As a Professional Clubfitter, I have been a strong proponent of playing hybrids shorter and heavier than standard lengths for stronger golfers. Although I just turned 71 years old, I play my hybrids at -1/2” to -3/4” in playing length with 88 to 90 gram composite shafts in them, which transitions very well from the 77 to 82 gram shafts in my fairway woods to the 95 gram shafts in my irons. When the hybrid heads have weight ports in them, I have had to resort to installing heavier head weights on some occasions (I also had to do this with a Callaway Epic Flash 7-wood, because I play that club at -1/2”, as well). If a clubhead doesn’t have a weight port, a couple of strips of lead tape generally does the trick.
Interesting. I have a question you might have the answer to, so thanks in advance! I recently got a Diamana D+ X-Flex 100 Hybrid shaft. The shaft is 42” uncut. I want to install it in my Callaway Apex 19, 3-hybrid. Mitsubishi recommends trimming the shaft 1” for 3i, so down to 41” length. However, the stock Callaway Apex 3-hybrid has a 40” shaft. As per your recommendation, I’d like to go 0.5” shorter than stock (so 39.5” but with the Diamana shaft) Any thoughts on this? Should it be trimmed from the butt and tipped from the tip or butt? Thanks!
@@scoobanny - Unless you are REALLY strong and have a quick swing tempo, I would go with the standard tip-trim instructions (in this case, 1”) and then butt-trim to final playing length. Doug Mael
@@scoobanny - By the way, you may get a slightly lower-than-standard swingweight when you cut the shaft to play at 39.5” in that Apex hybrid (although the Diamana D+ hybrid shaft is not counter-balanced, so it won’t be too dramatic). If this happens, just add about 4 grams of lead tape at the back of the hybrid head (one 1.5”to 2”long strip of lead tape should do the trick).
@@dougmael Thanks! Sorry, I'm a novice when it comes to club fitting, I initially thoguht that Mitsubishi suggests initially trimming the club from the butt end not the tip end. My bad. So 1" off the tip, then then 1.5" off the butt end. If I understood correctly, cutting from the butt to length won't affect the shaft stiffness as much as trimming from the tip end to length? Thanks!
@@dougmael You also mentioned that you go -0.5" or 0.75", but I was wondering what the final length of your hybrid shaft is. In this video they said they went 2" shorter, but also didn't mentioned the final length. Thanks!
That SIM hybrid is something else. I’m the farthest thing from a hybrid fan, can’t get my U85 out of my hands... but that SIM has me scratching my head. It’s really really good
I clicked on it, I watch all of your videos no matter what, they're always entertaining and enjoy each one. I'm waiting on tomorrows' vid to drop that you said might have some info I'd like regarding my Live Q&A question from the other day. moved from P790 to MMC MP20 and same shafts but am now struggling to hit the 5 iron, while the others are all fine. Looking forward to whatever it may be
Brilliant idea Ian. I just looked at mine, 4 iron to hybrid to 3 wood is all 2" from the next. First hybrids were irons with big soles, now we are lost in the middle. My guess is long shaft = distance which sells of course...
Maybe try bowling. Most fairway and hybrids are 10+ degrees SHUT so you hacks can feel good about yourselves when you catch them right in the simulator before you buy it.
Kyle Coultas 1. Calling people hacks without knowing anything about their game 2. Saying that people should take up bowling because your that far up you own arse you think if someone occasionally hits one right they don’t deserve to play the game 3. Making the statement that most fairways and hybrids are 10 degrees closed which is bollocks with even anti slice clubs being 1-2 degrees closed and your ears are 25 degrees open. Also FYI my woods are set open as left is my miss 4. Coming on to a post just to try and belittle people just shows that your a bit of a dick
I live in Michigan and I've considering driving the 5+ hours just to come do a fitting with you guys. Love the channel! By far the best fitting content I've found.
Great video. I went from stiff 62 oz driver shaft to hazardous smoke x stiff 70 oz and what a difference. Being a lefty as well ,it straightened me up a lot . Seeing this video, I am definitely going to try shorter and heavier . I love my 4 hybrid and will when all this is over be trying the SIM 4 . Thanks for the input.
Fantastic video. I’ve been doing this with UST Recoil Proto Utility shafts. I try to build my hybrids to directly replace long irons using 110 gram shafts to go with the Recoil 125s in my short irons.
