My advice is to test them. This video does give an impression, but trust me, live the HD-28v is far superior. You just know it when you play it. It is in the way it makes you feel. How it vibrates. And the sound is just very balanced. Simply cleaner and fuller bass. Think it is louder to. All reviews from the guys who are lucky enough to own lots of Martins also confirms it. They all love the vintage 28 model. I get my HD-28v on Monday. Christmas came early this year. Just say YO!
I love the comparison videos! But even more than that, I love the ending. Such a wonderful wish for all. I think the positive outlook makes you radiate joy! Thanks.
Interesting. Both sound great but the D-28 comes across clearer which probably translates to it being better in a recording situation. You don't want a lot of booming bass when you record. Great video as always Jarvis.
I played both and with no hesitation the hd28v is more beautiful and more comfortable to play. I was amazed by the low E and how beautiful it sounds. Really deep sound.
I've owned a half of a dozen guitars or so, including Guild, Martin D-18, and Taylor 420, but never satisfied for long. Then about 4 years ago I went out looking for my "lifetime guitar." I picked out the 2 I thought sounded the best, did just what you did in this video, trading them back and forth. Finally I put the D-28 back up on the rack and took the HD28-V home and have never looked back. Besides playing very well, you really demonstrated the difference in this video. Nice job!
I played both of these today. They are both excellent. HD-28V is very dynamic and louder, very responsive, but the D-28 has a tight dry punchy sound that might record better. One is not better than the other it's just a matter of what you prefer, can't go wrong with either one.
Thanks for your reply! I must say after about half a year the problem is less prominent. Currently experimenting with saddle height and compensated instead of uncompensated.
Thanks for these great demos. It inspired me to check out an d28 hd28 and hd28v which I subsequently bought. These guitars are marvelous and the 28v. Just cons alive in your hands. I like it better and I think it has more top end than my Taylor's. love to see an 814 0r 810 vs the d28 hd28/v. Again Jarvis great videos hope to we more. Ad bro its awesome how happy you look strumming away. That's what it's all about. Best
Is the second song a John Mayer tune? Also, i've been looking in to the HD and OM 28V guitars lately. There's no real chance for me to be able to play either of them where I live. So I was wondering if you had an opinion on which body size would be better if i wanted to play louder up high and still maintain clarity and separation if i'm playing open strings too. Kind of like Glen Hansard's Say it to me now. Thanks for the great reviews Jarvis, and cheers from Alaska
If I may respond to your question. I happen to own the Martin HD-28V and a Martin OM-21. Two very beautiful sounding guitars; however, it's always best to play an instrument before purchase. Each and every guitar has its own sound and personality. I'm sorry to hear that you live in an area where there is "...no chance...to be able to play either..." guitar. The difference between the Dreadnought and the Orchestra Model is fairly significant. The dreadnought delivers a lot of bass. The OM, on the other hand, has a lighter, cleaner sound. I think it has more articulation. Both instruments deliver marvelous volume even though the dreadnought is the larger guitar. Though I use the OM model primarily for chord melody, still, the HD-28V also delivers a lovely sound when played finger style. I hope that I've been of some help to you.
I found the HD-28v sounded the best by far in first position 'cowboy' chords, but was muddy further up the neck. While the D-28 was pretty thin in cowboy chords positions, but more open and fresher sounding up the neck.
Hi I really like your videos. I really wonder that saddle makes different sounds.. Could you show difference b/t FMI and bone on a same guitar(I love to see on D28)? it'll be easier to compare. Also I see some FWI.. what's different in sound?
Fabulous playing! Love your reviews. I have a 2008` Martin D12-28 that I like so much that I would like to purchase the 6-string version for my B-day this August. My main 6-sting is a 2010`Gibson Sheryl Crow C.W. and my second is a Epi Masterbuilt DR500mce. Rock`On! From Sioux City,Ia.
Hi Jarvis, I recently bought a great HD28-V, thanks for the demo videos! After a while I noticed that there are some dead notes on it. A string 8th fret, low E 12th and 13th fret. Tone dies very fast. Do you if these wolf tones can be cured somehow? Otherwise the guitar sounds great. Could changing a saddle help?
Great Demo! Lovely Guitars. I think the D28 sounds a bit more naseley (not a bad thing). And the HD-28v sounds better with open chords especially. I personally prefer the V neck and vintage appointments of the HD28v, but the D28 is a classic that should be in every martin fan's collection.
to me the difference worth more than $800, i own a 1980 D28. The low tone is sheit compare to HD35 even HD28. However people say D28 is classic, Yes I was the dumb one who followed the stream and got something not what I expect. Here's the tip, never buy before you played em.
O.K. I see most every one here say HD28V...As I agree I also dont hear a 1000.00 difference with that I would purchase a used (matured) D28 a be perfectly happy..Thanks for another great review Jarvis..
The D28 cuts and rings and is complimentary to a guitar with deeper bass like the HD 28V. if you like the "heavier" bottom of the HD, you can also explore OOO sized guitars made with Cedar tops. Slightly smaller body with the warmth you want.
I have upgraded so many guitars with FMI over the years,...did you notice that even Martin uses FMI for their Marquires series and everyone that plays it says it has a nice sweet yet aged tone. Mcpherson did one expensive 4 seasons guitars with FMI upgrades on the Nut and Saddle- Walrus is too much of everything thats why i dont use them plus the 1khz midrange is too much and irritation to the ears..
As A 8th fret and E 13th fret are the same tone (F) in standard tuning, you should check all the other Fs if they're dead too. For some reason the resonance frequency of your guitar is the same as for F. And honestly, this should NOT be the case with regard to the quality level martin is claiming (and you are paying for). Changing the saddle (other material) might help but presumably only extensive measures such as revising the bracing will remedy the dead notes.
Hey, if you have to buy only one guitar,to play in the studio, strumming, fingerstyle, solo, a guitar with the amazing sound (for multiple styles). I Have a taylor 314ce, but I wanted a guitar even better, the body vibrate more, but not exaggerated ... I unfortunately live in Brazil, where I dont have the possibility to test, could you pass me some best-known models for search? I have no more than $ 2,500, the guitars can be USED, so the guitars would be a bit cheaper ... Really Thank you
Every guitar is different, and 28´s come in all ways, but I had a D28 that the store that took it thought was great, still it did not even come close to my HD28v, with it you hear every note perfectly, the bass is amazing, the D28 is kinda midrangy and with very little bass for such a big guitar, it feels like the top is muted a bit, like it is too stiff, there is no comparison, unless the hdv is a dud and we're talking about a vintage D28, which is a different animal altogether; I might own a very special HD28v, but the only non-vintage guitar I thought sounded better than mine was a marquis
Both guitars sound fantastic but the hd28v has more clarity a more shiny sound where as the d28 has a slightly duller base but having said that the d28 will be £800 cheaper and will never let you down! So if you have a budget d28 but if you have the extra hd28v is the one
If the D-28 has light gauge strings and low action, which I suspect the one in the video has, it will be at a disadvantage against the boomy and punchy HD-28. The D-28 looses much of its projection and punch when setup with light gauge strings and low action. I know because I setup my D-28 like that when I got it. It is fine for gentle and fingerstyle playing, but lost the Martin D-28 PUNCH. Put on mediums and get the action back up or at least near Martin action height specs and the D-28 will not sound as wimpy as it does in this video.
Even worse than simply light gauge strings are the coated strings that I believe Martin (unfortunately) puts on all the guitars they ship to the stores. Sad!
HI man ,,im testing right now the HD28V ...Marquis and the HD 16 Rlsh ,,,,the 16 is a cannon w the big hole ,,and a collector ,,they are about the same in quality and tone ,,,you must try them both because really each and every guitar may have more or less bass as the wood grain is diffrent on every guitar even if the same model # ,,i tried 3 hd28 and they all sounded a bit difrent ..cheers ,,,
to me the difference worth more than $800, i own a 1980 D28. The low tone is sheit compare to HD35 even HD28. However people say D28 is classic, Yes I was the dumb one who followed the stream and got something not what I expect. Here's the tip, never buy before you played em.

