    here's a tip for ya: get the come along out, make or get some sort of an large shovel like hook or anker hooking it behind a nice and deep chunk of the dam, hook the other end up to a down stream tree and start coming along till the dam breaches. Reset and repeat the procedure on several different spots to divide the beaver efforts to repair the damage.

    Hi,
    And many thanks for the upload of this considerately managed Beaver Dam removal. I am interested in all animals and where the accession is right and the water shallow this is the right thing to do. I have an acquaintance in Canada whom manages a stretch of a pretty small river and although the water is not much above 18" to 24" deep where the Beavers there build Dams it takes very little time before water raised by it is stopping everyday life like not being able to put washing out in the back garden.
    The manager used a pretty small back hoe to clear the two places the beavers seem to like to build their dams, they were pretty small and it could have easily been done by the managers two children go 13 and 11, and maybe they could have taken photo’s and made a school project you know.
    It definitely seemed like OTT to me when he first broke down lots of trees to gain access and then reaching the farthest side of the band, almost in one fell swoop moved the whole of the dam.
    Not really the way to act with such a pretty little river running across their back garden. Still I suppose it was quick and in his situation time is money?
    I must say I am very pleased that as you said, you are not putting any more effort into the removal than the Beavers put into building it in the first place. Using the machine when probably less than an hour by his two kids who are always playing in the river anyway would have been my choice.
    Thanks for the upload
    Take care

    We always made multiple openings. If you can relocate them to an area that needs them it’s great. Especially dry areas with less vegetation beavers create wetlands and bring back habitat. They can over populate and flood areas quickly. So love hate relationship.

    • @Spanosmusic
      @Spanosmusic Год назад +2

      Believe it or not what the beavers do is also beneficial to the salmon. If you think about it, the salmon have been successfully dealing with beaver dams long before Europeans settled here and decimated beaver populations. It's estimated there were between 100 to 400 million beavers. Without the beavers the entire water system of the United States had been changed. Only in recent years has it been realized what a crucial role this keystone animal plays in the ecosystem and water system.

    Most of the complainers below have very obviously never lived in an area where these little blighters frequent but they can theoretically flood vast areas of land that was not flooded before. PRO'S: Opening up wetlands and fosters new fishing areas,,,,,,CON'S: Floods ones cabin and outhouse so fast that people can literally wake up to it. Especially if the dam went up on a small creek with good flow. You city folks should stick to what you know,,,skateboarding.

    • @randywinner111
      @randywinner111 8 лет назад +7

      Pretty much nothing, I've been on a bench 15 feet above highest recorded 100 year flood plane, river breaks up, ice starts pushing up the bank till it over flowed 50 feet away from river and took the trailer off the blocks. Go figure. Alaska living is different than anything you southerners will ever comprehend. And I stand by what I said, not all Beaver dams are bad, but the ones that are must be done away with. I've seen very knowledged and capable back woodsman that built beautiful sturdy cabins well off flood plains, but that didn't stop the avalanche from taking the cabin two years later. Shit happens. So taking out a dam or two lessens that threat. Stick scateboarding,,,lol.

      You know it is easy for granola eating wannabe tree hugging eco warriors to spout about animal rights and all kinds of other environmental bullshit but the first real bout of winter in the North Lands (And Montana winters can be just as brutal as Alaskan winters) and these same folks whine about how cold it is. Then they whine about the bears. Then they will whine about the mosquitoes (and yours in Alaska are like a swarm of Vampire Sparrows). Then they complain about how dangerous guns are and in Alaska these same assholes have no clue that the bears there will break into your home and eat everyone! They also got no clue that your bears are the size of a VW bus! They also have no clue that is you like hiking and want to live forget the bear mace, get a .44mag at minimum and a good sporting breed of dog that likes cold weather. These same clowns have no clue how silent and ninja like a bear can be.
      These same people THINK they understand nature. Flooding can be a very serious issue they just do not want to get. I know why you break beaver damns. Its called Spring Thaw. This city boy knows country life and I am sitting back in agreement panning the other comments here and damn if some people just got no clue.
      Sit back and enjoy being right. But you are wrong about what most of these Emo city slickers are all about... it is not skateboards these days, They are all about Hugging that god damn rainbow and Gubbinent checks as well as being brand whores (Ambecrombie and Fitch anybody?). There is nothing wrong with peace and tolerance but even that can get over done. I would bet the first time most of these people had to kill the chicken they were going to eat themselves instead of buying frozen chicken at a grocery store they would turn vegan fast.

