden on Wikipedia while I'm watching your video and it looks like the area is so polluted that people are moving out I would love to live in an area like that but I would hate to be poisoned
Hi Gina, Welcome to the channel! It's true, they had a lot of stuff going on with pollution and caused quite a bit of problems. Hopefully it's getting better and can make a comeback. Thank you for the kind words and have a great week!
Eat at that restaurant 30 years ago. I was visiting the grave site of a college roommate. He died in a motorcycle accident when he was 21 in Tempe Az. I still remember the funeral at the cemetery of either Hayden or Winkleman. He grew up in the area and attended HS in kerny. .
Hi Dan, It's always sad to hear when someone that young passes. It's an interesting part of Arizona that has been fun exploring. Thanks for sharing and have a great week!
Back in the day... The building that is now the police department was a Valley National Bank. The desert around Hayden - Winkleman is gorgeous.... Edit, so the building that you thought was a drugstore was indeed a drugstore, was built as such and I can remember when it had a old style "soda fountain" Across the street the building with the awning you though had been a saloon... Restaurant... Indeed it was for many years, called the Bull Pen. I washed a lot of dishes there... The building next to it Casa whatever .. was a western clothing store and JCPenney catalog store. Further down the road and I believe it was one of the buildings burnt down was the Rex movie theater. Had a stage and orchestra pit as well as a balcony it wasn't a Fox or anything of that nature, but it was nice in its day. . By the time I got to go to it.. it was said when you go to the Rex you took two sticks.... One to hold the seat up the other to beat the rats. I could go on and on........ One more little tidbit there by what is now the police station, (Valley National Bank... It had the cool VNB Eagle sign) ... And when you came in Where H-A-Y-D-E-N is spelled out... There was a sign for proclaiming Hayden Arizona voted Life magazines best number one small town in America... 1958. The signs seem really dated by 1970.... I think those signs stayed in place into the mid-80s. Winkelman by the way is much older than Hayden and has a very colorful history.... I remember jumping in the Gila around Winkleman flats, and those who know understand what I'm speaking of... And tubing The Gila all the way down to Kearny or if you want to do a full day of it and I mean full day... All the way down to Kelvin / Riverside to that bridge. By the way, I've never heard that called the Kearny bridge before. But things change and perhaps it is now.
Last post.... Maybe. On 77 right outside of Winkleman, just past the slag dump .... And yes you could feel the heat driving by when the slag was dumped... I loved watching it at night as a kid... And still would as an adult... Anyway... As you enter the Gila Canyon, which is beautiful.... if you look up about 200 ft you will see the old 77...... Yep that is the old road hanging on the side of the canyon walls.... Much of it is still intact, for several miles into the canyon .... Up to about Christmas mine ...Well as of 20 years ago it was... including asphalt and road signs... And there's fossils up there.... There's also a half dozen 1930 vintage cars hanging off the side on cables to secure them.... It's a very cool hike that very very few people know about... It is not easy to get to.... Thankfully. Okay and one more thing... Winkleman had a Chevy dealership, and Kearny had a Ford dealership.... Also I'm almost positive that last burned out building kind of close to the what is now the Hayden police department... I'm pretty sure that's the old Rex movie theater.
Hi Charley, I knew I could count on someone that had history there. Thank you for sharing all that wonderful information and history for others to see. I did film Winkleman but wanted to get more and put it into another video to do it justice. The area on the river where tubers are was pretty full. BTW If I called it the Kearny bridge I meant to say Kelvin bridge. 🙂Thanks again and have a great week.
In all the years spent in AZ, i never got to that area. I really like that type of country. Have you been to Bagdad? That's pretty interesting too. Had a friend who was a supervisor in the mine, when we did work down there he'd get us a tour all the way down in the pit. AWESOME. Good job.
Hi Dave, Honestly, I'm not sure what it was used for. It's right next to the slag heap of a mine that is still active. In fact it leads to the turn to get to the mine. It was probably the old bridge for the highway back in the day. Sorry I could give you any more info about it. Thanks for sharing and have a great week!

Grew up there and graduated in 1980. The two copper mines used to pay county taxes and we had new uniforms for all sports, an Olympic swimming pool, state of the art high school. People would commute from Phoenix and Tucson to work in the mines. I was told when the taller smoke stack came, it was the third tallest in the world at the time. Great memories.
I believe that many people find that bridge, beautiful and peaceful. Doesn’t new bridge have signs saying you still have hope and the suicide phone number all over it.

@@SeabeeTravelerThe drugstore sign would have said REXALL DRUGS. That was a popular drugstore chain back in the day

I used to work in Hayden for asnr copper in 19 77
Just beyond the pit (or currently part of…) was the town of Ray. My grandmother was born there. She later moved to Hayden and finally Winkelman.
