Just a tip (and please know I do not mean to be rude, just helpful): Most movies do not take place in real time. Now by the end of "Scream," everything does, in fact, work out timing-wise due to the reveal; however, the scene in Sidney's bedroom after the first attack. We, as the audience, are meant to assume that she is up for there for 5-10 minutes before Billy climbs through the window. But, from a filmmaker's perspective, the "jump scare" would be totally lost if we saw her full interaction with the 911 operator on the computer (which we know must have happened as Dewey/police show up). So, stylistically, Wes Craven chooses to "jump" right to the moment when Billy enters the window in order to make the jump scare effective. We know it to be true that 5-10 minutes had passed due to the arrival of Dewey and the police. Sidney did not make the 911 call, 3 seconds later Billy appears, and 4 seconds after that Dewey arrived with the police. We are not meant to take short span of time literally. The same thing at the beginning with Tristan saying the killer must be a "magician." The audience's responsibility is to suspend their belief that time goes by that we do not see (otherwise, this movie would take over two days to watch, instead of 1 hour and 45 minutes, if they showed every moment). Casey is on the phone call, fumbling with the lights, and then we see the aftermath. Wes Craven knows it is scarier to go quickly with this...rather than literally show her pausing/taking a moment with the light. Again, I do not mean this to be rude or anything, but I heard this similarly said on another one of your reactions, too, and wanted to point it out or else you are going to be very frustrated with some other horror movies you are bound to watch. We have to trust that most filmmakers do have an idea of what they are doing and are presenting the film to us in a specific way for a specific reason. At this time in the 1990s, it was stylistically expected to go fast, fast, fast and not always pause for every time jump. It is now why we have a resurgence of the 1970's/80's style mixed with the postmodern pace.
26:29 hanging in the closet is a black leather jacket. That is the same jacket he wore when fonzi jumped the shark. Henry still has this jacket to this day.
The irony is insane lol. 'Jumping the shark' became the term used when a film series/TV show exhausted itself creatively and started introducing exagerrated/extreme ideas far from the original purpose from that one sequence. I wonder if that was intentional being visually referenced in a film like this which is satirizing the 'dead' at the time slasher subgenre of horror....
You really have to check out the rest of the franchise now. They are just so much fun trying to figure out who the killer is. Honestly, there’s not a bad one in the bunch. They are all very good. Scream VII is filming soon for an early 2026 release.

The great thing about Scream was it was so self aware, in that it even though it is a serious subject it constantly refers to old Horror films and makes reference to the plot of them etc. It also spawned superb sequels, each on of them is great too and well worth a watch. You gotta do the sequels, the writing is just so clever. Wes Craven killing off the most famous person in the film in the first few minutes.! An incredible amount of such famous female actors in the Scream films just too many to mention.
It's important to realise the slasher film had become tired & "Scream" was so fresh in 1996 it virtually started it's own genre. It isn't a parody but a horror satire with all the characters & the audience in on the absurdity of horror films & horror movie logic that it is spoken by the cast in the film with exactly the same beats of a horror movie like Sidney going up the stairs instead of out the front door 😂😂😂
Two fun facts‼️ when Randy is saying “behind you Jamie”, is funny because his real name is Jamie. And Billy (skeet) didn’t mean to hit Stu (Matthew) in the head with the phone. 😂
also, when Billy was stabbed in the shoulder by the umbrella- the actor had missed Billys protection vest and that second scream was actually him in pain!
& that's Skeet in the costume behind Jamie, the rest of the time it's a stuntperson, but he begged Wes Craven to let him wear the costume just once in the movie
What the principal said to those students is what every teacher in existence has wanted to say at one point or another. I knew a few people who absolutely needed that treatment in high school 🤣
I’ve been waiting for this one 🎉I hope you guys watch the rest of the Scream franchise. They’re making Scream 7 right now! This is my favorite movie franchise by far!! Scream is basically its own horror genre. You guys are 100% right when you say these movies are a little silly and that they make fun of the horror genre. You’re going to LOVE the character developments. Loved the reaction!!
It's a satire of horror, that's the difference. The "comedy" is not something unintentional it's baked in. All the characters are in a horror movie but still do all the dumb things ppl in horror movies do beat for beat. What Scream does brilliantly is show it on screen & in knowing dialogue to an audience who know all the tropes of horror movie logic. Just groundbreaking in 1996!! 🥰
1. What I like most about doing this is watching people overthink it. 2. Cell phones weren't prevalent in 1996. 3. Dewey's superior IS the janitor since Wes Craven did the cameo as Freddy Kruger. 4. The principal was the Fonz/Henry Winkler. (one of Fonzie's jackets is on a coat hanger in the closet) 5. Tatum/Rose McGowan as long as I have a face.😝😈 6. I love how the inept killer keeps getting his ass kicked🤣 7. Fun fact: The reporter lady that ends saying "People have the right to know." is played by Linda Blair/Reagan from "The Exorcist".
