Umineko can just be summarized as: read the goddamn visual novel instead
You won't regret it
Considering what's coming (with a proper dub, no less), I can agree with you.
And get the ps3 sprites for the love of god the pc ones are horrible
Just finished episode 3 and my heart is broken
@@nerofiorentino1971 because of this series I cann't sleep for a month
ACTUALLY! I found the VN really interesting but overly long and complicated and i mean REALLY long and complicated. There is this really great plot thread within the game (that is actually its core element that started the entire story) but it's burried underneath so many other plot threads you're tired and frustrated when you finally get to it. And even then it does explain you NOTHING. Is Beatrice real? Is she five people at the same time? If so than doesn't it make her relationship with Buttler really awkward? Is Sayo really that crucial to the story besides that one plot twist? And the most important one: Can you adapt a story with a complex LGBT character without turning them into yet another trap fetish?
The reason this show pisses people off is not only because it's a total mess, but because it's a terrible adaptation of a FANTASTIC visual novel. The disservice this anime did to the VN makes many (myself included) really disappointed.
OMFG YES THE VISUAL NOVEL IS A MASTERPIECE
The VN is indeed a nearly perfect work of art, and each and every question Arcada asks is answered in it. Now, I won't say the adaptation was necessarily 'bad'; what I've of it is actually quite accurate. But it stopped too early! So you never get to see what the real context of Battler's and Beatrice's games. Just imagine if the Higurashi anime had stopped at the middle, right at the end of the 4th arc (Himatsubushi-hen), after the introduction of Akasaka. Now, would the Higurashi anime be worth watching? Of course NOT! It would be a story full of strage events without rhyme or reason and no context for what is REALLY going on. Well, that is what happened with the Umineko anime. And that's a damn shame.
I guess im asking randomly but does anybody know of a method to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost the account password. I love any tricks you can give me!
@Marcelo Maxton instablaster :)
@Jimmy Layne I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Umineko's visual novel is just as good, if not better than Higurashi's. It's a shame that the anime is such a rushed, plot hole filled mess that takes a visual novel series much longer than Higurashi and attempts to cram it down into the same length.
Not to mention that the anime isn't finished, nor should it be given the quality of the first section they produced.
longliverocknroll5
You might as well had a big budget and went for Ufotable if you wanted a good adaptation.
zhaoyun255
THE GRADIENTS!!
Busterhero
GRANDIOS!!!
zhaoyun255 ufotable might have done a good job for the action scenes, but like arkada said, there is a lot of talking involved, which is why it should have remained a vn.
It's so sad that people dislike Umineko because of the anime, while it is one of the most, if not the most, well written Visual Novel out of there.
my main issues with umineko is that there is so much shit out for umineko idk where to start. there is even a FUCKING FIGHTING GAME
@@Scyclo It's Golden Showtime!, In reality the game is not important, lowkey the VN is all you need
@Gabe oh but I do play tuhu my fav tuhu is Shikieiki Yamaxanadu
@Splash2X7023 well, it's from Higurashi's author after all
@Splash2X cof*cof* Ciconia no naku koro ni cof*
The opening was better than the show.
Daniel Rogers ^^This
I feel the same sentiment can be said about Mirai Nikki's music, but that's just personal opinion. Umineko's OP is probably my all time favorite for the music alone.
GRArkada And there is a direct relation between the visual novels, one of the endings of Higurashi has the whole thing being instigated by witches as a battle. why do you think that Rika looks like Berkenstal and Takano's younger self looks like that other witch.
GRArkada As Ditto said, Rika/Bernkastel was trapped by the other witch in the realm of Hinamizawa to suffer the same fate over and over again in Higurashi.
Applejuiceisxxx Which might explain why Rika never liked Takano.
What probably needs to be said is that the Umineko visual novel is the greatest thing ever. Of all time. You should all go read it because it's fucking amazing.
+TheKazragore PREACH!
+TheKazragore But it's a Sound Novel though.
+TheKazragore So, in that sense, is it actually better than Higurashi? Plus, I don't care much for visual novels, mostly because I have no idea how to get it and my laptop sucks, but has the manga adaptation been completed?
+Wilhelm Dietz The Umineko story beats Higurashi hands down, no contest. Which isn't to say Higurashi is bad, Umineko is just THAT GOOD. You can find everything you need here: uminekofix.wikia.com/wiki/Downloads

Good description!!
Rudolph and Kyrie get a LOT of screentime in Chiru. You know, the second half?
....oh. Right. They didnt adapt it :/
Despite their role in the story becoming more important, they still don't get much charactarization compared to Natsushi, Eva or Rosa. I'd say Kraus (and of course, Hidyashi) get shifted even worse though
@@WorthlessWinner don't know man, of course eva/natsuhi/rosa get a lot of development, but even with less screen time most of the cast gets still enough depth to be memorable enough.
