    My favorite area from alola is actually vast poni canyon. For alola there's alot to explore in there, there are some seriously tough trainers there and you travel together with lillie and you can see how much she's grown. Its a way better victory road than alolas victory road. Plus I adore the music

    I think they made some psuedos more accessible in X/Y because a lot of them are Dragon types, and their thought process was "Well since Fairy types exist now, Dragons are a little more balanced, so let's give players the opportunity to use them in a normal playthrough for once"

    Po Town is so cool. I think it's where dialogue takes a backseat (a VERY welcome implentation considering this is Sun and Moon we're talking about) and the game shows us this broken down area Team Skull choose to reside in. Honestly I think it's reflective of the team itself. A reject town no one goes to, an outcast to the society of Alola brought down by bad luck and torment. It's subtle but it works here. Plus we have the classic Team Skull shenanigans which I love to see and also provide a good amont of contrast with the somber area. Man I love Team Skull so much.

    Me who never played the original BW, fell in emotions when I got to the Celestial Tower in B2W2. The music is so amazingly deep and touching that is why I think so fondly of this place. Even not considering the music, i think the area is not bad at all, I genuinely wanted to use a Litwick in my team, but I dropped the idea because Tepig was my starter, and other than that I love the bell in the top of the tower and the feeling you are higher than the clouds, I thought it felt heavenly when I got in the top.

      Kalos has pretty good route design with each route having a unique aesthetic. Alola would be fine if they weren’t all so samey, there’s only so much of the same lush tropical area you can look at before getting bored. Galar though, absolute garbage tier level design.

    • @Velociraptor2000
      @Velociraptor2000 2 года назад +3

      @@handsoaphandsoap it's a tropical archipelago, of course its gonna looke the same, the same happens with Orre (Col./XD), it's a desert.

    • @handsoaphandsoap
      @handsoaphandsoap 2 года назад +11

      @@Velociraptor2000 All the routes have basically the exact same environment copy pasted, down to color palette and assets. Yeah, it should all have a somewhat similar vibe to keep it within the tropical island aesthetic but at the end of the day, this is a video game and not real life, there's no reason they couldn't have played with the visual design of the routes. Plus, even if it was the real world, tropical islands have all kinds of variety in environments, they are generally rich with both fauna and flora.
      When you look at Kalos, we've got the standard route design but then we also have a route with an upper level on a cliffside and a beach down below, a route with a big fountain in it, one with a roller skating arena, one filled with leaves, a marshy looking area, one route that's just completely covered in snow, etc. etc. Compare that to Alola, it's got pretty much three kinds of routes; grassy tropical looking route, a rocky looking route with yellow grass instead of the green, or a beachside route with access to the ocean. There's the occasional graveyard site or beach with black sand but other than that, there's not much variety to go about, especially when it comes to the color palette. It's all the same shade of green, blue, yellow and brown, only occasionally breaking up the color palette but just for like one part of one area. They somewhat improve it in USUM by changing some of the routes to have more interesting plantlife but it's still fairly monotonous.
      XY and SM have somewhat similar problems with exploration, where the game constantly stops you in your track to expose something or having some random fluff text for no reason, but XY are a lot more fun on a replay than SM because they break up the monotony of the gameplay with all the different types of areas you pass as you adventure through Kalos.
      Do I think SM are stronger games? Yes, absolutely. They're probably in my top 3 of Pokémon games because of how strong the story is and how fun many of the battles are, with a great variety of different Pokémon to choose for your team. However, whenever I want to revisit the 3DS era of Pokémon games, I always find myself rather wanting to replay XY because of how much more exciting the region is, and because of how much of a slog SM are to get through, in a major way due to the constant interruptions, but the underwhelming level design is an even bigger factor in my eyes.

    Kalos Route 8 is lowkey slept on, its a completely different experience whether you navigate it from up on the cliffs or down on the beach. It's also the point in the game where the Pokedex opens up. Elevated routes are goated (examples being Unova Routes 13 and 23).

  • @pokeperson1000

    Talking about the inaccessible doors in Kalos just make me remember how I _really_ wished they went back to the “definitive third version” formula for Kalos at the very least.
    I mean, one, “Z” just naturally follows after X and Y, it’s just perfect. Sun and Moon, whatever, it’d be more ambiguous as to whether we’d end up getting the so called “stars” or the more creative “eclipse”,(which Cosmog doesn’t have an evolutionary form to make a trio for, and Necrozma, I suppose technically counts as a third legendary that gained a larger story role in another game of the same generation, doesn’t feel quite right to me personally) but regardless.
    Two, yeah, there was so much that could have been expanded upon in a pokemon Z. Inaccessible areas that were teased, themed areas that could have held more special Pokémon, giving Zygarde a larger role in the game he was _introduced in as the third of a main legendary trio,_ like Giratina in Platinum, instead of just anticlimactically being at the back of a shallow cave with even less fanfare than Mewtwo.
    Instead, Zygarde straight up gets pushed off all the way to the next generation, where you basically collect the cells scattered throughout the region like ProZD collects pinecones before his fight with King Dragun. A nice little way to get strong stuff fast, but literally playing no story significant role. It’s just kind of… there.

