The movie was based on a true story, and even until its release in 2003, the culprit had not been caught(He was actually arrested in 2019). In the final scene of the movie, the protagonist's direct gaze into the camera symbolizes staring at the culprit who might be watching this movie from somewhere in the audience.

Oh wow, I didn't catch this until watching your post discussion. Thought you guys knew about this going in.
The movie here is based on a true story called the 'Hwaseong serial murders'. 15 women and girls were found murdered between 1986 and 1994. It was South Korea's first case of dealing with a serial killer. Unsurprisingly, the entire investigation was a mess. The police were way in over their head. The interrogations, mishandling of evidence, sloppy detective work, etc. Bong captured all of this with the acts of the detectives in this film.
Long story short, they finally caught the culprit in September 2019 with heavy advancement of DNA testing. The guy's name is Lee Choon-jae, and he was already serving life in prison for the murder of his sister-in-law in 1994, which explains why the murders stopped all of a sudden. Lee confessed in full in 2020 and has also said he watched Memories of Murder in prison.
The character of Kwang-ho, the developmentally disabled character, is based on Yoon Sung-yeo. Yoon was beaten and coerced by the local police until confessing to the murders. It was a LONG process with a lot of cops thinking they had the right suspect as opposed to the majority of the public, who didn't believe he was the actual criminal. One of Bong's motivations of making the movie was to cast more doubt on Yoon's charge and reignite the talk of the case. All in all, Yoon spent nearly 20 years in jail before being released in 2009 on parole. After Lee's capture in 2019, Yoon and his family sought a complete acquittal and compensation for his wrongful conviction. He was awarded $2.2 million after a court sided with him.
As for the ending of the film. Bong wanted Song Kang-ho to look into the camera to remind the killer, wherever he was at the time, that the case wasn't going to be easily forgotten. He also wanted the public to realize that this killer was still out there, possibly among them, living his life like a normal "ordinary" person.
Thanks for watching this amazing film guys.

hey, may I just add a little detail that amazed me, in the last part of the 2003 movie it showed that the suspect might be around somewhere looking "ordinary." They added that part because they believed he wasn't caught yet. (to cast doubt on Yoon's arrest)
The funny part is, the suspect was quite smug that he didn't get caught with the murders. He said that the police didn't suspect him at all. He said he just breezed through them.
When in fact, it was shown in the movie, that the prime suspect (the one the investigator almost killed in the end), had the characteristics of the real suspect himself. The actor and the suspect looked alike. Said he was skinny and had a look of some sort. Ultimately, he also just got out of the Military during that time. Which, in the movie, they all got those characters rightly portrayed.
The directors and investigators didn't know the fact that they were portraying the actual suspect; displaying an open ending in 2003, when in fact he was caught on 1994, and after the 2019 confession, it just shows they were right on track. While the suspect thought he hid well, the movie shows that he didn't do a very good job, in fact, they almost caught him. Too bad they didn't have "solid" evidence.

When the movie was released, it was an unsolved case where the culprit was not caught yet
the girl's last line, "The culprit looks normal," means that someone who looks normal around us can be the culprit
actor Song Kang-ho looks straight into the camera, and by staring directly at the criminal who may be watching the movie somewhere, it means, "We're always watching you and we'll catch you."
I think Bong Joon Ho's movie is more fun because I can interpret the meanings that are presented

  • @AH86ac

This is a masterpiece and incredible film. The story is based on true crime event and very famous one, known as one of the most unsolved murder mystery/serial killing in Korea (but in around 2019, finally they caught the serial killer unintentionally and accidentally). When Director Bong made this film, it was still mystery and he could capture the uncertain and unclear killer but still gave us amazing story line. Sublime.
As I remembered the real killer was one of the many young men in that village that investigated by police but he was never be the suspect.
You can watch "Mother", that's another Director Bong's amazing murder mystery. really good one.