This movie was revolutionary at the time. The first horror movie where the people on it have seen other horror movies. At this point horror was dead. The 80s was a heyday for slasher like Friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street, Chucky, Halloween, etc. but at this point it was a failing genre and this movie reinvigorated the genre by being a 90s version of that. Those franchises were bogged down by numerous rushed and bad sequels. This movie was a slasher for the 90s. The kids were sarcastic and meta about those old slasher movies, making this a movie that was funny and mocking those slashers while also being a clever slasher itself. A hard balancing act to pull off. You really had to be there at the time to understand why it blew up. A slasher movie for a new generation. And a movie that saved the genre.
He asked who the killer was in friday the 13th. Not who the killer was in friday the 13th part 2 or 3 or 4 so on and so forth. So he did in fact clarify.
Just thought y’all should know, this channel is becoming one of my favorites for reactions ❤️ I replayed the part with Gale yelling at Kenny 4 times 😭 y’all’s reactions were hilarious!!
The reporter that asks Sidney "How does it feel to be almost brutally butchered, people wanna know they have a right to know" is Linda Blair. She played Reagan, the main little girl in The Exorcist.
Scream is a Horror that is self-aware and pokes fun at its own genre. Did it by twisting tropes around, making things too obvious to the point you don't believe it and think it must be a red herring.
I love seeing reactions to people who haven't watched the movie before. It is easily in my top 10 favorite films of all time. I only wish that more people watching it for the first time realize it isn't meant to be taken seriously. It is a goofy film making fun of horror films but also commending them for what they are. Also if you watch it again knowing Matt Lillard is just a stupid kid who is a little nuts his character is so much more appreciated. At first he is annoying but if you re-watch the performance he gives is incredible.
Unfortunately, I find that more modern generations of viewers tend to be way too literal and judgmental. They lose something by not just embracing the ride.
A fun fact, it´s that Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) and David Arquette (agent Dewey), had a romance in the real life, like in the film (you can see the chemistry), and were married and had a daughter (Coco Riley Arquette). They´re not together since many years ago, but they had their story.
I feel like an old geezer saying this, but in the 90's, cell phones were rare, so home lines were more common. And most of them didn't come with caller ID. When the phone rang, you had literally no idea what was at the other end of the line. And at least for me, my parents told you to answer the phone and get a message. So while it may seem foreign nowadays, yeah, if the phone rang, you'd pick it up. and often converse with those at the other end -- because maybe the person calling isn't calling for you. Theyu may be a friend of your parents. Or your siblings. Anyone who was calling for one of you had one number to call.
The original script of the movie was titled "Scary Movie" (later changed to Scream) which would eventually be the name used for the parody movie by the Wayans brothers in the year 2000
the way you guys say how physotic Stu is shows how good Matthew lillard did, one of the best performances in a horror movie ever and really just in general
Sam seemed a bit flummoxed by this movie. It's a horror/comedy. Specifically, it's satire (and very "meta"). The film succeeds because the scary moments are scary and the funny moments are funny. Also, the murder mystery angle kept audiences guessing.
If you want to know who the killer is at what time, read on. Stu always uses the knife for his killstrike with BOTH hands. Stu is the one who attacked Sidney in her house the first time. When both run up the stairs and you listen carefully, he says "easy easy". He said the same thing before, when all his friends sat together in the park and discussed who the murderer was. He also tried to kill Sidney with both hands on the knife. Billy was the one who spoke to Sidney on the phone at that time, while Stu gained access to the house. Billy likes to STRANGLE his victims before stabbing them with just ONE hand on the knife. He killed the first victim. He choked her (she lost her voice) and then stabbed her one handed. But both killers were present at the first kill. That's why it didn't matter which door the first victim would have chosen. Both occupied one door each. Stu was then the one who hanged the first victim. When Sidney flees from him in his house, just before she falls out of the window, you can see dolls hanging from the ceiling. Practice material for Stu. Billy was the one who stabbed Dwight in the back with the knife and then choked Sydney in the police car before he tried to stab her. The same again at the end. Stu wanted to kill Randy, who was sitting on the couch, with both hands on the knife. Neither killer was in the school toilet. This was most likely really just a normal student who pranked Sidney. You can see them running through the school corridors. This student also did not have a knife in his hand when he Sidney "attacked". No kill was accidental. The first victims were Stu's ex and her new boyfriend for whom she left Stu. Both had to die because of it. In addition, she was sitting right next to Sydney at school, which was supposed to show Sydney that the killer is very close to her and she's next. The director had to die as a distraction so that all the students would leave Stu's house. Stu's girlfriend died because she was Sydney's best and only friend. In addition, Stu seems to be gay and in love with Billy and his girlfriend means nothing to him. All other victims arose from the chaos afterwards, but were not planned that way.
