  • On this day in Tudor history, 14th August 1473, Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, was born.
Margaret Pole is an interesting lady - the niece of Edward IV, Countess of Salisbury in her own right, governess to Mary I... and she came to a rather awful and sticky end.
Let Claire Ridgway, founder of the Tudor Society, tell you a bit more about this fascinating Tudor lady and what happened to her.

Her son was guilty of his mothers death just by saying & having it in print about the great devorse, he knew Henry wouldn't let him get away with this completely, "I'l make him weep tears of blood", & one after the other all those left in England were executed, doupt anyone could be so bad as to take 11 strikes of the axe, me thinks she hated Henry 8th & knew she'd not go to the slaughter like a lamb, they didn't even build a gallows for her, just placed the block on the ground. She wouldn't let Henry 8th kill her quick & move on hence she dodged the axeman & runing from him made it a bloody afair, this so Henry would be told she died not as a lamb but as the mother of the true heir of the thrown Henry sat on. R.I.P ⚘

She had an extremely sad life after Henry the 7th became king and I think some 10 years afterwards her innocent brother was executed when he didn't even have the mentality of no more than about a twelve-year-old by the time he was 18. That was so sad because that poor young man didn't even know what the scaffold was when he was going up.
Henry the 8th wanted their family executed because of some said Traders letters the family received from Margaret son Reginald Pole. Reggie with a cardinal in Italy and I think Henry was just angry that he could not ever catch Reggie himself or have his Hitman do it for him.
Margaret was always the sweetest person and was even the governess to Henry Tudor's oldest daughter Mary.

It gets more and more difficult to maintain any admiration for Henry VIII despite some of the good things he did accomplish. Even looking at events like this through Medieval eyes and standards of the time, it's hard to imagine the cruelty and barbaric behavior of this man, although we certainly still have plenty of the same in our times. Nothing new under the sun. Rest in peace, Margaret. Thank you, Claire, for giving us lots to think about.

Margaret sounds like an interesting woman who met an absolutely horrid end. I too, do not understand how Henry could be so cruel to an old woman.
But he probably would have seen her only by her bloodline and the fact that he couldn’t get to her son and so he took it out on her. What a sad end.
Thank you for bringing us all aspects of Tudor history and not shying away from the gritty stuff.
Can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring! And as always, I love your top!

Hanging out with Henry gives new meaning to "one day you're in the next day you're out". Tudor history is fascinating. I greed and lust for power made it sure that Henry would always have people around him, most of which assumed "it wouldn't happen to them". Interesting how often those assumptions were wrong and then along with the true plotters there were so many innocents that went to the block.

While many of Henry VIII's actions that seem cruel to us were motivated by political necessity. the execution of this poor woman is inexcusable. She was no threat to anyone, and did not receive even the pretense of a trial. May she rest in peace.

Another enlightening & informed video, Claire: many thanks! The first two Tudor monarchs treated Margaret shamefully. Henry VII forced Margaret to marry a non-royal relative of his mother's, a marriage which degraded Margaret, a Princess of the House of York. Henry VIII repaid Margaret's decades of loyal service by executing her -- strictly in order to punish her son, Reginald Pole. I choose to remember Margaret as a Christian martyr, as she earned that title through a lifetime of self-sacrifice.

'The Spanish Princess' employed dramatic license however, it did acquaint the public with Margaret Pole. It portrays her very sympathetically which she deserves. If a person was ever star-crossed, it was her. Of course Henry imprisoned and killed her because of his rage at Reginald Pole and I'm sure he would have enjoyed doing his worst to Reginald himself. • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  5 лет назад +3

Gareth Russell points out that the sending of clothes wasn't actually down to Catherine herself, they were just made by the queen's tailor and an order was put i at the same time with the king's tailor for an identical delivery for Lord Lisle. The order for both came from the Privy Council. So it was actually nothing to do with Catherine.

I know many people have already said this but how Henry viii could justify killing Lady Pole is beyond me. I understand her son had Plantaganet blood but still his father ruled and he afterwards without being overthrown by the Poles, so why now that she was an elderly lady would he kill her!? Makes absolutely no sense to me, especially after she showed her loyalty to the King thru service to him and his daughter Mary. He had to have known what he was doing, and then to not even give her a decent executioner!! He could have had mercy on her an at least got a French swordsman like he did for Anne Boleyn so that she could have been dispatched quickly and with as little pain as possible!! I don't think we shall ever be able to truly wrap our minds around Henry's thinking, because as much as he did love the idea of chivalry, this was the least chivalric he could possibly be to kill a poor old lady who wasn't even a tiny threat to him. Son or not she probably just wanted to finish out her years and serve God and die happy at home in her bed with whatever family she may have had left around her! So sad she didn't get that! Also I loved hearing her graffiti poem! So beautiful and expressed her feelings 100%. May you rest in heaven Lady Margaret Pole!!

They told this sad tale at the Tower of London and said that Margaret was the oldest person ever beheaded...don't know whether that is true but it brought home the awfulness of this crime. The guide also said that Margaret's son was sent word in Rome that his mother would be freed if he would return and sacrifice himself, but that he refused. In 'The Spanish Princess' (I know, not exactly wholly accurate!) Margaret is even less of a threat because she is no longer close to her son. Widowed and impoverished after Catherine's household was dissolved, Margaret in this iteration had to leave Reginald with the Church. He was bitterly resentful as a child for this perceived abandonment, joined the church, and was not close to his mother.

If I can believe Ancestry she happens to be my 16th great grandmother which possibly explains the toughness of the women in my family.

So sorry to learn she met her end in this way. I read about her in Phillippa Gregory's novel "The White Princess". I came away with the impression she was a survivor. It seems Henry VIII's reputation as a sociopath is true.

I first heard about Margaret Pole whilst on a tour of the Tower of London. A woman of conviction and innocent. I don't see how Henry could have punished her. There seemed to be no respect for her from him.

I wonder what her son must have felt, having started all of this in the first place. Him safely away and leaving his poor elderly mother to meet such an end which ever version is true. A fascinating woman at the hands of Tutor men. How thankful I am I was not born in those times.

It would be interesting to know the suicide rate among the Tudor executioners, and how much they drank in order to perform their "duty".
    Such a sad story.

The act of condemning Margaret Pole to death because her son would not return to be prosecuted, is very typical of a narcissist. If a person says "no" to a narcissist, that is it. It does not matter how loyal that individual has been in the past, how much they have helped the narcissist, etc. All of that is out the window, and holds no importance for the narcissist. Think of Stalin killing his friends, those who helped him obtain power and keep it. The only difference is in the scope of his purges. Members of the Catholic Church opposed Henry, so they either had to conform, or die. His best friend, Thomas Moore, same thing. Wolsey, even Cromwell in the end. No-one was left unscathed by Henry. Imagine the trauma of those who lived through all of this. They may have longed to be allowed to leave court and lead a simple life. Those who found themselves too close to Henry's candlelight, were burned without regard for them, or their families. I understand this very well, intellectually. If I didn't know better, I'd be with the "How could you do that?" team. The one thing Margaret did was not to die in a way that Henry would have preferred. Everyone was horrified, and perhaps it was in revenge for her death, that people made sure that Cromwell's executioner was drunk at the time of his death.

I understand that margaret pole and her son, montague, were imprisoned and executed in Tower. Question: was Montegue's son also arrested with them? Was he just a child as depicted in The Tudors? What was his fate?

Wasn't she Henry VIII'S mother Elizabeth's first cousin? He really didn't care about anyone, did he? I mean, the fact that he had no compunction about killing an elderly close relative. He never fails to disappoint.
