    "A former neurosurgeon, Strange serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Debuting in the Silver Age of comics, the character has been featured in several comic book series and adapted in a variety of media including video games, an animated television show, and films. Inspired by storytellings of black magic and Chandu the Magician, Strange was created to bring a different kind of character and themes of mysticism to Marvel Comics." - Wikipedia

    Doctor Strange is not a "lovable asshole" like Tony Stark is. Tony Stark goes from being an arrogant, irresponsible person who manufactures weapons for a living to being an arrogant, irresponsible person who wears weapons as a hobby. Strange is completely undone as a person, and becomes someone who is completely selfless - thus the "I've come to bargain" scene. He is undone as an arrogant neurosurgeon and recreates himself as a student of magic and then a selfless servant dedicated to protecting mankind. This film does a wonderful job of establishing that. I would recommend watching it again for those who didn't notice it.

      I don't think she's a dipshit. I think she has a preconceived notion of Strange that stopped her from entirely perceiving the character in the film. The scene in which he rages over having broken the Hippocratic oath, the scene in which he is told "it's not about you" and the scene in which he bargains with Dormammu instead of trying to defeat him establish him as someone who has become a selfless hero rather than a fatally flawed facial-hair bro like Tony Stark. Tony Stark's conflict is that, no matter how hard he tries to be responsible, even in that attempt, he is irresponsible. Strange is someone who was forced to reinvent himself and abandon everything he used to be for the good of mankind. The film does a pretty great job of establishing this.

      Dr. strange isn't an asshole like tony stark. I don't know why she used that comparison. Dr. strange strength is self sacrifice. He is the only one who can defend the mystical realms. So he takes on all these things into himself. And he keeps coming back for more. Also dr strange is a very humble hero. He stayed out of civil war because he could end it with one word. But he didn't want to choose sides. Again he is nothing like tony who always has an agenda.

      I love your comments and totally agree that Strange and Tony's similarities are limited and extremely shallow. The fact so many are just saying the character and/or the movie are just a Tony Stark/IM retread is extremely frustrating. For all the movie talks about "opening your third eye", some people are determined to keep the two they actually do have closed. Just the way the two characters end up is world's apart, for starters. Strange has lost everything and is hiding away in the Sanctum after being completely reinvented and opening his mind to seemingly impossibilities, while at the end of IM Tony is still doing the exact same thing, just manufacturing a weapon for his body instead of a weapon to blow people up indiscriminately.
      And most importantly, Strange has actually learned things and *changed*. Tony is still making the same mistakes 8 years and 6 films later, so the comparisons between the two of them are baffling to me. Tony is still doing things for his own glory, his own guilt, and his own fear. He revels in the attention he gets and continues to fuck up because he feels bad for the past evils he's caused, and then the evils he's created to try to make up for those. It's made clear in Civil War that Tony's only concern is his own feelings, when he first sides with the Accords because a stranger made him feel like shit, and he then claimed it was about "accountability", but the second the Accords didn't fit his own personal agenda, he disregarded them and went off and did what he wanted. Strange learnt and accepted that it's not all about him, but with Tony it always has been, and it still is. Strange was willing to give his life up and sacrifice himself with no glory or even recognition (Kaecilious told Mordo and Wong that Strange had abandoned them) for the greater good, but Tony is still motivated by his own self-interest, and and seems like he only does good because it happens to coincide with his own desires to start with.

      I agree that CBG19's preconceived notions/expectations got in the way of her fully embracing the movie/character...she also acknowledges that more than once. Personally, I think it was exceptionally well done and gives me hope that Disney will get their act together going forward with Star Wars.

    I think CBG19 misunderstands the character as presented in the movie. Strange looked down on the magical and mystical, because he went to the far east expecting a real cure, not superstitious nonsense. Up to that point he had not witnessed anything supernatural. Although, he does share a universe with beings such as Thor and the Hulk. But that aside, within the context of the movie itself, it is totally understandable that he would be disappointed to hear just more mumbo jumbo.
    Also, what the world needs is LESS magical thinking. For a moment there I thought CBG19 simply misspoke, and meant that we need a bit more imagination in Hollywood.... and I can get behind that. But no, she didn't misspoke at all, she meant it. UGH. Magical thinking is a blight upon this world. It leads humans down dangerous roads, makes them gullible, and believe in things that are not real, with dangerous consequences.

