I was born too late to get into that era of wrestling but I've heard from family members how popular it was back then. I did get to witness Haystacks short run in WCW but that obviously . The wrestling I grew up on was very different from the old British style of pro wrestling but when you strip everything down to the basics it's pretty much the same. Somebody the fans hate fighting against somebody the fans love. Pro wrestling when done well is as close to modern day theatre as it gets but with the sports aspect included. I miss the days when wrestling was genuinely captivating and unmissable
@@musicuniverse1356 Yeah, sadly he had cancer so never got a proper chance at fulfilling his potential in the USA. I grew up hearing older family members talk about Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy but at the time when I saw Loch Ness I never knew he was Giant Haystacks. I found out soon after as I got a little older. I wish I was around when British wrestling was popular because it sounds like everybody watched it and really got involved but I have to confess that when I was a teenager during the attitude era watching WWF every day I remember watching some old footage of world of sport and being pretty disappointed/underwhelmed 😅 That is understandable though considering that I was used to seeing guys thrown off of cells and split wide open with sledgehammers and now I'm watching two obese men giving each other armbars and chops for twenty minutes 😅 Fortunately I went on to appreciate British wrestling and eventually understood why it became popular and why it is beloved to this very day.

Haystacks is right, British wrestling is the best and still is today IMO. Even if you just watch WWE the NXT UK brand more often then not has the best matches. It was shame ITV discontinued wrestling from it's coverage it really was an institution. Grannies and wrestling that was huge thing back in the day as well, my Nan really got into every match cheering on the likes of Big Daddy.
Well, no. They brought him over with the INTENTION of feuding him with Hogan, but typical WCW at the time they signed him and flew him over without knowing just how bad his physical condition was. He was almost completely immobile so they jobbed him out quickly, turned him face and cancelled his contract.

Never met drew but hear so many good things about him from my friend ricky Knight. Must of been such a nice guy.
@@71canaries He was indeed Hayden, and such a character - always spoke his mind. But he was so passionate about the squared circle, had wrestled all over the world and was talent scout for WWE of course. I didn’t know how he was ever going to retire, he loved it so much. But in the end he got stomach cancer - as did Pat Roach and Haystacks. Wonder if it’s the blows to the stomach they received were to blame.
My favorite heel back in the day of Saturday afternoon wrestling on itv when I was a kid RIP Giant haystacks 😢
Certainly seemed to be a gentleman and a gentle giant.
A proper folk hero from my childhood. Sorely missed.
Spent many Saturday afternoon cheering big daddy giant haystacks on as a 8 year old in 1978 much more entertaining than todays rubbish. Rip and of coarse mick mcmanus.
They call him sir constantly cause they know one wrong word and he gonna kick ass
Exactly that! He could switch anytime! 😂
giant haystacks proper legend
When Mike "Z-grade interviewer" Morris said he was trying to make him angry, i'm sure Ruane was thinking "you've been succeeding from the moment i sat here"
He was a great guy and always had time for the kids at the events
this is amazing LMAO 😆 Thank you for uploading
Lovely man loved watching jim❤
I was born too late to get into that era of wrestling but I've heard from family members how popular it was back then. I did get to witness Haystacks short run in WCW but that obviously .
The wrestling I grew up on was very different from the old British style of pro wrestling but when you strip everything down to the basics it's pretty much the same. Somebody the fans hate fighting against somebody the fans love. Pro wrestling when done well is as close to modern day theatre as it gets but with the sports aspect included. I miss the days when wrestling was genuinely captivating and unmissable
Me too. I saw him as Loch Ness in WCW. I remember how huge he was in the ring. Apparently, he became ill and it cut his time in WCW short.
I wish I was around when British wrestling was popular because it sounds like everybody watched it and really got involved but I have to confess that when I was a teenager during the attitude era watching WWF every day I remember watching some old footage of world of sport and being pretty disappointed/underwhelmed 😅
That is understandable though considering that I was used to seeing guys thrown off of cells and split wide open with sledgehammers and now I'm watching two obese men giving each other armbars and chops for twenty minutes 😅
Fortunately I went on to appreciate British wrestling and eventually understood why it became popular and why it is beloved to this very day.
Friday nights back in the 70’s, sleeping at my grans house with my brother and sister, we’d watch the wrestling on a Saturday after Tiswas and Swap Shop, Bagpuss, The Clangers and great stuff . Ah those were the days.
HAD MANY HAPPY TIMES WATCHING BRITISH WRESTLING
My father met Haystacks in a pub here in Ireland. ( apparently he was really born in Kiltimagh in Co Mayo) He was a true beast of a wrestler and I hate how disrespectful the presenters are🙄
@dog Johnson I don't think so
@matskigudjohnson Well he'd have gotten better respect on an Irish show
Giant Haystacks was born as Martin Austin Ruane in Camberwell, London on 10th of October 1946, his father was born in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo.
Him and big daddy, watching British wrestling as a kid was great.
At 6'11", 686 lbs., Giant Haystacks was actually larger than Andre the Giant (overall). Andre was 7 feet even (peak), and his weight never exceeded 550 lbs.
Im not into big men 🤔
A really nice guy and a gentleman RIP Giant🐒🐻🤗👍
Haystacks is right, British wrestling is the best and still is today IMO. Even if you just watch WWE the NXT UK brand more often then not has the best matches.
It was shame ITV discontinued wrestling from it's coverage it really was an institution. Grannies and wrestling that was huge thing back in the day as well, my Nan really got into every match cheering on the likes of Big Daddy.
4 years later he went to WCW as Loch Ness and feuded with hulk hogan.
Well I didn't know that.
& big show
Well not really not like they had a match or nothing
@@adamjohn2795 Yeh he faced the giant instead but that match was terrible, not to speak ill of the dead
Well, no. They brought him over with the INTENTION of feuding him with Hogan, but typical WCW at the time they signed him and flew him over without knowing just how bad his physical condition was. He was almost completely immobile so they jobbed him out quickly, turned him face and cancelled his contract.
Giant Haystacks and Mike Morris have long passed away .RIP🙏🙏🙏
Superstitious graffiti totally unnecessary here 😑
Mr Haystacks was the door man at the Jamaican Clubs in Manchester in the 60s/70s
I never knew that, just a lovely bloke.
Thought he did really well not to hand out a couple of slaps. Was almost like a ritual to watch the Wrestling followed by World of Sport as a kid.
Proper Idol !,love the guy ,rip
Strange homosexual comment
No,I just loved the wrestling as a kid,Thanks for making me laugh,Keyboard warrior 😂
Real name Martin Ruane
Rest in Peace
He truly was a gentle giant out of the ring he's taken on many other giants in his career against The Giant,André The Giant,Kamala, One Man Gang, and Big Cat Ernie Ladd and he was so respected the interviewer called him "Sir" on more than one occasion truly a legend of the business ✌🏾🤘🏾👍🏾🇬🇧
I didn’t know he’d faced One Man Gang and Kamala- wonder if there’s footage?
He's taken out nobody. Every match is scripted. It's not a sport it's an act, just for entertainment, totally scripted and choreographed.
@@PreservationEnthusiast okay you're point you dumbfuk
@@PreservationEnthusiast Oh, amazing you are.
@@riboid Yes I'm amazing. Are you amazing?!
Giant Haystacks was a nasty piece of work, but Martin Ruane was one of the nicest, kindest gentlest people you could ever meet.
Wut?
@@RAMROD1847 The character vs the real man.
@@_Piers_ is your second name morgan?
What a beast of a man. Used to piss myself watching big daddy bounce of him
I think you have to remember back then people thought wrestling was real the wrestlers lived their character at all times