I mean, I still remember all their names, I couldn't tell you the name of three people from my high school class outside my small circle of friends
Id recommend everyone to read the VN, it truly has changed me in numerous ways.
For those reading this in the future you can DL the VN here.
nyaa.si/view/1208632
Just be sure to support the original creators in other ways! While the VN is on Steam without mods its a subpar port without the good art and voice acting.
Hey ARK. You should start putting your reviews under the play list "GR anime reviews" The last one on there is psycho pass and i honestly think you are losing out on views by not doing this.
Thumbs up if you agree?
Al Blue Problem fixed :)
GRArkada :D . Hope that makes a difference for you! I know you get this all the time but your reviews are a highlight of my week! (or bi-week? gah you know what i mean)
GRArkada can you please review shin sekai yori
GRArkada there's actually a function in RUclips, that I only learned about recently myself, that automatically adds videos to playlists. Go to the playlist itself, click Playlist Settings and...the rest should explain itself. You can tell it to look for videos with certain words in the title, certain tags, words in the description and whichever permutations thereof you feel appropriate. It will even search through your existing (public) uploads and tell you it can add x many (when applicable) right there and then.
Hella' useful feature to be sure
GRArkada Hey Arkada ! Have you thought of making a first reaction to a show called Kiseijuu: Sei no kakuritsu (Parasyte) I would really enjoy that =)
It's such a shame. The Umineko visual novel is one of my absolute favorites, beating even Higurashi and Clannad. All this talk of "failed execution" in the anime is perfectly resolved in the visual novel where everyone gets great characterization, the "metaworld" scenes are very much relevant, important and not at all out of place, and it's really fun trying to go along and figure out the mystery as you read it. I haven't even heard of anyone trying to figure out the mystery while watching the anime, which is pretty sad.
If anyone here thought the premise of the show was great and full of potential, but the show wasted it; I seriously recommend checking out the visual novels. They DO have an official release on the MangaGamer website, and while they're in Japanese they come with a link to the officially recognized English translation by TheWitchHunt.
Just the first 4 episodes of the VN could have EASILY been a full 50 episodes long, and if I remember correctly, the ninth twilight in Legend of The Golden Witch was completely removed altogether to make time for the tea party. The anime is good to watch if you've already read the visual novel to get a new perspective on the murders, but you can't read the VN episodes 5-8 with only watching the anime. ALSO THE ANIME DIDNT DO THE SCENE WHERE BERNKASTEL SAYS "NIPAH" LIKE WTF, HOW DARE YOU?
WAIT, BENRKASTEL SAID "NIPAH"!!! I'm going to watch episode 1-4 just for it! Ive watched the anime and I'm now reading episode 6.
The anime also skips the fight scene between Krauss and the goat demon. It may of been a comedic scene in the VN, but it also gave a great deal of characterization to Krauss and the other adults. Plus it was fucking EPIC!
Where can I find the VN?! It's making me upset cause I'm sure it's great ¬-¬

Now you have a choice of which English translation patch you want to use,
English patch that keeps the original sprites and backgrounds, no voice acting: witch-hunt.com/
English patch with PS3 sprites, PS3 backgrounds, and voice acting (I recommend you use this one) : uminekofix.wikia.com/wiki/Tweaking_Umineko_Wiki
PhantoonFire Woow Thank you soo much ^-^
the vn is a fucking masterpiece and everyone should read it, i like it even better than higurashi
Esteban Velarde agreed. It's my favorite 07th expansion game
It becomes amazing when erika appears.
Erika is a boring Mary Sue wannabe detective, annoying and an embarrassment for detectives of all kinds, even third-rate detectives. She needs special privileges she shouldn't have had and meta knowledge to get anything done and even with those, she just sucks. At least throughout Episode 5, don't know how it goes from there.
the fandom is toxic as shit tho
Can I please send you a free copy of the original umineko game to go with the fate stay night set you bought from me. Then you can actually enjoy the story and get why Beatrice and battler arguing is actually the meat of the series as that is how you solve the series, the worse part of the anime is that it flat out screws up scenes so you can't solve the mystery.
Nathan Treichel EVERYONE, THIS GUY. THIS GUY RIGHT HERE IS AMAZING. In response to your comment though, of course! Can you get a message to me privately and we can work stuff out?
GRArkada But PLEASE, Ark, apply this patch to it: uminekofix.wikia.com/wiki/Tweaking_Umineko_Wiki . Without Voice acting it isn't nearly as good (though still awesome).
kayserlein1 need to agree here, much better athmosphere with the original japanese voices.