    • @Imaculata

      Indeed. I'm glad the movie wasn't preachy. I'm glad they just presented magic as a fun fantasy... not as a real life philosophy. I give the film makers credit for being enough in touch with reality, to do that, and not present some kind of dangerous message that magic is real.

    • @lodgin
      @lodgin 7 лет назад +3

      The movie wasn't preachy, but damn, they really could have written better dialogue. I was full on expecting her to mention something about vibrations during that whole trip scene.
      (Also, it was kind of convenient that the creature of darkness he sees during the trip _just so happens_ to be the main villain, right?)

      I agree with you on the first paragraph, not so much on the second.
      As someone who has wandered away from faith for a while, done soul searching, and then coming back to faith, I think that exploring the concept of the supernatural, spiritual, or mystical is just as relevant to people as exploring secular/'realist' themes. I think the outright denial of belief and the mystical is wrong, especially since spirituality has been so woefully misrepresented and smeared in this current day and age. (I personally subscribe to the spiritual doctrine and analysis as a Christian, and particularly to John Lennox). I could also say that atheism/secularism can lead people to a complete and total disrespect and violent hatred to those of faith like Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, and Joseph Stalin who all were atheist, and sponsored state atheism/secularism as the worst contributor to genocide in the history of humanity; however, that would wrong to analyze that point of view for EVERYONE who subscribed to that because these men were evil, but not because of a particular ideology/faith. I think it's important to analyze different perspectives and not talk down to others who subscribe to different beliefs, even if we disagree with them.
      For instance, the Daredevil TV show is about Matthew analyzing his Catholic beliefs of forgiveness and divine justice against his profession as a lawyer and vigilante that answers to a system of law not directly tied to spiritual beliefs. His ties to his morality as a religious man is fascinating to analyze, especially once you throw in the idea that Matt himself may secretly love being a violent man.
      Not to mention that CBG19 ACKNOWLEDGES her bias towards what she wanted to see.

    From the perspective of an atheist, I found Dr. Strange very likable in the movie. He rightly questioned every step of his awakening until he had the experiences under his belt. The biggest transformation was when he stopped thinking only about himself toward the end of the movie. I thought his progression was well done.

    • @Flaris

      Yeah, I liked it. And you could say there were several reasons he advanced as quickly as he seemed to. Being brilliant didn't hurt. He could actually read and understand texts that would take others a long time to figure out. And he also didn't simply follow the rules. At the start when he needed to simply wrap his head around this he did. But his biggest leaps came from questioning the status quo.
      And then he made that huge leap at the end when he had a goal outside himself. His imagination saved the day at the end because he realized there was a way to solve this problem. One that involved great personal pain, but one he could do.

    • @debstherottie472
      @debstherottie472 7 лет назад +6

      'without questioning' anything? roflol. wow, you really need to fed your ego, huh?
      religion is nothing more than a group of people who share a faith... the state of their faith varies and it is not a cult, which means they each have independent thoughts.
      it's funny, Christian religion is based on Free Will which means you do have to question each and every aspect of it... man is not a puppet of God or any manner of being.
      Atheists have become like vegans, they tell you the first minute you met them all about their special needs, lol.

      Disagree. There's far too much science-worshipping in the world right now. Science is a tool. It's a mental process. It's not a religion. There are so many people who limit their thinking because they are hung up on a society who is telling them that something can't exist unless it can be scientifically explained. The problem is, though, that things like soap were in existence for thousands of years before science should EXPLAIN why soap was effective.
      Science should ride alongside other exploratory endeavors of human-kind. It shouldn't be the limiter of them.

      You have no idea what she's talking about. It's not magical thinking so much as mystical thinking, which is the attempt to expand the mind by tapping into the wisdom of the subconscious. You're confusing that with people who think there's a magical man in the sky who listens when we beg for things. The fact that you have no idea that there's a difference between these two things is exactly what she's talking about.

    • @internisus
      @internisus 7 лет назад +20

      I understand mysticism. I was a religious studies minor. My thesis was an explication of meditation and other mystical experiences and thought as a direct response and solution to very specific existential problems with a real foundation in neuroscience.
      I also understand that CBG19 was lamenting a modernism that lacks imagination and creativity (I guess referring mostly to the gulf between Eastern and Western philosophies and culture). But she *said* magical thinking, and there's a very fine line between mysticism and the kind of superstition, irrational nonsense, placebo fantasies, and conspiracy theories that plague the U.S. I sometimes find CBG19 to be a little too open-minded, so, when she says something like this, I'm not entirely sure she knows the difference.

