  • In 2011, Overkill Software released Payday: The Heist, a four player co-op shooter about robbin' banks and pickles. Nowadays, Payday is better known for it's sequel and funny Twitter man, but does the original game still hold up?...

I hope that they accomplish fleshing out the heisters’ personalities better in PD3. With them focusing on the main gang+2 TBA around launch it should give them plenty of time to do so, and slowly adding new members when capable
Though I like most the characters at base level in PD2, it’d carry more of the game if I felt like the game had more “character” if that makes sense. More depth, more in-game voice lines and banter. Like Vermintide 1&2, and hopefully better than Darktide.

I agree with everything you said in this video, I love both games and if it wasn't for the low player count I'd definitely play The Heist more often
As fun as 2's goofiness may be, it completely lost the immersion factor down the line especially with the canonical collabs
It's really hard to take the story seriously when you're fighting alongside John Wick Ethan Klein and Jacket in the Reservoir Dogs heist, which they decided should be the heist where Bain's captured for some reason
It'd also be so nice to have special enemies feel like special enemies again
They're so common now, and now that we have perk decks and all that they're underwhelming too
Imagine if Bain still alerted you every time a special spawned, mute contractor voices would be an essential setting
And lastly, I miss when hostages had a purpose outside of trading for teammates, which was prolonging the time between assaults at the cost of having to fend off the occasional HRT
Oh yeah, and when cops were WAY harder to intimidate so civilian hostages were way more valuable

    • @elsienova4269

I recommend playing Payday 2 with the classic heisting mod. Its not perfect especially because it emulates the very first versions of the game rather than the most updated versions of "Old Payday 2" that had more weapons and heists, however it is a really good classic 2013 Payday experience that makes you feel like an actual heister.

  • @TubbyLumps
    @TubbyLumps Год назад +308

I started with PDTH and it felt like a very realistic heist simulator, like what an actual crew could do in real life, ignoring the slightly more over the top ones such as no mercy. Overall PDTH had a very gritty, badass feel, and you had to play properly instead of running around like a maniac or youd get gunned down. What made the game especially challenging and dear to me was the fact that you coudlnt restore health without medic bags, making them crucial for every heist, which is what i feel kind of became trivialised in pd2.
As the years went by for 2, the heists got notably weirder and weirder until everything became almost a meme and i feel like the game lost all its serious undertones. It's now more of a haha dozer/cloaker go boom or poison gas thrown by your heister everywhere. Even the concept of medieval weapons and flamethrowers are odd to me, like a normal heisting crew such as the one in pdth would just use guns? That makes more sense.
Lastly, i feel pdth art style seemed a lot less cartoony thant 2, and every interaction you make in there feels kinda impactful, i guess?

Got back into Payday 2 when it was around Hoxton showed up(College entrance exams fucked me over so i wasn't there for awhile).
Honestly i think the Grinder perk deck was the Turning Point before it became worse with powercreep and oddity.
Rogue was OP at it's peak and Snipers + Nades were the start of powercreep since you could deal with Shields + Dozers better with them, but Grinder + RPG + Piglet GL and the likes were what started that trend of wtf ness followed by the bows and the likes. Especially Grinder, since it trivialized Tabula Rasa. Formerly it felt like a Prestige moment to beat that achivement.
Then again i did leave in Crimefest 2015(...when 'That' happpened) like many did but seems to me that shit got progressively worse over the last 7 years.

I started playing PDTH after +1000 hours on PD2, and even though I've only played a few hours on normal difficulty, I can safely say that PDTH is what Death Sentence (and maybe Death Wish) should have been.
I didn't like Death Sentence because of the damage enemies could do (especially on open maps), so I used the Crackdown mod because I like the idea it offers (fewer enemies but "smarter"). There were things that I really liked (enemies using real tactics, improved accuracy and more controlled shots instead of emptying the magazine, enemy's falloff damage, the original One Down skins and the new Medic design, 3 cloakers instead of 1 and they could target another player, Tasers shaking the screen more uncontrollably, the Grenadier, some units trying to dodge your bullets and the new track) but others that I didn't (sniper's accuracy, Safe House Raid was easier and there weren't Minigun-dozers nor Russian enemies).
I know is hard to balance Payday 2 because of the dodge/tank builds and the new op weapons (and the programmation), but IMO the idea of Crackdown should be something like "It doesn't matter how broken your guns or builds are. If you don't pay attention or collab with your teammates you're done." If the Crackdown team could make DS as challenging as PDTH is in Overkill or Overkill +145, and the enemies as smarter as those from Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, the mod could be much better. And imagine for example that enemies with gas masks appear that prevent toxic explosives from trivializing the game, or all bulldozers (especially the minigun) being as dangerous as the bulldozer of PDTH.