Not to forget the much better visuals. Please play it only with this patch or you will not have as awesome an experience.
If you ask me Umineko is one of those things that fails to translate into an anime. Heck if you compare the manga to the anime the first Umineko volume takes up the whole first episode of the anime and that is a 1/4 of the manga for the first volume. Ryukishi07 does have some pacing issues in general I think but the anime takes them and turns it up to 12.
I completly agree with you, I just started reading the manga since apparently it explains a lot more.
and it actually has an ending
@ULTIMATE GOKU Let the manga/novel tell you.
@ULTIMATE GOKU I haven’t read it specifically BECAUSE it actually spells out in detail how each murder in each game was carried out. I liked the cat box more when it was closed.
@@goobermagoob9160 the solutions of the murders are in the Episode 7 manga, ep 8 manga new content is more focused in Sayo psychology, it's pretty different overall from the VN version, i recomend giving it a read
I just realized... Umi means sea. Neko means cat. Umineko translates to seagull. Japan, how the hell do you call a seagull and sea-cat?
And thats why i love Japan so much :)
I think it's because seagull calls sound kind of like cats yowling?
Yeah explain that one Japan. A sea cat. When the sea cats cry. ^. ^
They are pronunced the same but are written differently
The only thing this anime accomplished was that it successfully killed any chances of Umineko EVER getting a good, or even complete, anime adaption.
true, but not every good VN needs an anime.
I'm starting to think that maybe I just shouldn't watch anime adaptations of VN's I've read. I just get disappointed every single time.
Clannad was good.
It was. But I actually saw Clannad's anime before I read the VN, so there wasn't any chance for me to get disappointed by it either way. It feels like every time I read the VN first however, the anime just feels mediocre.
I don't know, as someone mentioned before, after Fate/Stay was redeemed thanks to ufotable after that travesty that came out years ago, then if it ends up in the right hands, it might just get redone in a much better way.
This is still one of the best stories I've read, the VN was just so amazing and I remember waiting every year to get a new glimpse of what could be behind Umineko's "cat box". I've read the VN so many times and it pains me so much people don't read the VN only because how horrible the anime was. The story told in the original game and the ps3 remakes is an amazing one, every single word you must check it over and over again, but in the anime the whole story was thrown out of the window. While it was possible (insanely hard) to understand the whole story before Alliance (4th arc) the anime leaves out so many important scenes and focus on the most useless ones. And the good scenes portrayed are done so lazily that they lose all meaning (Im looking at the tea party and the ??? of Alliance on the anime)
AMEN
do you know where i can read/play the visual novel?
NEETisLEET Fuwanovel has it for download with the PS3 patch, which I recommend.
Amungs Madsen
alright thanks for the help!
sure it is, I'm guessing you don't read a lot
I'm sure someone's already told you this, but the visual novels are freaking /fantastic./ Ryukishi's prose consistently make the novels gripping, meaningful and the music and atmosphere lend so much better to a VN format. Part of the problem is that Studio DEEN didn't even have a good understanding of the mystery (Ryukishi really only told the head director and the voice actress of Beatrice the meanings behind all his vague mysteries.)
If you read the visual novels, you'll also feel that the meta world and real worlds have very interesting parallels that all build up to the amazing, mindblowing climax of the series.
The anime was not able to capture even 1/10th of the beauty of the visual novels. If you ever have a free hundred hours or so, I'd give them all a read.
Higu adaptation was good.
Umi adaptation was not.
DEEN ruined Christmas, and it makes me sad that the show makes people not realize how amazing the VN is. I know you probably don't have the time, but you should read the VN. It does everything right that the show did wrong. Which is everything except the music. And it did that better too.
Wow am I like the only person who actually kinda liked Umineko and even re-watched it?
The only one who felt like this watching the anime probably...
They aren't the only one.
I really liked it... I like all of Umineko~
^ u^
I hate when the guy says it has no real ending, when now by now we have all the story complete and solved
I really liked Umineko (anime), and I finished the manga (Twilight of the Golden Witch). I cried at the end.
I.. I didn't even remember you could give a really bad score to an anime :|
Carson Groel you're aren't alone lol
if this was given 5,8 how bad are the score 1 animes? :S
fanfic drama with shitty animation an voice acting?
you know, the one that makes you say "i've seen porn with a better plot than this"
Wolf Pytlak That sums up Pupa
Umineko VN > Higurashi VN >>>> Higurashi Anime >>>>>>>>>>> Shit >>>>>>>>>>>> Umineko Anime
I was wondering if you could give advise for a fellow anime reviewer. I'm having trouble with copy wright issues even after putting that copy wright notice card at the beginning of my videos. Should I try to dispute the claim or do I have to re-upload my reviews?
