    Inertia only exists when there is acceleration. So the Flat Earthers would have explain what speed the Earth is travelling now, when it started accelerating (6000 BCE ?) and why it must be able to go faster than the speed of light? They deny the Earth is a globe, gravity, the speed of light and also the Sun is the centre of the solar system.

      But rotation does play a small factor in weight.

    • @theonismithcreations8554
      @theonismithcreations8554 6 лет назад

      @Long duk dong Weight is the force caused by Gravity. Rotation doesn't have an affect on Mass directly but does have an affect on Weight, which is the measurement of the force Mass generates (Gravity). So pointing out rotation's affect on weight is both relevant & correct.
      I never asserted rotation had a direct affect on mass, nor did I assert gravity and mass were the same thing.
      So if there is a "moron" here it is probably the person with zero comprehension skills.

    • @theonismithcreations8554
      @theonismithcreations8554 6 лет назад

      @Long duk dong Your lack of comprehension is showing again because I also never said rotation has an affect on Gravity. I only said rotation affects weight and it does. Since we are on the subject, Altitude also affects weight, because the further you are from the center of the earth is the more centrifugal force you would be experiencing from the Earth's rotation.
      Gravity is constantly pulling you down (towards center mass specifically) while Earth's rotation is constantly trying to fling you off it's surface. Luckily for us Gravity is far stronger than the Earth's centrifugal force but the effects are measurable.
      On the Equator, Earth's rotation reduces weight by 0.3%, this force decreases the closer you move towards the N & S pole. At the equatorial bulge (the Earth is not a perfect sphere) weight is reduced an additional 0.2%. At the North & South poll you would weigh the heaviest due to lack of rotation and centrifugal forces at those points.
      I'm sure there are plenty of great books on this subject you would obviously find very enlightening. Perhaps read a few to prevent yourself from trying to incorrectly call someone out in a public space on something you obviously don't understand.

    • @theonismithcreations8554
      @theonismithcreations8554 6 лет назад

      @Long duk dong No I was just trying to simplify things because even the simplest comment was going over your head.
      Even though "Centerfugal" is considered a fictious force it is still the "apparent force" used in common conversations.
      It is sad though now you are resorting to arguing semantics because all your original arguments have fallen to pieces.
      So if you acknowledge Centripetal force is a thing and obviously Inertial force is a thing, why don't they both affect everything on a rotating Earth?

    I served 12 years in the Navy. Out at sea at night it's pitch black. As you get closer to land you begin to see the lights of the city lighting up the sky. Eventually you get closer, the mountains, then building tops, actual lights etc.
    Why do lighthouses have the light at the top? Why was the Crows nest at the top of a ship? Why do waring ships stay over the Horizon for cover?
    I have personally seen satellites, witnessed rocket launches and in the military was a NBC warfare expert. ONE of the very first things our military would do if we found ourselves in a huge conflict is launch a Nuclear weapon into space to knockout the enemies communication satellites. Why would we have that as an INITIAL battle plan if satellites did not exist?
    They claim the U.N. in 1961 decided to bar people from the arctic and antarctic because THAT is where the edge of the earth is. What about Captain Cook, Magellan, Columbus, Etc? They made maps of the planet and weren't involved with the U.N. because it wasn't formed until 1945
    I proposed that we have 1,000 FE'S and 1,000 intelligent people pool $100 each and charter a boat and we can choose 8 people from each side and we go 300 Miles out to sea. In the night, when it's pitch black, we head to the coastline. Whoever wins the debate about the curve gets to split the remaining loot amongst themselves AND, I will not take a single cent.

    - If "momentum" is doing the work of gravity to keep us securely on this surface then the opposite face must be continually losing mass(matter) by the same argument and thinning out. Under that principle, flat earth should behave like a kind of comet-pizza trailing rock and ice from the underside surface like a giant tail.

