My ex was a costume designer for marvel and she explained why they all use that fabric. It’s like very technical but mostly comes down to “looks good on camera” “doesn’t suck to wear”

Yeah, it's more a kind of a plastic fabric, right? Sintetic? Not really made of a fabric. It can seems like metallic or like fabric. It's maybe more generally useable.
Only parts like the cape is more made of a real fabric.

EXACTLY! I think Nando is kind of crazy saying that the Christopher Reeves and other similar suits are amongst the best. They just read as dopey to me. I know this is a fictional world but try to imagine if firefighters and EMTs were dressed as clowns. It almost feels disrespectful to how serious their jobs are, ya know? Most of the stuff is practical, either to keep them safe or to allow access to items they need on site. I think that makes a lot of sense for hero costumes too. Sure, they can be silly and themed. But, idk. I also feel like i need to believe the could actually be clothes, ya know?

James Gunn has said this film is about Superman dealing with the balance of his Kryptonian and Earth heritage. I feel the suit is his "Kryptonian" suit. But by the end of the film, he'll get something closer to the edit as he realizes he's both Human and Kryptonian. Keeps the colors, but softens out the suit to match humanity. Changing the S. I think this suit is OK, it doesn't feel iconic, though.

Clark is then eating outside on the porch, by this time the sun is setting and all you can see is his silhouette and the house’s as the reddish-orange hue colours the maize field. I agree that this suit could’ve been made on Krypton maybe as a military uniform and that could explain the collar and more authoritarian look. Then either at the end of this movie or in a different movie later down the line he wears a more traditional suit that pays homage to this suit while also combining it with a more friendly, simplistic look that’s more welcoming to the people of Earth. He combines his Kryptonian heritage with what he’s learned about humanity while being raised on Earth. Then maybe Supergirl goes through a similar costume transformation after she sees how her cousin adopts the customs and traditions of Earth and how humanity accepts them as heroes. I think it fits nicely with the idea of legacy that this movie’s going for and would be a good visual representation of the journey Superman might go on in the film.

This movie is going to be a very introspective one, not just on the nature of the superhero but for Clark himself. Who he is, who he wants to be, how he sees himself and his own existence, what he wants the new wave of heroes in his wake to look like.
So it seems given that Gunn is going to have his exploratory innerward character arc be the main focus even moreso than his other work, and once he reaches his conclusion by the end of the film (even if not a conclusive or permanent one) it seems very likely he's going to switch to something much more simple.

It’s not an ideal costume for sure, I think the texture lines are a bit unnecessary, but I’ve always been a rare Superman collar truther. I don’t know what it is in particular, I wasn’t a huge fan of New 52 Superman overall, and ironically even in a lot of his stories they forget the collar, depending on the artist. But I’ve always liked it. It’s definitely part of the desire to do something different with the costume, a change that feels very significant to make it clear that this is a new universe and a new version of the character. Maybe that’s why I think it works here, too, to contrast with Cavil. But I do like the way it makes the suit feel more snug and more like a costume, since I tend to see the existence of the costume as a very deliberate choice by Clark to let people see that he’s there to help. It works less in the New 52 where Batman was on the scene before Clark was, but I think it could work here. But that’s just my two cents, I know I’m in the minority by a lot here

Not just the costume but the tone of the photo itself is strangely off putting to me. Say what you will about the Fantastic Four cast but at least that Valentine's Day announcement photo (which was also sort of a costume reveal) actually seemed to match the expected tone of the movie or its setting or characters. The tone of this Superman picture though just seems so conflicting with everything we had been hearing. Normally there'd be nothing wrong with that, but in this case it invites obvious comparisons to Snyder's take on the character's first outing.

I’ve heard a lot of people comment that they’re surprised his suits isn’t brighter. I think that this is a very interesting image. While his suit is primarily darkened by shadows and some obvious battle-wear, there are very obvious hints towards the image so many of us have in our minds.
The colors behind Kal paint the sky with shades of purple and green. Commonly associated with villains across comic book lines, these secondary colors are also closely aligned with Green Lanterns (confirmed to be in the movie) and Lex Luther (ditto)
Meanwhile, our hero is getting dressed for work as any other person on this planet might on any given day. He’s got clear signs of many hours logged, this suit is far from fresh off the rack.
Yet… as he slips on his red boots, the scarlet shows brightly with just a glimpse of the cheerful & friendly blue of his suit-leg. A sign of his underlying purity and the hop he brings those who see his colors blur across the sky

Yea I feel like Judianna Makovsky's superhero costume designs are often hit or miss, the hits often due to being a nearly identical adaptation of a suit from the comic, whereas the misses often when doing a more loose adaptation as she tends to add lots of extra lines and panels... Looks like she veered towards the latter on this one.

It looks to me that the picture is taken at a point in Superman's day when he's been through ordeal after ordeal trying to keep Metropolis safe, flying through burning buildings, stopping muggings, saving kittens, battling androids and what not, and he's just returned home, suit covered in the debris, ready to kick the boots off... and now Solaris has come down from the sky, blasting the city. And already, it's time to suck it up, put the boots back on and fly back out there. I think the film may be humanising the responsibility Superman has, in a way that's very much akin to characters like Spider-Man. This picture, to me, indicates that the film will be, at least in part, about Superman coming to terms with the immense responsibility on his shoulders and adjusting to the many demands on his time, which I think makes sense, given that the film is very much about Superman in his early days, grappling with his Kryptonian legacy, reconciling it with his place on Earth and discovering what it means to be Superman.