The BIG ONE i've been waiting for !
Great review/demo - thank you very much !!!
HD28 has my vote! Fuller sound and really projects the sound well!
Interesting. Both sound great but the D-28 comes across clearer which probably translates to it being better in a recording situation. You don't want a lot of booming bass when you record. Great video as always Jarvis.
@@hughjarse9848Please tell me you kept that 18
Great review! I am about to buy a HD28V and was looking at the D28 as well. HD has so much more sound. Definitely the one I am going with. Thanks!
I played both and with no hesitation the hd28v is more beautiful and more comfortable to play. I was amazed by the low E and how beautiful it sounds. Really deep sound.
The V will have an open sound Low air that is deep .. Real depth which is unbelievable

Lovely demo - you look like you just feel a bit happier every time you start playing! HD28v for me, amazing, thanks.
I vote for the HD28V, but you make both of them sound wonderful!RickTucson

Hi, Jarvis. I love your video very much! And thanks for your effort! BTW, how would you compare the D28 with the D35? Which one you like more?
Thanks for these great demos. It inspired me to check out an d28 hd28 and hd28v which I subsequently bought. These guitars are marvelous and the 28v. Just cons alive in your hands. I prefer the D28....that is why Martin still produces more D28 than any model to date
Hi I really like your videos. I really wonder that saddle makes different sounds..