according to an interview they gave later, Neve Campbell (Sidney) and Matthew Lillard (Stu) didn't get the copy of the script where Billy explains the real reason why her mom was killed. They were given copies with a different motive for her death so they are genuinely shocked by what Skeet (Billy) says
Definitely watch Scream 2-6. Also, check out the movies Scary Movie(2000), Jennifer’s Body(2009), I Know What You Did Last Summer(1997), Jeepers Creepers(2001), Trick ‘r Treat(2007), The Faculty(1998), Final Destination(2000), and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer(1998). Also, the janitor dressed as Freddy Krueger was an easter egg because Wes Craven who wrote and directed A Nightmare on Elm Street(1984) is the director of Scream 1-4.
this is my favorite horror franchise and this one is my favorite of the series. I watch it all the time! I actually got to meet Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich (Stu and Billy) last year at a convention! 💜
Okay, Casey and Steve weren't killed until after 10 (according to Tatum) who also states that Stu was with her the night before. So I'm guessing that means Stu came over after the murders since that might mean he was with her most of the night, giving him an alibi in her mind
I had no idea just how involved Drew Barrymore was on Scream until only a few years ago. Drew was an uncredited & unofficial producer on Scream & it can't be said enough how influential she was on it. It was Drew who went to Wes Craven to lobby for him to direct the film 1st & it was Drew who insisted she should play Casey & not Sidney she was cast for. This video from her talk show details her perspective from 1996 - ruclips.net/video/C7q90h5PQvM/видео.htmlsi=5WxkdZIfpltcRhd2
Well, I remember watching back in the day, when it came out. I was 16, I think. I grew up watching horror stuff. But movies were all "old". The genre was kind of dying. Wes Craven (also directed Nightmare on Elm street) delivered this at the right moment, to "bring back to life" horror movies. It was kind of an upgrade to what was previously known as horror. The following decade was filled with movies similar to Scream. I know what you did last summer and Final destination being two examples. It definitely brought horror back. And we didn't think it was goofy at the time.
in the video store there's a nice little hint. when randy' screams everyone's a suspect. the camera cuts and there's a movie poster of Jamie Lee Curtis (scream queen) the title "Mother's boys"
Billy Loomis is one of my FAVORITE villains ever! Sooo cold blooded, psychopathic, slimy, and devious. The scene that sold it for me is how he callously tells Sydney to get over her mom’s death like it was just a minor inconvenience rather than a great personal tragedy. 😈
That part where Billy gets himself suspected of being the killer, then cleared. I think Wes Craven took that from a certain Agatha Christie novel. Won’t say which one but here are a couple of hints: came out between 1925-1935 and is NOT a short story Another thriller you would enjoy is WAIT UNTIL DARK (1967). Has one of the most intense home invasion scenes ever! Just dim the lights or turn them off during the last 8 minutes. Makes it easier to see the screen.
Ha I love that you picked up on Red Right Hand. That song always makes me think of Scream. But after watching Peaky Blinders, it definitely makes me think of that first.
Great reaction! Like others have said, you gotta watch Scream 2 (which some may argue surpasses the first), and if possible continue to the rest of the franchise. On a different note, Tatum's death felt like a victim a circumstances. Sydney needed to be isolated and Tatum was always by her side ever since Sydney was initially attacked.
You guys should react to 'I Know What You Did Last Summer from 1997, another great movie in what became the resurgence of horror movies in the late 90s. The writer of this movie, Kevin Wiiliamson, also wrote 'I know What You Did Last Summer' & 'Halloween: H20' as well as creating the Teen drama 'Dawson's Creek'.😊
I have watched dozen of these first time watching videos on this movie and every single one has someone demanding to know why the principal touched Sydney's chin the way he did. I'm wondering why i never noticed how creepy or sketchy that was when I watched this in the 90s...did we just not question this type of thing or did I not read that much into it? 👀
Actually, all these modern viewers saying that just annoys me. I get that it wouldn't be done nowadays... but context is everything. When it came out, we weren't bothered because we all knew that's Henry Winkler. Not only as Fonzie, but the least creepy guy in Hollywood. In universe... Woodsboro is a smallish, close knit town... and the Principal knows Sidney had lost her mother, so he's being comforting. The more modern generations are way too literal... and make too much out of every little thing
They were stabbing each other to look like they were left for dead by “the killer”. But regardless, yes they are psycho haha. And they should have waited til after they killed everyone first.
