I'm a Pan Africanist myself, but I get extremely disappointed with statements from my fellow Africans treating South Africa as though it's a not genuine part of Africa. We have a very complicated pasts and unresolved issues racially and economically, however South Africa turned out to be the most developed country in Africa, thus it's seen as a western model in Africa. However throughout that complicated history we managed to firmly maintain our cultures and traditions. We're undoubtedly Africans, those Zulus in KZN are the descendants of the same Zulus who stood firm against the British and humiliated them before they were overwhelmed by their modern weapons. That spirit of warriors and Africanness will live on no matter how much we develop. Its a pity that poverty has become the definition of Africa, a lot has to change.

Pan Africanism has past its sell by date . SA is the land of the Khoi and San people , not the black Bantu . Sub Saharan Africa down to the Limpopo river is the ancestral indigenous homeland of the black tribes . In SA the only indigenous people are the Khoi and San First Nation . So that is a major reason why this country is different .

@Yardz-ej1lu 😂 stop that nonsense. There's no such thing as black bantu, it's like saying white Caucasian, also bantu is not an ethnic group rather a language group. Africans are indigenous to the African continent in it's entirety, not that we need confirmation but recent genetic studies showed that our ancestors have been here in South Africa going as far back as 7000 years, just because Nguni people arrived around the 1500s doesn't change the fact that it's our ancestral land. Stop regurgitating colonial imposed African or boer imposed history. That whole empty vacant land myths. The khoi and San are Africans and also our people.

@@Scar_762 I don't know who you are or what you look like, I can only guess with your comment. You're very lucky that there's a bunch of people in Africa who don't know their history and can be easily manipulated with lies, I'm not one of them. The boarders in Africa were drown by European colonisers, for clarity let's put them aside for a second, Khoi & San people have for thousands of years controlled South Western Africa, the so called Namibia, Botswana and Western South Africa, then there's Bantu people, a bunch of cultures stretching from central all the way the south, Nguni people [branch of Bantu people] Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele, Swati have for thousands of years controlled south Eastern Africa, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. That narrative came with these monsters from Europe, Dutch and Britain to avoid accountability for the crimes they committed against locals, as they ran over those Khoi San tribes and advanced to the East where they were humiliated by Zulus. Good luck on fooling people with that nonsense, I'm not one of em. What is wrong with people from other African countries?Always have negative things to say about South Africa in the comments. What is even "the real Africa"? Villages?? This is the mentality that's holding the continent behind, you guys don't want progress, why must our entire existence as Africans be reduced to villages and poverty? Why can't we elevate ourselves and become advanced societies with the high standard of living we all deserve? South Africa is an example of progress and what modern Africa should be,if anything you guys should be cheering South Africans on and striving for progress in your countries as well.Stop the hate, like seriously. Who cares who built what? At the end of the day something is getting built, white, black,Indian and coloured South Africans are all building South Africa together and we are all benefiting from the development of our country, and that's all that matters. You could learn a thing or two from us,instead of being so divisive and critical.

Ashley i would say is a blessing to have african America because you had been influential in our country since the 50's thru music ,and i learn alot about technology black people created in America but manipulated by jealous white majority. I will say come and help south africa and africa to build better electricity power stations and other industries rather than to depend on western world and china because they don't think and feel like us ,therefore call those engineers to teach and lecture in our university and create jobs

Thank you Ashley for this video, how I wish you could have vlogged your experience just so we can watch how you and the girls enjoyed. Village life in South Africa is the best. That is where we go to recharge, reconnect, now you'll understand why Joburg is so empty in December.
You don't have to worry about people judging you about South Africa, as SAns we. are subjected to that as well, funny enough those accusers can't even speak their own languages and they frown on anything tradition.
The question I have for those who say SA is not Africa is" Is it that difficult to unlearn the miseducation you were fed that the only thing that identifies Africa is abject poverty so if you don't see that it's not Africa.

A lot of people, again, will think that this family is doing what it is doing because you're African American. I have a colleague of mine whose family once hosted a White British Student Exchange, in the township of Umlazi in Durban; for 6 months. The entire family took it upon themselves to teach and expose this you white to life in SA, especially the township, to their culture as Zulu people and the whole country. She is still in contact wirh that guy, through social media, to this day. SA is too big to be about what you see about Cape Town and Johannesburg. We are very diverse and unique at the same time, and we appreciate you for showing that. ❤

I am glad you have raised this point. I am Zulu and in 2014 I went to a Zulu Cultural Village to improve my knowledge of the Zulu culture. When I was there I met with a Swidish couple, who were touring South Africa. They strongly indicated to me that they are less interested in places like Cape Town and Johannesburg, which are more Western. They said they were more interested in a true African experience. That is also the same reason why Ladysmith Black Mambazo became popular in the West. It is such a pity that South Africa is well known for Cape Town in the tourism industry and not for its richness in African culture.😢😢

I am honestly impressed with this video. I am used to Americans doing reviews using colloquial American speak and are usually inarticulate. They normally use a lot of filler words and have limited vocabulary. The way you broke the experience down and the nuance of the culture that you covered is amazing. Very refreshing. P.S, I say this knowing there are South African RUclipsrs and podcasters who are inarticulate and use colloquial language too. It does feel like being robbed of a perspective because the person cannot articulate their view

I have noticed that people have built a little bit of Italy , Britain and even Greece in our country. I have also seen Europeans adapt our building methods ,and claiming it as their own . Having seen the Mokhorotlo building in Lesotho, i was inspired.

When people come to RSA, they mostly just go to the city. Joburg, Cape Town and maybe Durban. And they will go on a safari but that is only one tiny bit of SA. People then have this misconception about us, but we are the country that practices our Africanness without shame. We love our cultures so much. We honour our ancestors openly, which is something that most African countries shun. So to question our Africanness is very hypocritical.

One can only understand something once you immerse yourself with people of the land, you are talking from experience. The same people who paddle lies are here denying i bet those who have never been in the country if they have they have isolated themselves and have a narrow mindset. They have never set their feet in the rural areas, never been to cultural activities..
Ashley those like you get what you are saying completely, those who are seeking will discover what you are referring to is so true no pretence..
Talking about SA not being African enough, an obvious example Amapiano although it has adopted various genres/ influences it has managed to be authentical in the use of instruments, languages used It represents culture, style and everyday life of South Africa.

Ashley I love your genuine embrace of South Africa. You can’t fake it, because it is written all over your face. Yes, South Africa is beautiful real authentic African country. My biggest love and respect for South Africa is the fact that as much as what they went through with the colonialists they were able to cling tight to their chests their culture. They are lucky though, as one of few African countries that the colonialists helped plan, build and not just take, steal and cart away the resources as they done on the majority of African countries. And I think the reason was that because they planned to stay tight.

South Africa is definitely an African country. The way some people depict Africa is so westernized point of view. When it comes to Africa everyone refers to poverty, war and hunger. Yes it is true but the continent is so vast...so continue your journey to this beautiful and développed country but try also to visit Egypt and Morroco then you will see the diversity of Africa. In Morroco and Egypt you will feel the strong eastern flavour coming from the Arab influence. For my point of view Pan-Africanism is more an utopia than a reality African exchange and understanding should be more appropriate...you should be proud of your journey. Happy new year 2024 and best wishes.

Ashley, there are other defeats of the British on record. The Asante Kingdom (Ghana) defeated the British force (who had set up a colony in the coast) in 1824 but made peace in 1831 when the British will not stop coming (all that gold, right) and so, avoided conflict for the next 30 years. In 1863, under the next King, (ruled 1834-67), the Asante again challenged the British by sending forces to occupy the coastal provinces.