Hi guys, love the video. I was having trouble with my 5 iron so Melvyn at 4 counties golf in Staffordshire created a hybrid replacement with a shorter heavier graphite shaft from Tom Wishon’s S2S shafts. Hey presto a club that flies 170 to 175 yards and that’s a lot more consistent than my 5 iron and so much better from the rough. Great from the fairway and a better landing angle so my shots fly and descend without running out too far. I swing a 5 iron in the mid 70s mph so I now have 3, 4 and 5 hybrid with 6 iron being my longest club. The hybrids are more forgiving and allow a 11 handicap golfer like me to improve my consistency and scoring in the 165 to 200 yard range.
A few years ago I asked a local club fitter why the graphite versions of iron shafts longer than steel. He explained to me the length increase of the lighter graphite shaft increases the swing weight otherwise it is too light. So said why not use a heavier graphite shaft that is shorter in length. I don't use hybrids but in driving iron, I use 105 grams (SteelFiber) shaft opposed to the 70, 80 or 90-gram graphite shaft they usually use for these types of clubs. It is working for me!
Would love to see a follow up to this and shaft recommendations that worked for people. I'm looking to do this with a Titleist 818 H1 19 Degree Hybrid. Would love to hear any suggestions for shaft choice.
Before my swing went to shite, I did hit my hybrid ok, but the higher flight was challenging to get. And, I will ALWAYS click on your vids because I love to learn. Probably the engineer and geek in me.
I use TS2 Hybrids in 19 and 23...still heavily considering adding a 27 to my bag to replace my 5 iron. I just hit them so darn straight in the flatter setting you can set. First hybrids I've had (besides the 818H1 that I had that convinced me to replace my 5 wood) that I didn't hook.
Man, you guys are on point right now. Just had a conversation with a fitter here (NZ) and he convinced me to chop 1.5 inches off the chaft and play at 3iron length. No big left anymore! Especially as I can play the 918 flat as well. Only lost about 8 yards which is fine because it's a lot straighter. I did have to add a bit of weight but that's easy. Very interested to try that modus shaft. Great video!
Going shorter on the hybrid did wonders for me. I couldn’t hit hybrid from the fairway because of hooking it too much, shorter shaft + Sim hybrid is an incredible combination for me. This was the wow moment in my recent club fitting. A complete change in performance without doing anything to my swing. As Ian and Matt said, lie angle of the hybrid is an important factor for the change in performance. Regarding lie of the club, is it possible to flatten a driver? I’m finding massive difference in performance when I start my swing with the driver head in a flatter position (for reference, I’m 5’7, so lie angle on longer clubs matters a lot for me).
I did something very similar this past summer. I was using an Accra FX200H in my 23 degree hybrid. I replaced it with a Nippon Modus Tour 130, high launch/low spin. I made it about one inch shorter. My ball flight was higher and distance much more consistent.
I really loves the One Length Cobra hybrid, not just for control but also the flight wasnt soaring like a normal hybrid. Its a tad too short for me, so I customized my own 4 hybrid with lead tape and it works very well. I use a hybrid to get me out of the rough. Thats where i play my hybrid in my bag, it overlaps my lowest iron but I can get slightly more distance than a 4 iron but it's my go to out of bad lies, fairway bunkers and rough.
This past year I've replaced my 4 iron with a TaylorMade GAPR Mid, 4 @ 21* and KBS Stiff shaft. Slow tempo down a bit, hit it like a long iron ... trusty straight and long. Then I tried changing my old 5 wood (19*) with with a Callaway Big Bertha Hybrid, 3 @ 18* with UST Mamiya Recoil stiff shaft. Hit it like a long iron - big slice. Hit it like a wood - big hook. Hit it like a 7-iron - goes okay, but sometimes CRUSH it. Can't trust it, but the potential is there ...
loving the uploads guys during this lockdown. ive converted my backyard, patio and living room into make shift practice areas. Wife isnt to happy. she doesnt understand the frustration of us golfnuts. lol stay safe
Did this a couple of years ago. Put a SteelFiber i125 into my Cobra F7 4 hybrid and cut it down to regular 4-iron length (D3 swingweight). Much better contact and control. Still draws a bit but not as much as at the original length. I swap it in and out with a T-MB 4 iron depending on the course.
That is a great idea. The shorter length could also make it even more of a weapon on bump and run shots. Would love to see a comparison of this kind of hybrid vs a higher lofted utility iron. Thanks guys!
