- A Bong Joon Ho Film
The digitally remastered film will be in theaters nationwide October 19th and October 20th for a two night limited theatrical engagement in partnership with Fathom Events. The special presentation of the film will include exclusive content plus a post-screening conversation with Bong Joon Ho and celebrated filmmaker Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Hot Fuzz).
MEMORIES OF MURDER tells the harrowing true story of the hunt for a sadistic serial rapist and murderer terrorizing a small province in 1980s South Korea. Marking the first of many successful collaborations between four-time Oscar winner Bong Joon Ho and leading man Song Kang Ho, the film follows the paths of three increasingly desperate detectives as they attempt to decipher the violent mind of a killer in a futile effort to solve the case. Now, seventeen years after its initial release, and a year after the real culprit was identified, this cult classic takes its place as a modern masterpiece. - Кино
Song Kang-ho, who was already a famous actor at the time of filming "Memories of Murder", accepted the casting of an unknown director Bong Joon-ho because of their special relationship. When Song was an unknown actor and Bong was the assistant director of a movie, Bong was the only film staff member to give feedback by text message to Song, who failed the audition. When the casting came, Song remembered the name of the assistant director who cared about him in his humble days.
Thanks for the insight !!
By the way, I also recommend Joint Security Area (2000), which is the movie that made Song a star.
@@berkindurmaz3442 brilliant!
bong and song are such wholesome men
And the rest is history...
Korean movies has this unique way of adding comedy stuff to every movies, and I love it
Yes!!! I think it heightens the emotions more because the humour seems so out of place. For me when I laugh instead of reducing the tension, it makes me more tensed and nervous.
Parag Borob Even Seven had humor... Happens in all countries. This director specifically mixes in humor and his films might be most of the films you are thinking of even...
bro u never seen a non korean movie before?
This... That is what makes them very memorable to me
Korean movies are perfect for switching genres everytime.. When they go into comedy, it's unexpected but never out of place. Same with drama, horror, gore or tension
The trailer looks darker, whereas the film has some comedy relief
Yeah, this is not a good trailer. It almost makes it look like a horror in parts.
All his films do
@@crossmr the movie is kinda scary tbh
The movie IS dark as fuck though. Better to market it as a thriller and have viewers be surprised there’s some levity, than the other way around.
In my view the whole story is heavy hearted.
People recognizing Bong Jon Hoo because of Parasite. You haven't seen his best yet.
Which do you think is his best?
Till now for me it's Memories of a Murder and Mother. Parasite is also good but not as great as those.
I haven't seen Okja and Barking Dogs never bite yet.
Snowpiercer is also a very worthy mention.

@@spati86 okja is just an okay popcorn movie for me. Not worth the trouble. Personally, I rank Memories of Murder ahead of Parasite and Mother. Showpiecer was decent but not where close as good or as original as the top 3 I mentioned
Bong Joon Ho is like a novelist. He has his own genre and own style of storytelling. Incredible director and his craft is very him.
Who is the kiler
He and David Fincher are a lot alike in that way, which is funny because I consider this movie and Fincher's Zodiac to be kinda companion pieces in terms of subject and tone
Easily top 3 from Bong Joon Ho
what are the other two? :)
For me,
1. Memories of Murder
2. Mother
3. Parasite
@@josephine1465 I have the same opinion as you.
Easily a top Korean film and even just a top crime movie in general.
The topmost actually...
Watched this movie ten plus years ago. Told everyone about this movie and Bong Joon-ho, ten years ago. I was told to take my subtitled films and bugger off. Now all those people watched Parasite, then tell me to watch this movie. I say, "뭐?"

