During the run of Godzilla (Gojira) he has been a hero, antihero, villain. He is what the story teller needs him to be. In this incarnation he is a force of nature that keeps the balance. His breath is a blast of radiation. The energy level turned the air into plasma (the blue flames). I've been a fan of Godzilla and othe kiju sense the 1970s. As a little kid I would watch anything I could find.

At worst, Godzilla destroyed fishing boats in his territory. Only aggression on cities is after governments deployed a navy to attack him, again in his home leading to retaliation on their turf after. I have never seen Godzilla as a villain. Antagonist sure, but not villain. He is an animal. Nature. Protected himself and fed on whatever that particular iteration had him feeding on, but never out of maliciousness. I disagree with him ever being villain. Just as a lion chasing a human with a gun back to their truck after being shot at would not be a villain.

    A brief history of Godzilla...
Godzilla started with Godzilla (1954), a B/W Japanese movie, where he was depicted as a destructive creature. When the film was brought to America, not only was it dubbed into English, they also filmed scenes with American actors and inserted them into the movie because they didn't think American audiences would watch a movie with an all Japanese cast, especially so soon after World War II.
Godzilla was popular, so Japan started making sequels, where Godzilla would fight various other monsters. Eventually, he was turned into a hero who would show up to protect the world by fighting the other, evil monsters. At times some of the movies got fairly silly. Japan has been turning out a steady stream of Godzilla movies ever since.
Some of the other monsters he's fought, or fought with, include: Rodan, Mothra, Gigan, Megalon, Mechgodzilla, Ghidorah, Mecha King Ghidorah, Destroyah, Space Godzilla, Hedora, Biollante, King Kong, Anguirus, King Caesar, Battra, Orga.
In 1998, an American studio tried to make a Godzilla movie. The fans HATED it, and ridiculed it.
Then, they made this movie, which was a hit. This movie and the films that film it, are completely separate from the Japanese Godzilla movies.
Speaking of which, Japan has made two more Godzilla movies since this one came out. There was Shin Godzilla in 2016, which was another original story for the character, and this year they released Godzilla Minus One, which is supposed to be a remake of the original Godzilla.
    As for these American movies, the correct order to watch them in is;
    Godzilla (2014)
    Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
    Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Also for the record, there have been multiple King Kong movies, none of which were connected. There was the original in 1933, which also had a sequel the same year, Son of Kong, a remake in 1976, which had a sequel, King Kong Lives in 1986, and then another remake in 2005, directed by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings). Besides appearing in a Godzilla movie, Kong also had a stand-alone Japanese-American movie called King Kong Escapes, where he fought a robot duplicate of himself.

King Kong (2005) with Jack Black and Naomi Watts is the best Kong movie since the 1933 original. It won 3 Oscars, had 46 other award wins, and 104 nominations. Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings) directed it and helped write the screenplay. Set in the 1930s depression era, it has classic movie ambience, romance, heartfelt story, and exciting adventure in the Peter Jackson's style. It's a beautiful movie that stirs the emotions. I hope you react to it.

Great reaction, Dasha, thanks! I'm sorry to hear your views are going down; I don't know why that would be, as your reactions continue to be excellent! I suspect yet more RUclips/Google skullduggery, that being an incompetent monopoly that desperately needs to be reined-in.
The deep and serious emotional core of this movie was very important. Gareth Edwards, the director, knew that the last time Western audiences had seen Godzilla was in the very campy and not-well-received Roland Emmerich "Godzilla" in 1997 (which actually closely imitated "The Beast from 20 000 Fathoms", which was a 1953 movie (featuring the work of famous stop-motion pioneer Ray Harryhausen and based on a Ray Bradbury short-story, "The Fog Horn", from 1951) that heavily inspired the first "Godzilla" film in 1954), so if a franchise of any substance and endurance was to be established, Western audiences had to be re-introduced to the colossal terror and helplessness Japanese audiences found in '54, as Godzilla reflected the impact of the American nuclear destruction of entire cities on a world that had never seen anything like that level of instant carnage. Edwards managed that handily, giving the new Monsterverse a solid basis on which to build. Many at the time lamented the lack of Godzilla screen-time before the final act of the film, but I liked it, personally; I felt like it recreated the sense of frustrated helplessness of the people at the mercy of these massive forces of nature, reminding one, as only disasters can, that the natural world ultimately doesn't give a shit what humans want or need, and humans forget that at their peril (insert your own "climate crisis" parallel here, and note that it was humans seeking fuel that touched-off the whole chain of events in this narrative).