This could also address the one issue I have with my hybrid. The face feels so hot compared to my longest iron. I don't feel like I have control over it.
This is ultra relevant to me. I recently put a 42" (-.5) shaft 6.5 (heavier and stiffer than I usually play) in my 5w and it has increased my distance a lot due to my superior contact.
jaconbits - 42” is still generally too long of a playing length for a 5-wood. I am far from being short in stature (just a hair less than 6’ tall), and I prefer my 4-wood at 42”, and if I have a 5-wood in my bag it will be no more than 41.5” long. I don’t carry both at the same time; my standard fairway wood setup is 16* 4-wood (42”) and 20* or 21* 7-wood (41”).
Like this idea. So it's final. I have found my way to get my tour card. What's my secret? A fitting with Ian and Matt. Guaranteed to knock 15 strokes off and get me to +2.LOL, did I hear that right? Approach shot of 240 coming into a Par 5? Yeah, mate. Yeah, right-lol. Just a hybrid off the deck...as I need to hit my 3 wood flush and hope I don't over draw it, or slice it. Good stuff, fellas!
Great vid. Makes complete sense to me. My favorite club in the bag is an old Cobra hybrid with a Nippon steel shaft. My other hybrids have 75 gram graphite shafts. And I also play my driver at 44”, so shorter always works better for me. Thanks! 👍🏼⛳️🏌🏽♂️
Always hooked my hybrids until the Titleist 816s. Being able to flatten lie without messing with face angles is a game changer. Started with a 19 degree and liked it so much I got a 23 degree as well. The 23 degree was an eBay fund and it came with a lighter 70 gram shaft. I thought it was going to be an issue but it hasn’t been and these two clubs are probably the most consistent in my bag.
Very fascinating. This is counter to what OEMs are trying to market regarding distance/ball speed. Another reason why getting with a great fitter is key!
I do the same thing with hybrid rid length. I put shorter heavier shafts in with more headweight and even set them open on the adjustable sleeves. I feel the control is much better than trying to just smash it.
I actually just did something very similar to this. Have a Titleist 816 H1 19 that I could never really hit well, and it went too high. It even had a 90g Diamana whiteboard in it, and I still hit it too high. I dabbled with a driving 2 iron, but it was just too hard to hit, and don't like the idea of a 5 wood, as I had enough trouble finding a 3 wood I like. I ended up experimenting with a shaft that matched my irons in the hybrid (parallel NS Pro Modus 3 120), and it's basically built to 3 iron length. For the few times I tested it this winter, it works great. Once this COVID-19 blows over, I can't wait for some course testing and putting it into play.
So Matt doesn't use 3 wood into par fives because the holes "not long enough" and here I am hitting 3 wood into some par fours 🤦♂️🤦♂️ I wish I had Matt's issues.
Luca Imwinkelried - That SIM MAX 19* hybrid is so good that it makes a great replacement for a 5 or 7 wood (or both). I have one of them, and when I want to walk the course carrying my bag I try to get down to 10 or 11 clubs. When I do this, the 19* SIM MAX hybrid is the next longest club after my driver and then the next one after that is generally my 5-iron. I can get the in-between distances by choking-down on the 19* SIM MAX.
I have Sim Max hybrid. Tensei Pro White 90tx. I ordered it .25” short to mitigate some of the upright lie. Still a bit too much draw bias. I may trim another .25” at some point. The club is nice and heavy already with the 90 gram shaft so hopefully a little shave won’t throw off swing weight in a drastic way.
No Mizuno JPX Fli-Hi hybrids in the house? Billed as a direct iron replacement and built with a shorter shaft by design. The stock Nippon Modus 3 Tour 105 performs exactly as described in your video. The shorter heavier weight shaft really does help offset my hooky hybrid tendency.
I've done this exact thing on my last 2 hybrids - i.e. cut them to 39" which is 1" longer than my longest iron - my 5 iron which I play at 38" and I play it strong lofted at 24 degree - a typical 4 iron loft. This one change transformed my comfort playing my hybrid - a 22 degree #4 Taylormade GapR High, which I play 2 clicks stronger and open at 21'ish degrees. I'm using the stock 80 gram KBS Hybrid Shaft but I'm not too sensitive to shaft weighting in general and I am still coming back from elbow injuries. The other trick I personally like, is the Crossfield idea of setting up certain clubs to Draw - as hitting a fade is always easy in my opinion - so I adjusted the shaft to the 180 degree upright setting - this gives the club a natural 5-10 yard draw which gives me the comfort of being able to really commit to a long forced carry at a full speed swing in the 210-215 yard range - I can comfortable hit the high fade type 195 yard soft cut which is very natural with the club's natural starting line left given the lie. Heavier shorter hybrids are the future in my opinion - sort of where 1 length technology showed some promise.