This movie is perfect with no boring scenes for every minute.
I am confident that this movie is by far the best film in the 100-year history of Korean movies.
If you knew Bong Joon-ho through Parasite, you only knew half of Bong Joon-ho's proper value.
The unfortunate thing is that there are some cultural barriers for foreigners who cannot understand Korea exactly in the 1980s.
Saw this tonight on my husband's suggestion, and I'm just blown away. The score, the pacing, the tone... one of the best movies I've seen, Bong Joon Ho is a genius. Also impressed by how they dealt with that ending considering the real murderer was found well after the movie was made.
In which ott platform?
This movie got me into Korean cinema for many years ago, it will forever hold a special place for me.
this is a masterclass in trailer editing. even Fincher saw this trailer and was like "woah"
Everybody here is either praising Bong Joon ho or Song Kang ho, but I'd like to praise whoever made this trailer. It's just extraordinary in every way. Bong Joon Ho would be very happy watching this.
This is one of the best crime films in history.
Ive seen this film about 4 times or 5 times yet every time gives me chills whenever I think of it . You donot just watch this film, you participate in it . This remains with you forever

Handsdown, the best Crime Drama in the history of filmmaking....this is a masterpeice that Bong Joon Ho, himself would not able to make again...(though I want him to)...but this level of excellence simply cannot be acheived twice....I am breaking down this movie my-self and I am blown away by the levels this movie projects in each department...especially writing....you watch it again and again...and you will find something new everytime....this is my filmschool....Also the trailer doesn't do justice to the film...you are missing the humour and tragedy this film provides....
I can never forget the feelings this movie left me with, until now
The best based on a true grim story of a serial killer ever made. This movie is a true masterpiece that is far ahead of time, this movie will live forever. It should have been won at least five Oscars, best picture, best directing, best acting, best cinematography... I've watched it in 2008 and I've rewatched like 7 times and I'm still impressed by Bong Jon Hoo's vision and his psychological mindset, literally a living legend. The cast did a phenomenal job, especially the two detectives, just insanely talented and did the true story its justice. If Parasite impressed you, this will blow your mind.
Well said
I think this is the most fascinating film in Bong's career.
I love this film much more than Parasite.
agreed. Parasite might be the "entertaining" one in his filmography, but haㄴ nothing on 살인의 추억 (Memories of Murder)
because this film is a just better one.
agree
Parasite is great, but this and Mother and Bong Joon Ho's masterpiece.
mother is unrated too
Love Mother. BJH breaks the rules in misdirection . The Man From Nowhere playing a retard is unbelievable
mother is awesome
Bong Joon-Ho's masterpiece. Such a riveting trailer, I wish I could watch this on the big screen. If you loved Memories of Murder, do watch David Fincher's classic Zodiac also.
no, classic isn't DF's zodiac, classic is Bong's Memories of murder
Absolute companion pieces.
Zodiac has a powerhouse cast especially Jake Gyllenhaal.
Not because I'm a fangirl.

Prisoners from Villenueve also
While a total body count was never mentioned in the film, at least 10 similar murders were committed in the Hwaseong area between October 1986 and April 1991. This killing spree became known as the Hwaseong serial murders.
Some of the details of the murders, such as the killer gagging the women with their underwear, were also taken from the case.[10] As in the film, the investigators found bodily fluids suspected to belong to the murderer in the crime scenes, but did not have access to equipment to determine whether the DNA matched with the suspects until late in the investigations. After the ninth murder, DNA evidence was sent to Japan (unlike the film, where it was sent to America) for analysis, but the results did not correspond with the suspects.[11]
As in the film, at the time of its release, the actual murderer had not yet been caught. As the case was growing closer to reaching the statute of limitations, South Korea's leading Uri Party sought to amend the law to give the prosecutors more time to find the murderer. However, in 2006, the statute of limitations was reached for the last-known victim.[12] More than 13 years later, on 18 September 2019, police announced that a man in his 50s, Lee Choon-jae, had been identified as a suspect in the killings.[13] He was identified after DNA from the underwear of one of the victims was matched with his, and subsequent evidence linked him to four of the nine unsolved murders.[14] At the time he was identified he was already serving a life sentence at a prison in Busan for the rape and murder of his sister-in-law

Yes. Bong Joon Ho said it creeped him out that the actual murderer was probably watching the movie at a theater. Hence the ending.

Memories of Murder should be released on The Criterion Collection, it's quite an underrated film.
I read an article somewhere that Criterion is planning a Parasite and Memories of Murder Blu-ray release, with the former coming out next month but no news yet on the release date of MoM.
It's getting added in December.
@@MagnitudeReviews that's great to hear. I was guessing that was going to be the case since Parasite is being added and Neon has been big on getting the rights for distribution.