    • @KingOfAllAnimals
      @KingOfAllAnimals 7 лет назад +8

      zeekthe hammer
      You hit the Nail on head. People think God gave us dominion of the world instead of us accepting stewardship of it. Then again Man made up the God we are taught so with that aside you are illustrating the same problem idiots have moving to Arizona. There are places in Arizona thick with Rattlesnakes and moving to these places and knowing there are poisonous snakes in the area and complaining about it is stupidity and ignorance incarnate. Same thing with retirees that move to Florida and act surprised when walking their their little Foo Foo an Alligator hops out of the pond they are walking by and eats their dog.
      If you live in Beaver country be ready to have to break beaver damns. It is one thing to be resigned to the fact you will have to act on what Beavers do but to gripe about how messed up Beavers are and want them exterminated is probably as about as dense and ignorant as a person can be.
      Its acceptable when a human damns a river but a Beaver dams a creek like nature intended them to and suddenly people freak out and cry about the disasters the Beavers are causing when people develop in areas that by all rights maybe they shouldn't. if some of these folks are worries about their cabins being flooded maybe they should build them on stilts.

I guess it might be an issue if you had a problem animal and knew someone who wanted the thing, but I suspect that that is not the norm. Nice work! I agree with you that getting water to move again is fun! I grew up in coastal Northern California hunting, fishing and hiking through the woods. I respect wildlife and I also understand man's need to re-adjust wildlife a bit in a controlled manner as you have done. I'm sure I raised a few eyebrows saying that I'm from California. I know, it's embarrassing. I had no control over where I was born. Believe it or not, there are still three or four of us left in Corruptifornia that have old world values.

      You haven't seen beavers in California because they were all trapped out as throughout the United States. However, they provide a crucial role in the ecosystem and are considered a keystone animal. In recent years it has been acknowledged that they are actually a vital part of the water system, especially in replenishing aquifers which drought stricken western states are now painfully aware of and are reintroducing beavers in many streams. If you're interested there are lots videos that demonstrate the benefits that beavers their dams, ponds, and wetlands they create provide, that's not to say that are places where they cause problems. There are also videos that demonstrate various ways to mitigate those problems.

      If you own the land where the beaver are damming it is good conservation to remove parts of a dam that the residents will repair. It is one of the best ways to take a beaver census so that you can plan population control, gasp that's right folks I mean fur coats.

    Before anyone jumps gown my throat. I would not want a beaver dam on my property and in many places they are a nuance and or danger. Having said that, I find the law stupid about transporting them. Many areas and or regions they are beneficial. I heard that Nevada is importing beavers. Their dams provide water in semi-arid regions year round. This great for other wildlife.

    Out of curiosity, would a chain saw cutting vertical cuts every 4-10 inches or so apart, starting from one edge of the of the dam, working towards the other side, speed up the dislodgement of the wood? Just asking.

      You do not want that set of chompers taking a hunk out of your shin..that's for sure.
      These things aren't just the little cuddly PETA type animal that they show in documentaries etc.They can be huge,I seen a pic of one a guy was holding up in a bar near the intersection of Rt 210 and 225 in Indian Head,MD back in the 90's.He was 5'6"-5'8" judging by him next to the bar and he had the head at chin level and the tail was laying flat on the floor.Huge MoFo!!!
