    I built a similar project when I lived in Oklahoma in 1977, before we had computers, much less RUclips, but I built a board and board rather than a board and batten - (210 feet long). That way, it looked the same from both sides - what I call a good neighbor fence - and it allowed the wind to blow through. Back then I hand sanded each redwood board and sanded off my fingerprints doing it. This was before I even heard of gloves, power nailers, electric screwdrivers, and pocket holes. I grade you 100% on this one, and I saved a link for posterity, just like I saved all those home improvement books from the '70's.

I also appreciate you explanation it was simple but at yhe same time in detail. Anyone wanting to build a fence that does not know how should not have any issues following the directions you gave. Amazing job and there's lots of stuff I would have never bothered doing. Even though I've never built a fence myself. BUT. I've patched plenty of old, falling down fences, and one thing maybe you could have done is something I swore I'd do if I built one - put some fall on the top surface of each of your runners / rails (and your very top board) so the water runs off them. When I patch up fences I often have to do what you showed in your first video in this series - nail a whole new board over the top of the palings because the rail underneath is too rotten to nail or screw into in places. I've looked at these fences after heavy rain and seen the water pooling in dips, concaves, or cracks in the rails, right where they are most rotten. I always thought having some taper-off would have extended the life of those boards by many years. I'd probably even do it (in my own OCD way) to the curb you poured. Have the formwork on one side just a hair higher (say, 1/8 of an inch?) than the other so that water runs off.

    Great series on the fence! Would love to see a little short clip on the final costs. The only thing I might have done different would be something different with the rebar in the curb part. Wasn't crazy about rebar ends touching the ground to hold up the mesh. Might have cut some PVC stubs instead. The great thing is that you can see the hard work you put into it. GREAT JOB ! Stumbled upon your fence project video, watched them all. LOL, watching you with ALL that OVERKILL........reminds me of myself. Did our fence 25+ years ago. Not with all THAT overkill but some. Home D. bought sections but still standing. Friends and family we know had fences put in, are long down and gone. Ours is still standing, all pickets still intact. Sometimes overkill pays. Been thinking about redoing the fence. Was thinking about something like you came up with. Only thing being here in the NYC area the curb between the fence posts would have to be below the frost line to make it "bullet proof" overkill. Just trying to justify that, being that the old fence is still standing almost 30 years, don't think I got another 30 years, LOL. Really nice fence you got there, weedwacker friendly and still pleasant to look at. Your videos are easy watching. Going to keep checking in. If you ever finish fencing off the rest of the yard would be interested to see the final look. Thank you.

I want to suggest that you use a string to help keep the nails in a straight line, instead of using a chalk line. You nailed them in a straight line anyway. I've been a carpenter for over 35 years. And in that time I've never seen anything as over done as this fence. I found myself amazed of how much thought you put into so many aspects of building a fence. That truly didn't need to be. And to be quite frank with all the nights you must have lost sleep over figuring all this out. I think you missed the more logical way of doing things. I don't mean any of this as an insult because I think your fence speaks for itself. And I think you did a great job. Great work, really came out nice. Tarring the entire 4x4 post would give you much greater piece of mind, especially the top of the posts (that's where the water is wicked in from and rot begins ). Been building fences for 35+ years, so I'm just telling you what I run across all the time. You do fine work, but to replace a 4x4 post with that cement footer will be very timely. At least tar the tops of the posts

    • @dl6317
      @dl6317 3 месяца назад

      I was actually thinking the same thing, not just about the posts, but even the pickets. I am thinking that the HOA would have a problem with any black tar showing on the posts etc... Perhaps a clear sealant that can be redone every 5 or 10 years just to eliminate the wicking issue. Also, does it matter that wind can't make it's way through? I think of tornadoes in those areas. Lastly, I love the cement posts but if they do get bent by mother nature, utility truck, etc...are the impossible to replace?

  • @NilasSurionX
    @NilasSurionX 2 месяца назад

    I really like that cement line along the property line. I wish that and Galvanized Steel Posts were standard so that the Foundation of the fence would last forever and you just have to replace the rails, pickets and trim.

    Super nice. Nothing like taking time if you have it to dial everything in so well. On the nail line instead of a chalk line you could have strung a line top and bottom, slid the slats behind them and strung another line for the middle after the top and bottom were nailed. That would have been overkill though your line was good on it's own.

    Good job, similar to what I do to build fences, except I use fence paint instead of tar.

    Great looking fence. I also live in Texas and my pickets shrink and bend considerably within 6 months. How is your fence holding up? I’m assuming with the sturdiness it hasn’t changed much. Can you post updated pics? Thank you for sharing your experiences.

    Could you have used metal hangers to install the cross braces?

    I have to say I'm surprised a man like you would ever become involved with a HOA. I'd never tolerate that nonsense.
    Your fence is beautifully done and will outlast both of us, hehe.

      Where I live in Texas unless you live in the country home are all in subdivisions with HOA's. Thanks for watching all the videos.

    I would have notched out the 4x4s to allow the horizontal stretchers to screw in face grain to face grain. And connect the stretchers with half laps so the end grain isnt exposed.

    You should use a laser lvl to get your nails lined up and you would not have to worry about a chalk line being left on it.

    DIY is so much better - you can do it how you want. 👍
    As a bonus - better than professional builder, which uses lowest cost denominator. 🤓

    Would it have been better or worse to ramp the sides of the curb out past the cofferdams for the posts so that there was already a slope for the rain to flow down and the topsoil to butt up against instead of keeping it with those flat walls? Doesn't that encourage the soil to separate from the concrete when it dries out in the sun, then leave those faces exposed to water wear and pooling again?

    I built my own fence around my house. I did it the traditional way. Except I used deck screws. The fence has been up now almost four years. It has its own issues. I had all my post in perfect alignment but a couple of them leaned somehow. I wish I knew what happened. But my neighbors said it is over kill using screws. Well since then several have hired professionals to build their fences and they have started to fall down. We are I a windy area prone to heavy storms. My fence has needed no repairs from Mother Nature. I did have to trim the bottom of my gate recently as the ground growth has become so thick that it began to drag. After the trimming of the gate it swings a much better.
    Very nice fence work though. I have a great feeling your fence will out last many fences. I’m sure it will outlast mine.

    I built 2 fences just a few months ago, #1 rule with a fence don't rush or it will look like crap, take your time think out your strategy, build strong and straight and don't strip your screws or else they won't be doing much good.

    I'm wanting to put up a privacy fence around my back yard. However, my yard slopes a bit so doing a curb would be more of a challenge for me.

    It does not make Any sense to spend more money on PT lumber if it is Not going to be in contact with the ground or foundation. It will all last the same amount of time if it is simply sitting in the elements.
