- Bong Joon Ho brings his singular mastery home to Korea in this pitch-black modern fairytale. Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide "indispensable" luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims' newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks.

Just some Porg with Internet access - There’s this one particular scene of a guy in a basement peeking out that it looks like a ghost while the rich son is eating a cake at night. Many people said that scene haunts them, but it’s only for like a split second so you can still skip that part. Just be alert when the scene when the rich son is about to eat a cake at night is about to come. But overall, the movie is beyond amazing, and it’s a must-watch. You won’t regret watching this.

I think they betted on promoting its film based on word of mouth and I think that’s exactly what happened. I went in just knowing that it was a great movie from others and having seen this director’s previous films, knew the movie was going to be different from the average Hollywood bland.
Director Bong specifically requested the trailer not to spoil the movie. The promoters had to squeeze their head trying their best to put little but yet make it interesting.
Looks like I'm not the only one who search for the trailer after the Oscar's wins lol

@@coquijean yea exactly. Thats the real trick. Without spoiling anything, I can tell that this movie is on complete new level. And most importantly, something that you won't see in any other movie. From story side. I haven't seen anything even close to Parasite. Its talking about differences between rich and poor. And trailer itself, without spoiling, shows how poor family went into rich house and attempt to take over. Symbolizing "parasite" I guess. Now with this knowledge, you can kinda understand who is poor, and what is actually happening in the movie. I highly suggest you to watch the movie, you won't regret it!

People need to stop complaining about this movie not being in English. I would hate it if it was dubbed or if there was a English remake. It's specific to Korean society and it wouldn't make sense having it in English. Having it in Korean is more fitting.

If people want an American version they can watch "Get Out" which has more racial commentary than social commentary but both movies gave me similar feelings. Overall they're both worth watching.

During the scene when Parks were watching over their son and Kims were below the coffee table,Parks said that they couldn't explain the "smell" of Mr. Kim. They can sense it but they can't describe it. It's like a metaphor to say that they can see the poor but can't describe their feeling of poverty because they have never experienced it,they have never been poor. He even said Subway people smell like that. And riches don't use Subway.
Bong said if we have people who are around us ( even are close to us ) get smelly, we never tell you're so smelly. Because the part of something smell from someone is placed a taboo on and very vague area to speak out.

Someone pointed out that the way the owner of the house thought he had a motion sensor for the lights in the staircase, oblivious to the fact that it was someone's dedicated work that made them go on exactly when he went up the stairs was such a great metaphor for how middle and upper class people don't think about, or don't even know, how much effort and work go into things we take completely for granted.

I didn't think this movie was dark at all... The way poor people in Korea are treated is not pleasant and it was showcased really well in this movie. What was dark aside from the murders? I don't know.
It just makes me feel uncomfortable I think that’s the big part about this movie, and surprisingly this movie got not much disturbing scenes include nudity or extreme violence(well a little but inevitable)
That's Korean cinema for you. Bong is especially a master of this. He blends comedy so well with any genre. Watch The Host for a great example. Another amazing movie from him.

The Artist won the best picture in 2012, 8 years ago. I get that it is a silent film, but it is still a french film none the less. I guess the only part it doesn't meet is the language bit, but all silent movies have no language.

For those who are new to Korean movies watch memories of murder, the host and mother which is also directed by bong. Some other movies like oldboy, train to busan, wailing, A taxi driver, I saw the devil, handmaiden and much more. Trust me these movies will make an impact.
Thanks for saying this. I realized too how far ahead Koreans are in their film industry. Hollywood is no longer the standard for me, there are more amazing films out there that people refuse to watch just because they don't speak English...

How isnt anyone bothered by the fact that the house has 3 floors which represents the rich, middle class and poor, the first floor has all the things a rich place would have the middle has the things a middle class would need and its not luxurious the bottom is the place where the parasite was kept imitating the poor class.
Edit: i forgot to mention that the last bottom part of the house has stairs and have alot of steps that means its harder for the poor class to climb to get to middle social status while middle class have lesser steps and can easily climb the rich class

You think you know how the movie is gonna go and then it turns into complete chaos, this trailer won’t give you even the slightest of clues on how this movie is gonna go, if you haven’t seen it yet go now!

it's obvious from the trailer that things were going to turn dark.. you would literally have to watch the movie knowing nothing, including not knowing about Bong Joon-ho's previous work either
I just watched the movie and I got to say, I have never been so overwhelmed by a movie. I love the humour, the sudden twists, the ending was the most shocking. I recommend you to watch the movie but please don't put your expectations to high because it cannot please everyone.

i love how even the trailer is structured like the movie, the first half is very light hearted, comedic / has a witty feel to it but then that doorbell rings and things get incredibly dark, intense, anxiety inducing
This movie has the perfect casting I've seen since the dark knight trilogy.. The old housekeeper deserved more credit, she's the plot twist!

When I saw the trailer at the movies, I thought the movie looked boring and lame. Then all the hypes and awards, so I saw it. WOW....I never knew a movie can be so intensely engaging without all the explosions and mayhem. This movie just felt very different on many levels.

The melody came from one of the most popular Korean songs, called ‘Dokdo is our island’. The song is about Dokdo island in Korea describing the island and saying it belongs to Korea because Japanese governments have been arguing its ownership since the Japanese occupation of Korea. Koreans like the part and think it’s witty to use the melody which is very familiar to Koreans to describe Jessica. It’s sad that non-Koreans cannot enjoy the movie as much as Koreans do because of cultural and language differences.
Everything means something in this film. Every shot, every word spoken. It's a MASTERPIECE. So happy that South Korea is getting the recognition it deserves. THIS is how films should be made! Can't wait to see what Bong does next.

It's an Korean horror comedy with amateur actors that are constantly over acting. I'll give it 2 out of 10 stars. It's really bad, and you'll feel like the Oscars fooled you.
Can't find words to describe the originality of the screenplay. It's the second day since I watched it, and still the images are in my head. Best thing I have watched in the last five years. Pure masterpiece!
