This new Kigdom Come is meta. It's DC reflecting on its DCEU, on its branched fanbase, on the way people in general feel about kindness, justice, violence, and heroism. It's an onscreen and offscreen conversation at the same time, and that's truly meaningful. I couldn't be more excited for Superman.

Well that was a parody of the anti-heroes in comics at the time. Like Punisher and Cable. You still have that now, too. So, to go full circle on the optimist angle, I think it'd be cool if there was Magog and the others in that film to contrast the old heroes.
I don't agree. Social media's not the cause of this; the foundations were laid decades ago by Generation X and just took their sweet time coming to fruition. Gen X were probably the worst parenting generation and Millennials aren't much better. Time will tell what Gen Z is like.
It's Kingdom Come meets The New Frontier is what he's taking (he's posted about both). There also very similar stories(New Frontier, will probably be a modern version of it)
Indeed. The two stories are arguably the top two greatest in DC, and they share a lot of core similarities. They’re both stories about the entire DC Universe which tackle its rich history and related it to the present in a meta sense. The idealist heroism of the past is crushed in the present, but then returns to bring a new future. They’re stories about changing the world for the better by remembering the past and improving upon it instead of losing it.
I have been saying for a while that a reverse Kingdom Come storyline would be the best way to really showcase why Superman is special, I truly hope this is the route Gunn is taking this universe.
Superman 2011 in the comics was inspired by/Idolizing Iron Munro, Clark was reading comics about Iron Munro as a kid. Iron Munro was a member of an old team much like JSA called "All Star Squadron", it had members from the JSA like Star-Spangled Kid, Doctor Fate, Wildcat, Original Sandman, Hawkman, Jay Garrick, Commander Steel, The Atom, Original Mister Terrific and Doctor Mid-Nite. My point is that it's almost like Superman was already idolizing a character Related to the JSA👀
It's been a long time coming but I cannot wait for the DCU to begin. Gunn could not have described what the universe will look like any better. And thinking the very same as your theories Boba, well said bro
My personal idea is characters like The Authority function like the The Seven in The Boys. The Authority is basically owned by major companies, (maybe Lexcorp?) and superheroing is a lot of antiheroes and morally grey metahumans. But "freelance" superheroes, like Superman, are an existential threat to their existence, because they point out that heroes should be about hope and saving lives. Hence why one of the characters in Superman is The Engineer, as a gateway into that theme.
The Boys being a popular and beloved show is proof the world needs Superman to return and remind us what it means to be a hero and to be good. While it has some quality to it, watching The Boys constantly (whether intentionally or not) teach this of message of cynicism and compromised morals truly is a drag. Superman isn’t outdated, we just need saving.
He never was. I love The Boys but I also love comic books too. Superman and Spider-Man would restore faith in people like Butcher and others who hate supes
I and a lot of people definitely had similar theories around the same time. For me it’s less “reverse” but more like an Early Kingdom Come. I’ve left comments here before that you saw (like that one about the other heroes being JSA legacies) but yeah, Clark being inspired by the idealistic heroes of the past and bringing that heroism back for a better future will be the core of the story, but instead of him being part of that past generation and the story having him at the end of his career, it’s early on. I’m still hoping for a 5 year long career at this point, and considering the N52 influence on the suit that fits because the present day N52 stories started 5 years into his career.
Gunn has mentioned SEVERAL times that everything is connected. My Adventures with Superman is setting up the movie. He has said several times that superman will be superman in the DCU.
"Reverse Kingdom Come" is an awesome concept, man! Allow me to ask, what are your thoughts on The New Frontier? I believe Gunn is actually following the roadmap of The New Frontier, a great mirror to Kingdom Come. The DCU is building towards the rise of contemporary heroes, moving on from DC's old-school ways. Literally and thematically. The JSA and Suicide Squad are not frontline fighters anymore; the dark & gritty DCEU is not cool anymore. Out with the old, in with the new. I just read DC: The New Frontier. The first couple chapters follow this concept. The JSA are forced into retirement while Superman & WW are forced to step up. It's the passing of the mantle from JSA to JLA. Superman is forced to create his legacy. I should add, one of the early chapters of the book is actually titled "Gods & Monsters". The New Frontier is actually a perfect set up for Kingdom Come. I hope in 10-12 years we see a Kingdom Come adaptation in which Kal El comes out of retirement to overthrow & re-inspire his legacy.
To piggy back off your point about Lex backing the more extreme heroes, I honestly think that Lex is going to "create" The Engineer, or at least, he'll be the one to transplant her blood with machines. That would work really well, especially considering it seems she's out to get Supes, at first (based on the fact that we know she was filming at the Fortress of Solitude location, along with David and very few others).
Kingdom Come really illustrates why I didn’t like Snyder’s take on Superman. Batman can be gritty and Wonder Woman can be arrogant and the Flash can be a bit of a goof, but Superman has to be the utterly trustworthy Big Blue Boy Scout.
I don't know if I'm the viewer you are talking about that said they think Clark was probably inspired by heroes of old ie the JSA etc But I also think the AUTHORITY will be the most popular hero group when we enter this world the premiere group this world's SE7EN if you will. And I think this newbie Superman will be one of the founders of the justice LEAGUE then end up rivaling and eventually coming to blows with and overtaking the authority
This “Reverse Kingdom Come” theory sounds like Superman inspiring Batman to do better in BvS. Or Superman using theatricality to defeat he the elite while teaching them a better way.
To be honest I love the new Superman suit I really don't understand people who are like it looks ugly it looks to big or fat they don't like the neck the collar is great because it doesn't have that high turtleneck collar from new 52 i did not like that but it does have a smaller better looking collar the the boots are perfect they look like the boots from Superman the animated series the trunks are back the pants look perfect as well and I like the way they made the new 52 costume sleeves the cape looks good too I like the lining in the suit especially around the crest on the shoulders near the cape I think it's so different from any other Superman suit we have seen in live acton action and different doesn't mean bad changes are good the suit is definitely not what I expected but it's a 10 out of 10
Why haven't you discussed about the my adventures with superman show and how for the first time in history, they tweaked superman origins, made it more interesting and how it could be cool if James gunn did so too with superman, that's if dc fans don't come with their backlash as usual 😂😂