    Re: Strange's initial reluctance to accept mysticism.
    He went to Kamar-Taj with some pretty specific preconceived notions. He was desperate, but he was desperate for a cure he could believe in, essentially having convinced himself that Kamar-Taj was a front for human experimental treatment in a place where they could do that sort of thing without too much interference. It's why he is keen to find out what their method is and tosses out possibilities like nerve regeneration. He doesn't have faith; he is grounded in knowledge and reason--which is why his photographic memory is a nice touch. You've got a guy who is unwilling to believe something he hasn't seen because he can remember everything and soaks up knowledge like a sponge, but his encyclopedic knowledge doesn't show the slightest hint of evidence that magic is real.
    Then the Ancient One rocks his being, and once he's convinced he hasn't been drugged, he immediately accepts the truth of his new experience and begs to be taught. I don't think he wanted to learn magic just to go back to being a muggle so much as he went there in the first place to get healed by fringe science, learned that magic was real, and then tore through his magical learning with obvious enjoyment. Pangborn went back to living a normal life because he said he hit a wall that he couldn't get past, so his choice was be a (crippled?) mediocre sorcerer or be an able-bodied muggle? I don't know, that part was confusing--it sounded like the Ancient One told Strange he'd have to choose, like Pangborn, between using magic to heal himself or foregoing that to just use magic. Strange gets sucked into the conflict before he has to make that choice, and once he learns his lesson (that it's about more than just him) he effectively makes the choice to be a Sorcerer.

    I think the issue you have with the movie is that the comics have YEARS of character building with Doctor Strange and he is a highly powerful and proficient superhero... this isnt that movie. This is a clear cut origin story and yes it has a few stumbles but I think Marvel did a fantastic job of introducing a completely new concept to their viewers. You have to remember Marvel isnt just making movies for die hard comic fans they are making movies for MOVIE fans who probably have little to no idea WHO Doctor Strange is. Just hold out a bit, we will get that fantastic and freaky Doctor Strange we all know and love from years of comic book development.

      I'm not sure where she keeps coming up with Dr. Strange being a super-deep or charismatic character. I've read Marvel comics for 30 years and I feel like Strange is MOSTLY just a means-of-exposition for OTHER characters stories. Bendis dropped that one joke in X-men about him being in bed with a woman, and the only reason the joke worked is because nobody expects Strange to have a personal life. That's how dry his character is.

    I agree with most criticisms that he didn't really "earn" his powers. A way to fix this would have been to set the start of the movie BEFORE the events of avengers or even Iron Man and use the events of other marvel movies to show time passing as he goes through years of training we catch up to Civil War and the audience feels like he's been training for nearly a decade. I think that would have been a great bit of meta commentary and character development. Plus, it's something that only a marvel film could do.

      I'm in agreement. At a minimum they could have gone back to the Dr. Strange doing one thing: Having the Astral image studying throughout the montage as an anchor to establish timeline. For instance, the splash cuts to Strange & Astral Image could be Strange at his laptop reading an internet article on [pick a timeline - Iron Man 1,2,3 Cap 1,2,3 Avengers 1,2] and just advance through using different visual cues on how long he's been studying. Bonus: They could show the growth in experience as the Astral version learns more and more complex and difficult spells. Mix in a little of how/what a spell is used for, modifying the spell hand gestures/colors of spells/what's summoned etc. and it could give the perception of growth through experience and time.

      That would imply they had all this planned in advance, which I find unlikely. I think his issue, or at least my issue with this video, is that she complains about the tiny stuff that really wasn't an issue. Most of the review was negative for a movie she claims was good. Making mountains out of mole hills for about 14 mins. And then she quits reviewing the movie, which is the point of this entire video, to promote a set of comic books about doctor strange instead.

    Can you please talk about Taika Waititi directing Thor Ragnarok. He is such a great up and coming director and he is gonna send the MCU in a totally new direction. Plus, if you haven't seen Hunt For the Wilderpeople, you're wrong.

      Captain Phasma I also heard that he directed the mid credit scene in Doctor Strange which was great. So we know he's gonna do great. Plus, I love how he's making a point to hire a lot of Australian natives. He's the kind of director Hollywood and the world needs. (That was dramatic) I just hope the big league doesn't change him.

