Sect: The Difference Between Day and Night Charts

- In this video I introduce the concept of sect, which is an interpretive distinction that was used in ancient astrology to distinguish between day and night charts.
I show how sect can be used to identify the most positive and negative planets in an astrological chart, in terms of where the benefics and malefics fall on a spectrum in expressing their positive or negative significations.

I have a day chart with both Jupiter (my benefic for day chart) and Mars (my more challenging and negative malefic for day) both in the 7th house in Aries (where Mars is at home) with Mars conjunct Chiron! Since learning my birth chart and studying astrology it has helped me become at peace with things about myself that seemed troublesome, such as why I have such a hard time with relationships. I understand that the Sun determines whether you have a day or night chart. Does the placement of the Moon have any bearing on the interpretation of the sects?
Also it would be great to see more videos and workshops on various remedies for the strained energy from different planets in the charts. E.g. if in a night chart Saturn is in Leo and part of a T-square (opposite Sun (in mutual reception 4° orb), and □ Uranus (2°orb), □ Jupiter (9°orb)), does it makes Saturn even more non-cooperative, right? And would it make Saturn and Uranus transits especially influencing or not? I am trying to understand the principal of the sect theory.

Great video. Slightly confused, we just look at our chart to determine if a day or night chart- not just the time of birth? I.e. I was born at 8:30 pm, the sun was down- it’s a night chart no, vs during the sunlight hours?
The malefics in the first chart should be reversed, no? That, or the second chart is backwards. . . 🤔
I just watched the video myself and was confused too. It sounded like Chris said (around 3:00) for the diurnal chart, Saturn is the powerful malefic planet and Mars is the powerful malefic planet for nocturnal charts? But then the chart has the malefic planets switched so I'm a little bit confused. I'll probably go watch his more recent and thorough podcast on the Daytime/Nighttime Sect for clarification. Maybe I missed something.

@@ksouth3642 I actually figured it out y'all! So because Saturn is the in-sect malefic for the day chart, that means when it's night, it can't function as well because it's normal functioning is delayed. Mars in the day time is going to be more challenging for a native because Mars is more comfortable in a night chart. It's a part of the night-time sect. Out of sect malefic planets affect you in a more negative way than in-sect malefic planets. I hope that helps!
My sun is at 1° Capricorn in my 1st house. I was born at 8:39 am and my sun is below my ascendant line. I'm looking at my chart in whole houses.
Just checked sidereal and my Sun goes into the 12th, putting it above my ascendant! Awesome! So Saturn in my second house is a good thing then?
Hello! I know this video was made a while ago, but what's your advice on determining sect when the native was born at the time of sunrise or sunset? I was born within 1 minute of sunset, and depending on which chart style I use, the sun can show up either above or below the descendant line.
If it was within 1 minute of sunset then it probably still behaves like a day chart, although I would test it out to see if that is indeed true.
I believe this is called a "Twilight Chart"!
Hi, interesting topic. When I was starting astrology I understood this concept to be atributed to a birth before noon and a birth after noon. I believe it was from a couple of pre 20th century books one specifically being by SImmonite. The pre nooon birth being assigned a day chart and after noon being assigned an evening chart. This made determining a day or night chart quite easy - it could be just a shorthand. I find many of them in my research of astrology over the centuries.
An interesting wrinkle to this interpretation is that for a birth before noon you use the date previous to the current date of birth to erect the chart. If someone was born on the 10th at 8:00 in the morning the chart would be erected for the 20th. If they were born at say 2:00pm you would use the current date. I never really followed this approach so I can't speak to it's accuracy and strength but I htought I would add it as trivia.

