You weren't good until you could perform this competently. It was a staple at concerts. Learning this piece well was part of your ascent up to first chair.
I did this in 8th grade. Both middle schools did this piece for the bridges concert with our high school freshman band. I miss my band instructor. He quit teaching and now works as an apple employee in retail.
I remember playing this in ‘93-94 with the Clarinet. I had a karaoke machine, that recorded 4 tracks at the same time, so I would play 1&2 chair B flat clarinet, and 1&2 chair Alto Saxophone just to record multiple layers of this song at the same time. ( On cassette tapes )
This is my all time favorite concert piece. I played this in middle school. I majored in music and have played most of the classic literature. This piece shows that a piece of music doesn't have to be extremely difficult to be great music.
Band, sophomore year. Director gave me the option of choosing the next piece for us to play, and I picked this one out of curiosity. I still think the woodwinds and flutes hate me to this day because there are 5 flats in their section, if I'm not mistaken 😂
2:39 listening to this part is so funny cause we had a bari sax (myself) and a tuba and nobody told us to crank it back, so we were just blaring it 💀 I think it added a march-y feeling to the piece which honestly our director was digging lol
Feels like James Swearingen only wrote this composition and everything else he wrote is a variation on it....(I'd call him the Nickelback of composers, but he's actually interesting...)