    The problem with magical thinking and interest in magic, for me, aside that it isn't real, is that it's obviously and blatantly motivated by our fear of death. Every evidence points to the fact that Death is the end, and we are material beings with an expiration date. But if there such a thing as magic, if there are mysteries, Death need not be the end of us. So that's what it is. Our fear of annihilation compels us to invent these magical stories and myths...not a very praiseworthy motive. Nothing about wanting more creativity and imagination in society. It's just selfish wishful thinking.

      She wants him to already be the Sorcerer Supreme, but this is his origin film and she just doesn't seem to get that. He hasn't earned his sorcerous swagger yet, but he's made some good struts towards it in this film!

  • @d.c8575
    @d.c8575 7 лет назад +6

    The idea of the movie is that "we are never really" ready", and that Strange is the sorcerer supreme because he is a genius who can solve problems without brute force; in the comics he always defeats Dormammu with cleverness rather than fighting or shooting more fire balls; and that is the essence of all magic: the subtle defeats the hard, mind over matter.

    • @d.c8575
      @d.c8575 7 лет назад +2

      The movie impels people to accept ignorance because knowledge is
      infinite like the universe; also in magic there is not a set limit or
      "graduation" to tell you when you are ready to do a task conveniently;
      which makes it more severe. We are used to the post-modern industrialized way of thinking: "i need to be this good to do this task conveniently like a good robot".

    I did have a bit of a problem with the training montage as well, but I don't believe his training was finished. He's an exceptional learner, but he still has a lot of material to research. I'm guessing they're going to portray him as always trying to learn, but keeps getting interrupted by whatever superhero crisis comes up at the time.

    • @Avarn388
      @Avarn388 7 лет назад +2

      I think his training overall needed to be expanded upon. For instance I liked,(SPOILER alert), the scene with him in the mountains and needing to conjure a portal as that was Strange surrendering himself to the mystic arts and as a test especially with master Hamir's lack of hands.
      We needed to see more scenes like that. Showcase Strange, excelling at some parts, but failing at others and him getting frustrated. That way, when the climax hit, it would have been so much stronger.

    • @aceTL87
      @aceTL87 7 лет назад +2

      Yes he does still need more training. At no point in the movie was he crowned Sorcerer Supreme. I think in Thor: Ragnarok he will achieve that status.

    I don't understand what your "political agenda" is; do you believe in supernatural nonsense? Cryptozoology? Wican magic rituals? Faith healing and other ridiculous alternative treatments like magnet therapy? What were you expecting the film to say _exactly_? Also, what exactly do you mean by "magical thinking?"
    Frankly, it's probably wise for the film to _not_ affirm any of these things in the real world; if that's even what you're getting at.

    I really disliked it despite how much I wanted to like it. Like Inception it's very much a visual spectacle but besides that I didn't feel it had much depth, many scenes just felt like a series of special effects and nothing more. The character of Dr Strange was the most unlikable protagonist I think I've ever seen, totally self involved and a twat the whole way through, just because he changes at the end doesn't change the fact that he's a total idiot for 90% of the film. The only positive points for me were that Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton were incredible.

    This is the first time where I completely disagree with Comicbook Girl. It's like she saw a completely different movie. I thought they showed his hard study and how much he tried to learn. They even showed that they had to force him to make that first jump into practicing magic by pitting him on a mountain. I thought the chemistry between him and the nurse was the best we had since Pepper Potts. Also, Stange was never a lovable asshole. He is not Stark who keeps that character flaw, this movie is about learning selflessness.

    I keep hearing these reviewers say rubbish about Stephen Strange not earning his powers as if he became incredibly powerful or something. He was literally shown to be the most unskilled sorcerer. In fact if not for the eye of Agomotto, the cape of levitation, the Ancient one, and Mordo the guy would have died a long time ago. And he almost did. Stephen Strange was a man that got lucky...that was his character...but he didn't let that pull him down or make him naive to the real stakes that lead to his ultimate sacrifices against dormamuu. Do I really have to do you jobs for you guys or what??

  • @CW257866

    I feel like Strange's fear of failure was also reinforced in the moments where he straight up refused patients that would ruin his perfect record.
    Also, I felt like Strange earned his powers up to a certain point. Like, I completely buy that he was quickly picking up a ton of stuff and that his knowledge was still incomplete. I also liked that he still wasn't proficient in the practical use of magic in a wizard fight, since basically all of his study was research.
    What bothered me is that Strange got far more proficient and confident in his powers by the end of the movie when basically no timed passed since. I mean, they could have even pulled a Bill & Ted/DBZ and have him use the Eye to create a pocket of time to master his magical abilities.
    The other thing that kinda bothered me about the movie was how well Strange bounced back from being stabbed in the chest.