Thank you. I learn more from your videos that any others. My hybrid is a stock Titleist 818. I'm going to test out the shorter shaft idea by putting a rubber band on the grip to reference the same length as my 4 iron and see if that helps my consistency issue.
I've always always gone with the "heavier and shorter" formula with longer clubs. This trend of 45.75" drivers and 43.5" 3 woods isn't helping the average Joe, and neither is 60-70g hybrid shafts. Great test guys!
Morgan Cross - All excellent points, and exactly my philosophy in clubfitting (I’m a Professional Clubfitter with more than 30 years experience). At age 71, you still won’t find me using a hybrid shaft that weighs less than about 82-85 grams, and 88 to 90 is my preferred hybrid shaft weight.
The only hybrid I have hit consistently well is an older steel-shafted Mizuno Fli-hi CLK 4-hybrid. It’s got a Dynamic gold s300 shaft at a 4-iron length, and I love it. $20 of eBay four years ago! I think Mizuno was on to something in that they saw the hybrid as an iron replacement.
Great to see there might be an option out there for some of us! But for $250 US that shaft just isn't in my budget at the moment. Are there any options for us less wealthy folks? Maybe even iron shafts? Currently use $taper 130X for reference. Thanks for the videos and stay safe!
Great vid, keep the awesome content coming guys! I have noticed the same thing with shaft length in going from a 3w to 5w or 3h to 4h. Get much better and more consistent contact with the shorter shafts, similar distance due to better contact, and a shot shape that can actually hold a green. I also like that you pointed out lie angle. The flat setting on my G410 5w is an absolute game-changer. Hoping to upgrade to G410 4h soon.
great video and very topical - I recently had a driver iron fitting - end up with 2 iron U510 and Mitsubishi MMT 105s shaft. The shaft was cut down to 39:50.. Goes really well but has the occasional big hook that terrifies me... how much of that would be down to offset head do you think?
Did something so similar to this. Replaced an F9 5 wood with Titleist 818 H1 23 Degree lofted down to 22 and using a rogue max 85 shaft. Much more consistent with strikes, not lost much distance and taken the left side out of the equation which I struggled with the F9.
Comment: I found you guys about 3 weeks ago and I’m trying to soak up as much knowledge as you can offer as this club fitting science is fascinating to me. This has just been a blast and so educational for me. Question: do you pin comments to your vids with the products you are testing? Especially the different shafts? I would love to see that in a pinned comment to then go off to the manufacturers site and read up some more on it.
My best club in the bag is a pinhawk 4 hybrid (1st version) same length as my 6i (1" longer than standard) with a 6.5 project X shaft. It's heavy in the head but puts me on the perfect swing plane that all I do is swing it nicely and it goes a 220-230m dead straight every time. Mid to high launch. No swing thoughts, just set up comfortably & swing. Good one to test for Matty boi as we have similar SS.
I have the same struggle. I found a used tour issue Callaway Apex 2016 3 hybrid on eBay with a UST IROD 105f5 shaft and cut it to 2 iron length. Threw some lead tape on it to get her to D2 and I'm striping it. I'd love to get the GOST shaft in a newer hybrid but it's very expensive
Great video. I've put an original KBS steel hybrid (105g) shorter stiff shaft in a 915h. It's my gamer with similar results to yours. Point and shoot confidence. It also feels like it blends very naturally with the KBS $-taper S+ shafts in my irons.
I replaced my 4 iron with a 22* hybrid with an x stiff 120gram steel shaft at 39", never had this many eagle putts in a season. Perfect club for 230-245 shots
I want to try this, is it best to max out tip trim and then cut the butt to shorten to desired length? I feel this would make an awesome stable shaft, but concerned maybe too tip stiff with such a heavy shaft.