It had served the police force as a trauma. It was something that every police men echoed 'Gotta get this sucker' in their mind. Most of the detective served in 80's and 90's retired and they kept all the evidence from the crime scenes, hoping that future technology would better analyze the suspect. So it did. They found the DNA match from the inmate.

Apart from Parasite, Memories of Murder is my favourite from Bong Joon Ho. Knowing that the real murder was not yet captured when the film was made make this film even more impressive. What a vision by Bong Joon Ho.

I have interpreted this climax like this. At the time of release the killer was still not caught at least for the murders he committed so in the end the main actor was looking at the viewers in cinema halls by giving a impression that the killer might be sitting among them or watching the film from somewhere.

At that time, DNA analysis technology had just been released. Therefore, even if the suspect's DNA was collected, it could not be clearly identified.
The investigators in the case regretted for the rest of their lives that they could not catch the culprit and entrusted the case to their juniors.
About 40 years later, DNA samples were obtained again from evidence left behind by high-ranking investigators, and the real culprit was finally revealed.

I rate this film the highest among director Bong Joon-ho's films.
This is a real incident. At that time, Korea was a dictatorship. It expresses well the atmosphere of the police at the time. In fact, there were several instances of this type of forced criminalization.
The actual culprit will be revealed much later.
The last scene of the movie is,
This scene was included because it was expected that the murderer, who had not been caught at the time of the film's release, would see this film.
(It is said that the criminal actually saw this movie.)
    An absolute masterpiece movie.

Audiences that know Bong Joon-Ho through Snowpiercer and Parasite might think Parasite is his best film, but I'd argue that his masterpiece is Memories of Murder.
Based mostly on the true case of the first identified serial killer in Korea's modern history, Memories of Murder shows beautifully yet with a lot of bleakness and cynism how the investigation was mishandleled in all the worst possible ways and let to the murderer evading police by the time the movie was made.
A pretty unflatering portray of Korea of the time, but such a riveting experience.
Since I've seen it, it has jumped in my list of 10 favorite movies of all time.
A required viewing for anyone who loves cinema (and for all aprentice detectives to know what NOT to do in an police investigation).

    1. The criminal was not caught when this movie was released, but in 2019, it was confirmed that the criminal was sentenced to death for another crime and is in prison.
    2. Although this film does not reveal it directly, it indirectly criticizes the ruthless rule of the military regime in the 1980s.
    3. Starting in 2003, when Memories of Murder and Old Boy were released, the Korean film industry began to expand both quantitatively and qualitatively, and for Koreans, this feels similar to the year 1492 when Columbus discovered the American continent.

The girl had the same band-aid that he applied on her at the school infirmary, which is why he tried to cover the girl's corpse with her clothes when the police removed her band-aid as a sign respect for her. This is also what i think motivated him to go mad and directly drag the killer from his own home and give some physical retaliation, which is very unlike his usual sensible character.

I suggest you read about the case. The murderer was caught in 2019 and just like his description, he was an average looking guy with soft hands.
While the guy they suspected (the one whose DNA results came back inconclusive) was not the murderer, the actor in the film does look like the real culprit, that's some weird twist of fate.
They caught someone, or rather, dropped the case on someone, who was in jail for 30 years before he was exonerated and the man was LIMPING.
Like how did they even think it could have been the same man running after young women in the open?
Like the movie describes, the interrogations were anything but proffessional and 4 of the scores of people suspected actually commited suicide.
The worse part is that one of the victim was only 8 years old and the police feared the public outrage would put too much pressure on them so they lied to her parents and said she ran away.
For 30 years they had the hopes she was still alive.
This movie is superb, a masterpiece, but also a cautionary tale waht NOT TO DO as a detective.
Btw, the murderer was in jail sice 1994. He had been arrested for the rape and murder of his sister in law and by chance and an advancement in forensic he was discovered to be linked to the murders 15 years after the film was made.
He wasn't interested in seeing the movie and said he won't be demanding parole because he knows there is no chance he could get out and people would just ignore him so he rather stay in jail till his last day.