      CW AtWork
      On your point about his failures,
      While I agree, I think what she's getting at, is not what his fear of failure looks like, it's that we don't get to see what actual failure looks like with him, or how he deals with it. He can't do surgery anymore, but he never really showed failure in that regard.
      To an extent, he shows his frustration with his lack of magical ability while learning, but as soon as his hand is forced and he MUST create that portal or die, he does, thus succeeding through study and survival instinct, not learning from a failure. While he shows determination and tenacity, he is only highlighting his fear of failing, and never really experiencing the actual failure. This of course, is just my opinion and up for debate

    in that world magic is real and behaves in certain patterns and follows rules, that is why it can be studied, therefore magic is just a subcategory of science and that is how he treats it in the movie, obviously since he is a man of reason, he only believes it after it has been proven to him multiple times, not just because somebody said so.
    He also did not go on a spiritual journey to nepal, he thought somebody made a medical breakthrough, that is why he was disappointed when he found out it was "spirit healing" something that in his world got proven wrong every time.
    gave your video a like, even though all the woo woo peddling gives me the cringe :)
    movie was pretty good though.

    • @smillman437
      @smillman437 7 лет назад

      Actually, the ancient one telling him about death giving life meaning, knowing our time is short, changed him. A lot. They're going to develop him a lot more once he has to face off against Mordo (sp?). Infinity War, Thor/Loki being from their realm, and the fact that literal god characters will be introduced down the road is definitely pointing at the greater probability that the magic in this movie, is going to exist in parallel to Marvel's fictional scientific issues (Iron man, Hulk, mutants, Spiderman). But, the scientific thread of Marvel will never explain the magic.

    • @RoySchl
      @RoySchl 7 лет назад +3

      smillman437 sure he might change by those experiences, but that was his mindset going into it all and that is how he approached learning and training.
      And sure i know in the movies they will keep science and magic seperate, just because it makes for cooler stories if those are opposite concepts, but in reality it would just be one thing, since science is just a method of figuring stuff out, not a pile of stuff and toys to play with that is distinct from another pile of stuff.
      But hey i bet even in the movies Stark would try to combine that stuff (and for consistency fail of course)

      Magic is easy to believe in when it is demonstrated to be real. I don't think it was a question of belief for Dr Strange to begin using magic, it was more about accepting it's existence. i.e the difference between knowing something and believing in something. It's not like God, where there is no proof and so intense faith has to be employed.

  • @EpickEmpire
    @EpickEmpire 7 лет назад +3

    I think my main issue with the movie that none of the Marvel 616 magic was there. No rhyming couplets or invoking of any of the mystical beings. The Wand of Watoomb only got mentioned once and it wasn't even when we saw it on screen!! (It's what Wong grabbed to fight Kycillius with.) I saw the Vaulting Boots of Valtor, The All-Seeing Eye of Agamotto, and the Cloak of Levitation. But no one, including the Ancient One, called on any of the Vishanti, Cytorrak, Raggador, Ikkon or ANYONE. They did invoke Dormammu. So I guess we have to ease in to Dr. Strange's more iconic spells. He IS just stating off, after all.

    Yeah, magic is great... *in fiction.*
    There's nothing wrong with enjoying a story about magic and spirituality and expanding one's mind beyond the physical realm. *I* certainly enjoy it. But I also understand that it isn't actually real. Dr. Strange is a fictional character. The magic spells he casts are made up. There's nothing comparable to it in real life. You can't actually transport your mind to another realm by thinking about it really hard. Reality doesn't work that way.
    And people aren't skeptical of supernatural claims because they're close-minded, or have no imagination, or dogmatically refuse to believe in anything other than material existence. People don't believe in magic because magic fails to preform. Magic has no practical application. It isn't capable of lifting anything, or healing anyone, or accurately predicting the future in any reliable sense. If magic COULD do those things, those magic techniques would be exploited and used in everyday applications. Everyone would KNOW magic exists. But anytime supernatural claims HAVE been tested and those tests ALWAYS come back inconclusive.