Literally ALL of your issues you brought up in this video are nonexistent in the visual novel. not even exxagerating. there's a lot of stuff you say isn't explained or chars you say don't get enough screentime/development. but the VN basically has none of these issues whatsoever.
to anyone reading this comment, read the Visual novel. please do. it's honestly one of the best fuckin things i have ever read, and most would agree with me on that
I know you don't really like people that tell you this, but if you really want to even start with the enormous universe that is Umineko, forget about the anime since you won't get anything out of it. This visual novel surpasses in every aspect Higurashi, at least in my opinion, and you will get all the character devlopment you want for every character, the full mystery, kickass music and awesome voice acting if you play the PC port of the PS3 version of the novel.
If you don't want to read Higurashi that's fine, since the anime did a decent job (but not perfect) of adapting the novel into an anime, but that's not the case for Umineko. And if you really liked Higurashi, please read Umineko. You'll love it.
I think that he will, but when it's licenced. I think that he doesn't want to play the patched version, because he wants to buy game to support developers.
IF it ever gets an official release. With this terrible adaptation acting as it's shackles, it's doubtful it ever will. There are simply not enough people willing to sit through 50+ hours of text, with such a bad reputation. Sadly, I don't believe umineko will ever get such privileges. Heck, we were lucky they finally brought Steins;Gate here. Now we can just keep hoping for Chaos;Head and Robotics;Notes to be localized as well. Sadly, since their animes didn't do too well... it's even doubtful they will get it. Nevertheless I shall keep hoping. :3
Ginchan
Witch Hunt, the ones who did the translation, have links to an online retailer to buy the official legal digital version of the game on their web site. The patch just modifies the text files and fixes some technical issues with running a Japanese sourced game on a English using computer.
katanja4 So you can play the game legally? Well, I would like to hear Arkada's opinion about Umineko's universum, that would be cool and all, provided that he wants to, but judging from this review I think he does.
Ginchan yes, the people who made Unimeko are aware of witch-hunt and are cool with them. if things are the same from a few years ago, you can actually download the first chapter for free and use the witchhunt patch.
I feel Umineko No Naku Koro Ni is kinda like Watchmen, one of those unfilmable works. The Sound Novel is so genius and creative that it might not just work as either a movie or a tv-show. The Sound Novel is one of the best pieces of fiction ever made.
I bought the blu rays and regret not one cent of my money having gone into them. I loved this anime and I'm equally loving the visual novel of part 2. I think what allowed me to enjoy the anime so much was that I was already aware of the failings of the show before watching it, so I could adjust my expectations accordingly and because of this I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.
i personally just enjoyed it and i didn't read the visual novel, i should, but i wont.
Alex Wendling There are actually TWO visual novels. The anime adapts the first one. The second visual novel is what closes out the overall story. I'm currently going though that one (Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru) and it's great fun. It's really long, but definitely worth it if you've watched the anime already.
The sad thing about this anime existing and being so bad is that it chases people away from the amazing visual novel. Please, if you have any interest in Umineko, read the visual novel and avoid the anime. I HAAAAATED the anime and the visual novel is an absolute masterpiece imo
Holy shit, Umineko has a physical release? Woah...
I love Umineko, both the VN and the Anime, although for a fully adapted version of Umineko, we'd need a few hundred episodes, and I don't think any studio is willing to do that.
yeah, you should read the novel. it is much much much better than the anime adaptation. D:
you won't regret it.
I've read it and it's easily the best thing ever.
Agreed
Damn that intro was well-written... Noice.
Srew the Shadow Thank you very much!
GRArkada No problem beautiful ;) Stay sexy
GRArkada you sexy canadian your damn good at what you do nice review
Whats the piano song in the intro i must kno !!
I always relish watching GR reviews but I have to admit it's even better when I already watched the anime. Because then I imagine myself in a library lit only by the fireplace sitting in a comfy armchair smoking a pipe while listening to Arkada's critic punctuating his sentences with "Quite" and "Indeed".
l33t9r0u93 Yes, quite. *sips tea*
*glees* Senpai noticed me
Arkada didn't like this as well? Hmmm, interesting.
No one should like this show.
AnimeGuy FACT!
AnimeGuy
As the rating implies, it's pretty average and also my guily pleasure.
***** you have other feelings towards this show?
Umineko, the VN at least, has one of the most masterfully crafted stories I've ever seen, even though a few of the mysteries are left to the interpretation of the player. It not only equals Higurashi, it easily surpasses it. The anime dropped the ball so hard, it caused an earthquake. At least we got that kickass OP. The ED ain't bad, either.