    Honestly, Unova is my favorite region out of all the regions of Pokemon. There isn't an single area that I hate nor doesn't go anything wrong. They're all so good. I agree that the final routes in both BW & BW2 are the best ones. And I don't mind Celestial Tower. I can agree that there's to many trainers to battle that u can't avoid for the most part. But at least there's a nurse that can restore your Pokemon. So u don't have to worry about getting your Pokemon to the Pokemon Center or using items in order to stay healthy. And the area itself felt more alive and had an unique backstory. The only area in Unova that; while I don't despise, but doesn't like an whole lot is the Abysmal Ruins in Undella Town. While it's nice for it's backstory & taken place in underwater, the puzzles aren't too bad & the items u get are reliable, the concept of it is pretty tedious. U only had whatever minutes to explore the underwater ruins and it'll collapse. Forcing u to head up back the surface & try again. Thankfully that area is totally optional and the items u get are still with u. But going back to the beginning again and where u left off is pretty annoying.
    Speaking of Route 10 in Galar ( which is the complete opposite of Unova's Route 10 in terms of uniqueness ), why are there swimmer Trainers in that area? It's an snowy area. And there isn't an beach in Galar.

    Celestial Tower as the worst? Really? Celestial Tower...? One of the most memorable parts to me of any Unova playthrough is climbing to the top and ringing the bell, especially in Nuzlockes where i'm dedicating that ring to my own fallen pokemon as well. And the actual content of the tower itself is fine. I don't see how it's somehow the worst. I'd give that to the Moor of Icirrus for just being...more of icirrus. pretty boring place. Anyway...
    Kalos: I'm gonna try to avoid putting towns on this, but the best area to me is the cliffs of route 9 and the towns that surround it. I love the feeling of seeing the sea and beach from overhead, only to climb down and travel there myself once I've passed through Ambrette town, and the route transfers seamlessly into Cyllage city. Kalos has a lot of great locations. (Route 13 is the worst tho, I'll give you that.)
    Alola: I gotta give it to Vast Poni Canyon. Exploring this area before the final confrontation in SM felt incredible, It's such a unique looking area. It also stands out to me personally because I've been to it's real life equivalent! Worst...does festival plaza count? I'm gonna say festival plaza counts. It's festival plaza.
    Galar: I gotta agree with Route 10 being the worst, but as someone who hasn't played the Crown Tundra yet...Glimwood Tangle is pretty for the 5 minutes you're in there???

    Agree with a lot of what you said, but the “Galar main game areas are all bad” joke doesn’t go over well for me personally. How is Glimwood Tangle not good? A forest that is actually dark like a real forest that you navigate with bioluminescent mushrooms and has a very distinct roster of new and unique Mons to catch? That place is full of charm. Other places like Stow-On-Side have a lot of culture and personality to them. I get it if you don’t like them overall as much as other regions, but to say Galar main area had no redeeming areas at all is a stretch.

    • @TheClearSummer
      @TheClearSummer 2 года назад +22

      It’s not that the areas or their concepts in Galar aren’t nice, but there’s literally nothing to do in any of the routes. Pokemon is a game, not a piece of 2D artwork. You can’t go off anywhere to explore or find cool little details that add more to the world, the whole route just circles back in on itself rather than branching off and making you feel like you’re exploring alternate paths and connections and areas - you have to use a variety of tools to access certain areas. Just pick a random route like Unova route 14. Yes, conceptually, it’s ‘just rivers running through field and woodland’, but when you’re playing, you see items and trainers just out of reach, and you have to figure out different ways of traversing the area that’s not just ‘walk into it’. Unfortunately Galar just looks pretty, but has no real substance in that sense, which is super frustrating because, as you say, the concepts they had were amazing. They just didn’t make it fun, at least for me anyway.

