Which do you use more? Personally, it's the airbrush for me, but it really depends on what you prefer to do with your hobby. I hope you guys enjoyed this one, it was nice to finally see people again.. even if it is Luke. 😅
If I had a resin printer I think I'd use it more often than my airbrush, but as I've only got a filament printer it's been sat dormant for a few months now. As Luke said I love the variety of models you can get from 3d printing but my backlog is big enough to begin with, without adding more models to it :)
I thought, "well, getting an airbrush helps reduce my unpainted backlog, while the printer actually adds to it." So it was an airbrush an the start of the year for me. But now, as I've *massively* reduced my backlog over this year, a 3d printer is... pretty tantalising.
This was a DAMN FUNNY VIDEO, you guys!!! Learning as I go, I been thinking bout a 3d printer myself, and I would be a NOOB so which one should I go for? Good but at a fair price, we aint rich here!!! THANKS GUYS SAVED THIS ONE!! You two need to do another video! SOON!!!
i got lucky in that i already had an air compressor (for my car and bicycle tires) so all i needed was the airbrush and an air-hose adapter. the airbrush compressors that make up the bulk of the cost. so saving for the 3D printer got a head-start.
Great video! A few months ago I’d have gone with the printer, hands down, but the airbrush is so versatile and great for getting effects I just can’t get with painting by hand - it’s a tough call!
Much as I REALLY want a 3D printer, I have to say I couldn't survive without my airbrush. it makes doing, as you say, simple OSL effects and basecoating so much easier and I don't have to keep buying rattle cans and all that nonsense. at this point I've done nearly 100 models with it and it's been invaluable. Great video, really enjoyed it! Those bases look great!
This was such a fun video to watch!! I love the head-to-head challenge, with you and Luke having a great dynamic makes it especially awesome! Lovely to see the shop up and running too!!
One of the most entertaining video I've watched in a while... And I learned something too. Note I did think that you two remind me of Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall in their tv show BOTTOM..
Welp, I was in this exact situation this morning before deciding to go with the airbrush and putting the 3D printer on the back burner. Thanks Geek Gaming for sharing this about 3 hours after I confirmed the purchase haha
I have both, a couple of airbrushes (Sotar 20/20 and a Harder and Steenbeck) and a nice Anycubic Photon Mono. I have to say that I use my airbrushes almost daily while the printer gets use a couple of times a month. The airbrush gave me speed, the printer gave me variety and flexibility. Both are extremely useful tools and both will add tons to any hobbyist. Also, I can totally relate to dropping a part and spending 20 minutes looking for it...and I drop a lot of things.
Truth be told, we owned three Badger airbrushes 20 years before I'd even heard of 3D printers. One part of the equation not mentioned was the cost of the miniatures. I going to guess that it cost less than three euros to print the figures, and about 30-40 euros for the GW product. (I could be wrong, I haven't purchased a mini since 1985). Entry point is roughly the same between the Mars printer and decent airbrush kit. A pretty long winded way of saying that I would opt for the printer first, and then scurry to save for the airbrush. They really do go hand in hand.
Those Terrain pieces look like the came from the Lost Adventures Kickstarter. I just printed a ruined corner wall that looks just like the one in the video.
I went for the airbrush. I am sure I will get a 3D printer eventually, but I thoroughly enjoy being able to prime and zenithal highlight from the comfort of my hobby table.
And having an airbrush opens up a whole world of painting with inks. I know it's become almost a meme (along with oil washes), but highlighting with colors other than titanium white is soooo cool.
Yeah! its The BoyZ!! Printer goes Brrr ;-) I am currently printer off a Contemper like model from a third party STL/Designer. Resin cost is around 1.80 Euro in resin.
I got both, i mainly went the 3D printer because alot of the models out there to print look a heck of alot better than companies that shall not be named
Since I've already got the printers, I might go for an airbrush :p Though for now I've only been doing modeling up to priming and I'm not sure if I'm made for painting itself...