Traditionally Godzilla is neither good nor evil but finds himself adversarial to humanity by misfortune. Originally Godzilla is a product of nuclear testing so he's a living manmade natural disaster. He's not really malicious so much as confused and threatened by a world he doesn't understand and was never supposed to be a part of.
He's supposed to be tragic and a reflection that humanity and it's weapons are the real monsters. As the series moved into the 70s the character eventually became a protagonist as the films moved towards targeting a much younger audience. That period became known as the Showa era due to having been made under the reign of Emperor Showa.
The films you're watching combine the two concepts to an extent in the sense that while he isn't a man made monster he's a part of the natural order of the earth that humanity threatens to upset by it's mistreatment of the planet. He can be symbiotic and thus benevolent to humanity or he can decide humanity is too much of a threat to life on the planet. The outcome is really up to humans as to how humanity's actions will dictate his response.

    • @michaelccozens

A good summary, though I don't know if the first part is strictly accurate. Godzilla was originally meant to be a metaphor for the American nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and so was extremely hostile, in that sense, to humanity (and Japanese humanity in particular, the dead and irradiated and wounded left in his wake meant to invoke the aftermath of the US atomic bombings). Godzilla as a creature in the first movie certainly fits the description you've given, but I think it's important to note how much Japanese anger at the unprecedented horrors inflicted upon them at the end of the war (not gonna get too much into the whole political debate about the atomic bombs here, except to note that Imperial Japan was also unspeakably cruel in their conduct (look-up Unit 731) and also that the US decided to drop the bombs in part just to see what would happen, ie. to use everyone in Hiroshima and Nagasaki as unwilling human test subjects, in part due to the incredible racism that was part of the American war effort against Japan. Lots of the worst of humanity to go-around here) is part of the Godzilla concept, so Japanese audiences understood the at-least-indirect malice that Godzilla represented.
One also has to consider exactly how free Japanese creators were at the time to express any kind of enmity towards the US, which was essentially ruling the nation through General Douglas MacArthur. Again, not to get too much into the history, but part of the reason the US dropped the bombs was that they were worried the Soviets were going to invade and conquer Japan on their own at the end of WW2, which would mean that any post-war American attack on Soviet territory from the East would have to be an amphibious invasion launched from as far away as Australia. The US, by then, knew very well how difficult such operations were, and how important having a base of operations very close to the landing areas (eg having the UK to use as a base in the amphibious invasion of Nazi-occupied mainland Europe on D-Day) was to military success, and so were very anxious to have Japan to use if they wished to invade Soviet-held mainland Asia, as opposed to having to sail an invasion force thousands of kilometers from Australia or elsewhere. So the Americans essentially decided to give Imperial Japan's war crimes a pass (no "Nuremberg of the East", which, incidentally, is why such a large "Imperial Japan did nothing wrong" far-right element still exists in Japanese politics today) in favour of rebuilding Japan as an ally as quickly as possible to forestall Stalin seizing the islands via force. MacArthur was basically God Emperor of the nation for 6 years post-war, and, as you can imagine, his regime was not keen to have the Japanese reminded of American acts against them.