I watched the anime first and then I played through all of the visual novels. I had kinda liked the anime... before I noticed all the skipped, vital stuff that can only be read in the visual novel. The only good stuff to come out of the anime is the AMAZING music... and the Fanmade Parody by ZeroQ. He makes a bunch of references to the nonsensical nature of the anime adaptation.
Anyway, hope you get to enjoy the VNs at some point.
excuse me but id like to watch this parody but have trouble finding it so i was wondering if you could send me a link
anim242
Sure thing.
It's fairly difficult to find all of the episodes due to Frontier Works taking them down on RUclips, so you'll have to go and get the episodes from the guy's mediafire (or just watch them there).

ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ GR Visual Novel Review: Katawa Shoujo or RIOT ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ
***** if Arkada ever does a VN review I totally agree it should be katawa shoujo. I haven't played it myself but I've heard nothing but good things about it and it doesn't have an anime adaptation. EXCEPT if Arkada wouldn't do a VN review of one of his favorite series/universe then he definitely won't do a review of a VN series he's only heard about.
Agree, they nailed moon in the ost
This review makes me think you didn't understand Umineko at all. Which is totally normal by watching the anime. I don't know why but the anime failed in almost every way in comparison to the visual novel. The novel was cut into bits for the anime which won't give you the informations needed to understand umineko, the purpose of beatrice's "game", the blurring line between reality and possible magic and most important: it won't give you anything to solve the riddles yourself. So as many did before me: I highly recommend the VN.
I just want to say I love how much effort you put into these reviews, especially in the beginning, when you show the title
It still baffles me that Studio DEEN still gets adaption work after Umineko.
I like how your reviews is lively, I can honestly watch every one of your videos (which I did) and not feel bored.
I like how you do these show with the visuals and adding some of its actual music. That's a wonderful amount of effort most reviewers aren't willing to put forth. Because of this, I watch every episode you make, whether I am curious about the show or not.
*Puts a VN sprite as a thumbnail* *Talks about the anime*
i swear to god arkada if you ever did a review of boku no pico, you would make my life.
you just want to see the lowest score possible, don't you?
***** no i just want to see his reaction to it, i watched misty's which was hilarious now i want to see his.
Some people just want to watch the world burn......
Arkada, do you read visual novels? I can't remember you ever explicitly saying so. But a lot of anime you really like (Clannad, Fate Stay Night, Higurashi, etc) are all based on visual novels.
He has been through the Ace Attorney series (yes it counts), he is in possession of the Fate/Stay Night VN (no clue if he has read any of it, or not). Also if you go over to his gaming channel (Arkada Gaming) you will see that on Twitch he has been playing/reading Steins Gate.
I love the way you review these shows, no other reviewer goes as in depth or looks at it in such an objective view as you, that I have found, so thanks for being so professional about these anime
It's been a while since you made this review. Did you already play Umineko VN since then? If you did, what's your thoughts?
You pretty much summed up why the anime sucked so much. Because the adaptation is compressed so much, character development is kept at a minimum.
I had my friend sit down with me as we watched it together and she could not solve the series with the lack of information and she was just as confused as everyone else when it ended so quickly without resolving anything. Many explanations like why magic works outside of the island makes a lot of sense when you get it down that all the magic scenes never happened. The anime does a poor job in EP 3 bringing that up and Virgillia says that during her battle with Beatrice. EP 4 is one of the most magic oriented episodes to the point of ridiculousness and EP 4 in general is hard to solve because there are hardly any red truth to work with.
Combine this with all the shit that is taken out and you realize how much they fucked up. Like at the end of EP 1, I don't consider this as much as a spoiler as it should have been common sense. The gun Battler has to shoot the painting had no bullets in it. This is not a magic scene and its just outright incorrect information on the anime's part. All the gun proves is that Natsuhi could not have committed suicide (even though it was obvious she was sniped by Beatrice). Then a certain's characters death in EP 2 is completely messed up. EP 4 in general just fucked everything up. From having Ange just being all emo explaining her life after the tragedy but still not giving us the most important information on why Ange could get Sakutaro but Beatrice couldn't to what the hell did she expect going to the island alone? They took out Mortal Stampede the baddest of the badass soundtracks in the entire franchise and fucked that ending up and Battler doesn't even hug Beatrice after their battle. Heck the anime made Battler seem correct with all of those blue truths when the game made it clear he was talking out of his ass and Beatrice gave up. SMALL BOMBS PEOPLE.