Great work guys. If I cut the shaft of my Callaway apex pro 19 19 degree hybrid by 2”, would I need to add 12pts of swing weight to the head?? What sort of yardage loss is average per inch of shaft
Great video! For the benefit of all of us in isolation for another month, please put out a video on Matt's swing thoughts. What do you think about and focus on to hit it that long and straight???
Ian - have you and the boys had success with the Titleist TS hybrids where you can flatten the lie angle without having to bend it? How do you address the swingweight when cutting down the shaft, heavier weight in the head?
Absolutely! The TS hybrids and G410 hybrid have been great with the flatter lie. Swingweight should be adjusted using custom weights, both of those companies (and most others that have adjustable weights in the head) have different gram weights you can use to dial in the swingweight
Just added Mizuno CLK 2020 models in 3 and 4 hybrid matched with 5-PW HMB. The shaft in CLK is Tensei 70HY stiff and set at standard flat lie (ie. lowest) with a bit fatter grip and can’t turn them over unless I really try. I have a Ping G410 3 Hybrid with the Tour 85 rage shaft set at flattest lie and I can’t hit anything but a duck hook.......The CLKs are the best hybrids I have ever had just confident now, penetrating flight, great feel, and they just look square at address........my pro said they are the only hybrid he has put on the ground that he doesn’t feel like he is going to turn over......
Gave up on hybrids and found a matching Rogue 5w to my 3w same shaft. Enjoying it not hooking and the soft landing from the higher ball flight. The shorter shafted hybrid makes sense for Cyborg Matt
I had an old taylormade dual rescue that had a steel shaft and I loved it cause it felt like the rest of my irons. I am really looking forward to trying out that GOST shaft as I've been struggling with my current graphite shaft hybrid.
How about golfers with low swing speed (80mph), but a little less shortening ? I was recently fitted by Club Champion colleagues for G410 hybrids 19-22˚ with ProjectX EvenFlow Blue/Riptide 85 HY 5.5 shafts at 40 inch length. The G410 4 iron length is 38,88 inch.
You guys have to look into Dan Connelly. He's in Ontario and came up with a fitting system called True Length Technology, which is sort of a variable length approach to "one length" irons. I think it would help a ton of people and would be very interesting for someone like Ian to provide his perspective on.
Awesome video guys! I was really looking forward to this one. I put a 21* 818H1 with the stock Atmos TS Blue 85S shaft in the bag 2 seasons ago to fill the gap between 4 iron and 3w. Loved it but I was afraid of missing it left...hard left if I went after it. Mid season last year I put a Tensei 105x (untipped) and cut it almost an inch shorter than standard length. What a difference! I play it at C4 (22* / 1* flat) and its my go to 220-225 yd club and if anything my miss is a little right.
I switched to the Cobra One Length hybrids for exactly this reason. It's much heavier and there's a ton of offset, which I could do without, but I can hit a hook or fade on command with it. Favorite clubs in the bag.
I'm trying out the 122g steel shaft I have in my irons into a 22° hybrid head. Also getting a 100g steel iron shaft in the mail soon for comparison. The shorter for more control and less upright aspect looks very appealing.
This is very interesting. I dont have the speed to play a 3 iron, so I play a 3 hybrid (70g shaft), and I play light iron shafts (90g lz tour graphite 6.0). Scaling this for me might be a 80/90g hybrid shaft and then playing it short like Ian suggests. Might need to get my hands on cheap 3 hybrid to bucher for testing. Thanks for yet another great video!
Having a natural draw I was always afraid of my old hybrid with a 70g shaft because I would snap hook it like no other. I now play a g410 3 hybrid with my lie angle 2 flat with a 100g tensei white. It gets a lot of love on my 2nd shot on par 5s
Interesting idea and one I think I could benefit from... I have a 3 & 4 hybrid, both M6 and same shaft and always find I hit my 4 so much better than the 3, sometimes if I catch my 4 well it will go as far as my 3, could this be down to the slight difference in shaft length between the two?
likely if you catch the 4 really solid or even slightly above center, it's giving yout great launch/spin allowing it to perform as well as the 3. Not uncommon to see that, you may want to look at the 3 and see if something like a 5 wood would work better for yardage gapping
I love this too. Last year i got a hybrid as my tee club.to complement my 4 iron. As my swing changed from 5 out to in to 2 in to out i was missing alot left flattened lie angle now its a soft draw
What benefits of the multi material shaft offer as opposed to just putting steel in a hybrid head at the same length? I'm fairly certain Webb Simpson has steel shafted hybrids for quite some time now.