@@michaelccozens Where I disagree with you is the interpretation that Godzilla himself is supposed to symbolize the atomic bomb itself. The prevailing theme of the original Godzilla and even it's much butchered, censored, and whitewashed American version Godzilla: King Of The Monsters isn't actually the monster it's weapons created by mankind specifically weapons of mass destruction. The destruction Godzilla himself wrecks is obviously symbolically a reference to Hiroshima it's basically shot for shot the same footage.
But the real conflict of the movie isn't Godzilla or even what to do about him it's the fact that the ONLY thing that can be done about him is using and thereby bringing to public light an incredibly dangerous weapon of mass destruction developed by Dr. Serizawa the oxygen destroyer. Godzilla is symbolic of the consequences of mans weapons not of the weapon itself. The movie goes very far out of it's way to explain his origins and that he is a prehistoric creature mutated by nuclear testing.
This would be unnecessary if the intention was for Godzilla to directly symbolize the bomb itself. He doesn't need an origin that specific to level Tokyo in the exact same way Hiroshima was. Godzilla is no more malicious than the bomb which itself isn't malicious it's an object. It's the maliciousness of man that causes the bomb to even exist in the first place yet alone be used. This is a theme that is further expanded upon in Godzilla Returns where the fictional Japanese prime minister cries at the death of Godzilla despite all the damage Godzilla had wrecked and the lives he had taken.
Because Godzilla himself is as innocent as any animal is. The U.S. version Godzilla 1985 which is highly Americanized even has a short speech from Raymond Burr about this meaning in reference to Godzilla. And 1985 would be the film you should expect would NOT want to expound on that concept being that America is perhaps the most pro nuclear weapon country in the world. I agree with essentially everything else you said and honestly if I had it my way Godzilla would be a mandatory watch in world history at the very least in college. It's about the closest you can get to understanding the Japanese mindset post war.
"Nature has a way, sometimes, of reminding Man of just how small he is. She occasionally throws up the terrible offsprings of our pride and carelessness... to remind us of how puny we really are in the face of a tornado, an earthquake, or a Godzilla. The reckless ambitions of Man are often dwarfed by their dangerous consequences. For now, Godzilla - that strangely innocent and tragic monster - has gone to earth. Whether he returns or not, or is never again seen by human eyes, the things he has taught us... remain."
"General, Godzilla's like a hurricane or a tidal wave. We must approach him as we would a force of nature. We must understand him. Deal with him. Perhaps even try to communicate with him."
      Raymond Burr as Steve Martin

World War 2 politics aside, (there is a lot there to cover from all sides of the conflict, war is always complicated where all sides do wrong)...
In the first movie Godzilla was a legend to the people of an isolated island. They knew of him but he generally didn't bother them. The only ones he was credited attacking were fishing boats. Japanese government having learned of these and the legend of Godzilla deployed a navy to destroy him. In retaliation he found himself in the Tokyo bay. Going just off this, Godzilla even in the first iteration was just there until forced out by humans and their weaponry. The desire for man to kill what they fear was the problem that led them to get attacked. This being the most adversarial version of Godzilla, the OP is more correct. Godzilla was a victim both in his creation and in being attacked in his own territory. Man is the true villain in every iteration. Godzilla at worst is just nature.
Never liked the Hero versions though. I always prefer the versions where Godzilla couldn't care less about humans, he just does Godzilla things lol.

I'd argue that GMK is Godzilla at his worst. He's anything but natural in that film, being the collective anger of Japan's WWII victims, wishing to inflict that same pain on Japan.

You might have gotten mixed-up information. Skip the latest movies and watch ONLY Godzilla G1: it is a complete redo of the original film from the 1950s and is outstanding and everything you would want in a film like this, made by the original Japanese's studios. Anything else pales to it. I has won many awards. The other films seem made for fun, but Godzilla G1 is made to terrify!

Personal taste: I prefer the more serious and dramatic Monsterverse writing. Later on, the movies change to a more lighthearted and funny atmosphere. To me, that takes away from the gravity of the situation that the world is in.
I watched a lot of Godzilla movies as a kid, and I get that much of it was also silly. As a kid, I didn't mind it. As an adult, I prefer the more serious and heavy writing than the goofiness.
I'm sure there are people who feel the opposite, and that's fine. We all have our preferences.