I think the HD had just a little more volume but the tone is too difficult to decide between the two, great great job Jarvis,Thanks
Thanks for tuning in my friend
Hi Javis, your FMI saddle sounds truly amazing. I live in England. Is there any way that I can get a FMI saddle from here for my HD-28V? :)
What gauge strings are on the HD-28V? Type/Brand? Thanks!
Thanks ...I just try my best and do whatever comparison as i go along
I played both of these today, as well as the HD28. I liked the HD28V best. The tone was clearer and punchier to me.

What´s the name of the tune you start playing at minute 6:43? sweet man! i like it!
Thank you for this comparison video. I just purchased a hd28v. I play bluegrass and I'm wondering if I should have bought the standard hd 28
No you made the right choice with the V.
O.K. I see most every one here say HD28V...As I agree I also dont hear a 1000.00 difference with that I would purchase a used (matured) D28 a be perfectly happy..Thanks for another great review Jarvis..
Tried both when i got my D28. If you can afford it, go for the HDV, else take the D28, is a GREAT guitar.
Love watching you play!
The D28 cuts and rings and is complimentary to a guitar with deeper bass like the HD 28V.
if you like the "heavier" bottom of the HD, you can also explore OOO sized guitars made with Cedar tops. Slightly smaller body with the warmth you want.
Is possible a comparison between the HD28 and HD16R? cheers
Very,very good review,thank you Jarvis !!!
I like the HD28V.
Hey, Jarvis, just out of curiosity, what are these compilations you play when doing your reviews?
Check out my tutorial on my channel o showed them and I have 4 of them
The Guitar Spa Singapore
Cool. Thanks!
I thought the d28 had a clearer more balanced tone
Thanks man...live with passion and play your guitar...ride the wave upwards
I liked this! It's hard to seperate the two, both great guitars!
i think the hd-28.but they both sound great.
thanks again jarvis!
In your opinion ...which neck do you like better?
I could play both of them
both are great you try them and decide which one you like
What chords are you using?
You might want to order a blank and get someone to do up a saddle for your there..
HD28. I dont like the yellow top as much but sound WAY better for my taste. Thanks Jarvis
Well Phil...I'm on High..when I play any great sounding ones..I'm always happy and always laughing...keep smiling...life is funny...cheers jarvis
The City Music guys are just great
I got the HD 28. Love it man. So dark and beautiful. But I got crazy ocd about its slight dings and scratches which I know I shouldn't have.
i remember the h28v being very comfortable to play

D35 will have more bass....but I honestly would like to have both...if one then the D28...cos its the martin flagship bestseller
Hey, if you have to buy only one guitar,to play in the studio, strumming, fingerstyle, solo, a guitar with the amazing sound (for multiple styles).

HD28 has noticably more punch right from the start of the strum, it's clearer, sweeter, i hope D28 will mature into that over time

I wanna play like that!
Jarvis does not really tell which guitar he likes when he do a comparison and there's a reason behind that, he wants to keep his job of course.
come on..bro ...i leave it to you to decide which is better
tnks man!
Thanks!
jarvis, since you introduce me ms TROM goodall I can still hear her screaming I am now looking stateside for this girlfriend love n peace
Impressionnant,grettings from switzerland
HD28V for the win.
I prefer the Bourg...
it seems that HD28V brings more clarity
By the way, both guitars rule, but the HD28V beats the D28 all the way.
HI man ,,im testing right now the HD28V ...Marquis and the HD 16 Rlsh ,,,,the 16 is a cannon w the big hole ,,and a collector ,,they are about the same in quality and tone ,,,you must try them both because really each and every guitar may have more or less bass as the wood grain is diffrent on every guitar even if the same model # ,,i tried 3 hd28 and they all sounded a bit difrent ..cheers ,,,
I hear a difference. Just don't know if I hear $800 more of a difference.

The HD guitar has more depth. Richer tone.
D28 best 4 me
I prefer HD's richer tone
I think HD-28V sounds better than D-28