If when he's seeing the multiverse they had had it to where there was the multiverse, right, and then the dark dimension was separate from it so when he goes into it have him cross over between universes but have it be that white void realm and have him fly past the head of The Living Tribunal.     Bad things about this movie;
    - Too much martial arts.
    - The martial arts sucked.
    - ALL magic spells were for conjuring martial arts weapons, dimensional portals, or totally pointless symbols.
    - CGI boss demon was completely uninteresting and stupid looking.
    - Tilde Swinton, while being a great actor, didn't portray "being powerful" very well, probably due to the aforementioned shitty martial art routines and lack of any interesting spells. She was fucking badass in Narnia so what gives?
    - Dr. Strange seemed like a mostly incompetent mage even after his training.
    - The philosophy in the film seemed to go balls deep into the Golden Mean Fallacy. These days' armchair philosophers seem to love it for some reason.
    - Magic/Mysticism isn't a real or interesting subject. The pseudo-scientific rationalization was gag worthy.
    - Movie paints mortality as awesome and immortality as an evil thing. (What a load of rubbish.)
    Great things about this movie;
    - Cumberbatch was a standout as expected. He *was* Dr. Strange.
    - The visuals/special effects were mostly spectacular, other than Dormammu and his dumb fruity bacteria dimension. Spirit bodies fighting in the hospital was particularly clever.
    - Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) and her relationship with Dr. Strange was compelling, and frustrating, since they were pushed apart throughout the entire film.
    All in all, there were some great standouts that went to waste in a movie about dumb magic, dumb philosophy, and dumb villains.

    They went more scientific with their explanation of magic, which was in keeping with the style that they set up with the Thor movies. They said that there were other dimensions and parallel universes and they were just tapping into those other universes with differently sets of physical laws to create effects in this universe. They even described spells as being like software code that achieves a desired effect. So, it seemed like magic was a mix of Vancian, Lovecraftian, with a heavy dose of modern scientific cosmology. It was a smart way of introducing the audience to magic and making it something the audience would find believable. I think if they went the New Agey route, audiences would have thought it was silly and unbelievable.

    Shes right on the time problem, that he didn't seem to really earn it, but I'd argue that that was reflected pretty well in the fights. He got the time thing down, and portals, but one of those was really basic and the other was using an infinity stone. He couldn't fight properly and really only survived through luck and the help of the cape.

    I think you missed the part about his "failure". He never failed as a doctor before his accident because he avoided any patient that could be a failure for him. You see it first when he is in his car and reviewing patients and turns down certain patients because they would hurt his perfect record. You again see it when he talks to Benjamin Bratt and Bratt tells him how he came to see him and couldn't get past his secretary. He didn't fail before because he never put himself in a spot where he could fail. The ancient one points that out to him as she dies.

  • @theanonymous118
    @theanonymous118 7 лет назад +2

    I think you ve kinda missed some points here and there, for example when you were talking about his spiritual awakening why don t you accept it or whatever, well you forgot the part about sudden responsability:
    - For starters he came only to heal, and he s a very good, if the greatest, surgeon so it s kinda hard for him to believe that there are other ways to heal someone, especially very very bad wounds and the like. When he was studying the mystic and was starting to get pretty good at it he was EXPECTED to take part in all of it and defend the Earth from the mystic, when again he only came so he could be a surgeon again and save lives like that, so it s pretty understandable how he reacted in the movie
    We also saw him have problems with magic at the start, he had a hard time making cool fire glyphs and portals, and in the end we see his hand still shake so i d say he s technically still not done studying, we don t see him become the Sorcerer Supreme either, for something like that not happen means either it happened off-screen (which would be a HUUUUUUUUGE mistake) or it s bound to happen in a solo movie or an Avengers movie

      Eduardo Patiño; I think the cyclic model is a better fit. I would propose an unfolding of space in multiple dimensions and a recomposing of those back to a point only to unfold everytime. Who knows then how old our universe actually is if it's something that works in that manner. Might explain other things we have in our world, but thats just speculative theory. Afterall, we don't live long enough to view the universe working in this manner ;)

    In defense of the decisions made by the movie I think Dr. Strange's character was made with a subtle yet constant and visible hubris. When he goes to seek eastern medicine his ego has already shaped what "he thinks he knows." This is IRL a problem for people with big egos. While within their own spheres of knowledge they are quite capable, but tethering outside what they know creates conflict. This is why he resents the ancient one's eastern approach. This is also the reoccurring element for why, after so long in the movie, Dr. Strange is still focused on fixing his hands. He's a somewhat learned sorcerer and most of us would take that with crippled hands any day, but his ego made it about him and the ancient one reminds him of this explicitly. I feel like they hit Dr. Strange right on the nose in terms of: This is what a ego driven person in real life would be like. So I applaud the realism. You don't think he's likable but that's kind of the proof that they did a good job with his character. Ego driven people are not likable ... typically.

