    •Well I certainly didn’t know NS has SD75s
    •I have seen the trio of 6-axel Gensets all together, they were near the VMT in Roanoke last December
    •I saw NS 97 back in October while visiting Debutts Yard, didn’t know it was a 1 of 2!
    •A handful of SD70s and M-2s are in storage at Debutts with a mix of dash-8s and SD40-2s as well (4 storage lines total)
    And a Question: what is a Tier-4 Credit unit?
    Also an update on NRTX 381: (Surfliner F40PH) It has very recently been withdrawn from service, replaced by NRTX 122 and is currently stored at the RJC Lebanon shops. I and a few others speculate it is either:
    1. In storage due to lack of Music City Star lettering
    Or
    2. Is being prepared to be shipped off to be refurbished and repainted
    (I certainly hope it’s the former not the latter though that would be trying to prevent the inevitable)

    12:21 - from my knowledge, the SD70M-2s have not been stored permanently. They’re still marked as active because if needed, NS can pull them back out temporarily for whatever reason given, like a power shortage or increase in traffic. The same can be said for the C40-8Ws and Phase 1 and 2 SD70Ms

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  4 года назад +2

      Never said the M-2s were stored permanently, said they were in storage.. Which they are.. Dash 8s are being sold off to my knowledge and the 70s are steady-as-she-goes.. As I said at the beginning, all information came from a "summary" which was compiled by the Altoona Works and the top NS related diesel roster website.

    • @Silver_Turtle
      @Silver_Turtle 4 года назад

      I've heard a few rumblings; some confirmed, some not. According to the rumblings:
      1. They WILL be keeping their prime mover. [this one is more fact than rumor]
      2. Rumored to be upgraded to 5500hp.
      3. They will be getting the SD70ACu cab. [again, a possible rumor]

    • @blackbirdgaming8147
      @blackbirdgaming8147 4 года назад +1

      Silver Turtle Doubt there will be much in the way of real upgrades to achieve 5500 hp. EMD and Conrail worked closely to develop the model, and both knew the 20-710G3 was capable of more than just 5000 hp. 5000 hp was a conservative number. The 20-710G3 is probably capable of closer to 5700 with minimal modifications.

    • @Silver_Turtle
      @Silver_Turtle 4 года назад

      Blackbird -- You'll get no argument from me on that. When EMD came out with their ill-fated H-block, they rated it at 6000hp; it was closer to 6500hp.

    Yes I did enjoy this, one take away is NS has a LOT of old iron.....gp and sd 40's and similar. WHY did the sd60's go down the road?

    • @hakeemsd70m
      @hakeemsd70m 4 года назад

      Originally, the SD60 series was slated for the SD60E rebuild program, but not too long after 7035 was finished in 2017, NS had a change of heart. They had seen the advantages of AC traction and how much more reliable it is in certain situations than DC traction, so the road basically decided that they no longer needed to rebuild DC traction units into newer DC units since DC is inferior to AC, and soon after the start of the successful SD70 to SD7ACC rebuilds (and precision scheduled railroading), it was basically curtains for the 60 series sadly. So, NS sold off all of their ex-Conrail 60 series power and sadly most were scrapped. The ex-Conrail Dash 8-40CW's are next in line for the same retirement treatment. I hope this helps.

    Is there any other Railroad company that's modifying their engines besides NS? Does NS have the most powerful diesels in the United States right now?

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  4 года назад +2

      UP, CP, CSX and NS all have rebuilt locomotives.. Technically, UP's DDA40X is the most powerful diesel engine @ 6,600 hp.. However, they have two engines.. The SD80MAC is 5,000 hp and some SD90MACs were 6,000 hp as were some GE AC6000CWs which I believe were de-rated but you'd need to double check that.

      Good question. Norfolk Southern never owned any AC60's. CSX and UP were the only USA class 1 railroads to buy those big GE's. All units have been retired on CSX, as you basically mentioned, and UP is currently rebuilding their AC60's into AC4400CW standards, I think. I hope someone with way more knowledge on UP rebuilds can touch up on my comment. I hope this helps.

    • @Trains21

      Depending on your level of interest, this video may not be of value to you.. That's for you to decide.. However, most of my viewers are seasoned railfans and knowledgeable of locomotive designations and their differences.. That said, they've made it clear that they wan't more videos that focus on locomotives.. Take Steve Murray's comment just above yours.. With all that in perspective, I understand if you're new to all of this but that's not my fault or my problem.. I make railroad related videos and (you) the viewer decides whether or not to watch them.. When you enter an arena and choose a weapon (which you have done) you shouldn't expect gentility.. You Tube is not warm and fuzzy.. The very last video that I made before this one talks heavily about that.. You should watch it if you haven't already.. That being said, I make no qualms about the fact that some of my videos may not be beginner friendly..

  • @jim874
    @jim874 4 года назад

    Does this roster reflect foreign power that some how winds up running NS trains? I am guessing that most foreign power shown on your NS videos are un-patched units purchased ( not leased from a leasing company) by NS?
    It would be interesting to follow one unit ( and the money) as it moves from it's home railroad in to service with another line, until it's returned to it's home railroad. I doubt if that can be done, but it would be a cool video... and a lot of work.

    • @Trains21

    • @ohboy2592
      @ohboy2592 4 года назад

      Usually if foreign power is leading then that train is usually heading to that railroad. Or they could be using that power to equal out shared power. However, ns was in the hole to most foreign railroads 6 months ago

    If anybody is wondering why railroads got rid of or derated their SD45s and SD45-2s, it’s because they produce the same amount of tractive effort as SD40-2s. 4 more cylinders and more fuel consumption for almost zero advantage was a recipe for retirement.

    • @hakeemsd70m
      @hakeemsd70m 4 года назад

      Makes total sense, I've always wondered why some now ex-SD45's on CSXT's roster were redesignated as SD40-2's. I never thought of it that way. I'm just glad more of those big 645-powered diesels are still active in 2019.
