My best buddy and me were both Coke drinkers in the early 80s. We noticed that suddenly some Cokes were different, having both a syrupy, clingy mouthfeel and strange and not pleasant taste. At first it was only a can/bottle (or sixpack) here and there, but eventually more and more until eventually they all tasted that way. That was about the time I gave up Coke and pop in general.
I didn't find out until many years later that our experience happened at the exact time when Coca Cola was switching from cane sugar to HFCS.
So that was kind of an ultimate blind taste test. We had no idea that they were replacing the cane sugar, or what was going on. But we definitely knew the difference, it was plain as day. And it was definitely not just the mouthfeel.

At 5:47 and 6:15 you almost decoded the secret of Dr. Pepper. You need to go with spiced rum and keep the ratio low enough it stays very sweet. It's an oddly perfect match, gives you the sweetness you want along with the extra flavor notes you were searching for.

4:00 I don't believe the difference is entirely in people's minds, but I don't believe it's actually the sweetener either
Plastic and aluminum tend to leech flavors, especially from acidic drinks like soda, whereas glass does not. This is, in my opinion, the actual cause of the taste difference combined with the fact that different countries often use different ratios of water, carbonation, and Coca-Cola syrup in their formulations for different markets even if the ingredients themselves remain exactly the same.
I think this is something worth testing. Not just the type of sweetener used, but the type of container used. If cane sugar Coca-Cola and corn syrup Coca-Cola taste exactly the same if they're both in cans for plastic, as opposed to any sweetener in a glass bottle, I think that's probably primarily the cause of the difference.

    • @DracoSafarius
      @DracoSafarius 5 месяцев назад +3

Well aluminum cans get a layer to prevent reaction with the drink, but that layer in itself can leak flavor into the drink so essentially the same.

  • @PostNukeProductions

I don't know about a taste difference, but I definitely notice a texture difference between corn syrup and cane sugar sodas. Syrup gives a much thicker, more sticky texture that kind of feels like it catches in my throat, something I don't get anywhere near as much in cane sugar soda.

There's a marked difference in the sweetness of real sugar compared to HFCS. The corn syrup is engineered to be sweeter - both so they can use less of it and to really hook you in! So sodas with real sugar are less sweet-tasting. They also seem flatter, but that's most likely either imagined or just due to the difference in chemistry 😊

Tonight I decided to explore and make a cocktail that I didn’t have a recipe for and I was very happy with the outcome. If you do another “fan submitted cocktail” episode it’d be awesome for you to try it. Very drunkenly written recipe below
    Drambuie Smash
    1 oz simple
    1.5 oz Drambuie
    .5oz lime
.5 oz whiskey (4 roses but any should be good)
.5 oz rum 5 year plantation rum
    5-8 mint leaves

I actually like the Strawberries and Cream Dr. Pepper, like to me it tastes like a Dr. Pepper Float but with Strawberry ice cream. It has very "playing around at a drink kiosk at a fast-food place" kind of vibes, and I love that. Strawberries and Cream is an underrated flavor concept, I know we have strawberry flavored stuff, the only mainstream strawberry soda I can think of on the market in the USA is Fanta; there's also like local brands but I don't want to dox myself, I also think Ramune has a strawberry version but don't quote me on that, Wendy's I know has a few specifically branded sodas at their kiosks I'm pretty sure one of them is strawberry (update: I learned it's cherry cream, for a vague memory I was pretty close). The only other strawberries and cream flavor thing I've seen in recent memory are Tic-Tacs.

The weird taste/feel from the diet (etc) might just be the artificial sweetener. I've had that experience from them in drinks, not as common for me to notice that sensation in food, just the flavor

Thanks for biting those bullets and fighting the good fight. BTW, to get the cane sugar version, which is usually bottled in glass, out NJ way, it's really hit-or-miss due to poor distribution. You can sometimes get it at a Rocket Fizz, a Mission BBQ, or a Cracker Barrel, but usually singles at a hefty price. P.S. Once upon a time there was Dr. Slice in small regional tests.

Regarding cane sugar vs corn syrup, it's largely a temperature thing. Different sugars express more sweetness depending on how cold they are so "real" sugar coke tastes different than modern coke. I think the best example of this is that classic coke was formulated before refrigeration was common whole pepsi is post-fridge which is a huge contributor to why they taste different
