this piece makes me really emotional because a week before the concert we performed this, one of my closest friends whom is also in band's father passed away. my director left the seat open for him and dedicated this song to his father, every time i hear it it reduces me to tears. he was in the audience and the way my mom described him and his brother's reaction to this piece broke my heart. it just goes to show how much music can impact someone.
Tucker Grimes have you ever seen someone close to you lose someone they love? even if i wasn’t personally close to his father, i saw how much he hurt and was there through it all.
I still get goose bumps every time I hear this and think of HS band days when band director would make us play anything from James Swearingen!!! Such beautiful times and music!!!
Played this in high school, but our trumpets couldn't handle the solo so it was transposed to a French horn solo and played by me. Forever in love with this song! 😍
Love this song!! Remember loving all James Swearingen's songs in Jr High and High School band. I LOVE that he never neglected the low brass section! :)
Don't get yourself down because you're 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th chair! All parts to the music are as equally important as the first chair, remember that. 7 year Trumpet player, 5 years on the Mellophone, and 3 on the Tenor Saxophone.
Played this back in 1988 as part of our 8th grade band repertoire. Loved it then, love it now. This and 'The Planets - Jupiter' by Holst were my favorites.
i absolutely loooove this song especially at the slower tempo. i play the flute & i'm a senior this year. my band is playing this for our winter cncrt & every time we play through this i think about all the obstacles and everything i have been through for the last 4 yrs; all the great and not so great things and the times of happiness and sad. this song just touches my heart like no other and it is a great piece to finish my very last cncrt (i graduate early) as a high school student
I enjoy following along with my flute for this. I love how flute and trumpet play big parts in this piece. Truly beautiful and majestic. Definitely fits the name
I've been looking for this song for years and somehow the title just came to me. We played this in our middle school orchestra 30 years ago. WOW!!! I still love this beautiful song…and, yes, that flute solo is amazing.
We played this song at four of our concerts, and I played bass clarinet, first clarinet, first alto saxophone, and baritone saxophone. It was a TON of fun! And its just a beautiful piece.
Trombone melody is badass. I remember playing this years ago in middle school... 1st bone, 1st chair. Ohhhhh what a privilege. This song and Novena for wind ensemble... Those were the days.
I played this in the beginning of my 8th grade year, I absolutely love this song plus I got flute solos. We decided that the soft parts would be played as a solo, and I got them all! =D
At our last high school football game (My sister told me this because I'm too young), the band takes forever to get on the bus because the start with the marching song that year and work back until there's only seniors playing. They don't play the whole peice but, the first comment reminded me of that so I thought I would sshare a cool tradition.
This song and When Angels Weep ( D. Shaffer) were the songs that I really connected to emotionally in band. I sitll remember how great this song was to play almost 7 years after the fact. Both beautiful songs. If you have the honor to play these songs atm in band please cherish the times you get to play them with your bandmates. As corny as it sounds this song brings back so many good memories.
Played this piece for the first time in class in preparation for a joint concert between a junior high and high school band. I got so excited because 0:57 reminded me so much of Star Trek :DD
Though I enjoy the melody that woodwinds and trumpets play, I enjoy the lower brass melody parts more in songs. They have a really deep feeling that I can never get over.
I played this piece on trombone last year for band, but I absolutely Love to play the flute solo...This entire piece--even the tuba part--is absolutely beautiful! :)
I got to play this in the school band in 10th grade. Conducted by my favorite band teacher. That was our last concert with him before he left for another school. I miss him so much
wow, i played this song back in JR High all the way in 91....can't believe i actually found it on here...I played the tuba part...We sucked at this song, and we proved it at competition
i love band because all the music that we play just gives me chillss and makes me tear cuz of the sound nd how everything just fits together so perfectly...
Well just played this song at concert and our Band was bad they didn't practice and didn't learn their part. I'm a great flute player but I hope that next year our band will learn to practice and learn their part. I hope that other people will sound great next year!!
OMG!!! :D I love this songgg~ When I play the melody on my trombone, it makes me feel so... Majestic! :P My middle/high school band is playing this and 'Pomp and Circumstance' for senior grad., and being the only trombonist (very small band), I get to play WELL and LOUD!
AMAZING! I have never heard a peice so beautiful Flutes were fantastic, nice vibrato Brass has a beautiful fat tone So peaceful beautiful job I can't beleive that i am gonna have the opertunity to work with this composer it is an absolute honor.
I'm auditioning on this piece tomorrow and it will detrimine our seats for the rest of the year..... I'm really excited but really nervous at the same time. I want to do this piece justice even if I don't get a first part or even a second part!! I play clarinet and am auditioning on the first part! Wish me luck!!!
Same! I played that solo it last year and I didn't think it was very exciting (though I WAS excited there was even a baritone solo at all =]) but whatever floats your boat!
In the 7th grade I played this as the only euphonium. That translated one of the parts from a section part to an unglorified solo. Needless to say, I was terrified but loved it.
I thought this sounded very familiar, then I broke out an old CD when I played in a Knights of Columbus honors band and this was on it. Great tune and really back memories of my musician days (which are now long gone). Thanks for the memories.
His music is formulaic but great for school bands, every instrument gets fun lines, theres always a slow section to work on phrasing and long lines, and some fun fast parts for percussion and low brass. No, you would not want to program more than one in a concert, but I have never done one and had students complain about not having enough to do. Some of his harmonizing tends to use some less-common notes, so it forces younger players to work a little. In general, much love for Jimmy S!
Played this 7th grade with symphonic band. We went to Virginia for a music festival. We were the only middle schoolers and won 1st place against all the high schoolers. Good times..
this piece makes me really emotional because a week before the concert we performed this, one of my closest friends whom is also in band's father passed away. my director left the seat open for him and dedicated this song to his father, every time i hear it it reduces me to tears. he was in the audience and the way my mom described him and his brother's reaction to this piece broke my heart. it just goes to show how much music can impact someone.
Why would you care about someone else's dad?
Tucker Grimes have you ever seen someone close to you lose someone they love? even if i wasn’t personally close to his father, i saw how much he hurt and was there through it all.
Gay
So you said he died a week before the concert but when you played this he was there with his brother and your mom said he loved it?
@@cube6500 it’s not you dumbass

Agreed, always loved playing this song in HS
Played this in high school, but our trumpets couldn't handle the solo so it was transposed to a French horn solo and played by me. Forever in love with this song! 😍
You guys must have had a shitty band even here in Hawaii our freshman trumpet players can handle this solo and even harder ones
Love this song!! Remember loving all James Swearingen's songs in Jr High and High School band. I LOVE that he never neglected the low brass section! :)
Just wish he would have written something where the low brass was main feature. Would have been AWESOME.
I played this song when I was in 7th grade. So many good memories playing the trumpet solo
The First 8 seconds are golden
epic flute
My bestie has that solo in our band! 😊

I played this song in band in 7th grade. Got the trumpet solo at 0:58...was possibly the best band experience so far :)
Currently getting ready to play the same solo!
Don't get yourself down because you're 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th chair! All parts to the music are as equally important as the first chair, remember that.
7 year Trumpet player, 5 years on the Mellophone, and 3 on the Tenor Saxophone.
Absolutely
Im at the end of 18 other alto saxes

This always used to remind of star trek when i played it back in junior high in 87. still does.

Hi 11 years passed
song is freaking amazing!
I played this in 1990 for the Singapore Youth Festival Band Presentation along with Swearingen's "Invicta".