That's to show that they're not professionals at this lol. Ultimately, they're still just a couple teenagers. That's why when either's dressed as Ghostface they spend half the time getting their asses kicked. 😂
in hindsight you often notice the killer gives themselves away...or you can kind of tell who it might be: opening scene with Drew Barrymore, the killer asks "which door am i at" the answer is both. when the group are talking outside the school after Sidney was interviewed, Stu is talking too much about liver and gutting and Billy says "hey it's called tact fu%$ rag"
A few fun facts: 1. Kevin Williamson, the scriptwriter, confirmed that Stu was the one who killed Casey in the opening. 2. When Stu brings him out to Sidney, Neil Prescott is wearing the same clothes he was wearing early in the film. This means that Billy only talked to Sidney to distract her from Stu kidnapping her father. He even plays music so Sidney won’t hear the struggle.
Well, you don't watch Scream panels then because Matt and Skeet have confirmed that nobody on the production of Scream knows who killed who in the film, including Kevin.
@@BadMoonHorrors She never said Stu was with her *all* night. She said “Stu was with me last night”. She doesn’t specify if it was before or after the murders.
@@railenherman6482 Yes, she said exactly that, not "Stu was with me last night, apart from the 2 hours he would have needed to drive to Casey's, cut her and Steve to pieces and drive back." We have to trust that most filmmakers do have an idea of what they are doing and are presenting the film to us in a specific way for a specific reason. At this time in the 1990s, it was stylistically expected to go fast, fast, fast and not always pause for every time jump. It is now why we have a resurgence of the 1970's/80's style mixed with the postmodern pace.
Yes to this! Cut out the shoe leather as they day.
@@lennygriffin1149 Scream 2 and 3 are my least favorites, but the franchise is still a great franchise.
Fun fact: "Drive down to the McKenzies" said by Drew's dad to her mom in the beginning is taken from LAurie Strode telling the 2 kids she is babysitting in Halloween to go down to the McKenzies to call for help
Wooowww, all these years and I'm STILL picking up on new little tidbits like this lol.
@@dawb86 If you take anything away from this, know that whenever you are in trouble, you should just head down to the McKenzie's and they'll take care of you
The great thing about Scream was it was so self aware, in that it even though it is a serious subject it constantly refers to old Horror films and makes reference to the plot of them etc. It also spawned superb sequels, each on of them is great too and well worth a watch. You gotta do the sequels, the writing is just so clever. Wes Craven killing off the most famous person in the film in the first few minutes.! An incredible amount of such famous female actors in the Scream films just too many to mention.
wes craven was also in the film dressed as Fred, a school janitor lol 26:23
Best horror movie of the 90s and best opening scene in horror
28:52 Sheriff Burke picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
It tells you everything that will happen, including "there's always a reason to kill your girlfriend."
the whole franchise is great
Two fun facts‼️ when Randy is saying “behind you Jamie”, is funny because his real name is Jamie. And Billy (skeet) didn’t mean to hit Stu (Matthew) in the head with the phone. 😂
also, when Billy was stabbed in the shoulder by the umbrella- the actor had missed Billys protection vest and that second scream was actually him in pain!
@@courtneyleonard20 yes he had heart surgery as a kid & got hit in his scar & really hurt him!
& that's Skeet in the costume behind Jamie,
the rest of the time it's a stuntperson,
but he begged Wes Craven to let him wear the costume just once in the movie
@@courtneyleonard20 Yeah, I think Skeet Ulrich had an old collarbone injury and Neve jammed the umbrella right into it lol.
What I like about Ghostface is the fact If he is not a Trained serial killer , but very dangerous, although usually silly
24:32 - the reporter here is Lisa Canning. When this movie was being made she was a reporter for Entertainment Tonight.
1. What I like most about doing this is watching people overthink it.
2. Cell phones weren't prevalent in 1996.
3. Dewey's superior IS the janitor since Wes Craven did the cameo as Freddy Kruger.
4. The principal was the Fonz/Henry Winkler. (one of Fonzie's jackets is on a coat hanger in the closet)
5. Tatum/Rose McGowan as long as I have a face.😝😈
6. I love how the inept killer keeps getting his ass kicked🤣
The surprised reaction to the Nick Cave tune was so good! 😂
Watching reactors try to find logic in Scream is always hilarious to me🤣💀
He asked who the killer was in friday the 13th. Not who the killer was in friday the 13th part 2 or 3 or 4 so on and so forth. So he did in fact clarify.