Not to nitpick, but if I had a complaint, it'd be the fabric bunching up in the shoulder makes it seem like it doesn't fits him quite right, and the cuffs look rather thick, almost like armored paneling, or light gauntlets. But in all honesty, I'll just wait to see it in action.

I think the collar and the boots can have another non authoritarian meaning, Superman is putting on his boots even in a time of peril in this photo, and I think the collar and him putting on his boots even in distress can give him the interpretation of being a symbol of a working man, no matter how bleak the situation is, Superman is still suiting up to fight

One thing is certain, they better get the story on point or this movie will sink like an anchor.

I'll gladly defend the lined/textured suits as opposed to a leotard look. I don't want my superheroes looking like they hit up Spirit Halloween as they're only costuming source. It looks cheap. Don't get me wrong- a suit can be cheap and look fantastic, but if you're going to save the world, spend more than $30 on the suit, please. A leotard or even spandex should also be very fragile to the sort of paces it would be put through in a fight. The simple Superman suit that his mom made for him should be torn to shreds if he gets put through a wall or gets shot up. Superman is bulletproof; spandex is not. Textured suits at least look like armor that can take a hit.

I don’t hate this costume but I definitely think that Super Man is one of the few characters that only really makes sense to be in skin tight spandex. It’s pretty much Sups, The Flash, Spider-Man and the Fantastic 4 that should keep it skin tight. Honestly the thinner Super Man’s suit is the more clearly his invulnerability reads.

I kinda wanted Superman’s costume to be made by Ma Kent, to really drive home that Superman doesn’t need extravagant clothing, or fancy padding… just the hand-stitched love of his mother. It would have served as a testament to the lovable wholesome farm boy that Superman’s always been. At least they embraced the red shorts.
I’ve also never been a fan of the New 52 Superman costume. It (like the overworked hyper-detailed MCU costumes) suffers from excessive line-work, and the collar almost militarizes the costume. That’s why the collar works for Injustice Superman, or Soviet Superman. Having no collar, the campy red undies, the bold logo, and the simple fabrics is what helps make Superman so endearing just to look at.
It adds a layer of (physical) humility to one of the most humble and wholesome superheroes. Going for excessive line-work detail, and giving it the look of being thick/padded was a very unfortunate choice that they made. Oh well. I just hope it looks better when we see more of it later on.

I would love for this to be his Kryptonian suit and then near the end it gets damaged and Maby Ma and Pa Kent give him the more regular version with the S.Idk for a Kryptonian battle suit the padding makes it look more like a level one sparring suit which could be the case as Jor-el would still see Clark as his son and not ready.

While I am not a huge fan of the suit design, I don't think it's a bad suit. I like how it still looks like a Superman suit and the colors fit with the suit.
IF I could put on my Nando Rewrite helmet, I would have this be the suit Clark wears at the the beginning of the movie. Since James Gunn has confirmed that superheroes have already been around in this universe with Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and Mr. Terrific being in the movie, what Clark does is take influence from these other heroes and make his suit more uniform-based. It shows that he sees being a superhero as the equivalent to being a solider. He has his heart in the right place, but doesn't fully grasp the idea of being a superhero. What could also be the case, as Nando said, that the suit is Kryptonian and could be a sort of military design. This could also be part of Clark's character arc of trying to honor both is Earth and Kryptian heritage. He doesn't really know how to honor them both, or feel ashamed of being an alien on Earth. Then towards the end of the movie, when he is fulfilling his arc, Clark modifies the costume to make it more simple and less like a uniform. He could even modify the emblem to look more like the traditional one as way to honor his birth home of Krypton and his upbringing on Earth; being the bridge of two worlds, a symbol of a better future.

What if the costume was made by Maxwell Lord, who gives all of the other heroes (GL, Metamorpho, etc.) their costumes. This one could be based on one that Martha made for him in his first years as Superman. The new suit could be meta for modern MCU style suits that Clark rejects in the end of the film for his original.

Maybe I’m in the minority on this but I think it looks kind of perfect? Like it’s a perfect fusion of his more modern looks like the Snyderverse and New 52 versions with the more traditional aspects from the classic comics and Reeves movies. The boots are great. Trunks are a win. Hair looks good. I like the collar, tbh. If this IS like the suit he gets from maybe his dad, then it makes sense it would be slightly more formal with the collar since it’s Kryptonian. But the highest praise I can say is that when I first saw this image out of context, I thought it was just REALLY good fan art, and to me that is a good sign for any adaptation.

People aren't getting the bigger picture. He got this suit from Krypton, so it looks futuristic and bulky and has an alien symbol. This Supe will definitely get a suit made by Ma Kent in like the third act. A simple, more traditional, one with a very clearly S symbol. He may be a Kryptonian, but he's his mom's son first.

I like that it looks loose. Imagine tying your shoes, ur shirt gets a little baggy. Gives this the feel that these are real clothes. Cavill's looked painted on and I could never imagine him being able to actual put it on like clothes.
Also, for the bit about the texture and the lines, idk sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I think here it's pretty minimal compared to some suits we've gotten and I vastly prefer texturing to just like a unitard or something ya know? Like that would look silly (looking at u Reeve suit). I'd say this has a good blend of stuff going on. It's clearly battle damaged and he's hunched over so the light isn't hitting it right. He's not standing, fist in the air, taking off for the sky.
Really I think a lot of the hate here is just ppl as always looking for something to whine about. If that's ur deal, leave the rest of us out of it and go whine in the corner is all I'm saying.