And seriously Battler does not have a disadvantage at all. Battler claimed to be a mystery expert but fails to understand the motive because he's so angry with Beatrice murdering his family. (Hence Why Will is so badass in EP 7 who goes for the heart of the problem). Every arc Beatrice is giving him an advantage and Battler fails to take advantage of it. EP 2 gives Beatrice red truths so he could realize anti-magic solutions. Fails. EP 3 gives him Virgillia and Ronove as his assistance. He's so close in that arc but missed it because he spent too much time falling for Beatrice instead of figuring out who she was. EP 4 gives him the blue truth which can slam the red truth rather easily. Overall the anime just makes Battler more incompetent then the actual material.
And this is why the visual novel and manga will always be the best source for the series.
The visual novel is godlike, but fucking long.
Hey Ark, have you by any chance gotten around to play the actual VN by now? I'm quite curious, what you thought about it, and the "objection tea parties" of the VN.
Ah dude umineko is such a wonderful story I have no words to describe how amazing the games were, the character are all amazing and complete (in the games I mean) it's so sad the anime was such a disappointment, it's sad to see such a wonderful story get ditched by everyone just because it has a crappy anime adaptation, which to be fair is the one thing that made me play the games. I loved higurashi too, hell its amazing! But I'd take umineko over higurashi any day
Review guilty crown plz!!!!
It was terrible. There is the review.
Your opinion man. I loved it
Guilty crown was so bad I dropped it at the 6th episode
That's cool man. But that's you not everyone
I really didn't like it as much as others either, opinions are opinions after all. I guess hearing Tristan's thoughts on it can be more interesting, but I feel the likelihood isn't as high as you want it to.
This is perhaps the best anime review channel in existence, the quality is really good, however I'm guessing it's pretty time consuming or GRArkada has a life or college and is busy, and there is a ton of anime that he has not yet revealed, I'm usually all about quality over quantity but maybe he should consider cutting the quality down just a bit and perhaps put out 2 videos per week. Just a suggestion, I'm sure there is plenty of people happy with the way things currently are.
You want more reviews? You should totally subscribe to Gigguk and HoldenReviews, they get a review out everyday.
razschi Gigguk hasn't uploaded a review in a year.
No... that should NEVER happen
***** that's the joke.
I'd suggest Brent Newhall's reviews. As someone who watches a lot of them, his are the best that I've seen in terms of being objective, informative, and intellectual, plus he has something like 170 uploaded so you'll be able to sate your appetite for reviews.
Despite the fact that you havee probably the longest introduction out of all my subscribed youtube channles you have a very infomrative yet highly entertaining show, whether the review is positive or not.
You seem to be one of those gentlemen from another time and I feel like we need those people today :D
The presentation of these reviews is second to none. I'm now watching reviews for animes I know for sure I won't watch, which sometimes leads me to watch. Kudos! I look forward to these.
"For alternate anime recommendations: Phoenix Wright." I would love if this statement became true.
ayyy
Yeah when I watched this after finding it out it penned from the same person who wrote Higurashi, I was left very pissed off. It was so bad, I ranted it to everyone I knew for days. But... closure to the mystery never left me. It haunted me. After waiting for the 2nd season after the VN was finished for years. It dawned to me, it probably will never get made.
So I sought out the VN during a period of time when I had a lot of free time. My mind was totally blown and is still reeling from it since a couple of years ago. Umineko was a Masterpiece, and after reading it I now understand it could only be fully enjoyed as a VN. The story takes full advantage of the medium that is a VN. Anime or Manga or even a regular Novel can't really do it justice.
I must admit I was nervous when I saw this pop up in my subscription box. But you managed to hit this review clear out of the park and into space! Really fantastic review Arkada!
P.S loving the new camera!
I don't usually post on your videos for some reason but I must say I GREATLY enjoyed the critical nature of the video and the new camera looks great. Good job sir, I am thoroughly impressed.
Typical shitty adaptation of a masterpiece. I wonder if we'll ever get anime that live up to their visual novel material.
In my opinion, Ufotable did a great job with their adaptation of Fate/Stay Night's UBW route, looking gorgeous while also remaining very faithful to the source material. The day they decide to make an Umineko remake is the day I can die happy.
Higurashi's adaptation was really good.
A decent anime adaptation would take like 100 episodes, though; there's just too much text. While you could trim a lot, doing so would also remove a lot of the characterization that makes the series good.
Honestly I don't understand the appeal to having an anime for people who have already read the VN. It's not exactly an action-packed story.
I don't think Umineko is really suited for an anime adaptation, since the core of this is basically a couple of people, sitting around a tea table and discussing a bunch of stuff. There are a couple of action sequences that would work well, but most of Umineko is talking, talking and talking. And you really can't cram this tale into something as short as the current anime of it, not even into Higurashi anime. Higurashi's story is a lot more forgiving when it comes to skipping a few smaller scenes, Umineko requires most of the scenes in some detail to work at all.