Especially since the reboot, also called Friday the 13th, hadn't been made yet
@@WheresWaldo05 only Friday the 13th I knew was Jason. I prefer Nightmare on Elm's Street over Friday the 13th and Halloween
Honestly, I feel like no matter what Casey answered, Ghostface would've found a way around it.
The goofy moments are intentional. It’s camp and self aware.
There are 6 Scream movies so far with a 7th in production.
This one is "newer" but has the same older fabulous director as "A Nightmare in Elm Street". Both are Wes Craven movies.
"My parents are going to be so mad at me!" remains one of the best delivered lines of dialogue in any movie.
The quick response right before that at as well. "Peer pressure! I'm far too sensitive." 😂
Please, you HAVE to watch the sequels, all movies are great fun and very well done.
The original script of the movie was titled "Scary Movie" (later changed to Scream) which would eventually be the name used for the parody movie by the Wayans brothers in the year 2000
It is not an outright parody, more of an homage. But it is a horror comedy. Hopefully you watch the rest. All good movies. A very good story arc.
The film came out during the 3rd sesson of Friends.😊
the way you guys say how physotic Stu is shows how good Matthew lillard did, one of the best performances in a horror movie ever and really just in general
Idk why everyone wants them to continue lol
They clearly don’t like it and threw shade on it the entire time.
45:24
Even Stu is just standing there like "Wait Billy, I thought we were just doing this for fun!"
according to an interview they gave later, Neve Campbell (Sidney) and Matthew Lillard (Stu) didn't get the copy of the script where Billy explains the real reason why her mom was killed. They were given copies with a different motive for her death so they are genuinely shocked by what Skeet (Billy) says
The killer's voice and laughter in the first scene froze my blood out lol
Scream 2 is really good too
Definitely watch Scream 2-6.
You should definitely watch the sequels, they're all really good (the third one is the weakest, but it's still really fun)!
And Skeet Ulrich was rather handsome and sexy (and still is)
Every time gale says "your mother's murder was last years hottest court case ". I expect Gale to be like "remember, it was all over court TV"
That part where Billy gets himself suspected of being the killer, then cleared. I think Wes Craven took that from a certain Agatha Christie novel. Won’t say which one but here are a couple of hints: came out between 1925-1935 and is NOT a short story
Another thriller you would enjoy is WAIT UNTIL DARK (1967).
A lot of people miss the joke that Jamie Kennedy is the actor's name that is saying look behind you Jamie
My sister and I were laughing and getting dirty looks from people in the theatre...we were like HIS name is Jamie...It's meant to be funny!!
Most people got it
@@chinyereugwu9431 yes most did
You need to watch all the scream movies it’s my favourite horror franchise there are 6 all together grate reactions ❤😂
@@anomalysakawendy5096 I have to agree we didn't overanalyze it just took it as a comforting gesture.
This movie is so funny it’s a classic
They were stabbing each other to look like they were left for dead by “the killer”. But regardless, yes they are psycho haha. And they should have waited til after they killed everyone first.
That's to show that they're not professionals at this lol. Ultimately, they're still just a couple teenagers. That's why when either's dressed as Ghostface they spend half the time getting their asses kicked. 😂
@@dawb86 exactly!
What I like is the reporter at 19:54 is Linda Blair, from The Exorcist.
in hindsight you often notice the killer gives themselves away...or you can kind of tell who it might be:
opening scene with Drew Barrymore, the killer asks "which door am i at" the answer is both.
when the group are talking outside the school after Sidney was interviewed, Stu is talking too much about liver and gutting and Billy says "hey it's called tact fu%$ rag"
A few fun facts:
@@YoungBlood085 Kevin confirmed it in 2009 on his Twitter.
So why would Tatum lie about being with Stu at the time of the Steve & Casey murders?
@@BadMoonHorrors She never said Stu was with her *all* night. She said “Stu was with me last night”. She doesn’t specify if it was before or after the murders.
@@railenherman6482 Yes, she said exactly that, not "Stu was with me last night, apart from the 2 hours he would have needed to drive to Casey's, cut her and Steve to pieces and drive back." It makes no sense to mention they were together if it wasn't for the whole night or at least the time of the crime and at that point they already knew when the murders had happened.
I've never seen sream. This should be good 😂