    • @morrigan7454
      @morrigan7454 7 лет назад +1

      It seems that you require proper education, my child...
      Gene therapy was born from the study and work of Kazuo Murakami, a genetist in Japan working at the Tsukuba university.
      He discovered how the genetic code of each individual can be transcended and manipulated in real time by shifting the way we think.
      If you care to eliminate such idiotic ignorance and arrogance out of your self, you should read The divine code of life... Then, compare to ANY spiritual system you can find and it will be the same premise ANYWHERE...
      Allowing only positive thoughts and feelings your health, perception and critical thinking improve greatly and not only that, but it actually affects the very core structure of your genetic code...
      This is no pseudo science or voodoo. It's SCIENCE done by one of the most recognized scientists in Asia.
      "gene therapy was born out of science" Hahahaha, yeah, "magically" he came up with the idea that it was possible to do that because, he couldn't find any inspiration at all in any of the thousands upon thousands of spiritual beliefs that already teach the very same thing with a different language.
      Don't worry, you're not dying, that sting you're feeling up your ass is your ego dying of shame and your mind expanding into the REAL world of how science is affected and inspired by magic and spiritual knowledge more than you could imagine...
      Hypnotism was no magic trick, ever. It is science now and it was used IN THE SAME fucking way for centuries, no matter who applied it the principle, with the same results and the same effects, it was the same and it's the same base principle for the alpha state of mind, deep meditation, astral projection and even shamanic trance... The same shit, different language.
      ""Hypnosis is a state of human consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness and an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion.""
      It's not a scientifically developed procedure and it's not a trick. It's been a part of spiritual practices in many civilizations for hundreds and hundreds of years.
      There, now go and clean all the shit you got around your mouth for eating so much excrement.
      I come from a family of scientists, doctors, psychologists and spiritual healers, you pick the wrong person to try to impress with such a small mind.
      Let me know if you want another round of fist thrusting up your ass, I have plenty more to teach you.

    Strange remained a novice throughout this film, the fact that it ends without him being named or becoming The Sorcerer Supreme and him and Ming deciding to take off the Eye of Agamotto until his skills and powers grow shows that he isn't as powerful as it seems.
    And we have to remember, when he first went to Kathmandu, he was still thinking the solution to his hands was medical not spiritual, just remember what he was saying to the Ancient One when he first met her about what medical techniques she learned to fix... Ben Bratt...
    This is Dr. Strange Begins... he can't be the comic book version in a film about his origin...

    I enjoyed the movie. I loved all the stuff about the astral plane and different dimensions.
    I felt like the magic was weak though and was too martial arts based. The Ancient One was killed way too easily. There should have been some energy blasts, matter manipulation, teleporting, super speed or something more grand than the buildings folding in on themselves and the pretty geometric shapes.
    I agree with her how they said in the movie it takes "years of practice" but it didn't seem like years passed at all during his training. I hop the next movie will have better magic.

    Tilda Swinton just absolutely stole the show for me.
    When The Ancient One just wanted to stop time and watch the storm before her time was up , I cried. Bigtime. Man, that scene really worked for me. Just beautiful. That scene also finally made Strange more relatable and endearing. I can relate to being motivated by a fear of failure, its a failing of mine.
    I love your take on wanting - and seeing - the more hidden truths shall we say - in this movie. The several books I have read on Buddhism and new age thinking have made a mark on me. I cannot prove that people are so much more powerful than they seem, but I can say I have had a few unexplainable experiences myself, and when I read some of those things, I just can't fight that feeling of truth when I read it.

    I did love the ending of Strange so much. I felt it was the strongest ending Marvel has had for a character movie so far. We expected a huge battle and when they arrive the battle is all over so he comes up with a completely different take on gaining victory.
    To be honest this ending of a Marvel movie came at just the right time as I was beginning to get bored by every movie having the fight at the end of each act with the last one being a total blow out. It has been so repetitious and this gave us something new.
