    The director said he knew the criminal would come to watch his film and laugh at how he was never caught. So the eyes are us looking at the criminal. We still have not forgotten. We see you. Very powerful message.

But from halfway to the end of the movie there's a huge accent on suspect Park Hyung-gyu so a lot of people will think it was him... Or the killer was someone who escaped the investigation and will be unknown forever...
      Still, the movie is a true masterpiece. The story has been put together so well that I really feel sympathy for the caracters and the acting and choice of music deserves the highest rewards!

    What a brilliantly metaphoric ending. Memories of a murder, as I have taken it, is more of a statement about the movie rather than merely a title. The killer at large, out of morbid curiosity, sits down to watch the movie about him and the murders he committed years ago. He recounts how it happens, contrasting reality with the events in the movie, recalling his memories of the murder.
    In the ending we see Park glance around for a couple of seconds before looking sternly ahead. But just where does his gaze lead? It leads to the theatres, to the living rooms, to sloppily set up screen projectors, to computer screens, it leads to the millions that have watched this movie. And there is Park, scanning every person, locking eyes with each member of the audience, hoping to find the killer. And you know what? Park thinks he can find him; all he has to do is look the killer in the eyes. In the moments before the credits roll, Park is given that very opportunity, for the span of a few seconds Park meets the gaze of the killer before fading to black.

    This movie is a masterpiece, truly brilliant, Memories of Murder .. as if the movie was made for the murderer, the memories of the murderer .. because obviously nobody has these memories but the murderer himself. At the end, that look of desperation and anger in his eyes it's as if he's looking right through the murderer who might be sitting in front of the screen just like any other '' plain, normal '' person, watching his memories that has been made into a movie, after he committed his perfect crimes, the actor gives him this look, he sends him a message.
    I think what she meant by plain and ordinary was he was just another guy, very normal, nothing suspicious about him, just like any other human being, while the detectives always suspected psychos, perverts, and mentally challenged people the killer was in fact just a mere ordinary person. Pretty scary.

The suspect looks him in the eyes and he finally admits it, and says "shit, i dont know". It demonstrates the significance of him thinking he knew it all when he didn't.

  • @bijanadhikari7928
    @bijanadhikari7928 2 года назад +400

    Such a chilling way to break the fourth wall. He isn't just looking at the audience, he is actually searching for the killer here. He has an assumption throughout the film that he can look someone in the eyes and tell if they are the real culprit or not. Now after everything that has happened and he isn't so sure of himself he has this last glance of terror and horror when he comes to a realization that a real murderer can be anyone especially when they are normal-looking people. His illusion is shattered here and knowing that someone actually is watching him through the camera might be what he was looking for makes this so unsettling and disturbing. Such a profound way to end the film right there.

    Interesting note about the movie title : In Korean, there are 2 words for 'memory', which are gi-eok and chu-eok. Gi-eok means memory but without any negative nor positive connotations. It is neutral, just a straightforward word for memory. Chu-eok, however, means fond memory, or cherished memory. And Bong used the word for fond memory in the title. So it is not 'Memories of Murder' but 'Fond Memories of Murder'. Therefore, it gets lost in translation but the original Korean title sets up an oxymoron immediately and makes us wonder, How can a murder be a fond memory? Maybe for the murderer, but how so for everyone else? What did Bong intend by it? This movie has been my favorite for 10 years now and I still ponder on that sometimes.

      I always feel like this story is much more than about the murders, it harkens back to the nostalgia of what it was like living in Korea in the 80s - the hot summers, the countries large-scale industrialization, the riots - it was a very peculiar climate to live in

    • @perusing350
      @perusing350 2 года назад +9

      @@victormeas7898 Absolutely agree, I feel that too! The golden fields particularly make us feel that nostalgia. Tied to your comment, I also think the movie was a commentary on life/society in Korea. The murder seemed to be a shift between old Korean society in which everything is 'personal' represented by the small town detective (everyone trusts each other and neighbors are like family, but this leads to an underbelly of cruelty and inaccuracy) and the new Korean society in which everything is 'professional/modern' represented by the Seoul capital city detective (everyone is a stranger, someone to be on guard against at least at first, but things are kept more fair, correct, and efficient). The fact that anyone "ordinary" (as this girl says) could be a serial killer really shatters that default human affection, called 'jeong' (정) in Korea, that Korean society is known for.

      Absolutely! English isn't my first language either, so hopefully I explained it well.
      The ending scene is set a couple years later after the murders happened. The detective (the guy in this video) went back to the murder scene, because he still doesn't understand how they haven't catched the guy who did the murders yet. While looking there, he's approached by a stranger, a curious little girl who asks him what he's doing there. After a bit of talking, she reveals that there was another guy looking down there just like the detective. The detective is now curious and asks her how this other guy looks like (suspecting that that's probably the murderer/killer) and she replies that he was just an ordinary guy who looked just like any other guy. Basically implying that anyone could've been the killer, and that's what makes this world scary. Which is why, at the ending scene he suddenly looks at the camera, and he looks at US. He's looking at the AUDIENCE. Because If the killer was just some regular guy, he could be our friend, he could be our cousin, or he...could be watching this movie right now.

      A 56 year-old prime suspect has been imprisoned for 24 years after recieving a life sentence for raping and killing his wife's younger sister in 1994. A new DNA profiling technique has made identification of murderer's DNA from old evidences of 3 murders out of 9. Prison guards said he was quiet and even a model prisoner. But he is denying everything now and he will not be charged because the statute of limitations expired in 2006. He was born and raised in Hwa-seong city. 6 of the 9 murders took place within a 3-km radius of his former home. Model prisoners serving a life sentence could be possibly freed on parole after at least 20 year-imprisonment. Police is waiting for another DNA tests' results and keep questioning him. I heard that a retired detective squad chief in charge of this case in the past cried when he heard of this news.

    3:09 This bit here is why this movie, the actor and the director are so brilliant. When we construct images and review memories in our brain, what we do is we aren't necesarily -looking- at something, we may visualize them but different parts of our brain activate and our eyes react to it, which is why when we're thinking and explaining something on the fly we move our eyes like that. Just imagine what was going through the character's head at that moment.

    In 2:38, you could see an emotion in there. Before asking the question, it's as if he was reluctant to ask. He looked to the side, kinda took a breath a bit, as if a breath of a man who was tired of it all, but asks anyway.
    That moment looked to me as if the then-retired detective had finally put the case behind him, forever regretting that they never solved it. He didn't want to ask the girl because he knew that the lead she'll give might just end up along with the rest of dead leads they piled up. But then, he asked her anyway, as if hearing a child's excuse heard over and over again. He didn't want to ask because he was done with the case, BUT deep inside wanted to find the truth. A lost passion, if you will. He was drawn back, and upon hearing her answer, he looks at the camera as if he's telling us that the case is back on.