The first was stripped down, raw, intense and crazy fun to just play for the sake of playing. The second felt as much about grinding on standard video game treadmills as playing it for fun. What you said about the difference in gameplay is pretty accurate. The first really felt weightier and more realistic in having to use cover to survive and that special enemies were a bigger problem to deal with. The guns felt so much better. The second feels lighter and more gamey and arcadey. Like most games with endless mods and unlocks most of them are pointless and the "customization" options add little real value to the core gameplay. Just more hoops to jump through to unlock crap most of which you aren't going to use.
Games like LFD(2) and PDTH are classics for me because their gameplay was so incredible I played them to death simply for the pure fun and immersion of playing them. No big cosmetic or progression systems. Something too many devs seem terrified of actually making: A game that relies upon being goddam fun to play and not on bells-and-whistles to keep players in it.

What also happend with now 10 years of DLCs is power creep. New and stronger skills and weapons made the gameplay way faster and way goofier.
The crossbow is literally stronger then the 50cal and you can just "doge" through 20 cops with assault rifles.
Same goes for the new characters. They all pretty much suck, but its easy to keep the game profitable with them.
Killing 200 zombies cops with dual wielding pistols is fun, but I prefered the tone of the first game a lot more.
Even when it let to some really weird camping spots.
Also payday 2 killed the stealth-action-hybrid the first game had totally off, which I will never understand.
Would have been super easy to have 2 skill trees, for both stealth and loud and just grab your big weapons later in the mission or something.

regarding the tonal whiplash of mission plots - Looking back it seems super crazy what kind of shenanigans they get into in the "silly" missions, but if you were playing it back when it was fresh, you were getting brand new content every couple of weeks. Each time they upped the ante in terms of what crazy or dangerous thing you were trying to pull off and it was awesome and exciting every time. The weird santa levels or tiny lab rats levels or even goat sim heists were kind of treated as non-canon because they were introduced as limited time seasonal events, but they were so fun that there was demand to bring them back permanently.

as a death wish and a death sentence player in payday 2, you will start playing similarly like in pdth. (I have almost 500 hrs in payday 2 and 100hrs in pdth as of writing this comment)
For starters, death wish is an easy difficulty ahead of the skill check difficulty mayhem. It keeps payday 2’s fast pace because not everything is threatening.
Death sentence on the other hand is where the pace slows down entirely and the difficulty difference is high. You’ll get one or two shot, taking cover is mandatory. The bigger difference is that specials keep getting spammed here.
I also disagree with the statement that all the heister’s voice lines get repetitive.

Two copy paste from my comments on another payday the heist video:
You also forgot to mention that the cops in this game had a lot, and I mean a lot, of movement mechanics, like sliding on top of cars, jumping from balconies, sliding and rolling, getting on top of cars or objects to have the high ground, and the scariest yet coolest: cloaker wallruns
Yes, back in the day cloakers would wallrun to get over obstacles quick and surprise you (here's a clip: ruclips.net/video/BVxrUTALjuU/видео.html)
And there's a lot of spots where they can do this
Funny enough, I was playing PDTH today and I loved replaying it. I bought it last year when pd2 was installing and what a different experience, it really feels like the cops are actually cops and not a bunch of brainless marines running at your general direction. Also, one thing that I loved was the enemy design, like, the heavy swat REALLY feels heavy, unlike the pd2 counterpart, also the detail where cloakers have their eyes glowing at a distance, tasers looking like a fucking mech, this game is a gem.
I'm retired of pd2, yes the game is good, but it lacks these details that I love and the atmosphere of the first game that I really missed, and I'm thinking about buying wolf pack too!

The main problem with Payday: The Heist, is Payday 2, it basically pulled a Left 4 Dead and Hitman and made the sequel a "better" version of the first game, lifting the content from the first and slapping it into the second, which isn't a bad thing, but it definitely makes buying the first game a complete waste of time to most people, because why get the older, janky version of something, when you can get the new(-ish) refined version for cheaper a lot of the time *(minus the DLC, which is still ridiculous in my opinion)*

I've retired from both Payday games. Have 1536 hours in Payday 2 and 178 hours in Payday: The Heist. The irony is that I'm reinstalling PDTH every year or two just to enjoy the game while Payday 2 literally sits in my steam library collecting dust.
I would say that PDTH had soul, while Payday 2 is a fanservice fest. A crazy one, actually.
Oh, I also don't see people mentioning difficulty with an exception of pop & bang in PDTH and fast-pased Payday 2. I can solo max difficulty with one down modifier in Payday 2 (and probably can do that from the fresh start to this day), but I'm gonna sweat and lose my shit playing Greenbridge on Overkill (or god forbid +145).
God, the soundtrack. I would take one OG Diamond Heist OST rather than 100 Donacdums or whatever. Again, Hyko is correct - Payday 2 OST is all over the place while you get chills down your spine when you boot up No Mercy with a feeling that you're doing something wrong and you're fucked.
God damn it I've started playing Payday 2 since it launched and I still prefer PDTH till this day. Sadly, people just don't play this gem of a game because PD2 is a thing.
Man, I miss OG Payday. I really do.