finally found it in 2019. However, it turned out that in 1995, he sexually assaulted and killed his 19-year-old sister-in-law (that is, his wife's sister), received a life sentence, and was serving 24 years as a model prisoner at the Busan Prison.
I think I lived a meticulously exemplary life, knowing that only exemplary prisoners can be granted parole after 20 years. Scary guy. I almost got released.
Of course, it can't be concluded in the movie. It was one of the top three unsolved cases in Korea that couldn't be concluded.
However, DNA was recently discovered at the end of September 2019, and it was revealed that the leading suspect was Lee Chun-jae, who is currently serving a life imprisonment sentence.
(After flatly denying it, Lee Chun-jae confessed to committing all nine cases of Hwaseong on October 1, 2019, after putting in a profiler, presenting DNA evidence, and persuading him. A total of 14 cases were involved. He confessed more that he had raped three cases before Hwaseong murder and two and 30 cases before sister-in-law murder in Suwon and Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. In the best eight years in the history of the Republic of Korea, 15 people were killed, 30 were raped and attempted rape.
It's a 100% real case, and it's a rare serial murder case that all Koreans know except for children.
At the present time, it would have been caught quickly, but at the time of 1986, scientific investigations and CCTV were so poor that it is a pity that we could not catch them.
I found out that it's so similar to Park Hyun-kyu in that movie that I got goosebumps. At that time, the green montage and high school graduation pictures were almost identical, and the place where you live, the company, the appearance, the crime after the military discharge, etc. were so consistent.

Too bad they couldn't indict the perpetrator for the murders. S. Korea had statutory limitations on murder of 17 years back then. The limitations have been lifted since 2015 effective for murder cases from 2003. The perpetrator of the murders rendered in the movie is still incarcerated for other crimes he committed. He practically kissed his chances of parole good-bye with the revelation though. The movie is my all-time favorite along with the entire Star Wars franchise.

This movie is based on a true story.
It was unfinished until the ending of the last movie. However, in reality, the movie was completed when the culprit was revealed in 2019.
In fact, the culprit looked like a prime suspect in a movie.
This movie was truly completed like that.

THIS IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY. THE ACTUAL MURDERER WAS CAUGHT 30 YEARS LATER LIKE IN 2019 ( THE REASON WHY HE LOOKED IN THE CAMERA WAS BECAUSE THIS MOVIE WAS RELEASED IN 2003 AND BACK THEN THE KILLER WAS STILL NOT CAUGHT AT ALL, SO THE DIRECTOR MADE THE MOVIE FOR THE KILLER BCZ KILLERS LIKE COMING BACK TO THEIR MURDERS SO HE THOUGHT THAT THE ACTUAL MURDEROR WOULD ALSO SEE THIS MOVIE AND KNOW THAT PEOPLE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN THE CRIMES- ALSO THE REASON WHY HE STARES INTO THE CAMERA IN THE END IS BECAUSE HE IS ACTUALLY SEEING THE MURDEROR , he said he would identify the murderer by looking into his eyes so he is locking eyes with the actual killer who was still among us as the child describes-ORDINARY) he was caught in 2019

At the time the movie was set, DNA technology was non-existent in Korea,
but with the development of DNA technology, the criminal was eventually caught in prison.
The criminal was already in prison serving a life sentence for killing his sister-in-law.
Previous murder cases could not be punished because the statute of limitations had already passed.
Until 2015, there was a statute of limitations for murder, but it was abolished.
Now, if the evidence is well preserved, even the last name of the criminal can be found using DNA.
This is because the last name is paternally inherited, except for adoption or some cases.
The criminal said he watched the movie in prison and didn't think much of the ending scene.

It is unknown whether the movis's popularity in fluenced it, but it was not until 2019 that the real culprit was caught through DNA analysis due to the development of scientific investigation.
He was already serving a life sentence for other murder crimes, and he obtained a confession through interrogation with analytical evidence.
Unfortunately, however, the cases at that time were past the statute of limitation, so additional punishment was impossible...