The old hybrid hook... I know these. You can crush them but also lose it off the course, which is why I prefer to make a par 5 a 3 shot hole and not lose the ball. But when you hit them nice.... wow
I hit the ball high with a lot of spin (1-2 HCP) and used a driving iron because of it. Missed the forgiveness of a hybrid though, so put a 4iron X100 shaft in an 18* Adams idea pro. Weird mix, but the club feels great and is very accurate!
The early hybrids had steel shafts, and 3/5 woods it used to be an option. I have struggled with hybrids with graphite shafts so an experiment worth trying. Be interesting to see the Nippon in a 3/5 wood as well.
Try the Arthur Extreme XCalibur hybrid shaft. $35 NEW, EXTREMELY Strong. My Stiff flex is 98g AFTER a tip cut 1.25", and plays 6.8 flex.... LOVE IT. My distance is slightly down, but my control in a hybrid is paramount..
I really liked the Matrix Ozik Xcon shaft in my idea pro, stiff flex. However, the stock Fujikura pro stiff is shorter and is great too on my King F7 hybrid.
When you are playing hybrids at the shorter length do you follow the tip trim code for the shorter shaft? For example, if I want to play a 4 hybrid length shaft in a 3 hybrid do I follow the 3 or 4 tip trimming instructions or just butt trim it to the 4 length? I ask bc I want to change out the shaft in my hybrid and experiment with this concept.
Interesting results from this test. I’d certainly like a hybrid for the forgiveness factor but, I don’t game one currently as I always seem to turn the ball over hard and the low CG makes the ball spin up for me as well. I’ve had more success with my TM RSI UDI 2 iron.
Does the shorter heavy shaft concept also correlate into a 5 wood? Or does the head design of the 5 wood not lend itself to that configuration of heavy/shorter shaft?
Is going to a steel shaft such as a c taper 130 x the next step in this progression? Idea is to play it as an iron and reduce a left miss - clk and g410 flattest hybrids?
Great video! My brother has been using a hybrid for years. I try his all the time and cannot hit them at all. I looked at the G410 crossover and the G410 3 hybrid. I bought the hybrid, but still can't hit the damn thing. I was going to go back and exchange for the crossover, but now I want to try what you just did in this video.
Just stumbled across this video. I’ve always thought about chopping some length off my hybrid to play same length as the 4 iron it replaced. Currently play a 22* 913Hd with Diamana D+ 92G. I have interchangeable weights for the sole. If I took some length of the shaft do I up the weight in the sole? I play a non taper grip so I’m guessing I could just grip down the club and experiment as well!
Matt, how does the SIM Max compare to the M6 for feel and sound? I hit the SIM and was blown away by the powerful feel of the ball coming off the face. Was wondering if it was the same or similar to M6
Exercise bike and TXG vids get me through afternoons in Scottish lockdown
As per your recommendation, I’d like to go 0.5” shorter than stock (so 39.5” but with the Diamana shaft)
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks!
I have 2 hybrids in my bag, Cobra F7s, and they're both an inch shorter than standard. They're some of the most consistent clubs in my bag
I had several hybrids fitted ,several long irons removed from my bag .It has changed my game. Thank you Titleist.

I play with a mate who has put an iron shaft into his 3 Hybrid .. works a treat..
I fitted shorter steel shafts to my hybrids, just had to weight the head to get swing weight right about D4 love it.
u just answered my question thanks Ingrid
I was fitted for hybrids 2 no ,5 clubs removed from my bag .It has improved my game ,Thank you Titleist .
Brilliant idea Ian. I just looked at mine, 4 iron to hybrid to 3 wood is all 2" from the next. First hybrids were irons with big soles, now we are lost in the middle. My guess is long shaft = distance which sells of course...
"people complain about hooking hybrids..."
My friend, I can slice any club I get my hands on.
James Baldwin it’s not a slice it’s a nice 80 yard fade! 😂
Maybe try bowling. Most fairway and hybrids are 10+ degrees SHUT so you hacks can feel good about yourselves when you catch them right in the simulator before you buy it.
Kyle Coultas Congratulations on the Dumbest comment of the week!

Where are these located?
Man, You just told everyone my secret! Been gaming my hybrid With an aldila rip phenom 100g shaft cut just a hair over 3 iron length. Its money!