Hey Arkada, I'm actually a very, very new subscriber, having subbed when you reviewed Terror in Resonance, so let me just quickly get out that I really love your reviewing style. It's both informative and entertaining, at least to me.
I was really wondering if you have any First Impressions planned out for the anime of this season, because I reaaally want to know what you think about Parasyte, Fate/stay night (2014), Amagi Brilliant Park, and I guess maybe Cross Ange? At the very least, do one on Parasyte.
Thanks again for all that you do!
being a recent sub as well, I wouldnt mind seeing some first thought impressions of animes.
The thing I love about you the most is how well you explain and analyze everything. A lot of reviewers say something sucks just because they don't like the genre or characters. You sir look at the show not from what you like personally. You don't just completely destroy a show because it's not your favorite type of genre. We'll done Sir you have my respect and I'm sure the respect of many others.
I seriously love the quality of your videos now :D
THIS ANIME DOESNT EXIST
Jules Cominazzini what about tsukihime
Why isn't that in red?

Love you and completely understand that you don't speak Japanese, but listening to you say "Yumineko" instead of "Umineko" was extremely painful
Watching the show was painful. Have some perspective.
@@TheEnderLeader1 It's even more painful when you know that the original source was actually amazing lmao
@@venor2612 It's even more painful when you know that the adaptation to Higurashi, its predecessor was actually really good.
@@TheEnderLeader1 Lmfao yes

Battler: Objection Hearsay. How can you prove that that’s your name?
You have a talent for these kinds of reviews and you get better each time.
Through whole anime I had no idea what is going on.
Main character is teleporting through different places every second. WTF?
In his intro that piano song do you know where its from? i think i heard it before but i cant put my finger on it.
otaku_dreamz Late reply to your question but try this watch?v=elbJFYakbUI "Libera Me" from the anime Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Does anyone know where I could watch a walkthrough of the visual novel?
Really nice, to-the point, summed up review. Great job and I really like the lighting change.
He complains that Battler is at a disadvantage, but the catbox was meant to make that so. Beatrice made the catbox so they could forever fight, with Battler at a disadvantage (though he is always to win because Lambdadelta and Bernkastel said so). This is until he becomes the Golden Sorcerer, and Beatrice is no longer the game master.
Though I admit, the anime is at fault for not fleshing out Kyrie and Rudolf, it's because if they did so we would be spoiled for Twilight of the Golden Witch (the last one as far as I know) and the game did not come out yet. Also, it would spoil the true ending by telling us anything about Battler's family outside of Ange (who is an outsider to the loop).
Not only did they leave out key points of plot, they actually added things that make it LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SOLVE.
Read the VN, it's amazing. Trust me, it's worth your time. (I also prefer the VN for Higurashi). My own advise is, be ready for bait and switch.
The Witch Hunt isn't official, but the creator of the VN actually gave them a full thumbs up re: their translation.
Only other thing I'll say is that, aside from anime specific stuff (EG bad animation), every single concern raised in this is addressed in the VN~ Duhuhuhuhuhu
Do you accept recommendations? If you do, can you do a review for Dangan Rompa the animated series sometime in the future?
I would love to get your opinion on it.
Wow I can't believe you actually did this review, I really wanted you to do it but never thought you would ever actually review it. Great review.
Rewatching this video knowing what I know now makes me REALLY hope they're rebooting the Umineko anime after Gou ends.
Well sue me, I kinda enjoyed Umineko... even though it didn't make sense in the end. Was fun to watch.
Thank you, Just you reviewing this will give it some of the popularity it deserves, hopefully we get more VN fans now.
I didn't even think about that, but now that you mention it the comment section has been recommending the VN like crazy.
I want to hear a review on Valvrave the liberator, I find it as one of my favorite mech anime's that I think you'll enjoy reviewing. Thanks and good work! Love your videos!
another awesome video! do you already know when the review week of awesome is gonna be or still not known?
Perhaps you should start playing the Visual Novels of these Anime that are based on them, so that you can offer a compare and contrast, and tell us which is the better version.
The show was awful, but after I've watched Higurashi and even after that I tried out the novel, and realized how extremely good the novel was compared to the TV show, and we can say, Higurashi Tv show wasnt near bad at all. I gave a try to the Umineko VN.
if the TV show is 5.8/10
the VN is 8,3/10 imo.
Higurashi VN is my 10/10 all-life love.
I'll watch this after I finish high-risk and since I want to build up my collection I'll buy it. Also I saw a collection of all 7 movies of garden of sinners on aniplex's website going for $150.00 would your recommend I buy or is it too much to spend. Anyway great video as always.