    You need to be 35k feet up with a wide viewing angle and a perfectly clear day if you want to see the curvature of the earth from an airplane. Generally speaking, these are not the conditions you experience in a commercial flight, and when it looks like you're seeing obvious curvature it's typically an artifact of the window or camera. Earth is obviously found, but this example should probably be avoided.

  • @bofbob1

  • @toofusnook
    @toofusnook 6 лет назад

    David, I lead Astronomy and Cosmology study groups at my local college. While it is true that the Earth is a globe, you have repeated a misconception that is widespread and provides an easy target for flat-earth conspiracy theorists. This is the misconception that Earth's curvature is visible from a commercial flight. I have actually gotten the people at Brilliant.org to remove the same misconception. A commercial flight is simply not high enough; what you WILL "see" is an imperceptible drop in the height of the entire horizon all around the plane. one would need a stable theodolite or similar instrument to perceive this change, as this is an angle change in the vicinity of a degree or so. Here is my simplest argument that substantiates my point: if, in fact, the curvature of the Earth were visible through the limited field of view provided by the window in an airplane, there would not be a horizon visible out of the window on the other side of the plane, as it would have to curve away ("downward") from the view out of your window. Until one is far enough away from the Earth's surface to begin to see its ball shape, the initial perception of curvature is the same as a receding (dropping) disc, and this is not an effective way in which to argue a case to flat-earth conspiracists.

  • @AnotherJoe

  • @MXF5700

    Unfortunately, we can't really see the curvature from your typical commercial plane flight. You would have to get up to AT LEAST 50K ft to even to start seeing the curvature and would really need to be at least double that for it to be clear there's a curve.

    Not a flat earther, but I just want to point out that your three easy examples as to why the earth is a sphere are weird. You'd have to go up pretty far to see a curve.

It is very odd because my dad's friend is not a picture book Christian and does not care about many basic moral beliefs. But he has a tendency to believe in conspiracy theories and pseudoscience and annoys the heck out of my father with that. I think he still colors the edge of CDs with green edding because he thinks they will sound better (and that was an April's fool joke on a music magazine). It mentions that earth is circular, aka flat disk, you can see entire earth from big mountain or tree, that it has corners, has pillars and so on. But at same time you will find Christians who will use bible to claim that it says that earth is globe... In general, bible says what you want it to say...

    1:10 is an illustration of an ordinary crescent moon, not an illustration of the Earth's curved shadow which can only be seen during lunar eclipses, and nowhere near as dramatically.
    I disagree that the non-hierarchical flow of knowledge is all that good. Certainly we don't want to empower any class to hide information; that we can now explore all ideas much more freely is potentially positive. But it's ONLY positive if we have the critical thinking skills on our own to evaluate new information as formerly the information "gatekeepers" did for us. Some of us do, but it's become painfully clear that most people don't. And so, along with a vigorous informed discourse, we get Flat Earthers, QAnon, antivax, birthers, truthers, pseudoscientists, pseudohistorians, pseudojournalists, and nonsense of all stripes absorbed uncritically by large masses of people. This has become so overwhelmingly prevalent that it swamps any potential good that might have come out of our present information regime. The Trump presidency is a surer sign of that than anything.

    I don't have faith in the scientific establishment, I have trust based on experience of it's success and the repeat-ability of scientific experiments. I don't have faith in my house lights, I have trust based on experience when I turn the switch the lights come on, short of burned out bulbs or power failures. This trust is also built on my understanding of how my lights work. My trust is also magnified by the fact that I am literally surrounded (clothed, housed, fed, warmed, cooled, moved, communicate) by successful technology based on successful science and my life and well being is constantly not just made better by the technology that is based on science, but my life is dependent on technology built on science.
    This technology didn't get created by magic, it's based on science. Fields of science are interconnected and interdependent. Generally if one is wrong then the others would almost certainly be wrong. But that is not what we see. Scientific fields tends to reinforce the validity of other scientific fields through testing and evidence.