I want to hate Matt but I can’t. 😂 He hits his hybrid off the deck farther than I hit my driver. 😂😂 Great video.
#PelvicThrust
Great video. I went from stiff 62 oz driver shaft to hazardous smoke x stiff 70 oz and what a difference. Being a lefty as well ,it straightened me up a lot . Seeing this video, I am definitely going to try shorter and heavier . I love my 4 hybrid and will when all this is over be trying the SIM 4 .
Thanks for the input.
Paul Bunyan in the house.
Love this! I did something similar with my Fairway woods, Went to 42.25" 3W and a 41.25" 5W with heavier shafts, more control and easier to hit!
TXG .. “optimising your golf”... should be your company statement. Your knowledge Ian is unparalleled... 😉🏌️♂️⛳️🍻
Love the SIM 3h put a iz 95x in. Since I play +1” the std length with the extra weight was perfect.
I did something very similar this past summer. I was using an Accra FX200H in my 23 degree hybrid. I replaced it with a Nippon Modus Tour 130, high launch/low spin. I made it about one inch shorter. My ball flight was higher and distance much more consistent.
This will save me some lead tape on the bottom of my CLK that I shortened 1”!! Again, best content on the tube!!!!
How's that?
Thank god for you guys.... thanks boys for all the content!
loving the uploads guys during this lockdown. ive converted my backyard, patio and living room into make shift practice areas. Wife isnt to happy. she doesnt understand the frustration of us golfnuts. lol

I don’t carry both at the same time; my standard fairway wood setup is 16* 4-wood (42”) and 20* or 21* 7-wood (41”).
dougmael The G410 i’m playing is factory 42.5 for the 5w, with the 7w factory 42. So i’m playing Ping’s 7w length spec in my 5w
Hotmelt in toe worked for me in reducing the draw bias....of course flattening the lie angle will work also.
Steven Stewart I’m with you brother.
@@brianwaldo2642 Me too, I have never ever, ever said, "this hole isn't long enough!!!

Steven Stewart I also did a double take on that one, “Did he just say what I think he said?” 🤯
Just switched to a SIM MAX 19° Rescue with a HZRDUS Red 105 shaft. Absolute bomber.
Always love hybrid content!
Doesn’t need to be that shaft, look for other heavy weight graphite hybrid or long iron shafts
Goes really well but has the occasional big hook that terrifies me... how much of that would be down to offset head do you think?
could be the spin profile, if the face gets a bit closed and the spin drops it's easier to hook
@@clubchampionmedia Thanks for the response - much appreciated
Did something so similar to this. Replaced an F9 5 wood with Titleist 818 H1 23 Degree lofted down to 22 and using a rogue max 85 shaft. Much more consistent with strikes, not lost much distance and taken the left side out of the equation which I struggled with the F9.
Great review...Great swing Matt..If your not a scratch player, it is not because you can't hit your woods or irons....Love the content......
Love this idea of a heavy shorter shaft in the hybrid. I've pretty much given up on hybrids due to over hooking, i will definitely give this a shot.
Very interesting video. That‘s a great example of deep inside that only you guys provide on youtube.
Check out Larry Cheung's youtube channel, he's my coach and has made a bunch of videos from our lessons
I'm fairly certain Webb Simpson has steel shafted hybrids for quite some time now.
a lot of it would be feel, vibration dampening, etc.
Have you adjusted for swing weight with the sim max when cutting it down -2"? i have a hzdrus smoke 90g in there and would like to cut it by 1"
I have a Sonartec 21 with a PXi 6.5 at 5 iron length. Amazing control for me and performs well off the tee and deck.
Great video guys! Getting experimental over there. Might need to give this a go. Stay safe!
Really interesting...how would this work for a lower swing speed hitter? Could this be a good 4-5 iron replacement?
Yes 👍
Would be great to see you review the mizuno jpx fli hi hybrid, shorter and a great club
Most interesting. Ian, my ping 4 hybrid still requires more height. Should we test shorter shaft with a bit heavier shaft?
Interesting results from this test. I’d certainly like a hybrid for the forgiveness factor but, I don’t game one currently as I always seem to turn the ball over hard and the low CG makes the ball spin up for me as well. I’ve had more success with my TM RSI UDI 2 iron.
What about the Ping G410 crossover for Matty? Super easy to hit if you ask me.
What do you gather is causing the spin to increase? Length? Or the GOST shaft?
