Nice job; thanks! Yes, St. John's College High School, also in DC, is older than Georgetown. St. John's retains 'College' in the name because before Georgetown was founded, it was the only Catholic college.

And the Car Barn is where the city trolleys were housed. You may have seen some iron trolley rails embedded in the pavement of some of the streets of Georgetown.

In 1973 (when the movie came out) I had just graduated from High School and was living in McLean, Virginia (just a car ride over the bridge from Georgetown). My friend and I drove to a theater in D.C. to watch the movie. Afterwards, on the way home, we drove by the “steps” very slowly…talk about scary after having just seen the movie! I slept with the lights on for a long time after that!

We saw the Exorcist on it's opening run at the KB Cinema is D.C. Right after the movie ended we drove the two or three miles to Prospect St. and we walked the stairs top to bottom and up again. Man that was so cool in 73 to have done that. And yes the house in reality was way too far away from the steps for those two to have tumbled down. The film has stayed with me because it has that something special factor going for it. Everyone who loves this film should make the trek to go down those stairs.

Great job. I was just there a couple weeks ago the week of the 9th of October 2021 right after you were there and found it as exciting as I did when I was here back in 75'. Thought the fact that the owners left the gate open of the house was interesting and good that we could see the whole building. Saw a woman in the 1st window sitting down reading. I definitely would rather live in the Exorcist house than the Transformer house. The track where father Karas was jogging around ...those bleachers were wooden. My guess is that they were replaced after almost 50 years. Thanks again for the effort put into all the locations of the where the scenes were. That was a lot of research you did and it was appreciated. That movie was very impressionable to me.

Just the movie locations give me the chills. Some cinemas here in the UK had a priest outside the theatre after a showing. Catholics, or anyone for that matter, upset by what they had just seen, could seek support. Great publicity I suppose for a terrifying film.

Ellen Burstyn was the one that got her back injured in The Exorcist - and they actually used the footage of her screaming and writhing in pain on the floor after she (her character, Chris McNeil) was slapped by the possessed Regan. Linda Blair suffered some sort of injury after she came lose from the harness holding her in while she was undergoing violent, whipsaw-type spasms on the bed.

Very interesting, I saw the movie when it first came out, the lines were around the block of the theatre in Manhattan. If I remember correctly, it was The Paramount theatre. That bridge where Cris and Karass met was right behind my fathers job on M street where the C&O canal was. I t was long ago drained. People used to skate on it during winter time and there was a nice long smooth path to walk along. Was very upsetting that they drained it. The race track was remodeled and is unrecognizable. The steps were one block over from my fathers job and the garage that the street cars would park in was next to those steps. Georgetown was so fun and beautiful back then and I am very glad that I was alive for that Era. You did a fine job walking us through the scenes. Thanks girl.

The film was so traumatic to me as a 12 year old seeing it at the cinema in January 1974 that the two or three times that I have watched it since have been more or less tests to see if I could stand it without fear.
I just caught part of it last week on TCM, and for the very first time I was reminded of several things.
It is a snapshot of 1973, an era that I truly miss.
It's also the first of only two films that I went to with both my now deceased mother and stepfather, Papillion (1973) being the other.
And I noticed things in the film that I have developed a passing interest in now,
    such as the Catholic lexicon.

I was a student at Georgetown at the time and was an extra in the movie. I was in the bar scene which was filmed over several days and, although it was meant to be inside the Tombs bar near the campus, the scene was actually filmed inside Martin's Tavern on Wisconsin Avenue which is several blocks away from the university. Martin's Tavern is said to be the location where John F. Kennedy proposed to Jackie.

Hughes and Keating Halls at Fordham University in the Bronx were also used to film scenes from the movie.
I drove for a private cab company in 1975, I had a regular customer that I drove to work daily who worked in Keating Hall, she told me, she had to move her work hours from 5am to 8am bec of the paranormal activity that went on there after the filming was over it just so happened the those were the hours in which Jason Miller was listening to the tapes he had analyzed of his interview with Linda Blair when she spoke English backwards were filmed, they filmed during those hours to avoid the rush hour after the shoot. A story I've never forgotten.

I don’t blame the owners for having put the big fence and gate up to maintain some privacy. The Hitchcock Stairs were fun to walk down and back up. I even had a photo taken of me lying at the bottom of the steps just like Father Karras.

Great job! I've had umpteen opportunities to visit that location when I go to Washington DC, but I never have.

I love when movies are filmed on location vs a sound stage

It's nice to see that you like and appreciate this movie. I know many people who refuse to watch the film, and have made up their minds about it even though they never saw it...they have contempt prior to investigation. Other, people that saw it, thinking that it was a B rate movie, said that it was one of the highest quality films they ever watched. All one has to do is watch the opening of the movie in Northern Iraq to see that it is a movie production of very high quality. Also, have you noticed that there is no humor in the movie, it is dead serious in it's tone.

Seeing this makes me want to go home to watch the movie. My son and I watch it all the time. I just watched it about 2 weeks ago. This video is awesome and very detailed. To answer your question, I would definitely live in the Exorcist house because the "demonic" filming did not take place there.

Lol that's a good point. The fact that it's just a filming location makes it ok. Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. 😀

I would not only live in the Exorcist house but if I had the money I would transform it to how it looks in the movie, inside and out.

I recently learned that the owner of the Tombs hated the book and wouldn't allow the crew to film there. Though the scene is set in the Tombs, it was filmed at another bar.

    自分は日本に住んでる映画のエクソシストファンです。
    当然ですが撮影当時と街並みが変化してるんですね。
    ロケ地巡りいいですね♪