The mystery is "Who is the culprit?". IE, "Who's killing everyone?" The actual set up for the show is a battle between two interpretations of the series of novels/arcs. Whether or not the killer is magical is literally the point of the story. Those arguments are meant to progress not just the characters', but your own methods of figuring out the antagonist. It's incredibly interesting, to me at least.
Sadly, the second half of the arcs explain why Beatrice doesn't have an advantage, and they were never animated. In fact, Battler literally can't lose their fight. The very fact that it's a show is a problem with it. It was originally a massive story with a LOT of characterization for almost every character, but the fact it's cut into a series of 30 minute vignettes. I implore you, read the novel if you want to actually want to understand what's happening. It's brilliant. It doesn't talk down to you, and NEVER reveals what the culprit is in the name of not holding the reader's hand.
You made a huge mistake.
Read the VN. Stay away from the anime. There is a reason the fanbase pretends it doesn't exist. Do not go in expecting Higurashi either, it is an entirely different beast. You will either love it or hate it, I happen to be the former.
Hey Arkada! I would never recommend reading a VN on an anime review but seriously this is an EMERGENCY! Read the goddamn novel it's THE masterpiece. Higurashi fails in comparaison (and I really like Higurashi).
Umineko really challenges you to necessarily use that notebook of yours. It's the only thing this close to perfection and you'll be so thankfull if you read it. The anime is an abomination compared to the VN.
Solid review as always, GRArkada.
So, now that the last two Hellsing Ultimate OVAs are out will you review them all later on?
This was a really interesting review.
Can you review Tokyo Mew Mew sometime in the future? It was one of my no.1s.
Love your work &
Many Thanks
Awesome review! 11/10, would (and will) watch it again!
Lmao...
I want to play a phoenix wright game now..... or watch an anime of one (if there is one)
Always start with the original: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. And sadly there is no anime....... yet!
***** I played that one already,
tjlnintendo did you play Justice For All, Trials and Tribulations, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Dual Destinies, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, or the 2 Edgeworth games? If not you should definitely get on that....
***** no,no,yes,yes,yes,and 1 edgeworth game and I'm planning on it :3
tjlnintendo cool, also there is an English, fan translation of the 2nd Edgeworth game on the interwebs called "Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth - The Prosecutor's Path"... I'm still holding out on the .000000000000001% chance we get an official release of it here, but in case you don't care...... the more you know!
Been waiting for the day that you reviewed this
Awesome review like always Ark. But I have one quick question tho, since the anime came before the game and the creators of the anime most likely had to make some stuff up and make it had an unfinished story. Do you think its possible for their to be a remake of Umineko just cause the fans of the game wanted it? Kinda like what happen to FMA where the anime caught up to the manga and made up everything from a certain point on and then made FMAB just because the fans wanted it.
anyone reading this. PLAY THE VISUAL NOVEL! (Its an amazing masterpiece better than higurashi) get the ps3 patch because the sprites for the original are pretty horrible but the game is amazing if the plot is at all interesting to you.
This anime is one of my big guilty pleasures.
Could you review Escaflowne and/or Shinsekai Yori? I'd love to see your opinion on shinsekai but i've been wondering whether or not to continue watching Escaflowne and it'd be great to get some trusting input on it.
Umimeko is coming out on steam in June along with chapter 3 of Higurashi.
When are you going to do the reviews of the review week??
Just read the manga or play the VN, their some of the best series with one of the best female characters I've seen.
Lovely how your camera is working. Keep it up!
Hey Arkada, love this review, but I'd be really happy to hear your opinions on Guilty Crown, I'm just now watching it and would like to hear an opinion outside Holden's. Thanks!
oh my gawd GR pls read the novel
The visual novel is very very long, which gives it more time to flesh out the characters and set up the plot of the other arcs... I think in that sense it solves most of the problems you had with the show. But the fact that the VN is better doesn't excuse the anime adaptation being shit.
I know this comment is pretty new for an old video but I'll say this. I decided to buy the series umineko because I did read the manga associated with it and I have to wonder if I know the ending, will that make the show more enjoyable? Even if it doesn't I love the boxes the series comes in my gosh they are so freaking neat.
I am really glad you made this review of Umineko because when I watched it some time last year, I truly was confused at the end of it and horribly disappointed when I realised it had no second season. In fact I forgot it had no second season because I was so focused on the story plus I had finished Higurashi (including all the ova's so I was pretty lost irl) and I needed more of No Naku Koro Ni.
Anyway, I am glad because I feel like you explained the story better and also helped point out why it failed to live up to it's predecessor. Still, the story, character and relation to Higurashi makes me want to go through the VN; I will solve this mystery!