Hey boba, have you considered that the movie may also take influence from Superman vs The Elite and Superman/Batman: Public enemies as well as Kingdom Come? For example maybe Lex Luthor runs for President and enlists a team of superheroes that hold the more extreme values of the elite or Magog from kingdom come, and that it is Superman’s role to show the world they are wrong. Thanks for the great work!
I think it would be cool if the Reverse Kingdom come would honestly be a major plot point throughput the whole of Chapter 1. We could see some heroes like Mr Terrific or Metamorpho who may or may not have done some questionable things. But then the idea could be leaned into more hard-core in Rated R projects like peacemaker season 2. Like The Boys' style. Imagen seeing peacemaker having to beat the shit out of a coked up Midnighter (I know random character, but that's what James Gunn does best).
Hear me out, Lex gives a 'random guy' Superman-like power, ala Vought, and people love him, because he "gets things done" But with time he becomes something like Homelander (maybe a little less fu**ed-up), and the rest is just a recreation of 'Superman vs The Elite'

Well does feel like a reset since events of Justice League appearing in the finale of Peacemaker is excluded. It's almost like a doppelganger universe starting from season 2 of Peacemaker and moving forward. The Authority maybe will serve as the new age of heroes kind of serving as the live action version of The Elite who take Justice to the extreme which won't sit well with Superman the other veteran Heroes which could lead to a Civil War of sorts between two different Hero factions. Kindness can be dangerous because being naïve is never good.
They better have epic flying scenes and the best action scenes out of any Superman movie that's ever been made before ...and I'll say this man of steel has the best ending fight scene out of any live action movie I've ever seen to this day still so they better make better action than man of steel
I'm sorry if this may be unrelated to the video, but I saw on reddit that supergirl may replace Superman and wonder woman as the main protagonist of the DCU. Where's this rumor coming from?

Also it drives me insane how most directors take a very famous Graphic Novel and then just completely change it and they wonder why we hate their movie 🤦
Going back to the boy scout, Donner, Christopher Reeves version of Superman is a TERRIBLE Idea. IMO Gunn is going to fail miserably with this endeavor.