Not underrated at all.
I'm 1000% sure David Fincher referred to this movie for the movie . Memories of Murder was 4 years earlier.
Trust me. After finishing this movie, you can't stop thinking about the ending. No matter how many times you rewatch.
This film will never let you settle down on your seats. A true gem of Korean cinema. In my opinion it's the best Bong Joon-ho movie, a movie in the league of Seven, Psycho and Chinatown.
One of the best films in the past 100 years and absolutely best thriller.

2003 was golden year for Korean Film History
It was...Memories of Murder, Save The Green Planet, OLDBOY, A Tale of Two sisters, Silmido, Untold Scandal (the period piece..undertoned sexy one)...
@@narima_atmosphere Except silmido. It had commercial success but It's a piece of shit.
Every Bong Joon Ho movie is a classic. That's how good he is.
A film like this is huge treat for cinephiles.. as story goes on the way it builds the unknown figure mystery. there's also humour in grotesque and strange manner. Beautifully executed shots. Eccentric performances. Oh. An unforgettable gem.
This movie is way ahead when compared to 2003. Absolutely wonderfull. I was fully invested throughout and man what an ending.
One of the finest crime thrillers I've watched, without a doubt.
I remember seeing it last year after becoming a bonafide bong fan. I have seen all of his works including his contributions to anthology films. But this film is Bong's masterpiece, hands down. It almost feels like with every film, director Bong tries to reach the level of excellence that he reached with this film. If you are a fan of parasite, after seeing this film, parasite will just appear some other ordinary film in bong's filmography. The cinematography is good and all, but the pure brilliance that bong reaches with the script itself, is unparalleled. And mind you, it was way back in 2002-03. But I can surely say it's just a timeless masterpiece, so much that even today's films will appear fussy and just caricatures when compared to this film. Don't read any review or plot summary. Just go into it cold. Memories of murder won't remain just a film, it will etch itself in your heart as an EXPERIENCE.
yep, still no Korean director has surpassed this movie's level of greatness...
so true...this level of excellence cannot be acheived again....
Such detailed analysis and appreciation shows that you are a die hard fan of bong, good brother, im really excited to watch it, because im bored of Bollywood and Hollywood movies produced these days...

Also the background music was so hauntingly beautiful it made me tear up a bit. Masterpiece for a reason!
On the heels of Parasite, Apollo 11, the criminally underseen Luce, and other recent gems, NEON is a film studio that has quietly turned into an indie powerhouse. This film’s trailer only serves to validate that sentiment.
You missed this one little film called Portrait of a Lady on Fire and the upcoming film Ammonite.
This film is 17 years old btw.

The term 'masterpiece' gets thrown a lot but this film, truly is a masterpiece.
Bong Joon Ho is only from a few member of directors who keep u engaged RESPECT
This, I feel is the best work of Bong Joon Ho. This gave me more sleepless nights than Parasite. Bong Joon Ho took the purpose of filmmaking to entirely another level with this movie. I mean trying to help the real world case, who has done such? I wish they had kept the original soundtrack in the trailer.
Bong Joon Ho is a master in storyteller for this movie into a masterpiece! Legendary.
This movie is amazing. Everybody should watch it. South Korean cinema is full of masterpieces.
Eventually, the origin of Bong Joon-ho is "Memories of Murder(Korean name is "살인의 추억"). I was born in 1984, when I was freshman, this movie was released in Korea. I was very lucky man because in 2003, so many "Masterpiece grade" Korean movies were released in Korea. These movies are "Classic(클래식)", "Save the Green Planet!(지구를 지켜라!)", "Memories of Mulder(살인의 추억)", "Oldboy(올드보이)" and "A Tale Of Two Sisters(장화,홍련)". I watched all these movies in theater. If you are interested in Korean movie, I recommend these five movies.
This is one of the best films ever made period. I am yet to see a movies which blends thriller, mystery, horror, comedy, action as well this this. And then there is that epic ending