What if Satrun is Retrograde in ones Night Chart?
I'm a bit confused - first off mars is the malefic to the moon team and then its saturn in the other half of the video?
My Saturn in the morning gives me more values education but My Jupiter is more on accurate and functional than of my Rising sign, I think all this time, I rely on my Saturn and Jupiter but sometimes, this is bad when Mars is uncontrollable, completely ruins my patience sooner as I feel being “collared". Now, I hang on tight and run back to my Saturn and/or Jupiter.
I think one of my problems in understanding is because MY chart is rather confusing: I have a nocturnal chart with all of the traditional planets in houses 3-6 except the Moon in the 11th in Scorpio conjunct the South Node (and Neptune). My Sun is in the 4th conjunct Mars in Aries. So what is my "strongest luminary" to determine my Master of Nativity? For a nocturnal chart should it ALWAYS be the moon, even if the Moon is the one planet NOT in the bottom half of the chart? The Sun seems to be strongest because it is so strongly aspected, conjunct Mars and in Aries, so would it be the Sun despite having a nocturnal chart? I feel like I have to get this right before moving on!
I have a 0 degree sun 🌞 sitting on the DC in the cusp of the 7th house. Am I a day chart ? 🧐
(Also very interesting facts: Saturn rules my chart, I am cap rising. Jupiter is with 29 degrees my Atmakarka)
If yes, then Mars is my malefic and rules in the 4th and 11th house. Benefic is then Jupiter rules over my 12th house.

It seems to only be based on the Sun’s position.
Depending on the house system, my Sun position changes. I do like both equal & whole systems, and not sure how to figure this one out.

Im a little confused. So I have a day chart but saturn is in the lower half. So is it contrary to sect since its the the night part of my chart or is it of the sect since my chart is overall a diurnal chart?
No, if you have a day chart then Saturn is of the sect in favor, period. What side of the horizon Saturn on is an additional modifying factor, but it does not change its basic sect status.
I am a night chart in placidus but day chart in whole house… the house systems drive me crazy!
What happens if Jupiter and Saturn is in the same house (6th) in a day chart?
Ok, I'm a little confused. I was born during the day - sun is in either 8th/9th house, depending on who does it (1 degree Virgo). Mars is in my 12th house (Scorpio); Saturn in my 10th (Libra); Venus in the 9th (Virgo); Jupiter in the 5th (Taurus); Mercury in the 8th (Leo). So does that mean I have a night time benefic in my daytime sect; but Jupiter is in the night time sect? And both malefic planets are in my day time chart? And Mercury is also in day time sect. So am I screwed as to the most useful benefic planet?
You have a day chart, so the most positive planet is automatically Jupiter, and the most challenging planet is Mars. It is really that simple, for the most part.

Its looks different in plasidus vs whole sign.
My sun is above my ascendent. But in the whole sign it's not above the line. Because It's in the same 1st house.

What are some ways to influence the negative out of sect planets??
Interesting! Thank you for the video. Am I right to understand that it is more like 1-2 extra positive or negative points to the overall influence of the planets in the charts? And wonder what out of sign / house / day-night position and degree, as well as aspects are stronger in giving properties to the planets, or it is more of an total score, so-to-speak?
So, in a day chart mars is the grater malefic and in a night chart it's saturn? And in a day chart jupiter is the greater benefic and in a night chart it's venus? Is that it? Is that all? I feel like I'm missing something.
And if I understand it correctly the Sun (or that aspect of our personality )will be more strong in a day chart, and the Moon placement will be more strong or prominent in a night chart.

Wait what? I thought the planets move counter clockwise thru the chart and the bottom half is considered the "top" (hence the numbers starting at the ASC and moving that way)... Now I'm so confused.
Yeah, the planets move counter-clockwise, in the same direction that the houses are ordered from the Ascendant. The top half of the chart is usually houses on the side with the midheaven, while the bottom is usually used to refer to the half of the chart below the horizon by the IC.
if i am interpreting this correctly, if the person has a sun in the 1st house, directly on the ASC point then it is considered a day chart?
but the 1st house is bellow asc and the sun is in the first house so technically it should be a night chart?
Yes, once the sun gets close to the Ascendant it starts getting really bright out, and for all intents and purposes it becomes a day chart.

What if Saturn is in a day house in a night chart? My Libra sun is in the 6th house so I have a night chart. But my Saturn is in my 11th house in Aquarius. What does this mean?
Well for one, Saturn is in Domicile. My understanding is Saturn would be more of a malefic influence than your Mars placement would be. It would be more challenging and troublesome than your Mars placement. Does this seem true for you?

You say that maleficients are more negative in a natal chart placement that does NOT match their natural "team" placement. But then you say, "For instance, when Saturn is in a day chart, it is typically more constructive...." That sounds like a contradiction....am I missing something?
Saturn is a diurnal planet, so it is more constructive in day charts, and more destructive in night charts. Mars is a nocturnal planet, so it is more constructive in night charts, and more destructive in day charts.