My point was that this video isn’t”t “Best and Worst DESIGNED Areas in Every Region” just “Best and Worst” in general. That by definition includes all other aspects besides navigation design, including things like aesthetics and available encounters. You want to think Glimwood is too linear, cool. Hell, if you want to think all of Galar is too linear, cool. But when you are saying not a single area of Galar has ANY redeeming features, that not ONE has an interesting appearance, that not ONE has an interesting set of encounters available, etc., THAT is what I’m saying is cringe. Even if you don’t like aspects of Galar, or don’t like Galar overall that much, it DOES have redeeming features as every Gen has. Claiming otherwise is a pretty hot take imho.

    I would argue that Glimwood Tangle and Route 6 are at least a cut above the other routes in Galar. Glimwood Tangle could use some work on the layout and level design, but in terms of atmosphere I think its one of the best in the series. Getting to see Impidimp dart in and out of the light provided by the multicoloured mushrooms is so cool to see, and the mushrooms themselves provide such dynamic lighting that we never see in the series otherwise. Most of the time the routes are either perfectly bright or pitch black with very little in between. Also, Route 6 has some really nice background details like the Diglett statues in the sides of the cliffs and the teams of Falinks marching between their burrows. The only thing I don't like about it is how we somehow stop time whoever we climb a ladder.

    Po Town sticks out because it's just a broken town with a broken found family.
    It hits a lot harder to me because we care about Team Skull, the game makes absolutely sure that we like them before going there.
    Contrast this to Lavender Town, who cares about the random NPCs you fight there? Who cares about these random ghosts in the Old Chateau we know nothing about?
    They aren't characters
    Team Skull on the other hand, even the nameless grunts are some of the most well characterized characters in the mainline games

    The last little bit of Black/White was highly enjoyable I have to agree. I was actually shocked that I had to fight N and then Ghetsis right after with no chance to save or prep in between. I hadn't seen that coming but thankfully my team was well prepared and strong enough to overcome it with little difficulty. I think his Hydreigon took out one of my weaker Pokemon because I made a mistake and switched it in not knowing Hydreigon had a super-effective move to use against it, but that's about the extent of the trouble I had. As far as N goes I don't think he even damaged any of my Pokemon. Which I thoroughly enjoyed destroying him and finding out that I was correct about my assumption of him being used by someone else. I didn't know the story of Black/White prior to my playthrough of it, but N's lack of true conviction in what he was fighting for made me think that someone else was pulling the strings

    Favorite Area: Victory Road in Black 2 and White 2. It was a joy to explore, and even more in the post-game, when you can find the ruins of Team Plasma's Castle.
    Kalos:
    Worst Area: Dang it, I forgot how much I hated Route 13... the wind is the absolutely worst thing about it.
    Favorite Area: Anistar City. Love the aesthetics and music, and the old man's event got me right in the feels.
    Alola:
    Worst Area: Ultra Megalopolis in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Yeah, I was expecting way more from a WHOLE NEW CITY.
    Favorite Area: Team Rocket's Castle in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. As much as I disliked how these games changed Sun's and Moon's stories and removed most of what made them great, I LOVED the concept of Team Rocket being an interdimensional threat. The puzzles were a nice throwback, and fighting every leader from the other teams in the series, each packing their own signature legendary Pokémon, was a joy.
    Galar:
    Worst Area: Circhester Gym in Pokémon Shield. The third part of the gym is a blindness simulator.
    Favorite Area: Wild Area, Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra. The explorations of those areas are what I loved the most about Sword and Shield, and to this day I boot up my games every now and then to do some Max Raids when I want to kill time.

    after watching both videos and have a thought of it myself, I came out with my own favorite and least loved areas in the pokemon games that I've played.
    In Gen 1
    I love SS Anne the most. During my childhood I had the privilege to enter a big ship, and it's a wild experience. SS Anne in the game is that experience for the player character. Big ship, good amount of trainers, and it's the place to get the first ever HM in the history of pokemon.
    I really don't have a place that I don't like in gen 1, but I do have one that I enjoyed the least when I'm exploring it. Power Plant may be the place where one of the legendary birds house, but it's bland, a single floor location with nothing else to offer.
    In Gen 2
    Dragon's Den may be one of the locations where players just go to catch a pseudo legendary in Dratini/Dragonair and never come back, but I love the idea that Dragons making one location as their nest. Unfortunately it's limited to the Dragon types available at that time, which is really just a few.
    While I don't have a place where I dislike in Gen 1, I can easily say I really dislike Cianwood City. Before the remakes, almost every characteristics it has already been done with Cinnabar Island in Gen 1. A gym location where you need to surf to the corner of the map ? a legendary house itself next to it nearby ? It's a location where the player has absolutely no reason to return to until the additions of a Johto safari zone in the remakes.
