    In this video:
    The Brushy Mountain Penitentiary, where they used to house some of the worst of the worst criminals, is located on the eastern side of Frozen Head State Park in the Tennessee mountains. Although escape attempts were rare, the prison’s ideal location reduced the chances of prisoners safely making it back to civilization. Beyond being a maximum security prison, if an inmate did happen to evade the guards and get over the two exterior walls of the penitentiary, the Tennessee mountains might as well have been a gigantic third wall.

      "Today I Found Out" I'm addicted to your videos! I looked at the clock after watching this one, & realized I'd been binge-watching for nearly 9 hours. If I hadn't needed a bathroom break, I'd still be at it! Sadly, I must stop for the night, as I my alarm is set for only 4 hours from now. I'm sure I'll be back to enjoying your entertaining & educational videos after a bit of sleep. I have chemotherapy treatments scheduled for every day this week, & watching you gets me through them. Your voice & delivery of the topics really lift my spirits. Thank you Simon. I subscribe to your other channels as well. Keep the great info coming!

    Fun fact: on April 3rd, 2017, a 15th person named John Kelly from Maryland managed to finish the race in 59 hours, 32 minutes, and 30 seconds. This wasn't mentioned because the channel posted this video in February 26th, 2017.

      @fabianneuschmidt160 6 лет назад +15

      @@knickersbrown yes, Gary Robbins collected all the necessary pages but arrived 6 seconds too late. Additionally, he took a wrong turn near the end, and thus arrived from the wrong side. His route was actually longer than the one he should have taken, so without the wrong turn he probably would have made it.

    This sounds so incredible. Not racing for prizes but just for the honor to enter the race and IF you finish it, you're rewarded with a cheap lawnchair and telling stories. That's incredible. I think the point is, you must really love ultramarathoning to do this. If you dont love it, you'd be discouraged easily, but if you love it, you've earned the right to try and if you try and succeed, your stories will be told again and again.

    Great disparity in the comments between those who have first seen the Barkley Marathons documentary on Netflix (which is awesome, go check it out), and those learning about it here for the first time. Personally, I absolutely loved Cantrell, who goes by Lazarus Lake, or just 'Laz' in the movie. The race it not about him. Think about it, he loses money on the endeavor each year (each racer providing $1.60, a pack of Camels, and a flannel shirt or packet of socks is not reimbursing him for his time). The racers are there to test their limits, and he provides them exactly what they are looking for.

    Well the first step to winning is realising that despite it being called a marathon it really isn't. You don't run. On level ground 100 miles in 60 hours would be piss easy. You can take two 15 hour breaks and still beat it walking at just over the "having a conversation" pace of 3 miles an hour. You "just" have to do that through some of the most gruelling terrain out there.

    I'm confused about a couple things:
    1. Is the *_sacrificial lamb_* someone he puts there on purpose to see if the other people can spot them, or is it an actual cliche rich-dentist-type who thinks they can compete with the other hikers?
    2. If the course gets bigger every time someone completes it, won't it eventually be too big for the area where it happens? Or does he just add more laps rather than increasing the physical area covered?

    • @MinecrafterPiano

      Ojisan The sacrificial lamb is just somebody who the creator thinks wont be able to finish for either a physical or mental reason. They mat still be an ultra-athlete, but have a feature that makes him think they cant do it.

    I've watched a lot of videos on this channel, but this is the one that made me finally subscribe. What a crazy random thing you decided to talk about! And I appreciate it so much, as well as the details you went into. AWESOME. I would love to be a spectator at that race, but I bet even that would be too physically challenging for me, as I'd have to camp out for days in the freezing wasteland. And there's no way of knowing when or where the race IS unless you are participating anyway.

      Probably because that is what the word means.
      According to the dictionary, the definition of the word 'decimate' is: "1 - kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage or part of.
      2 - drastically reduce the strength or effectiveness of (something)."
      Historically, yes, it did mean to take a 10th of something, but in modern use it is common and correct to use it to describe destruction or weakening of something.

Just as disciplinary punishment.