Printer. You don't need an airbrush unless you are a commission painter and even then it is just a luxury. A 3d printer opens up so many options and avenues. From replacement bits to custom items or terrain. And anything beyond the hobby you can dream up and print. Like my phone/pad charging station with clips that ensure i never have to search for cables Yes I have booth and over 25 years of hobby under my belt.
If I was a Warhammer, AOS or any other GW game player, I would probably go with the airbrush just so i never have to worry about priming again and its all fine officially But I am not a huge wargamer. And if I was I'd play something printed like one page rules. So it's always gonna be a printer for me. Even if I was a wargamer supplementing pieces of an army with 3d printed stuff is amazing. For terrain and scatter its great. As a painter and a TTRPG player. It will always be a printer. If I want to wow my players with a bad ass dragon. I print it and slam it down. If I want to make a house or something, being able to print windows and doors is a god send. Being able to print custom minis for my players is priceless. And when I can use soft brushes to get similar effects for a little more time? Its always gonna be the printer
Buy both, seriously, a compressor is incredibly useful for blowing half dissolved resin and crap off resin prints when cleaning. Couldn't work without mine, well, I could but my prints would not look nearly as good.
Are you guys located in Castlebar? My home town and where I spent the pandemic, if I'd had known I would have definitely would have come by, maybe for my next visit home.
Great video, and congrats and good luck on going full time. For me, the question is somewhat hypothetical, because I own an airbrush and a (useless for hobby) filament printer. But if I had neither, I'd choose the printer first because like most people I have a huge available "backlog" of unpainted minis and terrain, and even for the new/cool minis, it's usually possible to find someone with a license to print and sell. But yeah, over time? Buy both. Just remember that fdm printers are absolute garbage for printing things people in our hobby would want to paint.
I'm an idiot - I meant to say that if I had neither I'd choose the airbrush first, I guess it's obvious I'm daydreaming about getting a resin printer.
Airbrush first if you are doing warhammer stuff 3D printer if you don't care if you have official warhammer stuff. I am into D&D and LOOOOOOOOVE my 3D printer for amazing minis at a great price :D and terrain is a bonus too!
Yeah. I got the 3D printer first. Then I had so many new things to paint I had to get an airbrush a month later otherwise... The backlog would never be completed
I’m looking at getting an airbrush and compressor. Would you say if I was to spend a bit extra to upgrade one, would you spend that bit more on the airbrush or compressor?
Depends on which ones you are looking at. But also you can't really spend "a little more." There are step changes. The Badger Patriot is plenty good. And the standard ~$100 compressor with tank is plenty good. I got the cheap airbrush kit from Amazon and the standard cheap compressor with tank and Im happy with it. But the super cheap airbrushes and compressors usually work good enough for beginners as well. And if you like it you can upgrade later. You won't regret either decision.
That is a very good question. I think it comes down to whether the compressor puts out inconsistent air pressure. If it is stable and steady, i'd probably upgrade the brush. At home, I use the Sparmax Max4 compressor and airbrush set. It comes in at around £180, which is a good price. I started on a cheap airbrush and compressor from Ebay.
@@BroadswordWargaming yeah, I'm kinda falling on that side of the fence too... my pile of shame is pretty...shameful. 😬 Also, I work in a school which has 3D printers in the DT department that I might be able to pinch time in! 😊

Given that I barely have any friends in the hobby who don't own a 3d printer now, I see less and less reason to buy one. I probably will anyway, but until then, I can just pay someone else for their resin and time.
Airbrush is a game changer if you can afford one. Even the £100 jobs off amazon are a great start. Just avoid the really cheap ones as both the compressor and included airbrush are a bit sh!t. Also, well done on the shop Oliver! Out of curiousity what did you do for a job before?

They don't! As mentioned, I added them to the box, as its a more interesting Warband and you can't really buy Dryads and a Leader for much cheaper. It's just a video. 😀 I think you're putting more thought in to than I did. 😅
